Term 2: The Rise of Hitler
Your task: The Slave Trade was a central feature of world wide trade
up until the 19th Century. Until the 19th century, few people thought
there was anything wrong with slavery. Both African rulers and
European traders were happy to trade in slaves. It was a profitable
trade and many people made lots of money out of it. However, at the
end of the 18th century, public opinion began to turn against the slave
trade. In 1787, the Committee for the Abolition of the Slave Trade was
set up. William Wilberforce represented the committee in Parliament.
Local man Thomas Clarkson also played a significant part in helping
the end the slave trade by writing essays and campaigning against it.
The Slave Trade was finally abolished in the British Empire in 1807.
Historians use sources to find out information out about the past and
they are a key feature of studying history, especially at GCSE. Your
task is to analyse sources about the Slave Trade.
