Your Business – Winter Checklist

                       Though it’s still months away, the winter is approaching fast. The following
                       checklist will help you prepare your small business for the most extreme
                       weather conditions. Many city councils are busy already, preparing for the
                       season. Follow these simple steps, be prepared, and stay operational whatever
                       the weather.

                               Safety:
                       o       Stock up on the grit to keep your entrance area free of ice

                               and snow.

                       o       Add your insurance number to your mobile in case of an

                               emergency.


                                 Energy Efficiency:

                           o     Call you energy supplier and ask for a visit to check if your boiler and central heating are in good

                                 working conditions.

                           o     Reduce unnecessary heat loss by filling gaps around windows and doors. Check business gas

                                 prices and shop around for the best deal.
Employees:
o   Keep your employees’ details updated and in a place easy access.

o   Can your employees work from home? Think about their safety and saving time. Going to work in hard

    weather conditions can take a long time.

o   Consider hiring extra staff to get the busiest shifts covered.

o   Make sure your employees is fully briefed and informed about any transport diversions or time changes.

o   Encourage staff to plan ahead.




                                                                           Contingency planning:
                                                                       o   Identify the greatest risk potential – asses

                                                                           the exterior and interior of the building

                                                                       o   Back up your data

                                                                       o   Plan alternative ways of communicating

                                                                           with your employees

                                                                       o   Review your insurance coverage – make

                                                                           sure you know what is covered and what

    Also consider:
o   Leave the heating on, even in an empty

    building, to prevent pipes from freezing.

o   Repair broken taps.

o   Check the roof for any signs of blockage

    and loose tiles.
