PRESENT SIMPLE
VS
PRESENT CONTINUOUS
When do we use the
Present Simple Tense?
We use the present simple tense when we
want to talk about fixed habits or routines
– things that don’t change.
With the present simple we say:
I play tennis.
You play tennis.
We play tennis
They play tennis
He/She/ It plays tennis.
I play tennis.
‘I play tennis’
This tells us that playing tennis is something
the speaker always does.
It is part of a routine or habit.
We can call this a permanent situation.
When do we use the
Present Continuous Tense?
We use the present continuous tense
when we want to talk about actions which
are happening at the moment, but will
soon finish.
With the present continuous we say:
I am playing tennis
You are playing tennis
We are playing tennis
They are playing tennis
He/She/It is playing tennis
I am playing tennis.
‘I play tennis’
This tells us that the speaker is playing
tennis right now.
Soon the game will be over.
We call this a temporary situation.
Formulas to remember:
subject+ verb +object+ time signal
Example:
Joe plays tennis every Saturday.
Formulas to remember:
subject+ to be +verb-ing + object+ time signal
Example:
Joe is playing tennis right now.
For simple present:
always, seldom, rarely,
never, regularly, every
every Monday, etc.
For present continuous:
right now, at the
moment, this time,
presently, currently, etc.
In forming sentences:
The verb should
always agree with
the subject.
Identify the error in the following
sentences:
Today she spends time with her
grand mother.
Today she is spending time with her
grand mother.
They usually are going to the
gym on Sundays.
