Goal4 overview 2011 12_3
1. Overview
The mission of Goal4.org is to reduce infant and child mortality. Our name comes from the fourth United
Nations Millennium Development Goal to reduce under-five mortality by two thirds by the year 2015.
Goal4’s approach uses information technology to build a connected, educated, engaged, and supplied
community – from medical professionals to mothers – that will work together to target the biggest
killers of children under five. The approach is made up of three strategies.
Empowerment via access to knowledge // We use IT to make critical knowledge accessible to
those who need it when they need it. Access to knowledge includes medical and technical
training, online reference resources, health information management systems, and both online
and offline community building across three groups – families, community health workers, and
health practitioners and professionals.
Empowerment via access to supplies // We help local health practitioners get the supplies and
services they need to prevent, diagnose and treat the key causes of under-five death.
Health marketing and communications // We conduct campaigns that target the health
practitioner community and the public. The campaigns are aimed at building awareness,
educating, and engaging each audience to use the available health resources and services.
Goal4’s mission is being achieved through six programs:
Electronic Medical Records System & Digital Literacy Training
Connected Community Health Workers
Health Facilities: Support and Equip
Public Sanitation
Online Health Portal
Telemedicine and Remote Consultation and Diagnostics
