1. Samina Hydery, a junior at Guilderland
High School, has been a political enthusiast from a young
age. Living just minutes outside of the state capitol, Samina
has been a frequent volunteer with local democratic
organizations such as Citizen’s Action and SEIU. Dedicated
to bringing the nation a democratic victory, she worked
alongside Students for Barack Obama in 2008. Two years
later, she worked on both Andrew Cuomo’s successful
campaign for New York State Governor as well as Eric
Schneiderman’s run for NYS Attorney General. She has
been involved with several state legislative campaigns and local races as well.
Samina is honored to be an alumni of Running Start’s prestigious
Young Women’s Leadership Program, a scholarship program which helps
prepare women to run for elected office. In 2009, 50 young women were
accepted into the program out of 30,000 applicants. In the summer of 2010,
Samina had the opportunity to lobby the HR-2102 bill in Washington D.C.
with the United States Public Service Academy, an opportunity that has
increased her understanding of the legislative process. This past December,
she was selected as a speaker for the No Labels launch at Columbia
University. Other speakers scheduled to speak included Senator Kirsten
Gillibrand, Senator Joe Lieberman, and R&B artist, Akon. No Labels
advocates bringing a progressive attitude to the table to ensure positive
change- an approach Samina will take when elected.
After years of commitment to the YDA and Democratic Party,
Samina is proud to announce her candidacy for National Chair of High
School Democrats of America.
Samina was appointed to the National Committee of HSDA at the end
of her freshman year. She soon served as both the Northeast Regional
Director and Administrative Director of the organization until March 2011,
responsible for setting up conference calls, taking minutes, and creating both
timelines and agendas. Due to her strong work ethic and fulfillment of her
responsibilities, she was then appointed as the Programs Director of the
caucus in March 2011. In addition to serving as the president of her high
school’s Young Democrats club, she has served as the Vice-President of her
class and high school’s student government for the last two years. She hopes
to major either in Political Science or Business with a concentration in Public
Policy. Wherever her future takes her, she will continue to work with the
Democratic Party thanks her wonderful years with the YDA.
