CONteNts dECEMBER 2019
The festive season has arrived in
Streatham, and we are delighted
to have, once again, partnered
with the instreatham Business
Improvement District to bring you
this beautiful bumper issue of the
magazine. see The Streatham
Book of Christmas 2019, created
by the BID, in the centre pages. It
contains plenty of ideas for going
out, gift shopping, eating out, and
entertainment in streatham, plus
a guide to some of the great local
salons and spas to help you look
festive and fabulous. the big news
is that local singer-songwriter,
Lianne La Havas, (Glastonbury,
Isle of Wight, supporting alicia
Keys, Paloma Faith are just some
of her credits) will be turning on
streatham’s Christmas lights on
7th December.
spoiler alert: streatham Common
has (sadly) never been twinned
with meribel (see p3 of the
streatham Book of Chritsmas).
It was a Pr stunt by a ski holiday
firm a few years ago. Although it is
possible to ski on the Common if
the powder is right….après ski at
the rookery Café, anyone?
It wouldn’t be right to ignore the
General election on December
12, so we have been meeting
the streatham Parliamentary
Candidates from the main four
parties to find out a bit about
them , since the only certainty
is that we are getting a new mP.
there’s a lot of agreement among
them about local issues – and
favourite streatham spots. thanks
to each of them for standing to
serve streatham.
Merry Christmas, and a Happy
New Year, Streatham! See you
in 2020!

General election December 2019
JAnE WROE WRiGHt
One thing is certain about the 12 december’s General Election; Streatham
will be getting a new MP. We met the key Parliamentary Candidates to find out
a bit more about them.
Bell Ribeiro-Addy. labour
streatham resident Bell grew up
in a council house in Brixton in
an extended Ghanaian family.
her mother ran a nursery and
education was a top priority.
a keen reader Bell excelled at
school and credits an exceptional
teacher for her winning an
assisted Place at streatham
and Clapham high school. she
studied Biomedical science
with ethics at the University of
Bradford but encountered levels
of racism in the city she had
not experienced growing up in
south London. she became race
Relations Officer at the Student
Union, then the NUs National
Black Students’ Officer for the
NUs after doing a master’s in
medical Law and ethics at Queen
mary's, University of London.
after several roles with the
Labour Party, Bell is Chief of
staff to Diane abbott. as a left-
wing candidate, her selection
was not universally popular with
the local Labour Party, but she
intends to be a unifier, trying
to heal rifts with a personal
approach. Transport is a key
priority, as streatham’s trains are
overcrowded and unreliable and
the high rd. does not feel safe
and healthy for active transport
like cycling or walking. Bell is
committed to lobbying for major
infrastructure investment for
streatham. she also believes
Lambeth could improve the
outcomes of its property deals
to help tackle the shortage of
affordable housing. Youth crime
is another top priority, and Bell

advocates the Public health
approach pioneered in Glasgow.
this involves multiple agencies
trying to understand and address
its causes, responding to
incidents and working towards
the long-term rehabilitation of
perpetrators.
top streatham favourites for Bell
are streatham’s Kite Day plus
El Chico’s and Talay Thai, and
she used to party at the White
Lion and the old mint Bar (now
exhibitB).
Helen thompson, liberal
democrats
helen was born in Lambeth
then moved to hampshire with
her parents and two sisters.
her degree was in english
Literature at Cardiff University,
then a master’s in International
relations at the Diplomatic
academy of Vienna. she lead the
Civil service in the International
Development Office. Overseas
postings included Kabul where
she helped supervise the
first democratic elections in
afghanistan after the war and
worked to empower women and
girls. helen left the Civil service in
2016 to work for a humanitarian
charity supporting refugees
around the world and joined the
Liberal Democrats. she has their
team in streatham to success
in the may european elections.
helen’s priorities are defending
our institutions – Parliament
and the Judiciary – and she is in
favour of reforming the house of
Lords and the voting system.
After a commitment to fight to
stop Brexit, helen’s top priorities
for streatham include air quality
and climate change. she is
opposed to the expansion of
heathrow airport and advocates
transport infrastructure
improvements, better active
transport options, Playstreets,
and low traffic neighbourhoods.
she would also campaign for
the Crossrail2 route to come
to streatham. Youth services
are another priority, including
providing professional youth
workers and safe spaces for
young people as part of a Public
health approach to knife and gun
crime.
as a local resident, helen loves
the sense of community and
neighbourliness of streatham.
“there is a warmth and
friendliness. People feel they
belong here.” her top local
venues are Streatham Common,
where she goes running. she
loves Streatham’s independent
coffee shops and places to eat
and drink, so it’s no surprise that
Streatham Food Festival every
June is one of her favourite local
events.

Rory O’Broin, Conservative
Rory, a lawyer at an international
insurance company, is a
Conservative Councillor in his
home area, Wandsworth. He
has been discovering Streatham
via his brother, who lives here,
and through his work supporting
Streatham Conservatives this
summer. His family came from
Ireland to Oxfordshire in the
80s, where he attended an
international school before going
to Durham University to study
Law. Rory moved to London to
complete his legal training and
has lived in South London ever
since. He has a seven-year-old
daughter and three-year-old son
and is a governor at a Primary
School in Clapham.
Rory sees the Conservative Party
as representing aspiration and
opportunity. Social mobility for
all is something he is passionate
about; the UK is among the
worst of the 37 OECD nations for
income mobility, according to a
report published by the Sutton
Trust.
Supporting small businesses
and the high street are priorities
as Rory cites vibrant high streets
as the foundation of strong and
supportive local communities.
He helped establish the Clapham
Junction Business Improvement
District and is currently involved
in creating one in Tooting.
Youth crime is another priority,
again using the Public Health
approach plus more policing
and tougher sentencing. He
thinks Stop and Search can be
an effective tool, but too often it
is carried out in ways that may be
seen to be aggressive, targeted,
and racist.
Climate change and protecting
the environment are also
crucially important to him, and he
is committed to taking action to
achieve carbon neutrality targets.
Although still learning about the
charms of our four wards, Rory
is a fan of Brickwood Café and
their excellent ham and cheese
toasties, and the vast range and
long opening hours of Westbury’s
Chemist, plus, of course our
beautiful Streatham and Tooting
Commons.
Scott Ainslie MEP,
Green Party
Scott, a Lambeth Councillor
since 2014, was elected MEP for
London earlier this year and will
stand down as MEP if elected.
Scott and his sister were
brought up in a council flat in
Edinburgh by their single mum.
He was “sporty not academic”
at school but discovered reading
at high school. A “wonderful
teacher” helped nurture this and
discovered he could sing, which
led to starring roles in school
productions like My Fair Lady and
Fiddler on the Roof.
Scott went to Edinburgh Napier
University to do Business Studies,
spending a year at National Cash
Registers in Ealing, where he
got involved in student theatre.
After university, he went to drama
school, Mountview, and became a
professional actor. Early success
(in horror movie Zombie Diaries
for example) allowed him to buy
a home in Streatham where
he’s lived for over 20 years and
has a son and daughter at local
schools.
Scott was briefly a member of the
Labour Party, but in 2009, The
Age of Stupid, a documentary
about global warming was shown
at the Streatham Festival. It
sparked him to campaign on
environmental issues, and he
and the late Briged Hall set
up Sustainable Streatham.
He eventually joined Jonathan
Bartley promoting the Green
Party in St Leonard’s Ward, where
Scott is proud of his work to save
The Glebe sheltered housing.
Among his top priorities for
Streatham are to make it safer,
cleaner, greener, and fairer -
a clean transport revolution
with fewer cars and congestion,
reliable train services, reducing
air pollution, and accessibility
for all to Streatham’s shops and
services.
Scott loves the people here-
“there’s a real Streatham
community”, the High Rd
where “you can get practically
everything” and the Little Big
Peace Festival and Streatham
Festival.

In 1957 he became minster of
Defence and later, minister of

being entangled in the Profumo

best remembered as airey

in the successful campaign to
secure margaret thatcher the
Conservative leadership in 1975.
Keith Hill,
streatham’s
first Labour MP,
was a politics
lecturer, and
later a Union

London at the Department of
environment, transport and
the regions, minister of state

him Streatham’s first Lib Dem MP.

Once again, the thrale Charity is inviting local
organisations that help people in need, hardship or
distress to apply for grants and is making £40,000
available to support local causes.
Over the past year, thrale has supported 22 groups
across south London with grants ranging between
£500 and £5,000 that are estimated to have
benefited 1,600 people directly.
One organisation supported for the first time by
thrale was the Valley Road Patient Participation
Group. thrale funded a weekly exercise group for
older people which, as well as helping people to feel
fitter and stronger, brings people together and helps
to overcome isolation and loneliness.
Another group supported for the first time was
Opening doors london, where thrale’s funding
will help to provide activities for older LGBt people in
Lambeth, who up until now have had to travel out of
the Borough to find them.
Other Streatham groups supported were
Spires, the nehemiah Project, and Streatham
drop-in Centre for Asylum Seekers and
Refugees.
the charity also supported a handful of groups in
Tooting for the first time.
since thrale started its grant giving programme
around ten years ago, it has awarded approximately
£300,000 in grants to 40 different organisations.
If you are interested in applying, please visit www.
thralealmshouses.org.uk to download an application
form or contact info@thralealmshouses.org.uk
for more information. the application process is
designed to be simple and straightforward and
the deadline is 3rd of January. We look forward
to hearing from you, especially if you have never
applied for a grant from thrale before.

streatham alternate Captain rupe Quiney is a happy
man! The RedHawks are flying high after the team
entered the Christmas run-in with 13 straight wins in
all competitions. streatham arena has been packed
out with fans in recent games as the team continue
to enjoy their best run of form in years.
a big 13-3 win over rivals Invicta Dynamos

is that the great local support will continue to boost
the team across the festive period.
“skating out in front of a big crowd gets everyone

game as the top of the league is so close at the
minute… the streatham crowd have seen us suffer
some heavy defeats in the past so it’s good to put
on such big displays in front of them when they turn
out in numbers.”
the team now face title rivals Chelmsford and solent
in upcoming games. the season runs through to
april but already a gap is emerging between the top
three teams and the rest of the pack so maximum
points are crucial for streatham.
“With a couple weeks of relatively sparse games, it’s
important we get some momentum going in the lead
up to Christmas” explained Quiney.

CONteNts dECEMBER 2019 The festive season has arrived in Streatham, and we are delighted to have, once again, partnered with the instreatham Business Improvement District to bring you this beautiful bumper issue of the magazine. see The Streatham Book of Christmas 2019, created by the BID, in the centre pages. It contains plenty of ideas for going out, gift shopping, eating out, and entertainment in streatham, plus a guide to some of the great local salons and spas to help you look festive and fabulous. the big news is that local singer-songwriter, Lianne La Havas, (Glastonbury, Isle of Wight, supporting alicia Keys, Paloma Faith are just some of her credits) will be turning on streatham’s Christmas lights on 7th December. spoiler alert: streatham Common has (sadly) never been twinned with meribel (see p3 of the streatham Book of Chritsmas). It was a Pr stunt by a ski holiday firm a few years ago. Although it is possible to ski on the Common if the powder is right….après ski at the rookery Café, anyone? It wouldn’t be right to ignore the General election on December 12, so we have been meeting the streatham Parliamentary Candidates from the main four parties to find out a bit about them , since the only certainty is that we are getting a new mP. there’s a lot of agreement among them about local issues – and favourite streatham spots. thanks to each of them for standing to serve streatham. • 6. 6 | heart streatham General election December 2019 JAnE WROE WRiGHt One thing is certain about the 12 december’s General Election; Streatham will be getting a new MP. We met the key Parliamentary Candidates to find out a bit more about them. Bell Ribeiro-Addy. labour streatham resident Bell grew up in a council house in Brixton in an extended Ghanaian family. her mother ran a nursery and education was a top priority. a keen reader Bell excelled at school and credits an exceptional teacher for her winning an assisted Place at streatham and Clapham high school. she studied Biomedical science with ethics at the University of Bradford but encountered levels of racism in the city she had not experienced growing up in south London. she became race Relations Officer at the Student Union, then the NUs National Black Students’ Officer for the NUs after doing a master’s in medical Law and ethics at Queen mary's, University of London. after several roles with the Labour Party, Bell is Chief of staff to Diane abbott. as a left- wing candidate, her selection was not universally popular with the local Labour Party, but she intends to be a unifier, trying to heal rifts with a personal approach. Transport is a key priority, as streatham’s trains are overcrowded and unreliable and the high rd. does not feel safe and healthy for active transport like cycling or walking. Bell is committed to lobbying for major infrastructure investment for streatham. she also believes Lambeth could improve the outcomes of its property deals to help tackle the shortage of affordable housing. Youth crime is another top priority, and Bell

  • 8. 8 | heart streatham advocates the Public health approach pioneered in Glasgow. this involves multiple agencies trying to understand and address its causes, responding to incidents and working towards the long-term rehabilitation of perpetrators. top streatham favourites for Bell are streatham’s Kite Day plus El Chico’s and Talay Thai, and she used to party at the White Lion and the old mint Bar (now exhibitB). Helen thompson, liberal democrats helen was born in Lambeth then moved to hampshire with her parents and two sisters. her degree was in english Literature at Cardiff University, then a master’s in International relations at the Diplomatic academy of Vienna. she lead the Civil service in the International Development Office. Overseas postings included Kabul where she helped supervise the first democratic elections in afghanistan after the war and worked to empower women and girls. helen left the Civil service in 2016 to work for a humanitarian charity supporting refugees around the world and joined the Liberal Democrats. she has their team in streatham to success in the may european elections. helen’s priorities are defending our institutions – Parliament and the Judiciary – and she is in favour of reforming the house of Lords and the voting system. After a commitment to fight to stop Brexit, helen’s top priorities for streatham include air quality and climate change. she is opposed to the expansion of heathrow airport and advocates transport infrastructure improvements, better active transport options, Playstreets, and low traffic neighbourhoods. she would also campaign for the Crossrail2 route to come to streatham. Youth services are another priority, including providing professional youth workers and safe spaces for young people as part of a Public health approach to knife and gun crime. as a local resident, helen loves the sense of community and neighbourliness of streatham. “there is a warmth and friendliness. People feel they belong here.” her top local venues are Streatham Common, where she goes running. she loves Streatham’s independent coffee shops and places to eat and drink, so it’s no surprise that Streatham Food Festival every June is one of her favourite local events.

  • 10. 10 | heart streatham Rory O’Broin, Conservative Rory, a lawyer at an international insurance company, is a Conservative Councillor in his home area, Wandsworth. He has been discovering Streatham via his brother, who lives here, and through his work supporting Streatham Conservatives this summer. His family came from Ireland to Oxfordshire in the 80s, where he attended an international school before going to Durham University to study Law. Rory moved to London to complete his legal training and has lived in South London ever since. He has a seven-year-old daughter and three-year-old son and is a governor at a Primary School in Clapham. Rory sees the Conservative Party as representing aspiration and opportunity. Social mobility for all is something he is passionate about; the UK is among the worst of the 37 OECD nations for income mobility, according to a report published by the Sutton Trust. Supporting small businesses and the high street are priorities as Rory cites vibrant high streets as the foundation of strong and supportive local communities. He helped establish the Clapham Junction Business Improvement District and is currently involved in creating one in Tooting. Youth crime is another priority, again using the Public Health approach plus more policing and tougher sentencing. He thinks Stop and Search can be an effective tool, but too often it is carried out in ways that may be seen to be aggressive, targeted, and racist. Climate change and protecting the environment are also crucially important to him, and he is committed to taking action to achieve carbon neutrality targets. Although still learning about the charms of our four wards, Rory is a fan of Brickwood Café and their excellent ham and cheese toasties, and the vast range and long opening hours of Westbury’s Chemist, plus, of course our beautiful Streatham and Tooting Commons. Scott Ainslie MEP, Green Party Scott, a Lambeth Councillor since 2014, was elected MEP for London earlier this year and will stand down as MEP if elected. Scott and his sister were brought up in a council flat in Edinburgh by their single mum. He was “sporty not academic” at school but discovered reading at high school. A “wonderful teacher” helped nurture this and discovered he could sing, which led to starring roles in school productions like My Fair Lady and Fiddler on the Roof. Scott went to Edinburgh Napier University to do Business Studies, spending a year at National Cash Registers in Ealing, where he got involved in student theatre. After university, he went to drama school, Mountview, and became a professional actor. Early success (in horror movie Zombie Diaries for example) allowed him to buy a home in Streatham where he’s lived for over 20 years and has a son and daughter at local schools. Scott was briefly a member of the Labour Party, but in 2009, The Age of Stupid, a documentary about global warming was shown at the Streatham Festival. It sparked him to campaign on environmental issues, and he and the late Briged Hall set up Sustainable Streatham. He eventually joined Jonathan Bartley promoting the Green Party in St Leonard’s Ward, where Scott is proud of his work to save The Glebe sheltered housing. Among his top priorities for Streatham are to make it safer, cleaner, greener, and fairer - a clean transport revolution with fewer cars and congestion, reliable train services, reducing air pollution, and accessibility for all to Streatham’s shops and services. Scott loves the people here- “there’s a real Streatham community”, the High Rd where “you can get practically everything” and the Little Big Peace Festival and Streatham Festival. general election 2019 continued

  • 40. 40 | heart streatham Once again, the thrale Charity is inviting local organisations that help people in need, hardship or distress to apply for grants and is making £40,000 available to support local causes. Over the past year, thrale has supported 22 groups across south London with grants ranging between £500 and £5,000 that are estimated to have benefited 1,600 people directly. One organisation supported for the first time by thrale was the Valley Road Patient Participation Group. thrale funded a weekly exercise group for older people which, as well as helping people to feel fitter and stronger, brings people together and helps to overcome isolation and loneliness. Another group supported for the first time was Opening doors london, where thrale’s funding will help to provide activities for older LGBt people in Lambeth, who up until now have had to travel out of the Borough to find them. Other Streatham groups supported were Spires, the nehemiah Project, and Streatham drop-in Centre for Asylum Seekers and Refugees. the charity also supported a handful of groups in Tooting for the first time. since thrale started its grant giving programme around ten years ago, it has awarded approximately £300,000 in grants to 40 different organisations. If you are interested in applying, please visit www. thralealmshouses.org.uk to download an application form or contact info@thralealmshouses.org.uk for more information. the application process is designed to be simple and straightforward and the deadline is 3rd of January. We look forward to hearing from you, especially if you have never applied for a grant from thrale before. 444-446 Streatham High Road, London SW16 3PX 0208 764 1806 • sales@mediworld.co.uk www.mediworld.co.uk S TA I R L I F T S - R E C L I N E R C H A I R S - B P M O N I TO R S - S U P P O R T B E LT S thrale Charity PAul lEHMAnn, tHRAlE CHARitY

  • 42. 42 | heart streatham streatham alternate Captain rupe Quiney is a happy man! The RedHawks are flying high after the team entered the Christmas run-in with 13 straight wins in all competitions. streatham arena has been packed out with fans in recent games as the team continue to enjoy their best run of form in years. a big 13-3 win over rivals Invicta Dynamos emphasised the point, but with some big games to come, no one is getting too carried away. the hope is that the great local support will continue to boost the team across the festive period. “skating out in front of a big crowd gets everyone excited” said local lad Quiney, whose father iced with the team through the 80’s and 90’s. “We know we have to perform well in every single game as the top of the league is so close at the minute… the streatham crowd have seen us suffer some heavy defeats in the past so it’s good to put on such big displays in front of them when they turn out in numbers.” the team now face title rivals Chelmsford and solent in upcoming games. the season runs through to april but already a gap is emerging between the top three teams and the rest of the pack so maximum points are crucial for streatham. “With a couple weeks of relatively sparse games, it’s important we get some momentum going in the lead up to Christmas” explained Quiney. the RedHawks are offering two Kids for a Quid home games! Sunday 8 december v Haringey Huskies - face off 6.45pm Saturday 17 January v Cardiff Fire - face off 5.30pm a full paying adult must accompany, and you must present a copy of this magazine. maximum two kids per adult. streathamhockey.co.uk streatham redhawks Ice hockey report dAVid CARR
