Defence Innovation Initiative
• the Defence Innovation Initiative was launched in Sep 2016
• the Defence Innovation Fund is nearly £800m over 8 years
• the Accelerator was established in December 2016, building
on the Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE)

• Dr Lucy Mason appointed
as new head of the
Accelerator
on 8 March
• Accelerator is growing
– currently ~15 people
– plan to grow to ~30-40 over
next year

What is the Defence and Security Accelerator?
• UK defence and security organisation, hosted by Dstl,
to:
– build advantage for the defence and security of the UK
– generate economic value for our nation
• Providing customers with innovation-as-a-service, via:
– joining up across defence and security
– outreach and engagement to find innovative ideas
– accelerating the development of solutions to real-world
problems
– an end-to end process through to exploitation

What is the Defence and Security Accelerator?
• 500+ organisations have been involved so far with CDE and
the Accelerator
– including 340 companies
– around 90 public entities
– around 50 academic institutions

The Enduring Challenge overview
• launched on 26 January 2017
• open call to anyone who thinks they have a good defence or security idea
• UK or overseas
• submit anytime, reviewed monthly
• rapid response, feedback for unsuccessful bids
• budget of up to £6m in FY 2017/18
• funds proof of concept research in the range of £50 – 90k for work of up to
9 months duration, though we are open to make this more flexible in future
