Why did you choose the place mentioned above ?
I have lots of friends who have travelled here and done many of the activities listed above
I particularly want to see the Great Barrier Reef, Frazer Island and the Whit Sundays. My
best friend is about to emigrate there also. The vast scale of all that is available. Friend
lives in Squamish I have been lucky enough to travel to many countries in the world. I
have identified a short list of 'absentees' from my list, and hopefully will remain fit enough to
get to them in time! Wat u on bout m8?! I fite u anytim m8. Have always wanted to visit
Australia since completing a unit on it at University! I would also like to visit many of the
adventurous landscapes in the country and try some of the ones I haven't done in more
exotic locations! Would love to visit South America; I like the politics of Bolivia; has
rainforest. they have an amazing zip wire course through the tropical rainforest. They are
some of the longest zip wires in the world passing waterfalls and you go from one wire to the
next wire Varied landscapes. because I've never been there and it has suitable

environments to do loads of exciting activities Spectacular national parks The range of
locations and opportunities, the attitude of the population Always wanted to visit there.
Life ambition to see Northern Lights. Beautiful scenery and options to do all of the above
activities! I have recently been rafting a couple of times along the White Nile (I was living
in Rwanda, so it wasn't too far away!). I have seen images of people doing this along the
Zambezi and I currently have a friend who is travelling through Zimbabwe and has been on a
5 day canoe safari which includes some rapid rafting. It's so much fun a real sense of
danger and fear, but at the same time there are many safety precautions and qualified staff
for you to feel comfortable about doing it. I am very jealous of her and her travels and now I
want to go. Because it's stunning, I've never been to the Southern Hemisphere and I have
good friends there. I always thing that New Zealanders have a terrific sense of adventure!
To see more of the country and a different side to it. Has amazing scenery is know for
adventurous holidays Always wanted to visit. Has such a diverse range of landscapes.
Beautiful landscape, mixed with lots of adventure! been to places like NZ, Sweden, USA,
aswell TZ has a wide variety of challenging landscapes Lots of opportunities for activity,
plus landscape is suitable. I love the wild look of the scenery you always see on TV
adverts and when it is used for films The variety of locations and the quality of the
locations. Driving distance and family live there. The variety of terrain and temperate
climate Always wanted to visit due to the amazing landscapes from Lord of the Rings and
from what friends who have visited have said. It has just about everything that you could
hope for in terms of adventure landscapes, oceans, mountains, rivers, beaches, forests etc.
It looks like an amazing country with beautiful mountains and glaciers. I have always
wanted to go there as a geographer there would be so much to see Because of the
wilderness of Patagonia where you can ski, trek and horse ride. Never visited known for
it's adventure and think the scenery would be fantastic and very different I'd like to visit
Alaska (USA) because it has stunning glacial and coastal scenery. It also has one of the
world's highest zip lines at Icy Strait Point. Apart from that, Alaska has so many adventures
on offer hiking, mountaineering, glacier flights and hikes, kayaking around glaciers, remote
camping, etc. Scenery e.g. Lord of Rings films. For the views and terrain. there are
beautiful places for rock climbing and I've never been to Australia, it's my dream that will
probably never come true (I'm too far from this country and it's too expensive). Amazing
fjord landscapes Glaciers High mountains New experience, fiancé's brother lives over
there I have always wanted to visit Africa and combining Serengeti Plains with climbing
Mt Kilimanjaro would make for a lifechanging trip! Best waves, warm sea different
culture Cheap and exciting! Lots of mountains on both the north and south island. Lots
of other outdoor activities to take part in. Exotic location and probably a 'once in a life
time opportunity' so would make the most of having adventures It is famous for the
incredible waterfalls and lots of adrenaline sports such as white water rafting and bungee
jumping. Fantastic landscape, relatives live there as well, range of sports on offer The
landscape looks breathtaking whenever I see it in pictures or films and I have friends who
have been and loved it. Stunning scenery. Lots of wide, open space. As it has a great
reputation for adventure activities.

Why did you choose the place mentioned above ?
Family members live nearby on Anglesey V. Warm. Such a variety of landscapes and
therefore variety of outdoor activities available An amazing landscape that offers both
winter and summer sporting activities. Whether you are skiing downhill at speed in January
or mountain biking down the same piste in August (without the snow!), the Pyrenees are a
bit of a hidden gem. The Buttermilk boulders, perfect Cascades scenery, desert hot
springs and Mammoth and Yosemite just up the road It's was a beautiful landscape which
I could have explored more When I visited here, I had a young baby so was unable to do
some of the awesome adventure activities that it is well known for. I have yet to do a
bungee but have always said that when I do it will be in Queenstown. It has lots of
adventure activities such as bungee jumping, skydiving, white water rafting and many
others. The scenery is also spectacular. Caved in China in 1988 in a closed area of
Guizhou province. Fantastic experience. Astonishing country the size of a continent.
Beautiful scenery, great resources and areas for skiing. Because of the multitude of
different activities you can do there, particularly in the mountains. Didn't have enough
time to explore when last there amazing landscapes especially in Patagonia, where you
can do a wide range of activities Close to where I live but also a super location where so
much stuff can be done. so much variety, choice of landscape, cost, safe Huge

great adventurous things with arguably the most amazing views and landscapes that are the
best in the UK Amazing nature, beautiful landscapes, unforgettable experiences and there
I made my first attempt in mountaineering ascending Mt Elbrus from the north after 6 days
of rough trekking. Unforgettable. Beautiful landscapes that always inspire to get out,
explore and have fun. I have happy memories of spending Christmas in Victoria Falls,
and the whitewater rafting trip on the Zambezi (although climbing back out of the gorge at
the end was very difficult!) Been there loads while growing up. There is always
something new around each corner! Great mountain biking. Also a really interesting
country to visit, friendly people, easy to escape the tourist traps. A place I would like to
go back to but I haven't yet done the 'adventurous thing' I want to there. I would like to go
white water rafting on the Colorado River. The variety of locations and the quality of the
locations. It has the most spectacular scenery I have actually seen and the scale of the
country is awesome huge contrasts as you travel across and you see bears at the side of
the road! We had a great time, and there were things that I didn't get to do! Great
scenery and waves Beautiful place, great attitude to life, amazing food Because I really
liked the people and the way of life The rock formations are fantastic I went on my first

adventure holiday to Snowdonia when I was in year 6 (although we called it Junior 4 in those
days!) and I absolutely loved it. We did climbing, abseiling, gorgewalking and caving. I had
so much fun that it still remains one of my all time favourite holidays. Not too far from
home. Stunning mountain scenery. Lots of things to do. Easy to hire equipment. I've been
caving in East Malaysia (around Kuching) and really enjoyed it, particularly wet caving.
There is a lot more I would like to do in this area, including more wet caving, jungle treks
and scubadiving. Again, it had amazing scenery Enjoyable place to take the family to
do the coastal walk thing with ropes I loved the adventurous experiences I had there, it
has a great climate and wonderful wildlife and fantastic people. There is so much more of
the place that I would like to discover. It is beautiful Amazing, consistent surf and
wonderful people. Beautiful scenery and well set up for adventure holidays Visited on

Glacier hiking was one of the most invigorating activities that I have ever done. To think
that you are walking on frozen water that has been stored in a glacier for thousands of years
makes you feel pretty small in comparison to nature. Climbing in Spain was amazing. I'd
go back and do it all over again, fab mountains and great views. Huge variety of
landscapes to enjoy. Favourite country, affordable, variety of climates, great food,
family.

Great food, beautiful countryside, relaxed atmosphere, not too crowded, plenty of variety of
activities to do Variety of landscape Somewhere a little different and obscure the less
well trodden path Somewhere that excites with the anticipation South America Such an
amazing continent with such varied Geography from its people to landscapes to wildlife! The
beaches, food and drink are also a big pulling point! Mountainous landscape with lots of
adventurous activities to enjoy, local food to dine on and warm sunny summers. A ranch
in the American countryside where the weather is nice and warm, and there are mountains
surrounding you. Nice home cooked food and BBQ. The main attraction would be working on
the ranch and getting involved with the cowboy lifestyle. Coast / river; hilly, range of local
foods, cafes,bistros, hire equipment possibilities, things for different members of. My

wildlife. Spectacular scenery, with mountains/hills but also some coastline to visit, and a
nearby city to explore. It should be warm and sunny but not too hot that it makes exploring
unpleasant. Good food and drink should be plentiful I love Mediterranean style food.
Landscapes, culture, food, interesting people and architecture. good beaches. It is
definitely not a hot place, with some camping sites or even with host families (when you can
rent a room/house from the locals). There is an ocean nearby the village (or whatever the
place it is, just not a city), forest, mountains. Attractions are mostly natural. Food is local,
hearty and in big portions ))) And there is a sports gear shop. Mix of landscapes,
wilderness, activities, not to many nasty creepy crawlies etc don't mind the weather being
wet as long as its not too wet so you can't do activities Places such as NZ or Sweden

Vast landscape, small towns, friendly people, rocks of all descriptions My ideal holiday
destination is difficult sorry on one hand it would be the Seychelles, beaches, sunshine
different culture but then also San Francisco and the Californian coast as would Moscow
all for different reasons but mostly because they are all different. Hiking in the Andes.
Beautiful landscapes, exciting weather, great food, just the whole experience would be
wonderful. Sunny! Good food Nice if it's cheap Preferably LEDC Colourful Varied
landscape beach and mountains, towns and countryside. Happy just being outside (typical
Geographer!) My ideal holiday destination is somewhere with alpine and glacial scenery.
Think: Tasmania (Australia), New Zealand's South Island, Chamonix in France, Switzerland,
the Canadian Rockies, Patagonia in Chile, etc. I like clear, cool weather. Given the choice, I
tend to balance natural and cultural experiences where possible but will normally err on the
side of more natural experiences, where I can get away from people, hike and enjoy
spectacular scenery. I love historical locations and I'm slightly obsessed with UNESCO
World Heritage Sites. I love places where I can get around and see amazing landscapes
in different directions. I adored driving through the highlands of Scotland because around
every turn there seemed to be another amazing view! My ideal holiday destination would
have a large variety of activities on offer and be set in beautiful surroundings. Ideally, it
would have easy access to the coast and a mountainous to allow for activities like scuba
diving and walking. Visiting various locations on a cruise ship so I get to experience as
many different places as possible. Variety is good for example, mountains plus rivers
plus sea. I went to Corsica last year and loved the variety, from rugged mountain paths to
swimming in river gorges, in hot weather. Exciting scenery, different culture, interesting
food, great waves Must have easy access, but not overwhelmed with people. Cost is
important. The experience is everything ... So require good value for money. Climate /
weather is not too important ... Landscape and environment is everything. Exploring
somewhere I have never been before. Having a guide who is really knowledgable about the
location and responsive to my needs and interests. Being able to research the destination in
advance. Options for 'authentic' experiences including food, culture etc. BUT with the
possibility of an escape for home comforts and familiar things. I enjoy citybased breaks

so I can experience art, architecture and culture. I like going to see live music or theatre
whilst I am away. If the city is near a coast then I enjoy spending time there too. Hot
weather is always a bonus but not the most important thing. No prawns A mixture of
landscapes coast which I love and mountains nearby for a change of activity. Warm
weather, I am definitely a summer boy! Food doesnt weigh into my decisions, I am happy to
eat what I am used to or to try new things. A mixture of attractions is best for me some
relaxing time but definitely some adventure, otherwise, why be there??? Somewhere with
unique views whether that be ice capped mountains or coral reefs. Ideally doing some sort
of extreme activity or sport. Weather doesn't matter but food certaibly does!! Malaysia
because it is hot and sunny all year and I love the food and the people Somewhere
interesting to look at (it could be interesting for it's thousands of hills, or tall snowcapped
peaks, or flat salt plains, or endless sand dunes perhaps just a little different to a builtup
environment). Weather should be not too hot and not too cold (although I am happy at either
extreme if dressed appropriately) maybe between 25 and 28 degrees (very specific, eh?!).
Food is of some importance as long as it is tasty and filling. Cold drinks are always good
and somewhere nice to sit and drink them. A comfortable/cosy bed for a good nights sleep
(could be in a tent or in the open or in a hotel but should be clean!), a shower to keep
clean. Good people to share my holiday with and to commune with I like holidays that
make me feel part of something bigger than just my own little adventure. Beautiful
landscapes with mountains or rugged cliff tops and coves at the coast. Plenty of places to
explore away from the 'hoards' and that feel like you've had to work hard to discover them
summits of mountains and hidden coves. Locally produced food, homemade cakes and
local coffee shops in villages. Dry weather, preferably with sunshine. Attractions that reflect
the local area, eg cycle tracks and trails through forests, adventure playgrounds made out of
local materials, farms, watersports, rock pool hunting etc Beautiful landscapes, learn
about different cultures, hot & sunny! Somewhere mountainous but near to the sea. In
winter, you could be in the mountains, but in the summer, you could relax on the beach with
a good book (or Kindle!) A wide variety of good local food available, lacking big hotel
developments. Beach, warm, sunny, small town, tourist attractions near by, not too busy
but not empty Warm, coastal or mountain with cultural and historical sites. Shopping
opportunities are also of interest to me. Umum Tropical climate, white sand, warm
crystal clear sea, excellent snorkeling, close to town or good public transport to explore the
culture and sample the local food. Good weather, interesting local culture, location
specific food including wierdness! Variety of landscapes preferably including mountains and
coasts. South America for the history, language, variety of life, politics, food and weather.
Oh, and the landscape and natural features can be astonishing. somewhere they don't
speak English, i generally prefer European Cities where you can eat some nice food, hit the
beach, go see some art, near some mountains where you can find a gorge and go swimming
in the river and climb up the rocks
Optional question: How do you think tourism change an area, as it grows
popular ?
Employment usually seasonal, money into the area, business fro shops, hotels,
restaurants. Local services may be overrun with tourists, locals are not happy, extra costs

providing services for tourism Sometimes you struggle to find the 'real' city/town/area in
the midst of all the packaged 'for tourists' experiences. However, tourism brings jobs and an
economic boost. Good jobs, investment, infrastructure. Bad litter, cultural
homogenisation, low paid seasonal jobs For sure Brings jobs and some money to the
area; brings environmental negatives like litter and unsightly car parks too. There are
always costs and benefits. Employment opportunities can really benefit whole families in
less developed countries, but many profits made immediately leave the host country.
Environmental impact is often not given sufficient consideration as a country strives to
generate foreign income. Upward trend in all inclusive package deals means local area
receives less benefit. Increase in traffic key negative. Positive economic opportunities
Tourism destroys local habitats and natural beauties, whatever positive changes it brings I
believe it is bad, especially mass tourism. Can bring access to those who fear the
unknown but often makes it less 'other worldly', part of the reason for travelling. In a word,
badly! Tourism appears to be rarely sustainable and always ruins the country. Higher prices,
being ripped off and corruption generally comes with the development. Some of the
positives include improvements to infrastructure, the growth of employment, economic
diversification, increased spending and the protection of cultural or natural monuments or
local heritage (that attract visitors). Some of the negatives include rising costs for locals,
the fact that jobs and income tend to be seasonal, the possible dilution of local
culture/customs, potentially a rising crime rate (depending on the location), possible
conflicts between locals and tourists for various reasons, conflicts around land use e.g.
hotel and commercial operators trying to set up bases in protected areas or issues with land
that some might want to local purposes but others want for tourist facilities. Positive:
income, jobs, diversity Negative: often poor jobs, tacky tourism can ruin an area, tourism
often associated with environmental disruption Positives Increased income, better
services and facilities, in some ecotourism locations better education and investment.
Negatives Litter, pollution, dilution of local culture, crime, damage to landforms and
landmarks Too many people spoil the place crowded beaches, arguments between
surfers Brings money into an area providing jobs and encouraging people to stay in the area
rather than moving away for work. My experience is that tourism has effected some
places negatively in terms of new development leading to high apartment towers interfering
with beach views, sun etc. But development also allows people to access the area easier A
catch 22! Places can change the original character that attracted tourists there in the first
place. Busy and congested Increases popularity and attracts more tourists to stay for longer
and spend more money Greater range of jobs available Adventure = commitment and the
opportunities diminish with popularity. I think in some ways it can make it better in that it
brings money to an area and there are more attractions and facilities available for tourists.
As I tend to like quiet and unspoilt places, popular places (which are often busy, crowded
and 'westernised') appeal less to me. Simple answer: changes a place completely, the
challenge is how the area manages that change!The only place I have seen it work well is
Switzerland! Overcrowding in peak visitor times. Change of shops to meet visitor needs.
Congestion of. Narrow lanes. Raised income Seasonal vacancies More facilities eg range
of restaurants. Overcrowding and pollution Loses some of it's 'edge' becomes more
touristy in that global brands take over on the other hand it can be cheaper to visit.

Tourism has the positive benefits of bringing in foreign income, creating new job
opportunities for local people, new buildings like hotels being built, local attractions such as
beaches or historical sites being improved and renovated. I think it helps to bring people
together and give visitors a good insight into different cultures. On the negative side, places
can lose the very sense of uniqueness that makes them such soughtafter destinations if
big business, such as global hotel chains take over. Tourists can create a lot of waste
which needs to be disposed of and are also an easy target for criminals which can lead to
locals being tempted to move from legitimate work to criminal activity. More facilities but
urbanisation, litter etc It becomes crowded and loses it's peacefulness. Positives
opens up wonderful areas to general public and provides the opportunity for people to
understand different cultures. Negatives can lead to demonstration effect in tribal and
remote areas. Prices can increase for locals. Services change towards tourists and not
locals. +Jobs provided (multiplier effect), infrastructure improves. Repatriation of profits
from large resorts. Exploitation of resources , such as water for pools, golf courses...
there is an increase in the wages of some locals, this comes at the price of deskilling and
removal from their previously owned land or accomodation. Transportation, environmental
quality and the atmosphere of a place are all altered the more tourism develops. Certainly.
Some places manage this well by limiting numbers and in this case it usually works well.
Other places can become spoilt by too much traffic (some safari sites in African countries,
for example) or too many people who don't respect the environment (coral reefs). Local
people can become resentful of tourists and tourism and these places are not nice to visit
as you are ruining things for people who actually live there, so it should always be done with
the needs of local people in mind and local people involved. Positive more amenities,
accommodation, places to eat; greater investment therefore upgraded services; better
presented environment, eg potted plants and flower displays Negative more litter; more
congestion; parking problems; lack of local services and shops everything caters for the
tourist; Positive source of income and employment to the country. Gives people a
chance to experience a new country and acquire new customs and perhaps even learn a bit
of the language. Negative loss of culture, language and increased amounts of litter and
pollution e.g. from hire cars and tourist coaches. Some holiday destinations are in dry
countries and water for swimming pools and water parks takes away valuable supplies for
the rest of the population. Umum I feel that an increase in tourism can have some
positive impacts on the destination such as creation of jobs for local people, improved
services and infrastructure. The negative side to tourism is that it could cause an increase
in litter and have an impact on the traditions and culture of an area. It becomes more
generic. It gains more money. Brings in improvements for locals (ie. infrastructure and
amenities) as well as economic gains, however too many visitors can ruin the area, services
can be heavily focused on tourism rather than what local people need. Cultural clashes ie.
old men and women wandering around Moroccan souks in just their swimwear! And taking
vital resources from locals such as water for luxury resorts in hot dry countries.
globalisation has enabled more and more people to see places that were before "off limits"
due to transport and technology. I think, the sense of discovering a "new" place is harder to
do, epecially as your likely to encounter lots of people from your own country whilst on
holiday. Tourism is a business, like any other. Places can brand themselves which has

positive and negative impacts. Positive, brings in money and helps maintain local economy,
develops infrastructure and sustains life, activity Negative, places stress on the
environment and loss of authenticity. Will become over developed. Positive money put
into local economy, people get to experience new cultures Negative a place can become
overreliant on tourist income and can lose the atmosphere or spark that made people go
there in the first place Makes people aware of potential. Means more facilities become
available. Spoils the tranquility for others.
