The Idaho TECH Lab Notebook
The Lab Notebook is a vital part of the Idaho TECH Program because
it allows each team to document the entire Engineering Design
Process. A more detailed description of the Lab Notebook
requirements is in the Competition Manual on page 42. Please use
the following overview and suggested activities from the Idaho TECH
Activity Book to help your team get started.
 The Engineering Design Process:
The entire Engineering Design Process
must be reflected throughout the Lab
Notebook. Every step in the process must
be recorded in detailed entries that are
dated and hand-written.
 Timeline:
The timeline must detail when and in what
order the team will complete ALL
components of the Idaho TECH Program,
including the Engineering Design Process,
and must be the first entry in the Lab
Notebook.
Please note that the “Suggested Timeframe” included in this Program Overview is
for teacher use only, i.e. students must create their own original Idaho TECH
timeline.
 Budgets:
Three separate, itemized budgets must be included in the Lab Notebook to
document the following expenditures:
1. Additional Lego®
parts ($50 maximum)
2. Use of non-Lego®
elements
3. Display construction ($30 maximum)
 Pie Charts:
A pie chart for each team member must be included in the Lab Notebook. Each
pie chart should categorize the team member’s contributions to the design
process.

Welcome to Idaho TECH 2011!
This overview is intended to familiarize team sponsors with the Idaho TECH Program.
A description of the Engineering Design Process, the Preliminary Design Competition
events, the Lab Notebook, and the Idaho TECH Web Site are included below. Several
activities from the Idaho TECH Student Activity Book are also recommended to facilitate
your team’s progress through the next several months. In addition, a Suggested
Timetable is located inside to be used for planning and time management purposes.
The Engineering Design Process
The following Engineering Design Process must be reflected throughout the Idaho
TECH Program, including the Poster Display, Verbal Presentation, and Lab Notebook.
1. Identify the problems
2. Set the goals
3. Brainstorm design ideas
4. Select and construct a design
5. Test and revise the model
6. Present the final product
The Preliminary Design Competition
Scoring of the Mars Rover prototypes will be carried out in seven areas. A
winning team will be named in each of the seven scoring areas described
below, and an overall Grand Champion will be determined via a composite score.
Following are the seven scoring areas, and their respective contributions to the
composite score.
Event Objective Points
Rover Speed Complete the course in the fastest time possible 10
Martian Rock
Collection
Collect and store five differently colored rock samples 15
Hill Climb Climb the steepest incline possible 10
Blind Driving
Complete the course while blind-folded through navigational
instruction provided by a designated Rover Assistant
10
Rover Weight Rover is to be as lightweight as possible 10
Rover Display
& Presentation
Poster display and verbal presentation of Rover design,
Rover construction process and teamwork distribution
