Hagar makes a long-term commitment to each child. Hagar does whatever it takes, as long as it takes to restore the broken lives of trafficked, abused, and sexually exploited women and children. (read slowly)
When abused children are rescued, they are brought to Hagar’s Recovery Shelters. Some of these children have been rescued very young, so Hagar’s commitment lasts for many years. Then, the child’s family background is investigated. If at all possible, children will be reintegrated to their families of origin, at an appropriate time in the healing journey. Sadly, in half of the cases that Hagar deals with, children who have been abandoned, sexually abused, or trafficked cannot be safely reunited with their families. For these children, Hagar provides a long-term home in as close to a normal family environment as possible. Typically, this is in a carefully screened and trained foster home, with loving foster parents who have made a long-term commitment.
Now, here’s what we can do to come alongside them.
We (our chapter) can Transform One Child’s Life by providing an educational scholarship to One trafficked or abused child. WHY EDUCATION? Education is powerful. It is a basic human right. It enables children to break the cycle of poverty and inequity that can lead to trafficking, gender-based violence and other human rights abuse. Education transforms lives, dreams, and futures.
Each child rescued and brought to Hagar has a story. Every story is sad, but each is different. Some have been abused, some abandoned, and some trafficked for sex or labor. Although every child has different needs, one need is always the same. Education.
Few abused and trafficked children have been to school before. They begin their education at Hagar’s ‘catch-up school’, the community learning center. They are taught two grade levels each year. -They learn reading (khmer and english), writing, math, and science. -CLC classes are for Grade 1 to Grade 6
After school, the students are invited to attend the afternoon ‘community club’ at the Community Learning Center for worship, sports, music, dance, and other extracurricular activities.
Then, once a student is caught up to age peers, children are integrated into Christian and private schools (for middle and high school). In 2009, over 260 children received educational scholarships. A scholarship to support one child for one year costs $600. A scholarship provides tuition, books, uniforms, and transportation. Transportation is provided according to their location (pick-up by Hagar vehicle or they are provided with a bicycle, etc.). What it really provides is transformed lives. (Show CLC video)
Here are some stories from students from Hagar. Hagar makes a long-term commitment to each child. When abused children are rescued, they are brought to Hagar’s Recovery Shelters.
Leak Leak’s sister brought her to organization (LICHADO), when she learned that their father had raped her and had planned to sell her to a karaoke bar. The organization transferred Leak to Hagar’s Aftercare program. When Leak arrived at Hagar, she felt hopeless and betrayed. She did not trust people. Now at 17, Leak shows great potential for her future. Leak has a housemother that cares for her, she enjoys counseling sessions, and she aspires to study at the university after she finishes high school. Through Hagar’s Scholarship Program, Leak is now studying in grade 8 at Cambodia’s Methodist School. She would like to be translator.
Rithy Rithy came to live at Hagar Foster Home when he was 12 years old. As a child, he had been abused by his mother. When his parents died, Rithy joined other orphaned street children. Feeling hopeless and alone, he became addicted to drugs. An organization, World Vision, found Rithy on the street, and then brought him to Hagar’s Foster Care program. He enrolled in classes at Hagar’s catch up school, where he was able to learn English, mathematics, and how to play music. Finishing at the top of his class, Rithy completed High School at Sala Mom School! With Hagar’s support, Rithy has now completed all undergraduate class work and is studying pediatrics. “Now that I have the chance to study at Medical School, I plan to finish my studies and work to help the poor people in the rural areas by providing medical care and treatment. This is my desire for the future. ” said Rithy.
Chanty When Chanty was six years old her mother died, leaving seven children. Her aunt offered to take her and her sister, and sold them to a brothel for $100.00 each. Chanty lived behind closed doors, fearing she would be asked to go with a man, as other girls had done. After one year in the brothel, she was rescued from the brothel, and transferred to Hagar. Years later, her sister was located and brought to Hagar. Chanty and her sister live with a foster care family, attend school. They receive regular counseling to overcome the trauma, loss, and grief they experienced at very young ages. Now, Chanty is in the midst of finishing grade 12, after attending Hagar’s school. She wants to study to become a missionary of God.
Botum Before Botum came to Hagar, she was abused by her step-father, a Frenchman. When her brothers reported the abuse to the police, Botum was taken to Hagar. When she arrived at Hagar, she felt strange and kept to herself. Now, she has many friends and studies grade two at Hagar’s catch-up school. Her favorite subject is English and Mathematics. Sometimes, Botum lacks confidence or wishes to play by herself; but on other occasions, she enjoys the company of friends and has bravely performed with the dance team in front of an audience. Her teachers report that she is clever girl and good student. Botum says, “Now I am very happy, because I have friends, education, and I get warmth (from others).”
We can help children like Leak….Rithy…Chanty….and Botum. By committing to raise $600.00 we can give one child school for a year. We can transform one life.
