Happy 2019! This month we are focused on health, fitness and wellbeing options in Streatham, and with the gyms, yoga studios, classes, and leisure centre, as well as two Commons for sport and running, we have most bases covered locally.
We’re delighted to welcome some fantastic new businesses to Streatham and have already enjoyed wonderful classes at Yogarise and Element Fitness, and lunched at Baby Spinach. All three have just opened in the same cool, new premises in the High Parade on Streatham High Road. The Yoga Edge hot yoga studio opened in December, and already has a clutch of 5-star reviews from happy local yogis too.
Inside we have Valentines celebration recommendations, the Streatham Gourmet reviews again, info on the Heathrow Consultation as it affects Streatham, remembering Streatham Dame June Whitfield, What's On in the area and the local live music gig list. Happy New Year Streatham!

Your streatham Valentine
We took to twitter, Facebook and Instagram to ask
for your favourite romantic spots in streatham
top picks for dinner were
Streatham Kitchen and
hood, with Streatham
Wine house third. also
mentioned were art and
Craft2, Italian Bistro,
addomme, Brooks & Gao,
Bar 61, the Leigham Well,
the Bull, and el Chico’s
for a fun vibe, and the
hideaway Valentine’s special.
streatham WI suggested the
manor arms, where “the food
is always fantastic, and it can be
romantic if the lights are low”.
“I always pull in the 5 Bells”, tweeted one
of streatham’s great romantics, surpassed
only by the guy who suggested sizzler’s opposite
streatham station.
Nando’s was @streathamworthy’s choice because
“it’s the only restaurant in streatham with a queue
outside on Valentine’s Day”. @timCrowther’s
beloved will be happier, “I can’t think of anything
more romantic than grabbing a
few choice beers and a decent
bottle of wine from art and
Craft and enjoying each
other’s company in the
intimate setting of the
streatham Kitchen”.
streathamites rated the
Rookery as the top spot
for romance, with so many
special places and views of
sunsets over south west London.
Clarry mcDonald even suggested a
1960s -style love in on the Common.

Beady-eyed locals will have noticed a hidden
gem opposite the Manor Arms in Mitcham Lane
- Streatham Kitchen. With around 16 covers
and simple décor, the Roti Brothers of Crystal
Palace food truck fame opened their intimate
restaurant in spring last year and it could easily
be overlooked. But for any serious Streatham
foodie, this would be a crime. SW16 Instagram
is ablaze with mouth-watering photos of their
juicy burgers – and the food lives up to the hype.
The chef treated us calamari, not on the menu,
which were crisp and came with a fresh salsa.
We ordered two appetizers and a starter – the
former arriving as ample starter size and the
latter big enough to be a main! The Padron
peppers were excellently salty (for those of
us who have enjoyed the recent Netflix series
Salt Fat Acid Heat, the importance of this can’t
be overstated) and chicken wings were tangy
and dripping in sauce. The starter of pan-fried
ripened plantain and coconut bean stew was
beautiful, with the stew topped with pansies and
served across a whole plantain. This dish was
the first of two with a South American flavour
from chefs with Venezuelan and Argentinian
heritage.
We had to try the famous burgers. My
companion had the buttermilk chicken chilli
pesto burger, which she described as “the
right kind of oily”. All burgers are served in
a fluffy brioche bun with either sweet potato
or rosemary chunky chips. I ate the Pabellon
Criollo, a traditional Venezuelan dish of slow
cooked shredded beef, black beans, plantain,
avocado and a fried egg. The flavours perfectly
balanced each other – with the fresh avocado
and smooth beans cutting through the salty
beef.

Pellegrino, but with art & Craft a stone’s
throw away you could easily use your
meal out as an excuse for craft
beer or a quality bottle of wine.
We had no room for dessert
but ordered a mango and
passion fruit pavlova anyway
- extra calories allowed
because not drinking!
the meringue was just
as it should be, crisp and
crumbling with a gooey centre,
with the sharp tropical fruit
balancing its sweetness. again,
the portion was huge for two people
let alone one, so make sure you come
with an empty stomach.
streatham Kitchen is an important
part of the ever-growing
streatham food scene –
offering top quality, innovative
dishes packed with flavour.
It’s a good idea to book

many of
us recently
received this
leaflet through
our letterboxes
informing us
of the current
consultation
on heathrow
airspace and Future
Operations. this is an
important issue that could
severely impact streatham
because the proposals under
consideration include changes
to airspace, runways, frequency
of flights and other factors
assuming a third runway will
be built at heathrow. even if
the third runway is not built,
heathrow proposes to make
more use of its existing two to
increase the number of flights
using the airport. all proposals
involve changes to flight paths
and the prevailing directional
guidelines for arriving and
departing planes in various wind
conditions.
the proposals affect noise
levels, night flights, and changes
to the areas that
are overflown.
Communities under
new flight paths
will be the losers
in the proposal
and winners would
gain respite from
heathrow’s aircraft
noise for the first time.
the online consultation has a
nifty mapping system in which
you can enter your postcode
or area and see how your area
might be affected. For example,
this map is of the new arrivals
flight path options scenario for
Streatham. We are set firmly in
the “losers” category, overflown
by up to 47 flights per hour
with up to 32 of these per hour
making noise over 65 decibels.
there are a series of
Consultation events taking place,
the closest of which looks to be

We are redesigning Heathrow’s
future airspace, which will mean new
flightpaths over new areas. Please

Throughout this consultation we would

around Heathrow
• How we will operate our three runways
in the future, if approval is granted for
Heathrow expansion
• How we can make better use of our
two existing runways

June Whitfield Obituary
MARK BERY
Streatham’s very own
comedy legend sadly passed
away on 28 December 2018
at the age of 93.
Dame June Rosemary
Whitfield was born in Mount
Ephraim Lane, Streatham
on 11 November 1925 to
John and Bertha Whitfield.
Her father was Managing
Director of Dictograph
Telephones (started by her
grandfather in Yorkshire) and
also a Streatham Councilor
in Wandsworth Council. The
family later moved to Palace
Road.
June’s parents were keen
amateur actors and she
made her stage debut
aged three with Robinson’s
School of Dancing run by
Nancy Robinson, based in
Carmichael Hall on the site
of the old Streatham bus
garage. In November 1937,
June was chosen from the
dance school to perform at a
charity ball in aid of the South
London Women’s Hospital
at the Streatham Baths.
June’s early career included
a performance with the
Streatham Shakespearean
Players in The Winter’s Tale
in 1937.
June attended Streatham Hill
High School (now Streatham
and Clapham High School).
She was evacuated to
Bognor Regis during World
War 2, and went to RADA
in 1944, embarking on what
was to become a magnificent
career spanning seven
decades. Her first break
was a lead role in the radio
comedy Take It from Here
from 1953, given to her by
co-writer Denis Norden.
In 1954, The Norwood News
took pride in reporting the
return of June Whitfield to

the area on 26 February
- she appeared as Sally
McBride in Love from Judy
at the Streatham Hill Theatre
watched by her proud
parents who had already
seen the show five times!
TV followed, including
appearances with
Tony Hancock and in
1966, June played the lead in
sitcom Beggar My Neighbour.
She also appeared in four
Carry On films: Nurse (1959),
Abroad (1972), Girls (1973)
and Columbus (1992).
June had perfect comic
timing and was sought
after as a partner by many
stars like Roy Hudd (also a
Streatham resident) in the
News Huddlines (writers
included Glenn Mitchell,
also from Streatham). She
was best known as the
long-suffering wife in Terry
and June (1979) following
on from their partnership in
Happy Ever after (1974),
and of course as Edina’s
batty mother in Absolutely
Fabulous.
June was recognized with
many honours and awards,
becoming Dame Commander
of the Order of the British
Empire in 2017.
June had a season ticket
to watch husband Tim’s
team, Wimbledon, where
she had a season ticket and
became President of the
Supporters Club. She never
forgot her Streatham roots,
and returned to the Robinson
School of Dancing to present
prizes, and to Streatham Hill
and Clapham High to events
including the Centenary
Anniversary celebrations
of the School. She also
switched on the Christmas
tree lights in Streatham in
recent memory.
June Whitfield was a comedy
legend, one of the golden
age of British actresses; she
will be fondly remembered.

YOGA EMBODIED
I booked online for a Vinyasa
Flow class. Not cheap at £15
for a drop-in session, though
that seems to be the going
rate. There is currently an offer
of 5 weeks at £65. On arrival,
the room was set up and
calming. Only having practiced
Hatha yoga, this class was a
bit challenging for me, Teacher
Anya encouraged us to go with
what felt right, but I don’t think
this class would be suitable
for a complete beginner. There
was a mixture of holding poses
and stretching together with
breathing and meditation.
I did not feel relaxed when I left
the studio, maybe because I
had not practiced for a while or
perhaps this style of yoga was
not for me. There were 9 of us
plus Anya - including 2 men.
Although it did not bother me I
think this should be mentioned
on the website in case people
are looking for single sex
classes.

WELBEING95 YOGA
STUDIO & SPA
I did Power Vinyasa yoga on
a Saturday, 11am. I booked
online, though it was a long
process. There are many
membership options available,
all displayed before the single
session option I was after.
A single session costs
£12.99 but the studio is
currently offering 14-day
trial of unlimited classes at
£19.99 which I went for! Later
found out this also includes
a 20-minute massage in the
Spa – Yay!
I’m a yoga beginner and hadn’t
practised for a few months so I
wasn’t sure how this would go.
Marieyama, the manager, was
very welcoming and helpful.
She gave me a tour around the
studio and spa - a very clean
space and changing rooms
were tidy.
There were 9 of us including
instructor, Stephane, who was
a good teacher and made
poses attainable for both
beginners and experienced
practitioners. The class was
mixed but mainly female. I left
feeling calm and awakened.

In the spirit of all things
'New Year, New You'
we were asked by our
colleagues at Heart
Streatham magazine to
help review some of the
health and fitness options
that our fabulous high
street has to offer. As a
yoga returner (I practiced
a lot in my twenties) and
almost two decades later I
thought it was about time
I reintroduced myself to
my toes! So, we, the staff
team at BID HQ took on
the challenge of reviewing
a selection of new and
established Yoga Studios
and classes along the
length of our 2.3miles of
continuous high street.
Whether you live in the hill,
central or Common ends
of Streatham, you can find
a local class that is exactly
what you need to feel good.

THE YOGA EDGE
This stylish new studio first
set up in Crystal Palace 3
years ago and is newly opened
in Streatham opposite the
Royal Mail Collection Centre
on Prentis Road. Already the
Yoga Edge Streatham has
scored five-star Google reviews
to match the Crystal Palace
studio!
I was greeted warmly by the
class instructor, and the studio
was also lovely and warm,
apparently to allow you to
stretch that little bit further
whilst detoxifying too. All good
for this time of year! I opted
for the Hot Dynamic Yoga at
Open Level, and there’s a full
timetable of classes from early
mornings to evening sessions.
I think if you had never
done Yoga before the Open
Level would be a little bit of
a struggle, but we were all
encouraged to work at our
pace in a class of yogis mixed
by age, sex, race and gender
that felt very inclusive - there
was certainly a lot of love in the
air. I left feeling hot and sweaty
but full of life! It was very easy
to sign up as a member online
and begin booking classes.
I picked the drop-in rate for
£16 but they have a great
introductory offer of 30 days
unlimited yoga for £40.

YOGARISE
The stunning Yogarise has just
opened its doors on up-and-
coming High Parade. a five-
minute walk from Streatham
Hill Station. This is their second
venture, the first being at the
Bussey Building in Peckham
since 2014.
The beautifully equipped
studios have fantastic facilities
and share their home with
Element Fitness and Baby
Spinach, spawn of acclaimed
East Dulwich cafe, Spinach.
This a real hang out spot as
well as a studio and the vibe is
relaxed and welcoming.
I did the Dynamic Vinyasa
Flow class - energetic but
achievable. I wouldn’t suggest
a total beginner dive in but
having done yoga before I
was aware of the poses and
encouraged to take it at my
own pace.
I booked via the Yogarise app
which was easy to navigate.
The only thing that could have
made it even easier would be
the ability to pay via PayPal, but
that certainly isn’t a criticism.
There’s a host of sessions
from 7.30 in the morning until
8pm in the evening and lots of
day time classes with a broad
range of styles and teachers. It
would take a bit of sampling to
find the right class for you, but
at their amazing introductory
offer of just £6 for a drop in or
£52 for 10 off peak sessions
it’s certainly worth giving it a
go.

BETTER YOGA
For those of us at the
Streatham Common end of the
High Road, I was pleasantly
surprised to see the wonderful
new hot yoga studio at the
Leisure Centre. This specially
designed studio on the ground
floor has heated panels in the
ceiling gently warming the
room to 32 degrees helping
you to stretch.
With a selection of classes
throughout the week and
open from 6am to 10pm there
are times to suit everyone.
Unfortunately, I was unable
to get into one of the classes
as they were fully booked
(well done all those organised
yogis!) but as this is the most
reasonably priced drop in class
I can totally understand why.
The Leisure Centre offers a
range of hot yoga and yoga
classes and with a monthly
class membership at just
£30.85 per month this is a
great option for those who
fancy trying yoga as part of a
new health regime this new
year.

Ice hockey Update
streatham enter a busy February looking to
maintain some momentum and build on recent
big crowds at streatham Ice arena.
three home games on consecutive weekends
give the team the perfect platform to climb up
the table and secure a higher seed for the post
season Play-Offs. recent victories over Basing-
stoke Bison and Invicta Dynamos on home ice
have boosted the local support, with the game
against the Bison decided on penalty shots. “It
was good to bounce back after a poor end to
2018” said head Coach, Jeremy Cornish. “We
started the year with a great attitude skating
hard and battling for every puck, and now it’s
good to see that returning in our performances.”
as I write, streatham are in 6th position in the
National Ice hockey League with 16 games to
go. In February the team host mK thunder, Pe-
terborough Phantoms and swindon Wildcats in
an action-packed schedule. the redhawks are
still without the injured rupe Quiney and Nate
Gregory but are otherwise at full strength.
streatham recently handed a debut to local
teenage goalie Brett shepherd who helped his
team to beat Invicta Dynamos 5-3. shepherd
rose through the ranks of the junior club at
streatham that has teams ranging from under
7’s all the way up to u18’s.
“having Brett make a start was a real positive”
continued Cornish. “It’s always a big test for
young kids to break through into senior hockey
and really pleasing to see Brett is a local boy. “
