- The document is an agenda for the "PureApplication" event discussing hybrid cloud.
- The keynote speaker is Andrew Darley, Head of Pure Systems at IBM Europe, who will discuss the future of hybrid cloud.
- There are several sessions on accelerating applications to hybrid cloud environments and case studies of organizations using IBM's hybrid cloud solutions.
IBM believes that for most organizations, particularly those that have substantial investments in IT, the right approach is not private cloud or public cloud.
In some cases [give private cloud example] the combination of private cloud and traditional IT is the right answer for organizations.
Others [give public cloud example] benefit greatly from the quick execution and ROI from a public cloud.
The future will be dynamic hybrid because it leverages the best of both worlds and allows for better outcomes.
For companies with large IT investments, Hybrid allows you to Maximize return on existing IT investments by transforming IT into self-service private clouds
Hybrid allows you to keep some workloads on best fit infrastructure, and move others to public cloud for better economics
Hybrid lets you keep critical, sensitive data in house, while innovating on public so you have the right balance of risk to speed e.g. connect ERP to public CRM to enhance client experience.
Hybrid will lets you extend your current IT and private clouds with public capabilities to meet seasonal capacity requirements (e.g. holiday shopping), without the need for additional CapEx
Hybrid allows you to set up development environments quickly for innovation and add new capabilities like analytics or mobile software as a service on public quickly, to compose more competitive business services and processes.
In fact, this last point is really a critical one… (next slide)
Client Name: A Belgian Insurance Company
Solution Components: IBM® PureApplication® Service on SoftLayer
IBM Global Business Services®
IBM Software Services for WebSphere®
Operational Decision Manager (ODM) pattern, including ODM for z/OS
IBM Global Financing
CLIENT
A global insurance company provides life, property and casualty insurance products to individual and business customers. Its products include individual and industrial accident, auto, fire, home, and life insurance. The company, which is based in Brussels, Belgium, sells its products through insurance brokers and independent banking agents in Belgium and internationally.
BUSINESS NEED
Insurance markets are becoming more and more competitive, and the company is continuously challenged to maintain a leading position. The insurer is rethinking its underwriting process to become more agile and to respond faster to market demand with new products and services. As part of that process, the company wanted to launch a one-year pilot project to implement underwriting for household products. The company was interested in a solution from IBM Software Group but was concerned with the up-front costs.
SOLUTION IMPLEMENTATION
Working with IBM Global Business Services (GBS) and IBM Software Services for WebSphere (ISSW), the company deployed IBM PureApplication Service on SoftLayer and patterns for Operational Decision Manager (ODM) software, including ODM for z/OS. The pilot program uses PureApplication Service on SoftLayer to deploy its test environments. The solution enables the company to test new products off-premises using an IBM SoftLayer service center, which provides the PureApplication platform as a service (PaaS). When the new products have completed the development and testing phases, the solution enables seamless migration of the data and environments back to the company’s premises. This flexible arrangement enables the company to rapidly ramp up whenever a test environment is needed, and to easily expand the use of SoftLayer resources at will.
BENEFITS
This cloud solution required a lower initial investment while providing the insurance company with the flexibility to increase capacity if needed. Development environments were deployed in just a few hours and the company gained the ability to easily migrate to an on-premises PureApplication System platform in the future.
