Dear All,
IEEE has become a real communicator and facilitator amongst all the scientific and
technical communities which are striving for the betterment of the world. Pandit
Deendayal Petroleum University would also like to play an important role of
counterpart in this process. The IEEE Student Branch at PDPU was established in
the year 2012. After its establishment, we have started number of activities
under IEEE Student Branch, PDPU.
Workshops in popular areas, distinguished lectures and student competitions are
the part of our student branch activities. In 2013, we thought of starting a
student affinity group – “Math and Computing Tools (MACT)” whose members are
specialized in different math and computing tools used in industry and academia
for research and development. Under this group, we have prepared a systematic
tutorial on the programming languages such as MATLAB and LabVIEW. The student
group members are independently capable of conducting workshops on different
math and computing tools to spread the awareness and knowledge across the
community. Recently, we conducted such workshop at Nirma University and our
efforts have been well appreciated by the participants of the workshop.
We have successfully launched the IEEE IAS chapter in the year 2013. We have
received initial starting subsidy of 500$ under the IAS chapter. We are indeed
grateful to Mr. Blake Lloyd, President IAS and Dr. Peter Magyar, CMD IAS for
visiting our branch and our university in the year 2013. Mr. Naveen Velmurgan, IAS
Chapter Chair at PDPU received the prestigious Zuker Award to present a
technical paper at IAS Annual Meeting, 2013 which was held at Orlando, USA.
To make IEEE student branch, PDPU a success, we shall really need a kind
collaborative support of all other student branch of Gujarat Section. I invite all
IEEE members and student community to extend your support and join us in the
activities related to IEEE at our student branch.

Counsellor's Message
Message of the Chairperson
IEEE is the largest technical professional society in the world. My association with IEEE
Started a long back in my 1st year of undergraduate studies by a presentation on IEEE
Organization by our branch seniors. With the intention to bring out something worth to
contribute to the society as a whole, with new research and development, IEEE in my eyes
is one of the biggest associations in Research & Development and it provides an extremely
valuable opportunity for student members to network and interact with the professional
community. Members are able to experience and learn about the advancing technology
through conferences, presentations and professional publications such as the IEEE website
and member magazine.
This is a really overwhelming moment for me to address my friends due to the success that
our team has finally fetched. But I'll call this achievement a full success when every
engineer grabs opportunities through it and just amalgamate them fully in the technical
scenario. It's all because of the long term support and guidance of professors, seniors,
colleagues and my juniors that this year we were able to associate our PDPU with one of
the biggest professional community of the world where we can share, learn and explore
opportunities for us. I would have never been able to realize the frame of my dreams
without faith of Branch Counsellor and of course it goes without saying that the co-
operation and support of IEEE authorities is indispensable. With so much of support and
blessings of God when I have reached here, I would request every student of IEEE
Student branch of PDPU rather all the technocrats to exhilarate themselves with
technical spirit. Explore every opportunity, channelize them and nurture your innovations
and emerge as the best technocrats. I'll leave no stone unturned to devote myself in the
field of technology and would try that more and more students become the part of this
technology development. Even sky shouldn't be the limit for our imaginations and
innovations and we'll convert these incredible imaginations into reality through
advancements in technology patronized by IEEE.
At last I would like to thank Dr. Vivek Pandya, Prof. Nishant Parikh, Prof. Anil Markana and
the entire faculty of The Electrical Engineering Department, PDPU to provide me the
platform to motivate students and faculties towards the era of research, development and
advancing technology.
Thanks,
Dhirendra Raghuwanshi

SIG-MACT: Scilab Workshop
Date: 21st December 2013
Scilab is a Free Open Source Software (FOSS) and it is a part of FOSSEE project.
A one- Day Workshop on Scilab was conducted by our SIG members.
Scilab is a high-level, numerically oriented programming language. The language provides
an interpreted programming environment, with matrices as the main data type. By using matrix-based
computation, dynamic typing, and automatic memory management, many numerical problems may be
expressed in a reduced number of code lines, as compared to similar solutions using traditional
languages, such as Fortran, C, or C++. This allows users to rapidly construct models for a range of
mathematical problems. While the language provides simple matrix operations such as multiplication,
the Scilab package also provides a library of high-level operations such as correlation and complex
multidimensional arithmetic. The software can be used for signal processing, statistical analysis, image
enhancement, fluid dynamics simulations, and numerical optimization.[1][2]
As the syntax of Scilab is similar to MATLAB, Scilab includes a source code translator for assisting the
conversion of code from MATLAB to Scilab. Scilab is available free of cost under an open
source license. Due to the open source nature of the software, some user contributions have been
integrated into the main program.
The workshop had 25 IEEE members and 50 non-IEEE members participating.

Applications
These are the basics of Android applications:
• Each component performs a different role in the overall application behaviour, and each one can
be activated individually (even by other applications)
•The manifest file must declare all components in the application and should also declare all
application requirements, such as the minimum version of Android required and any hardware
configurations required
•Non-code application resources (images, strings, layout files, etc.) should include alternatives for
different device configurations (such as different strings for different languages).
The workshop was conducted by professionals from IIT-Guwahati.
What We Learnt:
Effectively build professional mobile business applications using Java and the Android SDK
•Create intuitive, reliable software using activities, services and intents
•Design engaging user Interfaces that work seamlessly with a range of phones and tablets

  • 4. Dear All, IEEE has become a real communicator and facilitator amongst all the scientific and technical communities which are striving for the betterment of the world. Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University would also like to play an important role of counterpart in this process. The IEEE Student Branch at PDPU was established in the year 2012. After its establishment, we have started number of activities under IEEE Student Branch, PDPU. Workshops in popular areas, distinguished lectures and student competitions are the part of our student branch activities. In 2013, we thought of starting a student affinity group – “Math and Computing Tools (MACT)” whose members are specialized in different math and computing tools used in industry and academia for research and development. Under this group, we have prepared a systematic tutorial on the programming languages such as MATLAB and LabVIEW. The student group members are independently capable of conducting workshops on different math and computing tools to spread the awareness and knowledge across the community. Recently, we conducted such workshop at Nirma University and our efforts have been well appreciated by the participants of the workshop. We have successfully launched the IEEE IAS chapter in the year 2013. We have received initial starting subsidy of 500$ under the IAS chapter. We are indeed grateful to Mr. Blake Lloyd, President IAS and Dr. Peter Magyar, CMD IAS for visiting our branch and our university in the year 2013. Mr. Naveen Velmurgan, IAS Chapter Chair at PDPU received the prestigious Zuker Award to present a technical paper at IAS Annual Meeting, 2013 which was held at Orlando, USA. To make IEEE student branch, PDPU a success, we shall really need a kind collaborative support of all other student branch of Gujarat Section. I invite all IEEE members and student community to extend your support and join us in the activities related to IEEE at our student branch. Thanks, Nishant Parikh, Counsellor, IEEE Student Branch, Mb. +91 9825549973 Counsellor's Message
  • 5. Message of the Chairperson IEEE is the largest technical professional society in the world. My association with IEEE Started a long back in my 1st year of undergraduate studies by a presentation on IEEE Organization by our branch seniors. With the intention to bring out something worth to contribute to the society as a whole, with new research and development, IEEE in my eyes is one of the biggest associations in Research & Development and it provides an extremely valuable opportunity for student members to network and interact with the professional community. Members are able to experience and learn about the advancing technology through conferences, presentations and professional publications such as the IEEE website and member magazine. This is a really overwhelming moment for me to address my friends due to the success that our team has finally fetched. But I'll call this achievement a full success when every engineer grabs opportunities through it and just amalgamate them fully in the technical scenario. It's all because of the long term support and guidance of professors, seniors, colleagues and my juniors that this year we were able to associate our PDPU with one of the biggest professional community of the world where we can share, learn and explore opportunities for us. I would have never been able to realize the frame of my dreams without faith of Branch Counsellor and of course it goes without saying that the co- operation and support of IEEE authorities is indispensable. With so much of support and blessings of God when I have reached here, I would request every student of IEEE Student branch of PDPU rather all the technocrats to exhilarate themselves with technical spirit. Explore every opportunity, channelize them and nurture your innovations and emerge as the best technocrats. I'll leave no stone unturned to devote myself in the field of technology and would try that more and more students become the part of this technology development. Even sky shouldn't be the limit for our imaginations and innovations and we'll convert these incredible imaginations into reality through advancements in technology patronized by IEEE. At last I would like to thank Dr. Vivek Pandya, Prof. Nishant Parikh, Prof. Anil Markana and the entire faculty of The Electrical Engineering Department, PDPU to provide me the platform to motivate students and faculties towards the era of research, development and advancing technology. Thanks, Dhirendra Raghuwanshi IEEE Student Branch,PDPU Dear All,

A one- Day Workshop on Scilab was conducted by our SIG members. Scilab is a high-level, numerically oriented programming language. The language provides an interpreted programming environment, with matrices as the main data type. By using matrix-based computation, dynamic typing, and automatic memory management, many numerical problems may be expressed in a reduced number of code lines, as compared to similar solutions using traditional languages, such as Fortran, C, or C++. This allows users to rapidly construct models for a range of mathematical problems. While the language provides simple matrix operations such as multiplication, the Scilab package also provides a library of high-level operations such as correlation and complex multidimensional arithmetic. The software can be used for signal processing, statistical analysis, image enhancement, fluid dynamics simulations, and numerical optimization.[1][2] As the syntax of Scilab is similar to MATLAB, Scilab includes a source code translator for assisting the conversion of code from MATLAB to Scilab. Scilab is available free of cost under an open source license. Due to the open source nature of the software, some user contributions have been integrated into the main program. The workshop had 25 IEEE members and 50 non-IEEE members participating.
