by the VC actors
12. Research questions
To what extent do the marketing arrangements that enhance pig
market linkages for farmers and aligned to business interests of pig
aggregators and input and service providers result in improved
performance of the pig value chain?
To what extent do the marketing arrangements influence adoption of
the farm-level integrated productivity enhancing package (technologies
and management practices) by farmers? What elements of the package
are adopted by the farmers and why?
To what extent do the integrated packages of farm level interventions
(feed + health + genetics + environment) translate into higher
productivity and reduced environmental externalities?
To what extent are learning sharing platforms such as the pig multi-
stakeholder platforms (MSPs) effective in influencing learning outcomes
and contributing to improved pig value chain performance?
13. Research design
Mixed approaches – theory and evidence based to evaluate outcomes from
piloting market arrangements/integrated technology and best practices
interventions
Target population:
o Aggregators, input and service providers in Kampala city, Mukono and Wakiso
districts and Masaka municipality
o Farmers from the same districts and linked to the aggregators
Before - after, quasi-experimental design coupled with econometric analysis
to assess the impact and effectiveness of the interventions in delivering the
expected outcomes
Baseline and end line data at the levels of farmers, aggregators and input
and service providers for before-after assessments
Assessments to be supplemented with causal pathway analysis for
triangulation and to support any evidence of causality from the quantitative
data
Qualitative and quantitative research approaches
o Participatory approaches with aggregators and input ad service providers and
farmers on the various forms of market arrangements
14. Market system facilitation process (led by Ultimate
Business Strategies)
An initial aggregator identification in project sites, profiling and characterization -
expected variation in their current marketing arrangements
Full list of aggregators identified in the project sites will be invited to an initial
meeting and aggregators interested to partner in the project will self-select into the
project
2nd facilitated meeting :
o at the project sites (district level) aggregators, input and service providers and selected
farmers and farmer groups will discuss the marketing arrangements that may work for
them
o integrated packages and their components, including PigSmart for improving pig
productivity will be introduced to get aggregator buy-in to support farmers to access the
packages through linkages with input and service providers
o market arrangements may take the form of formal or informal agreements
o farmers involved in the market arrangements will receive advisory services through
PigSmart platform
Coaching ad mentoring of the agreements in subsequent meetings

16. Multichannel Digitalisation (PigSmart) of the
Pig Value chain in Uganda
• PigSmart. Bundled Digital platform
(extension, disease surveillance, feed app,
etc) that links the small holder pig farmer to
quality controlled value chain actors and
products. A Two-way flow of information.
• Objectives. (1) Strengthen digital extension
channels (sms, IVR, video ) and; (2) develop
PigSmart use cases in the pig value chain
• Aim. Farmers increase productivity and
income because of better access to timely,
relevant, and actionable information.
17. PigSmart Use Cases
1. Extension facing. Multimedia supported extension
sessions
2. Farmer facing. Relevant multimedia solutions
targeting the farmer
3. Inputs suppliers facing. Input suppliers such as drug
stockists, commercial feed sellers will be linked to the
platform to get information/knowledge on biosecurity,
nutrition, husbandry and drug management, etc….
18. Sustainability of PigSmart
• Who will continue after the project? Leveraging
existing platforms currently operational. Partner vis-à-
vis contractor
• Costly to build? Partner will not build PigSmart. An
existing platform will be optimised to realise the
PigSmart vision
• Is the ICT solution one system or different solutions
contributing to an integrated package? The dream is
to have one various solutions that together provide the
PigSmart Ecosystem.
19. Animal Health Interventions
• Support capacities at different levels
– Strengthen advisory services in best practices in
diseases control and husbandry using PigSmart for
farmers and input suppliers
– Training veterinarians on application of herd health
services at farm level
