Due to UK age regulations, our short horror sequence would not be suitable for people
younger than 15. Also, in relation to the content and the age of the actors and actresses
in the scenes, the target audience would be 16-35 year olds, as the content would appeal
mostly to those who could identify with the characters. Both males and females would
be targeted for our short horror sequence, as there are very few gender specific scenes
and could be appreciated and enjoyed by all.
We interviewed two media and film students, and they agreed that the short
sequence was entertaining. These students were 18 and 17 respectively,
which fits into the bracket of our target audience further confirming our
target audience of 16-35 year olds is accurate.
Before we made the film, as a group we conducted an online survey which we posted on a
forum. This allowed us to see what things would work when creating our sequence and what
things wouldn’t.
From our survey we gathered that people like
psychological horrors which gave us confidence in
what sub-genre would appeal more effectively. We
also discovered that audiences like to associate
themselves with the main character, which was why
we made sure that we didn't alienate Angus from
the audience, as this would eliminate any emotional
connection towards him. We aimed to target people
who are frequent watchers of horrors, due to their
better understanding of the genre. Our survey
shows that most people watch horror films at least
once a month.
How did you attract/address your audience? How did you attract/address your audience?
We needed our audience to understand Angus as a character, so we had to
make sure he linked as close as possible with our target audience. Firstly we
evaluated our target age group of 16-35. Despite this being a relatively wide
selection of people, we knew that most would be around the same
class/status as another. So through the use of costumes (misé-en-scéne), we
had to make Angus seem like a middle class, working man. This would mean
he was around the same class as the majority of people watching the
sequence.
Angus’ house had to seem relatively basic/ middle class so we chose a
location that fitted, and was not seen as ‘too posh’, otherwise, this
slight difference could have impacted the connection between the
audience and the main character.
Throughout our sequence we
tried to set the mood
appropriate for the scene by
using music tracks which
impacted them emotionally
and allowed them to feel
more tense/ scared. Without
the music the scenes would
have a much smaller effect
on the viewers.
