Climate change is one of the greatest threats facing the planet and its negative impacts are more severely felt by poor people and poor countries. As the earth warms, many developing countries experience the greatest climatic changes and economic losses from natural disasters average 13.4% of GDP. By 2020, it is estimated that climate change will increase the proportion of the environmental poor from 53% to 70% and decrease the proportion of vulnerable poor from 85% to 62%. Climate change causes more poverty in the world, particularly in developing countries, because the poor have a high dependence on natural resources and limited capacity to cope with climate variability.
