2. Background
• Global component established in 2016 as an off-shoot of
Africa component, and as a result of demand from ILC
members working on rangelands regiona/global.
• Core partnership of ILRI, FAO-PKH, IFAD, UNEP, WRI, IUCN,
ICARDA, CIRAD, CELEP & Rangelands Partnership
• ILRI responsible for the coordination of global component.
• Global component works across two regional Rangelands
Initiatives (Africa and Asia) and links with the Latin America
Semi-Arids Platform. Reference Group – ILC rangelands
members and partners.
• Global component maintains a link with the ILC Secretariat,
supporting them on rangeland issues; contributing generally
to development of CBIs (commitment-based initiatives). ILC
mailing list/slack.
3. Background
Goal: Increased tenure security of local land and resource users
in rangelands
Objectives 1:To strengthen community of practice on
rangelands-land issues at global level [CONNECT]
Objective 2: To build the capacity of ILC members to
mobilise and engage with decision-makers at global levels
[MOBILISE]
Objective 3: To influence changes in policy, legislation and
global strategic frameworks [INFLUENCE]
4. Activities and achievements - Connecting
• Connecting members around different events e.g.
participation in and contribution to the WB Conference
on Land and Poverty
• Development of a Land Portal Thematic Portfolio on
Rangelands, Drylands and Pastoralism

drylands-pastoralism
• Global landscapes forum (Bonn & NY 2019)

york-2019/day-1/drylands-and-rangelands-harnessing-
change/
• Issue Papers, Research Papers, Manual, Blogs, E-Bulletin,
Leaflets, Twitter, Flickr,
6. Activities and achievements - Influencing
• Organisation of an e-discussion
on Making Rangelands More
Secure
• Supported Learning Routes and
south-south exchanges
• Want to contribute to
development of global
indicators on land
• International Year of
Rangelands and Pastoralists
• Planned key publication: “Who
Owns the Rangelands?” –
collecting maps and data
7. Activities and achievements - Mobilising
• Improving attention to
rangelands within our own
organisations and partners;
• Supporting regional initiatives;
• Supporting the ILC Secretariat
on rangelands issues;
• Contributing to the
implementation of the FAO
VGGT Technical Guide on
improving governance of
pastoral lands.
8. Next steps
• Defining new strategy for next three years and raising
funds for this including:
• filling data gap and production of key documents;
• building capacity of our own organisations;
• continue to support regional initiatives including West
Africa and MENA rangelands Initiative development;
• influencing global processes such as UN Decade of
Ecosystem Restoration; UN Decade of Family Farming;
IYRP
• facilitating sharing of lessons and experiences
between members and globally.
9. Challenges
• Always been a strong reliance on the
coordinator/coordinating organization – this is not
sustainable; lack of involvement of some partners - lack of
value of RI?
• Diverse set of partners with different interests etc.
• The Initiative is not sustainable in terms of funding;
• Increasing competition between ILC initiatives – and push
from ILC Secretariat to “celebrate and let go”;
• Difficult to have an initiative that has a very narrow and
specific focus as competes for space with other initiatives
that are broader and include land as a component; push
from some partners to become a broader alliance
(following SAPA/CAPA?);
10. Challenges
• With new emphasis on complimentary funding as a term
of receiving funds from ILC, there is a danger of losing
the focus of the RI and become more a collection of
different projects, rather than a hub for information
exchange, building capacity, influencing etc.
• Attribution – challenge of reporting“Rangelands
Initiative” actions/results, and not actions/results of our
partners funded from other sources.
• Interesting to see where we are after the next 3 years –
certainly land tenure and governance in rangelands will
not be resolved, but how we as in initiative can continue
contributing to this is not completely clear!
