This document defines grammar as a set of rules for combining words into larger units in a language. It discusses traditional versus contemporary definitions of grammar, as well as conscious versus unconscious knowledge of grammar rules. Descriptive grammar aims to objectively describe a language's structural patterns, while prescriptive grammar provides do's and don'ts based on purity or pedagogical objectives. Some examples of common prescriptive rules are provided.
6. Descriptive rules vs. Prescriptive rules
Descriptive rules attempt to describe objectively
and systematically the structural patterns of a
language.
Prescriptive rules are partial descriptions of the
language based on puristic or pedagogical
objectives. They typically include do's and don't's
such as "Never end a sentence with a preposition"
or "Don't split infinitives."

Examples of Prescriptive
Rules
Don’t use like as a conjunction, as in
He speaks like his father does.
Don’t use between you and I.
Don’t split an infinitive, as in to actually feel.
Don’t end a sentence with a preposition.
8. Exercise
A good time was had by all of us.
We weren’t sure if or not we were invited.
We think that it is hot to sit in the sun.
The large hall was containing over 500
people.
Surprisingly, mushrooms are unusual to
find at this time of the year.

Grammar is this sense is syntax.
Some combinations of words are possible in English and others are not. The word “much” in the second sentence is wrongly positioned.
These rules are learned unconsciously by children as they acquire their native tongue. Writing about grammar does not bring it into existence any more than writing about biology creates living cells!
In other words, knowing the rules in evaluative and operational senses does not mean that you can say what the rules are.
You study grammar if you want to be able to analyze your language. The analytic grammar makes explicit the knowledge of rules with which you operate when you use the language. Analytic grammar is more about description.
Descriptive rule: describe how people use their language. The evidence of validating descriptive rules is drawn from the knowledge pf English speakers have of their language as well as from samples of their actual use of the language.
Prescriptive rules specify which usages should be adopted or avoided. Due to social importance of certain variety.
Prescriptive rules are important in writing and formal style.
Which of the combinations of words below seem to you to be possible English sentences? If you are not sure, say so. Where there is a problem with a sentence, try to pinpoint it and then change the sentence to avoid the problem.
