HIGHLIGHTS :
CEO FORUM-FEBRUARY 13,2012
Vol. : 3 January - March, 2012Issue : 4
NewsletterNewsletter
Dear Member,
With the onset of 2012 we further move a
year ahead to meet our commitment to
the CSR principles of UN Global
Compact. It is with the sustained and ever
increasing efforts and commitment from
our members that we have been able to hold successfully the
India CEO Forum on Business and Human Rights, roundtable
on Design and Implement Effective Risk Assessment
Mechanisms and the Seventh National Convention on
'Corporate Perspective on Sustainable Development: Rio+20
and Beyond'.
With the global Submit Rio+20 round the corner, the objective
will be to hammer out an agreed framework that is radical,
forward - looking and legally binding so that clear guidance and
directives are available for various actors to put together an
ensemble cast and act on a coordinated agenda that would
make a perceptible difference in addressing the priority
towards Livelihood Sustainability against Lifestyle
Sustainability.
Sustainability,as discussed at various forums- the 7th National
Convention, monthly meetings with the members of Global
Compact Network and the upcoming Sustainability Submit
envisions at developing a scenario in future where corporate
entities can and will assume leadership positions in addressing
sustainability issues. However as economic distress deepens
or recovery stagnates, consumers will shy away from
paying a premium on goods and services supporting
sustainability measures that impose an additive cost to the
consumer.
Thus it is important that a national mandate emerges through
regulatory frameworks in terms of access to natural resources
and ability to leverage them for seeking energy security for the
growth aspirations of those from the lowest strata of the
society. Enforcement of the regulations should be more
stringent with penalties for transgression. Multi-national
corporations must conform with local standards in host
countries rather than applying stringent international
standards across geographies, Internationally acceptable
standards for uniform applicability across sovereign Nations
irrespective of their economic development level appear
unlikely.
This prosaic scenario that balances idealism with practicality
is likely to operate for at least the next decade, thereby
defining a typical 'Indian approach' towards corporate
sustainability.
President's Desk
We must continue and even intensify our advocacy and
prescriptive efforts in engaging with our National leaders to
conclude a universally acceptable agreement at the Rio + 20
conference and explore unique collaborative opportunities
and partnerships amongst business value chains that create
win - win solutions for all in promoting the common agenda of
sustainable development.
On behalf of the UN Global Compact and Global Compact
Network India I invite you to join for the upcoming Rio+20
United Nations Conference on Corporate Sustainability
Forum in the month of June.
With best wishes,
SudhirVasudeva
President GCN-India

Global Compact Network India Newsletter Jan - March 2012

  • 1. Chaired by Shri NR Narayana Murthy, the CEO's meet's aim was to build stronger industry commitment and practices regarding respect for human rights, and launch the India CEO Forum on Business and Human Rights. On the morning of February 13th 2012 the Global Compact Network India with 30 Indian CEO's and other senior business leaders of private companies and PSU's convened to discuss the matter of respect for human rights by the Indian corporate sector. Issues pertaining to Global and national policy developments and Good practices and challenges in India and around the world regarding imple- mentation of respect for human rights were discussed. They decided to regularly discuss the progress of the companies regarding Human rights and formed the CEO Forum on Business and Human Rights. HIGHLIGHTS : CEO FORUM-FEBRUARY 13,2012 Vol. : 3 January - March, 2012Issue : 4 NewsletterNewsletter Dear Member, With the onset of 2012 we further move a year ahead to meet our commitment to the CSR principles of UN Global Compact. It is with the sustained and ever increasing efforts and commitment from our members that we have been able to hold successfully the India CEO Forum on Business and Human Rights, roundtable on Design and Implement Effective Risk Assessment Mechanisms and the Seventh National Convention on 'Corporate Perspective on Sustainable Development: Rio+20 and Beyond'. With the global Submit Rio+20 round the corner, the objective will be to hammer out an agreed framework that is radical, forward - looking and legally binding so that clear guidance and directives are available for various actors to put together an ensemble cast and act on a coordinated agenda that would make a perceptible difference in addressing the priority towards Livelihood Sustainability against Lifestyle Sustainability. Sustainability,as discussed at various forums- the 7th National Convention, monthly meetings with the members of Global Compact Network and the upcoming Sustainability Submit envisions at developing a scenario in future where corporate entities can and will assume leadership positions in addressing sustainability issues. However as economic distress deepens or recovery stagnates, consumers will shy away from paying a premium on goods and services supporting sustainability measures that impose an additive cost to the consumer. Thus it is important that a national mandate emerges through regulatory frameworks in terms of access to natural resources and ability to leverage them for seeking energy security for the growth aspirations of those from the lowest strata of the society. Enforcement of the regulations should be more stringent with penalties for transgression. Multi-national corporations must conform with local standards in host countries rather than applying stringent international standards across geographies, Internationally acceptable standards for uniform applicability across sovereign Nations irrespective of their economic development level appear unlikely. This prosaic scenario that balances idealism with practicality is likely to operate for at least the next decade, thereby defining a typical 'Indian approach' towards corporate sustainability. President's Desk We must continue and even intensify our advocacy and prescriptive efforts in engaging with our National leaders to conclude a universally acceptable agreement at the Rio + 20 conference and explore unique collaborative opportunities and partnerships amongst business value chains that create win - win solutions for all in promoting the common agenda of sustainable development. On behalf of the UN Global Compact and Global Compact Network India I invite you to join for the upcoming Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Corporate Sustainability Forum in the month of June. With best wishes, SudhirVasudeva President GCN-India
