Nebraska’s Chautauqua combines oratory
and lectures with literary readings and musical entertainment.
With origins in the late 19th century, these touring groups
would entertain and inform people living on the plains about
political and cultural happenings. The name comes from
a resort community in New York State where, in 1875, a
summer program of lectures, sermons and music attracted
such enthusiastic audiences that within a few years similar
programs sprang into existence for the public in other parts of
the country. Today, Chautauqua upholds the tradition of offering
entertainment, education and community-based heritage.
Attendees gather under the big tent and enjoy scholars-in-
residence presenting first-person portrayals of some of our most
important historical figures along with a variety of activities for
all ages.
Each evening, humorist Mark Twain moderates one of five
presentations of these historical figures: Union General and
railroad builder Grenville Dodge, author Willa Cather, Ponca
Chief Standing Bear, homesteader and inventor George
Washington Carver, and homesteader and author Laura Ingalls
Wilder.
Each Chautauquan gives a first-person presentation as his or
her historical character, then answers questions. Workshops
for children and adults along with other activities are held
throughout the Chautauqua week.
Free Land Chautauqua allows the audience to experience and
explore the impact of landmark legislation through the historical
lens of homesteading, migration and displacement on the
Great Plains. The Homestead Act, the Morrill Act and the Pacific
Railway Act all were passed within six weeks of each other
in 1862 and set into motion sweeping changes for the Great
Plains region and the American West. As part of the Chautauqua
residency, six scholars explore the lasting impact of the 1862
legislation and how those events affect Americans today.
Evening programs will be held in the Chautauqua tent located in
Railroad Town at Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer. In case
of inclement weather, tent programs will be held at Grand Island
Northwest High School. Adult and youth workshops will be held
at the Grand Island Public Library.

Nebraska State Fair
Aug 23 through Sept 2 • Fonner Park in Grand Island
StateFair.org
With nearly 1 million visitors since relocating to Grand
Island in 2010, the Nebraska State Fair is only getting
better. Your family will have endless hours of fair fun on
the midway; a new carnival ranked third in the nation is
coming to town for the 144th edition of the Fair.
Concert goers can expect a wide variety of entertainment
that is sure to please with country, classic country,
classic rock and Christian performers hitting the stage
for the entertainment series. Youth from across the
state converge on the State Fair to show livestock and
domestics at our nationally renowned livestock and
exhibition facilities. Parents will enjoy the countless
learning opportunities for their children while visiting the
Milking Parlor, Birthing Pavilion and the Avenue of Breeds
in each barn.
Tractors, combines and livestock equipment abound in
the Ag Marketplace. It provides a unique opportunity for
farmers and ranchers to see all the latest in agricultural
machinery and technology.
And a fair wouldn’t be a fair without all the fantastic fair
foods. Enjoy all your favorites from corn dogs, hamburgers
and funnel cakes to the new and tasty moink balls and
alligator-on-a-stick. No matter the time of day, you’re sure
to find just the right fair food to satisfy your hunger.
Don’t forget to download the free Nebraska State Fair
app. Plan out your day, find your favorite fair food and
find your car at the end of the day — all in the palm of
your hand with your Android or iPhone. Get all the details
at StateFair.org and be sure to look up the state fair on
Facebook and Twitter.
Visit StateFair.org today to check the daily schedule
and plan your family’s fair adventure!
The concert line-up is
a can’t miss for the
2013 Nebraska State
Fair. There’s sure to
be some unforgettable
performances this year
from the wide variety of
performers.
Chelsey Jungck, Events
Entertainment Director
Strolling through the
Exhibition Building has
always been one of my
favorite things to do at
the Fair. There’s so many
unique products that I had
no idea even existed.
Valerie Brewer, Events
Entertainment Assistant
The livestock shows are a
can’t miss. Having my kids
grow up exhibiting at the
state fair, I know just how
competitive and excellent
the shows can be.
Sandy Spiehs, Livestock
Assistant
I can’t wait for the fair
food! New this year we
have alligator-on-a-stick
and moink balls that I can’t
wait to try.

Vineyards in Nebraska
Grapevines love Nebraska soil.
They like rolling hills with water
far below, but within reach, and
brisk winds to keep unwanted
intruders away. These are all the
ingredients for growing grapes
that make award-winning wine.
This is Nebraska, and it’s wine
country.
Many French-American hybrids
or American varietals are
grown here. Some of these
winter-hardy grapes include
Edelweiss, LaCross, St. Croix
and Vignoles.

Nebraska. World War II,
Prohibition and the Great
Depression uprooted the
industry until a few vision-
aries planted grapes again
in the 1980s. For more
