2. Tee Box:
Every hole on a golf course has a starting point. The
teeing ground is that starting point.
Fairway:
Think of the fairway as the pathway from the
starting point of the hole (the teeing ground) to
the end point of the hole (the hole on the putting
green).
The Rough:
"Rough" refers to those areas outside the fairways
and greens where the grass is generally taller or
thicker or left unmanicured - or all three.
Bunker:
Bunkers are areas on a golf course that have been
hollowed out - sometimes naturally but usually by
design - and filled in with sand or a similar material
comprised of very fine particles.
Putting Green:
The putting green is the terminus of each hole.
Every hole on the golf course ends at the putting
green, and the object of the game is, of course, to
get your golf ball into the hole that is on the putting
green.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF A
GOLF COURSE?
3. A round of golf, on average, is expected to
take about four hours to play for a group of four
golfers. That is the estimate most golfers will give
for an appropriate length of time to play 18
holes. But the actual time it takes to play varies
for many reasons. (How many golfers are in your
group, how the golf course is busy when you
play, and skills level of golfers?)
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKES TO PLAY A
ROUND OF GOLF?
Every time you swing at the golf ball with the
intention of hitting it, that’s a stroke. Every time
you make a stroke, count it. At the end of each
hole - after you’ve rolled the ball into the cup -
tally the strokes you used on that hole. And that’s
your score for the hole.
HOW DO GOLF SCORES WORK?
4. “Par” is the number of strokes an expert golfer is
expected to need to play a hole or to play the
golf course as a whole. Every hole on the course
has a par rating.
Example: If Hole No. 1 has a par of 4, and you
score 6, then you are 2-over par (six is two more
than four). If Hole No. 2 is a par-5, and you score
4, you are 1-under par. If you make 4 on a hole
that is a par-4, you are “even par” or “level par.”
(Birdie is 1-under par, Eagle is 2-under par, bogey
is 1-over par, and double bogey is 2-over par)
SCORING IN RELATION TO PAR
5. In general, a collared shirt and Dockers-style
shorts or slacks will get you onto most golf courses
(additionally, golf skirts or skirts for women). But most
upscale courses require collared shirts and have
a no-denim rule. A very small number of (mostly
private luxury) courses even have no-shorts rules,
requiring golf slacks.
According to the Rules of Golf, golfers may carry a
maximum of 14 golf clubs in their golf bag during a
round of golf played under those rules.

CODES?
HOW MANY CLUBS MAKE UP A GOLF
SET?
6. Golf clubs falls into several categories: The woods
(driver and fairway woods), hybrids, irons, wedges
and putters. The up-to-14 clubs in any golfer’s
bag will be comprised of these clubs - but it is up
to the individual golfer to determine the various
combinations.
Golf shoes are a good idea, however, because they
are engineered to keep your feet from sliding around
during the golf swing. If you don’t own a pair a golf
shoes you can still play golf, although you might slip
or slide more than you would if you did have golf
shoes.
