Latest Trends in I.T
Grid Computing
• The term grid computing originated in the early 1990’s as a metaphor
for making computer power as easy to access as an electric power
grid. Lan Foster, Carl Kesselman and Steve Tuecke are regarded as
the “Fathers of Grid Computing”.
• Grid computing is a term referring to the combination of computer
resources from multiple administrative domains to reach a common
goal.
• Distributed or Grid computing in general is a special type of parallel
computing that relies on complete computers connected to a
network by a conventional network interface such as Ethernet.
• Grids are typically managed by Grid ware. Grid ware can be viewed as
a special type of middleware that enables sharing and manage grid
components based on user requirements and resource attributes one
of the main strategies of grid computing is to use middleware to
divide and apportion pieces of a program among several computers
sometimes up to many thousands. Grid computing involves
computation in a distributed manner.
Need for Grid Computing
• Helps in solving problems such as protein folding, financial modelling,
earthquake simulation and weather modelling.
• It offers a way of using the information technology resources
optimally inside an organisation.
• Information technology is becoming a useful resource for commercial
and non-commercials clients.
Process of appraisal in I.T
sector
Process of performance appraisal
• Plan and set goals for the individual.
• Develop an awareness in employees about the PA system.
• The employees should give their best performance keeping the goals
in mind.
• Review and recognize the best performances that are progressive for
the organization.
• Process of Performance appraisal.
• Performance appraiser planning and execution.
• Performance Assessment and Review.
• Performance based Compensation.
Methodologies of PA
There are different methodologies of PA which differ from company
to company. But the common ones are as follows:
• Psychological and behavioural appraisal method.
• 360 degrees feedback: feedback is given from manager to employee
and employee to manager, open, transparent and interactive.
• Target oriented achievement scale: this gives an employee a chance
to prove all that he or she has achieved in the past period with actual
figures and data on hand.

Types of Cost
• Estimating the cost : It involves developing an approximation of cost
of resources needed to complete project activities. It is a prediction of
cost based on known information.
• Determine Budget : It is a process of aggregating the estimated costs
of individual activity to establish authorised cost baseline. Cost
baseline includes all authorised budgets but excludes management
reserves.
• Control Cost : It is a process of monitoring the project status to
update the budget and managing the cost baseline. It also requires
recording actual cost. It is a relationship between consumption of
fund to actual work performed.

improve their business.
Types of Customers
• External customers: External customer includes not just the paying

departments who play role in helping you to serve external
customers.

• Leading indicator of customer repurchase intentions and loyalty.
• A point of differentiation.
• Reduces customer churn.
• Reduces negative word of mouth.
• Helps to establish brand.
Business Intelligence Warehouse
– OLAP
• In today’s dynamic world we would like to have a flexible reporting
system, in which we have a quick run through of various sectors,
various fields, various data connected with different functional areas
may be materials, sales, production planning, hr, etc.
• Business intelligence warehouse is a collection of data, normalising of
data in terms of extraction, transformation and loading into another
data base which is called as data warehouse from there we take
extract the data into a disciplined way for its utilisation. For which
different ODS are created after which different cubes are there for its
appropriate utilisation.
• Business Intelligence utilises a lot of computer systems due to which
there is a lot of data in different systems. The structured data comes
into existence due to various business transactions that we perform
like procuring material, selling material, producing material, sending
invoices etc.
• For making your business successful we need to find out the business
environment as on date, take help of all the data that we have got
and then compile these ideas to come on a final decision.
• Technology only helps to fetch and display out the data.
• If we know our business well we will be able to know the relevant
fields for the ODS formation. For a successful business we need to
form a structured ODS.
• For a good business intelligence warehouse we need to understand
our business logic and perspective.

Mr. Surya Narayana
Client Relationship Manager at Hewlett
Packard
• Mr. Surya Narayana started his career long back from 1984 as an IT
manager in Cooperation bank and now as a Client Relationship
Manager at HP.
• He has been in the IT sector when it was developing in India. He also
mentioned the difficulties faced by this sector in 1980’s. The first IT
project which was visible to people in India was the railway
reservation system.
• The first Institute to provide IT education was NIIT as most of the
engineering colleges did not offer this specialisation.
• Technology is the major driving force. In the present situation there is
no distinction between business and technology. They are inter
twined. A combination of communication technology and business is
going to give a new phase to the industry.
• He shared his view that there should be industry and academic
collaboration.
• Always learn from your experience and mistakes. Always keep faith
and believe in yourself. A position doesn’t make a person.
• Focus on whatever you are doing in life either personal or
professional.
Ms. Rubeena Singh
COO at Moneycontrol.com
• Ms. Rubeena Singh started her career 15 years back where she
started from Star news, Star plus, CNBC news, she was also involved
in the launch of ChannelV and Starnews Hindi.
• For your career success you don’t need to do things differently, but u
need to do the same things in a better way. Continue to stay focused
and give your 100 %.
• The one thing that should keep a person going is excellence and
continued efforts to do better than before.
• Leadership is to inspire a team to dream more, learn more, and grow
more.
• For a woman to step in the corporate world she has to be less
sensitive, be open to criticism, demonstrate a lot of commitment to
your work.
• You always have to put what is best for the business and be high on
integrity.
Mr. Shekhar Oak
Director Ocean, Hellmann Worldwide
Logistics
• Mr. Shekhar Oak has devoted 28 years of his life to various shipping
liner agencies like Nedloyd, Maersk, k-Line, DSR-Senator.
• He shared his travel experience as he travels extensively for the
growth and development of the business.
• A person should always learn and upgrade one self.
• The company should always give priority to the services of the
customer. There is always a scope of improvement in this industry.
• Always be transparent with your customers so as to retain their trust.
• If you are doing a regular business which everyone is doing then it’s a
routine business, the margins are same. Do business in niche market
or do something different.
• You have to provide a good solution in logistics business.
• The first thing which keeps your team motivated is appreciation.
Different ways are used and applied for the motivation of the
employees.
• Training is the most important thing for the new joinee’s.
• Be a good team player and build strong foundation and there is a
surity for the success of the company.
• World Bank in their Global logistics report, 2007 has ranked India 39th
among 150 countries in terms of logistics performance.
• Logistics should also be considered as a different sector itself. There
are many colleges and institute which are now offering logistics as a
part of education.
• Globally the governments should recognise logistics as a different
sector.
• If the infrastructure is improved and maintained properly 50% of the
problems will be solved.
• Networking is something which a person should like when he enters
this industry. Man manning is also important for a person at higher
levels.
• Time changes and you need to change as per it. You need to be
flexible and be open to learning.
• Whichever industry u go u should have thorough knowledge of your
subject.
• Always be positive, hopeful and give your best.

Competency Mapping
• Competency mapping not only helps in the Appraisal process but it
also helps in hiring the right talent through better filtering of the core
competencies required for the job and eliminating the unqualified
candidates. It helps in shortening the recruitment cycle by getting
only those candidates who possess the skills as mentioned in the
framework and putting them in the right department from day one to
ensure the efficiency and effectiveness is maintained. Overall, the
necessity of a Competency Framework is a must for every
organization, but it is with the support of the management that its
effectiveness can be rightly put in place.
Personal Branding
• The most important thing for a person is personal brand and standing
out in the social world. Because our challenge is through the web,
computer, and the written world, it requires a different approach than
meeting a person.
• This concept is similar to how people communicate. Most people are
standing a few feet from each other speaking to each other with the
mouth moving but little less energy or emotion. One person you
notice has a crowd around them and is using their hands, smiling,
animated, having fun and engaging others to have fun and
participate, too. Their energy is stimulating others energy.
• We all have the potential to be this and do this.
• Our “persona” is both internal and external. For some it comes easier than
others.
Some of the things we can do to develop internal and external persona:
• Develop a professional appearance and image
• Develop a positive mind set and attitude
• Discover your communication style
• Nurture and manage relationships
• Mentor others
• Advocate and support others
• Volunteer and give back
TEAM COMPOSITION
• A good team work always determines the success of the organisation.
• Yet we see entrepreneurs and senior executives struggle to get this
one right. And if this aspect is not right, there is a risk of all the other
objectives getting de-railed.
• The beginning of the project you need someone who can be creative,
imaginative, someone who can think out of box, give big ideas etc.
Person who has these traits can be apt. You also need someone who
is outgoing, enthusiastic, and communicative, someone who explores
opportunities and develops contacts. Person having such traits can be
termed as ‘Resource Investigator’.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT
• Career development options within the organisation should be the
first step to enhance the skills of the employees and also develop a
sense of loyalty in towards their employer.
• Companies can develop their own personalised and unique career
development programs. Many organisations now have online portals
and platforms to help the employees nominate themselves for a
training course or opt for an e-learning course.
• Developing a user friendly online resource facilitates the employee to
take up the training as per his convenience to improve upon his skills.
HUMAN CAPITAL MANAGEMENT
• Human Capital management plays an important role in the
recruitment process. It ensures that human resource professionals
hire individuals who really deserve to be in the organization.
• Recruiting the right talent is of utmost importance. An individual who
is not fit for a particular role will not be able to contribute much in
the long run.
• Employees, individuals who spend maximum part of their day
contributing towards the success of an organization are its most
crucial resource. Employees can either make or break an organization,
truly making them an organization’s lifeline.
Human capital management is important for:
• Hiring the right talent.
• Orienting him/her to the organization.
• Making a new employee feel comfortable.
• Training employees in order to constantly upgrade their skills.
• Retaining employees.
• Making employees self-sufficient and prepare them for adverse
conditions.
Types of Innovation
The different types of innovations are:
• Product performance – New products or features. E.g. Dyson launched a
transparent vacuum cleaner with no bag.
• Channel – How you get to market. E.g. Amazon’s Whispernet service allows
users to order and download a Kindle book in one minute.
• Customer Engagement – The client experience. E.g. Blizzard
Entertainment’s World of Warcraft gives players a collaborative gaming
experience.
• Network – External relationships and partnerships. E.g. Toshiba
collaborated with UPS to repair Toshiba laptops.
• Brand – The promise you make. E.g. Virgin. From Cola to Space travel, all
the many Virgin companies share a fun, challenger image.
Bengaluru amongst best cities for I.T
workplaces.
• According to Prasenjit Bhattacharya, CEO, Great Place To Work
Institute India, said, “In our survey this year, the IT & ITeS sector
accounted for nearly one-third of the companies we studied across
the Indian industry.”
• Bengaluru has topped the list of the most popular location to work
with respect to IT. The city houses, the headquarters of nearly one-
quarter (24 per cent) of the best workplaces this year, including
Happiest Minds, Intuit, Cisco, Salesforce and EMC India.
• Adobe Systems India, Google India and Microsoft India are among the
50 Best IT, based on a country-wide engagement survey of over
36,500 employees from 145 IT.
• The top 50 were identified based on an assessment of employee
perceptions gauged using the engagement survey and an audit of
company practices.
LINKEDIN PRODUCTS FOR THE INDIAN
MARKET
• As the country has a lot of infrastructure challenges, the functioning
of each plan has been differentiated and is targeted more towards the
needs of the 3 segments; the students, the professionals and the
SMBs.
• The new initiatives helps the company to keep pace with the rising
demand for knowledge and access to opportunity.
• The initiatives as announced, begins with the LinkedIn Light, which is
meant for the public at general, and even the students for that
matter, who are a ‘mobile-first’ audience, yet face infrastructure
challenges when it comes to operating on the web, through their
mobiles.
• LinkedIn Starter pack, this product is targeted at SMBs (Small and Medium-
sized Businesses), who remain disorganized and fragmented in their efforts
to bring in talent into their business. The Starter Pack will be more
upgraded, and will give these SMBs a better marketing, hiring, and learning
solutions on the single platform, for utilizing their hidden potential as
enterprises. Currently in the pilot phase, this is being offered on a ‘first-
come-first-serve’ basis to SMBs.
• LinkedIn currently does not have a competition in this space. They have
launched their pilot projects for these products, which will give them a
‘first-mover’ advantage.
• The financial viability will be tested with the business model they make for
these products, especially when they go mainstream into the market.
CREATING A SUCCESSFUL MOBILE APP
• Developing good applications has made a lot of people very rich and
famous overnight, and that is why this industry continues to attract
new developers. Every year millions of applications are launched but
only a few of them get noticed. Sometimes it becomes a great
disaster of the time and money invested in the app when it doesn’t
become noticed by people.
• The hardest part is to convince the user to download and try the app
for the first time.
• The first thing which motivates someone to download an app are:
1) Good icon design
2) Catchy app name
3) Well written description etc.
• The app reaches the users in the following way :
1) By being featured on the store
2) By being referred by friend
3) By watching ads on Facebook
4) Mention of app in Blogs
5) Mention in Awards for apps
OVERCONFIDENCE - A CAREER
OBSTACLE
• Overconfidence does not protect you from mistakes. The person with star
sickness is so confident in himself that he forgets about being cautious. He
forgets to ask for advice, double-check things, and test all. As a result, the
probability of failures increases.
• Confidence is a useful thing. However, there is a point where it develops
into a star sickness. Star sickness can become a serious career obstacle.
• If you notice signs of star sickness once, remember that success is a relative
concept. The road to it resembles the horizon that always runs away. There
is always way to perfection and something you should aspire to. There is
always some higher level you need to achieve.

Star sickness can become a serious career obstacle. • If you notice signs of star sickness once, remember that success is a relative concept. The road to it resembles the horizon that always runs away. There is always way to perfection and something you should aspire to. There is always some higher level you need to achieve.
