Smart Energy Management of Photovoltaic and battery storage

  1. 1. Smart Energy Management of Photovoltaic and battery storage Helena Gibert 30 January 2019
  2. 2. NATURGY OVERVIEW We are a leading company vertically integrated in gas and electricity and the largest in Spain and Latin America More than countries 30 Near customers worldwide 18M Headcount employees 15.375 Installed Capacity 15.448 MW
  3. 3. AGENDA FOR TODAY I. Energy Management at flexible PV installations II. Stakeholders at the self-consumption business model III. Monitoring and Evaluation: KPI‘s IV. Viability of the business model
  4. 4. I II III IVIII Energy Management Stakeholders KPI’s Business Model Optimized Flexible Photovoltaic Installations Naturgy has installed a total of 70kWp of photovoltaic at three locations including Lithium Ion batteries to optimize the operation via the IREC Energy Box 2.6kWp and 4.5kWh storage capacity Manufacturer: FRONIUS and BENQ Neighborhood Community 11kWp and 7kWh storage capacity Manufacturer: SMA, REC and BYD Education Facility 58kWp and 54kWh storage capacity Manufacturer: Canadian Solar, Schneider and SAFT Naturgy Headquarter
  5. 5. I II III IVIII Energy Management Stakeholders KPI’s Business Model Optimized Flexible Photovoltaic Installations The Energy Box is a hardware-software integrated solution for the smart and dynamic energy management of a set of energy systems Grid import export Battery operation Local generation Building Loads The automatic management of the installation include the following modules: Machine Learning algorithms to forecast demand; Weather Forecast to obtain renewable generation and; Electricity Prices Forecasts In order to perform an optimal management with the following objectives: 1.overall electricity costs minimization 2.electricity peak-shaving 3.CO2eq emissions minimization
  6. 6. I II III IVIII Energy Management Stakeholders KPI’s Business Model Need of involvement of neighbors community and Landscape Department from project conception The different stakeholders throughout the project value chain should be involved from the early stages of the project conception CLIENT PROSPECTION • Regulatory Body • Building Owners • Facility Managers • Neighborhood communities OFFER ELLABORATION • Contractors • Energy Service Company • Design Engineers • Manufacturers BASIC DESIGN • Design Engineers • Facility or Property Managers • City Landscape Dpt PERMITS & FINAL DESIGN • Landscape Department • Administration • DSO • Safety Coordinator CONSTRUCTION & OPERATION • Contractor • Safety Coordinator • Administration • Energy Service Company Ideally all the permitting and licensing should be applied in parallel once the final design is completed and the tendering of the construction is on-going
  7. 7. I II III IVIII Energy Management Stakeholders KPI’s Business Model Need of involvement of neighbors community and Landscape Department from project conception Photovoltaic Modules Dual Cell Technology NATURGY has carried out a technical analysis of the different manufacturers of modules, inverters and batteries in order to validate them at their self-consumption lab as well as at the final client premises Inverters Hybrid Technology Back contact Bifacial Cell Technology Battery Storage LFP (Iron Phosphate) NCA (Li-Aluminum)
  8. 8. I II III IVIII Energy Management Stakeholders KPI’s Business Model Evaluation of savings come from the self-consumption ratio of the building as well as avoidances of maximum demand penalties and energy arbitrage Energy from the grid Energy from the storage Energy from the PV 37% 44% 63% 70% 76% 73% 77% 78% 67% 54% 41% 38%
  9. 9. I II III IVIII Energy Management Stakeholders KPI’s Business Model Evaluation of emissions avoidance comes from the self- sufficient ratio (%) of the installation as well as the self- consumption pattern The hourly emission factor of the national electricity mix should be compared with the self-consumption load curve of the installation. Renewable and Nuclear Generation (29-01-2019 23:50) Renewable and Nuclear Generation (28-01- 2019 23:50) Grid Power Battery Power Self- consumed Generation
  10. 10. I II III IVIII Energy Management Stakeholders KPI’s Business Model The roll out of photovoltaic installations at urban scale need the maintenance costs to drop significantly and the Municipal Ordinances to promote this usage of the rooftop The business model is based on an energy service contract with the customer
  11. 11. I II III IVIII Energy Management Stakeholders KPI’s Business Model The New Royal Decree for self-consumption has left behind the taxes that decreased economic viability of such projects and acknowledge the collective self-consumption Collective Self-consumption optimizes the PV load curve since the loads of dwellings and the commercial building on the basement are complementary. Profitability of projects increases significantly.
