1. Opportunities
Every project gives you opportunities to create but also constraints to work to. Use this hand out to
consider the opportunities this project has to help you improve your skills, knowledge and creativity.
Opportunities
What creative opportunities can you see in this project? How could you challenge yourself
creatively in this project? You can refer to your previous experience here.
I think that this project has quite a few creative opportunities although we will have to
incorporate a few things to make it look like an Irn-Bru product. We will be able to redesign the
colour scheme to make it look more modern and interesting. I will have some creative freedom
but I don’t want to stray too far away from the well-known colour scheme so that it doesn’t
look out of place. I will be redesigning the whole can itself and it will have completely different
visuals. Obviously it will still have to look like an energy drink and can’t be completely plain. I
will be able to challenge myself in this project because we are doing things we haven’t done in
previous topics. We will be trying to make a competent and professional looking can this will
use techniques we haven’t explored yet.
What technical opportunities for development are available in this project? What technical
challenges could you set yourself? You can refer to your previous experience here.
I will be able to develop my Photoshop skills extensively throughout this topic. This will be one
of the more practical topics compared to the writing copy. Writing copy was about developing
my skill as a writer and design for advertising is all practical. I will be working around the plans
that I have made. One technical thing that I can develop is my ability to edit images. I will be
editing a lot of images throughout this project. I have edited images in previous projects such as
the photography topic but it wasn’t to the same extent. I will be finding appropriate images and
then editing them to make them applicable for the adverts.
How could the skills you are using and developing here be useful in a professional context?
Consider the requirements for different job roles.
The skills I would be developing would be my graphic design skills and Photoshop skills. This
would be useful if I wanted to be a graphic designer. A graphic designer could have to rebrand a
whole product or just create an advert. A designer will go through scrupulous detail to make
sure it looks professional and applicable for what is asked from the employer. An advertising
company will have people employed to make adverts and to make sure the adverts are
appropriate.
What opportunities for designing for different media does this project give you? Which final
product type interests you the most and why?
We will be designing a can for Irn-Bru. This is the first time we have actually created a product
ourselves. This should give us a good chance to try something new. We will also be creating a
web banner. We haven’t created a web banner before but it’s similar to an advert. The final
product type which interests me the most is the advert, this is because I like the idea of creating
an image that then encourages someone to have something whether they need it or not.
