3. What’s Interior Design:
According to New York school of interior design:
Interior design is all about how we experience spaces. It’s a
powerful, essential part of our daily lives and affects how we live,
work, play, and even heal. Comfortable homes, functional
workplaces, beautiful public spaces—that’s interior design at work.
Interior design is more than just aesthetics. It's about finding
creative design solutions for interior environments while supporting
the health, safety and well being of occupants and enhancing their
quality of life.
Following a systematic and coordinated methodology including
research, analysis and integration of knowledge into the creative
process, interior design is a multi-faceted profession whereby the
needs and resources of the client are satisfied to create an interior
space that fullfils the project goals.

4. What’s the Difference Between Interior Architecture ,
Interior Design and Interior Decoration?
In simple and broad terms, interior design is more to do with the
art of the building and interior architecture more concerned with
the science.
Summary:
• Interior architecture is the balancing of the art and science of
designing an interior space taking into account all elements of
the build. However, a designer with training in interior
architecture cannot call themselves as such unless they have the
professional accreditation from an architectural body.
• Interior design is a broad ranging profession taking into account
all aspects of planning and designing interior spaces in the built
environment. The role of any two interior designers can vary
greatly.
• Interior decoration is concerned solely with the decoration or
‘art’ of a space including soft furnishings and colour schemes.

6. Excavations in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt suggest that the earliest
equivalent of furniture consisted of platforms of bricks, which served as
chairs, tables, and beds, no doubt spread with textiles or animal skins.
There is also good reason to think that walls were painted and, in the case
of more important buildings, decorated with mural paintings. Movable
furniture first occurred only in the most important residences, such as
palaces, and in public buildings. Furniture is of considerable antiquity,
though it is known, for the most part, only from wall paintings, sculpture,
and vase paintings.

7. Stone and wood were available, however they were
scarce and expensive. This is why Assyrian
structures are primarily made of mud bricks stacked
upon each other, and then finished by sealing them
with additional mud (similar to how we use plaster
on interior walls). Some of the most famous and
significant Assyrian structures were:
• the Ishtar Gate
• The White Temple at Warka
• The Ziggurat at Ur
• Ashurnasirpal II palace
These palaces were characterized by large spaces,
large quantities of rooms, interior walls that were
painted, and exhibited low-relief carvings in
important rooms. Reliefs were a representation of
the Kingdoms wealth, were dynamic, polychromatic,
and displayed an overall theme of intimidation.
Most importantly, these structures had at least one
room, if not multiple, that faced a loggia to aid in air
circulation in this hot climate.

8. The chronology of Egypt was determined by Dynasties and
Pharaohs. Egypt is separated into three periods:
• The Old Kingdom
The Old Kingdom was the age of the pyramids, and a central
focus of creating monumental structures such as; tombs,
cenotaphs, and temples. Religion was focused on death and
the afterlife.
HISTORY OF INTERIOR DESIGN/ Egypt

9. • The Middle Kingdom
During the Middle Kingdom Pharaohs
transitioned their focus from the
construction of pyramids (seen as a
royal monument) to outfitting and
creating pylon temples. Pylons were
large gates at the entrances of the
temples.
HISTORY OF INTERIOR DESIGN/ Egypt
Their walls were decorated with reliefs and paintings depicting the Pharaohs,
Gods, and Goddesses, while obelisk and large statues of the Pharaoh were
placed on either side of the pylon.

10. • The New Kingdom
Known especially for monumental architecture and statuary honoring the gods
and pharaohs, the New Kingdom, a period of nearly 500 years of political
stability and economic prosperity, also produced an abundance of artistic
masterpieces created for use by nonroyal individuals.

12. Modern is a broad design term
that typically refers to a home
with clean, crisp lines, a simple
colour palette and the use of
materials that can include metal,
glass and steel.
Modern design employs a sense
of simplicity in every element,
including furniture. A word that’s
commonly used to describe
modern style is sleek, and there
is not a lot of clutter or
accessories involved with a
modern style.
1. MODERN
5/29/2019 12
13. Modern and contemporary are two
styles frequently used
interchangeably. Contemporary is
different from modern because it
describes design based on the here
and now.
The primary difference separating
modern and contemporary design
style is that modern is a strict
interpretation of design that started
in the 20th century. Contemporary
on the other hand, is more fluid and
can represent a sense of currency
with less adherence to one
particular style. For example,
contemporary style may include
curving lines, whereas modern
design does not.
2. CONTEMPORARY
5/29/2019 13
14. The minimalist concept is one
that’s popular here in
Australia. It takes notions of
modern design and simplifies
them further.
Colour palettes are neutral
and airy; furnishings are
simple and streamlined, and
nothing is excessive in
accessories or décor.
Minimalism is ultimately
defined by a sense of
functionality and ultra-clean
lines.
3. MINIMALIST
5/29/2019 14
15. Industrial style as the name
implies, draws inspiration
from a warehouse or an urban
loft.
There’s a sense of unfinished
rawness in many of the
elements, and it’s not
uncommon to see exposed
brick, ductwork and wood.
4. INDUSTRIAL
An iconic home with an industrial design theme would be a renovated loft from
a former industrial building.
Think high ceilings, old timber and dangling metal light fixtures with sparse
functional furniture. There may possibly be one or two pieces of abstract art or
photography to add a dash of colour to an otherwise neutral colour scheme
derived from the primary materials of wood and metals.5/29/2019 15
16. Mid-century modern is a
throwback to the design
style of the mid-1900s—
primarily the 1950s and
60s. There’s a retro
nostalgia present in Mid-
Century Modern Design,
and also some elements
of minimalism.
5. MID-CENTURY MODERN
Functionality or “fussy-free” was the main theme for Mid-century design. It
emphasis on pared-down forms, natural or organic shapes such as “egg-
shaped” chair, easy-to-use contemporary designs and simple fabrications. It
easily complements any interior and also helps with seamless transition from
interior to exterior.
5/29/2019 16
17. Scandanavian design pays
homage to the simplicity of
life demonstrated in Nordic
countries. Scandinavian
furniture design often feels
like a work of art, although
it is simple and understated.
6. SCANDINAVIAN
There’s functionality in the furniture along with some interesting lines, many of
which have a sculptural influence.
Other common characteristics include all-white colour palettes and the
incorporation of natural elements like form-pressed wood, bright plastics, and
enameled aluminum, steel and wide plank flooring. If there are pops of colour
it often comes from the use of art, natural fibre throws or furs, or a single piece
of furniture.
Spacious, natural lighting, less accessories and functional furniture
characterizes Scandinavian designs.5/29/2019 17
18. Traditional design style offers
classic details, sumptuous
furnishings, and an abundance of
accessories. It is rooted in
European sensibilities.
Traditional homes often feature
dark, finished wood, rich colour
palettes, and a variety of textures
and curved lines. Furnishings have
elaborate and ornate details and
fabrics, like velvet, silk and
brocade, which may include a
variety of patterns and textures.
There’s depth, layering and
dimensionality within most
traditional designs.
7. TRADITIONAL
5/29/2019 18
19. Transitional is a very popular
style because it borrows
from both traditional and
modern design to facilitate a
space that’s not “too much,”
in terms of one style or
another. There’s a sense of
balance that’s appealing and
unexpected.
8. TRANSITIONAL
A transitional design may incorporate modern materials, such as steel and
glass, and then unite them with plush furnishings.
Transitional design also includes relatively neutral colour palettes, creating a
calming and relaxed space that manages to feel both stylish and sleek, as well
as warm and inviting.
5/29/2019 19
20. Warm, earthy colours are
indicative of a French Country
design style, as are worn and
ornamental wooden furnishing.
The style has an overarching
farmhouse inspiration.
French Country design may
include soft and warm tones of
red, yellow or gold and natural
materials like stone and brick.
French Country design can
include collections of ornate
porcelain dishes and heavy
linens and bed coverings.

21. Bohemian is a popular style for
home design and fashion. It reflects
a carefree lifestyle with little rules,
except to follow your hearts desire.
Bohemian homes may include
vintage furniture and light fixtures,
globally inspired textiles and rugs,
displays of collections, and items
found in widely varied sources
including flea markets and during
one’s travels.
10. BOHEMIAN
It’s not uncommon to spot floor pillows and comfortable seating spaces when
incorporating the bohemian style. This eclectic style can incorporate an ultra-
glam chandelier paired with a well-worn rug and a mid-century chair. Within
the Bohemian style, there’s a laissez-faire attitude where anything goes as long
as you love it.

Botanicals fit perfectly with
bohemian style as plants are
an affordable and easy to

relaxed vibe while adding
dimension to a room. Plants
also do double duty of
purifying air while adding a
pop of color without
interfering too much with the
rest of your design and
confusing the eye. Hanging
plants are also an excellent
bohemian addition in any
bohemian space, and are a
beautiful and fun way to add
interest and depth.

33. Rustic design is drawn from
natural inspiration, using raw
and often unfinished elements
including wood and stone.
Rustic design may incorporate
accessories from the outdoors
with warmth emulating from
the design and architectural
details that may include
features like vaulted ceilings
adorned with wood beams or
reclaimed wood floors.
12. RUSTIC
Many designs now integrate rustic design with more modern furnishings and
accessories. Rustic design is a great way to connect or reconnect with nature’s elements
and benefit from her soothing powers.
5/29/2019 33
34. 1. COLOR:
Natural Color Palette
When referred to a natural
color palette, many people
think of brown, beige, and
cream. However, a natural
color palette also includes
shades of green, blue, and
red. As long as the colors tie
in with the other elements
and lead to a warm and
earthy aesthetic, there are no
limitations.
12. RUSTIC/PRINCIPLES
To help capture the distressed and basic feel of a rustic home, large surfaces such as the
walls, floors, and furnishings are typically left raw and unpainted. If selecting colors
proves to be challenging, white is the safest solution.
5/29/2019 34
36. 2. NATURAL MATERIALS:
Wood
wood is one of the main
natural materials in the
rustic living room,
rustic bedroom or any room
that’s giving a rustic revamp.
Also some reclaimed wood
flooring is the perfect rustic
inspired design. Wood
paneling and beams will also
provide a hint of luxury.

37. 2. NATURAL MATERIALS: Stone
Finally, stone is regularly used to balance
the interior and completing the rustic
design. Exposed walls are typically seen
surrounding fireplaces allowing nature’s
elements — fire, stone and wood — to
unite and beautify the room. Flagstone
flooring is a great look for rustic kitchen
decor and it also looks terrific in a rustic
bathroom. It’s natural and durable and
provides a warm and cozy feel while
boasting practicality and durability.
Stone fireplaces look great for updated
rustic living room ideas.

5/29/2019 37
38. 2. NATURAL MATERIALS:
Metals
Metals are also expected to be
seen in these designs.
Wrought metals may be
incorporated into the space in
various ways depending on
individual’s taste. Pots and
pans tend to be seen hanging
in the kitchen while cast iron
bands are spotted wrapped
around staircase posts.
12. RUSTIC/PRINCIPLES

40. 4. TEXTILE
Rustic homes incorporate sturdy
fabrics that evoke a natural aesthetic.
Different textiles are often placed side-
by-side, leading to a complex but
stylish room. This design is meant to
look effortless, which means the floor
needs nothing more than a weaved
rug or a faux animal throw which is a
good way to instill the bedroom with a
sense of warmth and coziness.
12. RUSTIC/PRINCIPLES
5/29/2019 40
41. 5. PATTERNS
Since most surfaces and objects are kept
simple and unrefined, patterns are
responsible for arousing interest. A rustic
home can be enhanced with a handmade,
patchworked quilt — or at least, one that
looks handmade. In vibrant colors and
various patterns, these quilts do not fail to
support the right look and feel. Hanging
quilts on the wall is an interesting way to
bring down-home comfort to a space.
12. RUSTIC/PRINCIPLES
5/29/2019 41
42. 6. FURNITURE
Rustic furniture is often made from recycled
and reclaimed materials that reinforce the
sense of repurposing. Unlike contemporary
or traditional furniture, a rustic style has no
predictable lines or patterns. Often,
unrefined tree trunks form tables and bed
frames, offering an authentic feel of comfort.
An easy way to soften the coarseness created
by the furniture is to utilize previously
mentioned white shades.
12. RUSTIC/PRINCIPLES

items, which look as if
they’ve been thrown
together in a room at
random, each with a function
and purpose. Mismatched
dining chairs situated around
a well-loved dining table if
often a great look to go for.
Having the room layout
centered around a focal point
(such as a fireplace, TV or
coffee table) will give the
space a purposeful feel and
bring everything together

pastels. Light light fixture and wall hangings
may be ornate and continue the feminine vibe
