Our Body’s Design
• Our bodies are uniquely designed to handle stress.
• When presented with stressful situation it is our most
basic survival instinct to either:
– Engage in a fight
– Or run for our lives
• The response to run or fight
is not so much on the event
but how the events are
perceived

Response to Stress
• Adrenaline is secreted from the kidneys
• Cortisol (a hormone) is released providing
bursts of energy
• The heart suddenly beats faster
• Breathe rate and blood pressure increase
• Blood sugar is released into the bloodstream
• Hearing and sight are enhanced
• Digestive system and urine production slow
to divert blood to more critical areas, such
as the brain and muscles

Realities about Stress
• Stress is a normal part of life
• Total absence of stress is not realistic
• Stress can be beneficial if properly handled
• Stress can be a real or perceived threat
• The perceived magnitude of stress is dependent
on the way it is interpreted
• Neither non responsiveness nor over
responsiveness to stress is good
• What is good is appropriate response to stress

– Poor control or excersabation of chronic diseases
– Decreased immune function
– Several important functions of the body are
