1. Hepatitis E virus prevalence in Vietnam (2017-2018)
Co-funded by CGIAR and Rakuno University (Japan), in this study, an
epidemiological survey is conducted in pigs from five provinces. Based on
the results, we can evaluate the sero-prevalences of HEV as well as to
identify the potential risk factor for transmission.
Man’s best friend: A crossborder transdisciplinary One Health approach
to rabies control in dogs in Southeast Asia (2018 – 2020)
Under this project, One Health network for rabies research and control
in Southeast Asia will be created with an overall objective to contribute
to the improvement of the control of rabies in dogs and human
population in Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam. Swedish Research Links
funds this project.
CGIAR research programs on Livestock Agri-Food Systems (2017 – 2018)
Funded by CGIAR, this project aims to evaluate the sero-prevalences of
zoonotic diseases (leptospirosis, Japanese encephalitis and brucellosis) in
pigs as well as to identify the potential risk factors.
One Health, Ecohealth and zoonoses research
in Southeast Asia
There is an increasing recognition that many public health issues are complex and can be best understood
by examining the relationship between the health of people and animals and the ecosystems in which
they live. Two approaches—One Health and Ecohealth—that have emerged over the last decade can help
us to better understand these intricate and complex relationships, and appear to hold great potential for
tackling modern public health issues related to food safety and zoonoses.
SafePORK: Market-based approaches to improving the safety of pork in
Vietnam (2017 - 2022)
With the overall aim of reducing the burden of foodborne disease in
informal, emerging formal, and niche markets targeting small- and
medium-scale producers, SafePORK proposes to develop and evaluate
market-based approaches to improving food safety. Funded by ACIAR, its
multi-disciplinary teams include public health specialists, veterinarians,
and agricultural economists.
Safer indigenous pork and healthier ethnic minorities in Vietnam
through better management of parasitic pig-borne diseases (2018 –
2019)
The project goal is to assess and reduce trichinella and cysticercoses
parasitic pig-borne diseases in ethnic minorities of Hoa Binh province and
is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Development
Cooperation, (BMZ), Germany.
Surveillance and early-warning systems for climate-sensitive diseases in
Vietnam (2015 – 2017) (Pestforecast)
Funded by CGIAR, Pestforecast project established surveillance and early-
warning systems to deal with important climate-sensitive diseases in
Vietnam by developing and disseminating maps of hotspots of climate-
sensitive diseases and piloting a real-time prediction system for Japanese
encephalitis, leptospirosis and aflatoxins.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) projects
Health and antibiotics in Vietnamese pig production - VIDAPIG (2018 –
2019)
VIDAPIG undertakes research to identify and assess factors that influence
veterinary health management and veterinary drug use practices at pig
farms with view to facilitating the establishment of prudent and
scientifically based antimicrobial usage practices consistent with a One
Health approach. It is funded by the Denmark Government.
A systems approach to livelihood-sensitive veterinary antimicrobial
stewardship in Vietnam (2016 – 2019)
Funded by CGIAR, the project aims to understand how decisions around
veterinary antimicrobial use and stewardship are made by family farmers
and their animal health networks, and identify leverage points for
improved antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in Vietnam.
Exploring the replacement of antibiotic use by nano silver in pig
production in Vinh Phuc province (2017 – 2018)
This project seeks to tests an intervention to reduce the AMR and AMU
through increased awareness and knowledge of all stakeholders on
antibiotic smart-use at pig farms and is funded by CGIAR.
Metropolitan mosquitoes: Understanding urban livestock keeping and
vector-borne disease in growing tropical cities (2018 – 2021)
This project will fill knowledge gaps
regarding urban livestock keeping and the
risks associated with them in terms of
disease vectors, and their pathogens. The
project team will consist of scientists from
veterinary and medical background with an
experience in working with disease
transmission in tropical cities. It is funded
by the Swedish Research Council.
Bioaerosol sampling to detect avian influenza virus in Hanoi’s largest
live poultry market (2017 – 2018)
Newly emergent and virulent
strains of H7N9 avian influenza
virus are rapidly spreading in China
which threatens Vietnam. This
study seeks to introduce possible
use of aerosol sampling for
detecting avian influenza viruses in
Vietnam. The project is co-funded
by ILRI and the Duke University.
