Women within the academy (i.e. professors, researchers, and academicians) continue to face issues such as program cuts, lack of professional development and leadership opportunities, the pay gap, and reduced funding for research within the humanities, which includes valuable resources on gender and diversity. These ongoing issues are only becoming more exacerbated during the current environment.
Understanding the importance of continuing conversations around these topics, IGI Global hosted a webinar, in coordination with Laurentian University and York University (recently named one of the top universities for tackling gender equality), Canada, featuring the editors and contributing authors of the IGI Global title, Critical Reflections and Politics on Advancing Women in the Academy. 3. Land Acknowledgements
Laurentian University Land Acknowledgement: Laurentian University is located within the
territory of the Robinson-Huron Treaty of 1850, and recognizes its placement on the traditional
lands of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, as well as its proximity to Wahnapitae First Nation. As
Canada’s only university with a tricultural mandate, Laurentian offers an outstanding higher
education and research experience in English and French, with a comprehensive approach to
Indigenous education. Laurentian prepares the next generation of leaders who bring innovative
solutions to local and global issues.
York University Land Acknowledgement: I recognize that many Indigenous Nations have
longstanding relationships with the territories upon which York University campuses are located
that precede the establishment of York University. York University acknowledges its presence on
the traditional territory of many Indigenous Nations. The area known as Tkaronto has been care
taken by the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Huron-Wendat. It is
now home to many First Nation, Inuit, and Métis communities. We acknowledge the current treaty
holders, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. This territory is subject of the Dish with One
Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement to peaceably share and care for the Great Lakes
region.
9. 12-chapter collection of women’s
narratives which challenges us to
think more critically about
women’s experiences in research,
teaching, and leadership.
To search for new
transformational approaches
and to build more sustainable
empowerment strategies for
women in the academy.

13. Book Inspiration
● My hopes for this book is that all the amazing contributions from the strong and brilliant
women will have an impact for women in academia today and those considering this path.
● It was also a chance to work with and learn from Sheila and Taima, two strong, brilliant
women who have been through the tough roads in academia and are now leaders – working
with them was a huge bonus for me.
● I hope that others draw strength from the stories and knowledge shared in this book and that
they, in turn, will use it to help other women when they need it.
● Optimistically, I look forward to a world where women no longer have to battle or have these
negative experiences. Let’s make this the new Normal!
