Cardiac arrest and heart attack are often confused but have important differences. Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly due to an electrical problem, whereas a heart attack is caused by a blockage in blood flow to the heart. In cardiac arrest the heart cannot pump blood, a person becomes unresponsive within seconds, and death occurs within minutes without treatment. In a heart attack blood flow is blocked to part of the heart, which begins to die if not reopened quickly, and symptoms may develop slowly over hours or days. The key to survival for both is calling emergency services immediately so treatment can begin as soon as possible.
