2. If you’ve been keeping up with the latest developments in the
solar industry, then there’s no doubt you’ve seen community
solar dominating the headlines. Every month there have been
announcements for new community solar laws and projects
activating all over the country. It’s the fastest growing segment
of the solar market, and currently has active programs in 19
states.
With this entire buzz, could it be that this is the year of
community solar? It’s indeed looking like the neighborhood-
friendly solar concept is making its big breakthrough in 2019.
Below, we take a look at some of the most recent news that is
proving community solar’s growing popularity.
California Fights for Community Programs
This May, the California Alliance for Community Energy urged
the government to defend community choice energy programs
against the Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). Their petition
comes in the form of a letter featuring signatures from
representatives of 50 California organizations.
This push against the CPUC is vital for the state’s community
programs to continue growing and providing citizens with
alternatives to standard utilities.
3. Minnesota Sees Big Benefits from Community Solar
Minnesota is the country’s biggest proponent of community
solar, producing enough energy to power 100,000 residences.
With 208 projects currently active, it is responsible for more
than ⅓ of all the nation’s community solar projects.
The Institute for Local Self Reliance, Vote Solar and the
Minnesota Solar Energy Industry Association recently teamed
up to issue a report on the state’s benefits from community
solar. It found that over 14,000 MN customers signed up for
community solar, that CS has created over 4,000 jobs, and that
CS projects will provide $3 million+ in tax revenue.
Minnesota’s House of Representatives recently approved HF
2208, a proposal that is set to expand CS and customer access
throughout the state.
4. Maryland Extends Pilot of Community Solar Program
The state just passed a bill that will extend its community solar
pilot program through 2022. The pilot has been successful, and
extension is intended to serve as a period during which the
government can develop a concrete plan for how the program
will become a long-term institution.
The bill not only extends the pilot’s lifespan, it also increases
the program’s coverage: the cap on generating capacity per
system has been raised, as has the permitted number of
subscribers per project.
