  1. Hey everyone, welcome to the Lightning talk on "How HipChat powers the HipChat team."\n
  2. My name is Pete Curley\n\nI'm one of the co-founders of HipChat, and I have the distinction of being the "non-engineer". So that means I do the UX, Design, Clerical, some light typing…that kind of thing.\n\nFor those of you that didn't see Mike's keynote speech, I'll give you the quick rundown about HipChat. HipChat is a group chat and IM service for companies and teams. We were acquired by Atlassian 3 months ago, and we're super excited to be a part of Atlassian and to be here at our first Summit. I’m not going to give you the whole sales pitch, but you can learn more at HipChat.com\n\n\n
  3. So what is this talk about? We ran our business in a very nontraditional way, and we think that's with a big part how a company with 4 employees could get thousands of customers in just 2 years. A lot of that is thanks to HipChat.\n\nI always hate when companies show you fake company XYZ making widgets or some stupid stuff like that so I'm going to show you how we used HipChat to run HipChat. I know that's a little HIPCHATCEPTION going on. Hopefully some of what we did, will help your team work better, get more done, and also have a lot more fun while you’re doing it.\n

  11. We used HipChat for everything, but I’m going to show you the 3 areas that will hopefully mirror aspects of the businesses you work in.\n\n
  12. - Let’s start with where most projects begin, the design.\n\n
  13. - I do most of my designs in Photoshop, this is a new concept for a homepage I’m currently working on. So you’re getting a sneak peak.\n- HipChat is amazing for sharing images and working back and forth with coworkers, but sharing files can be a real pain.\n- Do you save them and email them? Put them in DropBox? are the right people seeing them?\n- I’ll show a few of the ways to share a file in HipChat\n- The first way here I’m going to use Mac’s built in screenshot tool to save the image of this to share in our design room and get some feedback.\n\n\nCouple ways to share files\n- Drag image in\n- Choose the file\n- Or my favorite, pasting from the clipboard. I can copy any image and paste it directly into the room and it’ll take care of the rest. This even works with individual layers from photoshop.\n\nSo not only do you get these cool image previews, each room has a files & links sidebar on the side to go through old images and links. HipChat also saves all the file and chat history so you don’t have to worry about losing anything.\n\nMarketing - share screenshots, blog posts\n
  14. - If you take screenshots a lot, if you’re into marketing, PR, or anything like that you’re going to live this.\n- I’m going to use the screenshot tool to copy the image to my clipboard, it didn’t generate another file.\n- HipChat let’s me paste this directly into the messaage box, it turns it into a file and shares it with everyone. A little easier than saving the file and emailing it around to people huh?\n\n
  15. And the next way is my personal favorite. You can actually drag layers directly from Photoshop or Fireworks or pretty much anywhere directly into HipChat. GIve them a name and they’re off.\n
  16. - So not only do you get these cool image previews, each room also has a files and links sidebar where you can view every image that’s been shared and really quickly view a thumbnail.\n\nThen when you’ve found one you like, you can view the full version.\n
  17. - Now that the team knows what’s being built, let’s move on to development.\n\n

This is our development room\n- There’s huge value in having the whole team able to chat with what’s going on, can’t underemphasis the value of having your team being together and seeing what’s going on in real time.\n- But the coolest thing would have to be our integrations.\n- We see these cool little messages whenever someone:\n- Checked in code\n- Pushed a new build\n- When Chris pushed a new version of the client or mobile app\n- When someone started paying for HipChat\n- When we got a new support ticket on uservoice\n\nIf something was going wrong or you need someone’s attention, you can @mention them which will send them an email, SMS, or mobile push through a native app with your message (Just like in JIRA and Confluence)\n\n\n\n
