Veteran 'Downtown Radio' music producer Stephen Nelson died in the Royal
Victoria Hospital, Belfast on 18 March 2005, the victim of a vicious assault
outside a local nightclub. Six months ago, 55-year old Nelson was attacked
and kicked in the head by a gang of ten men outside the Chimney Corner hotel
nightclub where he organised discos. Police believe that the assailants had
attended the venue earlier in the evening but know of no motive for the attack.
Left for dead, Nelson was rushed to hospital where he fell into a coma until his
death last week.
Known as 'Rastus' to his colleagues, Nelson joined Downtown Radio soon
after its launch, producing and engineering commercials, jingles and music in
the station’s production studio. He recorded many of Ulster’s most popular
bands, including Stiff Little Fingers, the Bank Robbers and the Undertones,
including their hit single 'Teenage Kicks'. Nelson left Downtown in the late
1990s to work as entertainments manager at the Chimney Corner. Police have
launched a murder enquiry. Nelson was single and is survived by a brother
who lives in London and a sister in Belfast.
