5. State of Play – Australia’s 5G Opportunity.
Australia is a world leader
in 5G, currently ranked
third in global rankings*,
with over 4000
5G base stations deployed
the end of 2021

Trials of 5G technology
and support for
innovation are
being supported by the
Australian Government’s
5G Innovation Initiative
There are significant economic
benefits to be gained from the
adoption of 5G across industry,
including innovation, jobs,
productivity, global collaboration
& competitiveness
But our telecommunications industry cannot do it alone.
Other industry sectors can – and should – play a leading role in adopting this technology to
ensure the potential that has been created is realised and capitalised upon.

Enhance Understanding
To support the increased adoption of 5G technology by Australian industry and capitalise on the world-leading
capacity and potential established by the telecommunications sector, AMTA is strategically targeting key industry
verticals that are well placed to lead on uptake and drive use cases which will inspire others to engage.
Drive Advocacy Build Engagement
Reinforce the unique qualities
of 5G to support enhanced
innovation, productivity and
connectedness amongst new
and diverse strategic
audiences
Democratise advocacy for the
value and potential of 5G to
supercharge innovation across
multiple sectors, adding new
voices to those of our industry
Proactively facilitate
engagement between
AMTA members, key
influencers and decision
makers in strategic industry
verticals and government

7. 5G – The Future is Ours
5G 5 Ways – starting a conversation with industry.

AMTA identified four key industry verticals – Smart Cities,Agriculture, Health andTransport & Logistics –
that have the potential to enable a new way of bringing to life the positive impact of 5G and demonstrate
to consumers and industry just how wide-reaching the benefits of 5G will be.
Smart Cities
• Energy efficiency
• Personal and home
applications
• Connected cameras
• Drones
• Autonomous farm
equipment
• Livestock monitoring
& feeding
Agriculture
• Robotic surgery
• Remote patient monitoring
and procedures
• Emergency response
(aeromedical deliveries)
Health
• Automated vehicles
and vehicle tracking
• VR/AR support
• Connected robots

9. The next step: 5G Unleashed.
The report surveys 400 business
leaders across four key sectors:
Smart

Smart cities/
transport
Health Agriculture
• Having initiated the conversation with key
verticals to wake them up to the potential of
5G, the next step is to take a deeper look into
the factors that drive, or limit, uptake.
• AMTA has commissioned Deloitte Access
Economics to conduct a study on the economic
benefits of 5G for Australia, of a
faster rollout and more widespread adoption
of 5G and the policy and regulatory principles
required to support this.
• The report – 5G Unleashed – will be launched
next week.

12. In summary – three key takeaways.

The telco sector has
invested billions to get
here but now industries
which will benefit must
now pick up the baton
too.
Australia’s mobile
telecommunications
industry will continue to
focus on both demand
and supply issues while
fostering greater adoption.
Australia is at an
inflection point with
5G rollout where the
focus needs to turn
to adoption.

This approach has underpinned a number of key pieces of work I will now share with you, and enabled us to start new conversations beyond the telecommunications industry that will be crucial to enabling and encouraging greater uptake and utilisation of 5G by industry and, ultimately, the ability to realise the potential we have created.
Speaking notes (draft):
About 18 months ago, AMTA identified the need to drive greater recognition of the benefits of 5G to a broader audience. In mid-2021 we launched our 5G 5 Ways series to communicate the benefits of 5G technology across four industry sectors: Smart Cities, Agriculture, Health, and Transport and Logistics – to highlight the positive impact 5G will have in Australia.

This content alongside a broad range of editorial and op eds was strategically targeted at members and senior decision makers within these industry vertcials to start the conversation around the potential of 5G
