What made this breakthrough a turning point for the field of
genetics?
[not to exceed 5 sentences]; 2 points each
1 1940 Discovering genetic
transposition ("jumping
genes").
Barbara McClintock
Transposable elements (TEs), also known as "jumping genes,"
are DNA sequences that can move from one location on the
genome to another. According to research, these sequences are
essential for the species' growth, development, and evolution. A
quarter of them, for example, are in charge of working on the
genetic switches that turn on and off and can alter protein
synthesis and gene action.
2. 2 1993 Develops genomic mismatch
scanning.
Patrick Brown
A quick way to look for genes in families by comparing
individual genomes.
3 1994 Tests gene alterations on vein
grafts.
Victor Dzau
The new genes help make the veins resistant to clogging by
plaque after they are grafted onto arteries in heart bypass
surgery.
3. 4 1960 Cloned the second live
mammal.
Ryuzo Yanagimachi
It is a turning point for the field of genetics, allowing the
development of the human sperm penetration assay, which
could aid in determining human fertility potential.
5 1950 Discovered the hereditary
nature of Wilson disease.
Alexander Gordon Bearn
Which provided an important model for the identification,
diagnosis, and treatment of other genetic diseases, served to
bridge the gap between genetics and medicine that existed in
the 1950s.
