Terminology on the Optical Module
Encapsulated type
Classification of optical module encapsulation, such as: SFP, eSFP etc.
Transmission distance
The maximum distance optical signal can be transmitted. As the fiber itself has
dispersion and attenuation on optical signal and other side effects, so different types
of light, emitted from the optical source, have different transmission distance.
Interface rate
The maximum error-free transmission of the electrical signal rate that optical devices
can be carried, interface rate that the Ethernet standards required are 125Mbit / s,
1.25Gbit / s, 10.3125Gbit / s, 41.25Gbit / s and so on.
Optical fiber Mode
The fiber can be divided into multi-mode and single-mode according to its core
diameter and character. Generally, as the multimode fiber core diameter is large with
serious modal dispersion, the transmission distance is short while the modal
dispersion of single mode fiber is small, so the transmission distance is long.

Optical module ports (fiber insertion site) types are LC (all SFP, SFP +, XFP), MPO
(some of the QSFP +, CXP), SC, etc.
Whether the different wavelengths of optical modules can be
in butt joint?
The working principle of optical transceiver module is a process to transmit and
receive optical signals, with the optical signals transmitting of different wavelengths
standard, different wavelengths will also affect the maximum transmission distance.
However, BIDI SFP only uses one fiber optic cable with different wavelengths, such
as TX1310nm/RX1550nm.
In principle, the transmitting wavelength (RX) from the sender and the receiving
wavelength (RX) from the receiver must be same. However, sometimes it can be
connected successfully even if they are inconsistent, because the receiving device is
larger on the wavelength of adaptation to identify a range of wavelength signals. We
suggest to avoid this situation in the actual project as it might cause some troubles on
performance issues and other aspects if we to do so.
