I have moved back within the Consulting Engineering environment to
progress my CAD, BIM and Management skills, also the move back to
living back at home was an added draw.
I am currently taking on several REVIT roles within the company with a
view to standardising the formats and production methods or drawing,
design and project management. A CAD/Revit/BIM management role in
order to develop a smooth transition from concept to construction.
The current work which I am undertaking is wide and varied and again
is anything from simple structural modifications and refurbishments to

2012 - 2015 JACOBS ENGINEERING (on site at Shell, Bacton Gas Plant)
LEAD CIVIL/STRUCTURAL CAD DESIGNER
I am the only Senior C&S designer based on site at the Bacton
Rejuvenation Project in Norfolk. I have to date had a complete change
of location working ‘on site’ in Norfolk, further developed my Oil and
Gas experience and also refreshed a lot of my previous experience in
doing complete site surveys and investigations.
The project is a complete E.P.C project involving the redesign of the
Shell North Sea Gas processing plant, and being the only C&S designer
have been involved in all aspect of the works including foundations,
support steelwork, remedial works, modification of existing structures,
the redesign, rerouting and modification of the drainage and also
highways, aswell as working with all the other disciplines such as
Electrical, C&I, Process, Piping etc in order to co-ordinate the destruct
of the existing and construction of the new buildings, control rooms,
plant rooms, pipe supports, waste water treatment plant, desalination
plant etc whilst maintaining a working plant.
I have done every aspect of CAD work involved with the site from the
setting out and detailing of buildings and pipework, cable routing
drainage setting out, completing GA’s , detailing of steelwork and RC
work for both the new and temporary work, even providing help and
support to all other disciplines with setting out.
2011 CAPITA SYMONDS

The main projects I was involved with were the ongoing £1bn
Spinningfields development in Manchester City Centre, creating a new,
high quality commercial and mixed use business ‘zones’. Working and
liasing with Allied London Properties, and Manchester City Council,
aswell as planning and detailing work within the 22 acre scheme which
extends from Deansgate to the River Irwell.
I have been involved in the planning and setting out of the proposed
building zones aswell as the detailing of the buildings themselves, from
setting out, steelwork, reinforced concrete and glazing.
One of the stranger project I have worked on whilst here has been the
complete redesign of the Coronation Street set for Granada Televsion
where we designed and detailed the concrete substructure, the main
steelwork frames and gantries and the brick facades.

I have been involved in most of the jobs that have been in the office
being one of only three technicians. Whilst a small practice, the work
has been very diverse from Carlsberg, Black Sheep & Coors breweries
to highway/bridge works such as the A12 Witham bypass and
improvements for the A406 North Circular Road.
I have been involved in the redevelopment and expansion of several
different breweries this has been everything from the concept design and
planning meetings, client liaison, to the management and coordination
of the design team for the production of GAs and detailing of steelwork,
mainly for the process plant work but also for the storage and gas

recovery works, and has also included the creation of fabrication
drawings for the use of the steelwork manufacturer/contractor.
The Highways and Bridges work has been again GA's and setting out
works as well as RC and steelwork detailing for bridges and safety
barrier systems.

Involved with all aspects of the development of projects from initial
tender planning, including meetings, surveys, schemes etc, to the final
designs and details. Liaising with the client and his representatives,
forming solutions to immediate and unexpected problems. Co-ordination

detailing of project such as Liverpool’s’ John Lennon Airport, not only
involved with the master planning but also designing the new terminals

Learned a completely new CAD package in Bentley Microstation V8 as
well as involved with the CAD and IT support. Development of projects
from initial tender planning, including meetings, surveys, schemes etc,
to the final designs and details.
Currently involved with the design and detailing of The Woodroyd
Centre, a purpose built community hospital and recreation centre in
Bradford by Bauman Lyons, also involved with the massive
redevelopment co-ordination and master planning for the Ancoats area
of Manchester now designated New Islington in association with Urban
Splash, Grants, Alsops and the English Partnerships. Involved with the
rather interesting development of the Castlefield Quay, an area to the
bottom end of Deansgate in Central Manchester where a sympathetic
development is currently under discussion due to the site being the
location of the original Roman Fort of Mamucium and the extent of the
archaeology. Involved with several urban redevelopment projects in and
around Manchester as well as both Sheffield and Leeds in Yorkshire.

RSPB, Hodder Associates and Urban Splash which are proposed timber
hides for the disabled, an exhibition /visitors centre for The National
Wild Flower Society and the redevelopment of an industrial box factory
into exclusive city centre residential apartments respectively.
As the requirements of each client at the tender stages are different it
has been necessary not only to help the client with his design outlook
but also be able to work in 3D as well as 2D

As the Design Office Manager I am involved in the training of junior
technicians, the co-ordination of draughtsmen and engineers and
liaisons with site and major clients.
As the senior structural engineer I have sole responsibility for the
production and checking of all calculations and drawings. I regularly
attend both site and contracts meeting and report to the MD as to the
status, programme and costing of the various projects.
Working on a wide variety of Structural and Architectural
Iron/Aluminium projects such as the major redevelopment of The Royal
Arsenal in Woolwich, Palace Extensions for The Sultan of Brunei to
canopies, entrance features, emergency escape stairs and cast metal
railings as well as the standard range of street furniture products.

Worked on a variety of projects for NWW and BNF plc. Projects
include RC details of water retaining structures for Sweetloves STW
and Swinton STW, redesign of DI and fibreglass pipework for High
lane Reservoir in Marple. This involved re-aligning the existing
highway. Production of GAs and details in both steel and concrete for
the EPMF and Encapsulating Plant facilities at the BNF site at
Sellafield.

As sole draughtsman, responsibilities included simple design work,
assisting with site investigations and production of drawings for various
types of schemes including the refurbishment in timber of a 14th
Century church in Chadkirk, Romiley, the re-design of a timber floor
for Hazel Grove Civil Hall. Housing Association work and student
accommodation buildings in Whitworth Park for Manchester
University.

Employed in the Power and Industrial Section with responsibilities for
the production of GAs and RC detail drawings on coal fire power
station projects at Kilroot, Northern Ireland and in Dekelia, Cyprus.

Working mainly on small structural projects such as pub refurbishment
for Robinson Brewery, extensions to bus depots for Greater Manchester
Passenger Transport Executive. Involved in site survey work,

steelwork arrangements.
Hobbies and Interests
I am a ex-member of the JJB Leyland Brass Band who are still in the top ten Brass Bands in
England along with the likes of Brighouse & Rasterick , Fairey Engineering, Black Dyke
Mills etc and are invited to take part in the British Open Championship as well as The All
England Masters contest in Cambridge. I get invited on a regular basis to play with the Foden
Richarson Brass Band who are at present the number one band in the world rankings
however I am now mainly involved with brass bands at a more grass roots levels, preferring
now to helping my home town band.
I played golf at Stockport Golf Club where I was the first junior member in 1981until
recently when I moved to a more local course at the Buxton and High Peak Golf Club,
Buxton.
I am an Assistant Club Instructor for the British Sub-Aqua Club where I teach the art of
Scuba Diving. I am also a PADI Master Scuba Diver and Divemaster
I have recently become a member of the Nautical Archaeological Society involved in the
search, survey and possible recovery of artefacts and vessels as well as being a member of
the Historic Diving Society.
I have also recently become a member of the Marine Conservation Society involved with the
surveying of marine life of the world and its habitat and behaviour.
