What Is Movement Education
• According to the Australian Curriculum (2012), teaching movement
education will help children ‘to acquire, apply and evaluate movement
skills, concepts and strategies to respond confidently, competently and
creatively in a variety of physical activity contexts and setting’. The
engagement in movement based learning will help children to develop
their personal, social, cultural, environmental and physical and health
practices and outcomes (ACARA, 2012).
• According to the Health Promotion Journal of Australia : children need to
learn the basic fundamental skills the same way they learn their ABC. By
acquiring these skills such as throwing ,running , jumping and catching ,
students will enhance their well being and their physical and active
lifestyle(Barnett, Hardy, Lubans, Cliff, Okely, Hills, & Morgan, 2013).
Why teaching Movement education
• Statistics shows that children are becoming more obese
• not just due to fast food intake but to the lack of physical education
as well.
• Lack of understanding of the basic fundamental moving skills
in order for children to play well on their own
• This will make them to withdraw from physical activity
• However teaching them fundamental skills and the physical literacy,
will give them the confidence to engage and be part of physical
activities.
The basic fundamental skills
• static balance
• sprint run
• vertical jump
• side gallop
• catch
• kick
• hop
• skip
• leap
• overarm throw
• two-hand strike
• dodge.
Some strategies for fundamental movements: Initial, formative,
Mature
• We start by explaining the task : Basic informing what they are going
to play .
• Then we Refine the strategies: Explain and give children cues to refine
their movements
• Then we start a sequence of fun activities so children can engage and
experience these movements
• For those who have difficulty performing we have to simplify the
games and the rules and for those who are practicing well and quickly
we can extend and make the game more challenging
Rationale of Teaching MOVEMENT EDUCATION
• Understanding and the acquisition of movement education is
essential for teaching in general and for health and physical education
in particular.
• By helping students to learn about movement education and about
the basic fundamental skills , we are helping them to be creative,
confident and interactive community members not only across school
years but in all aspects of life. In addition to this, movement will
enhance the pupils cognitive and social and behavioural skills .
The Significance of teaching movement skills
• Movement skills does not come by itself, it is rather learned and
practiced and acquired through a long process of engagement and
participation. However, to ensure that all students are participating in
physical education we have to make sure that they are getting the
right knowledge and encouragement from their early years of
schooling. This will be true firstly, by providing them with the
knowledge and explanation of physical literacy. Secondly by teaching
them the fundamental movement skills such as throwing kicking ,
running or jumping, which will make them confident and enthusiastic
about participating in physical activities.
