1. Introduction to Himalayas
. . . . Welcome to Himalayas . . . .
Location of Himalayas
The Himalayan mountain range is the tallest mountain
range in the world. The Himalayan Mountains crosses six
countries: Bhutan, Tibet, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and
Afghanistan. This mountain range stretches 1,700 miles
across an area between the states of Assam and Jammu and
Kashmir. Most of the Himalayas are located in Nepal,
Bhutan and the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal
The Formation of Himalayas
The highest mountain range in the world, the snow-capped
Himalayas, is an example of a continent-to-continent collision.
This immense mountain range began to form when two large
landmasses, India(the Indian plate) and Eurasia (the Eurasian
plate), driven by tectonic plate movement, collided. Because both
landmasses have about the same rock density, one plate could not
be subducted under the other. The pressure of the colliding plates
could only be relieved by thrusting skyward. The folding, bending,

....TOURISM....
Basically, tourism activities in the Himalayas include hiking,
trekking, mountain biking, white water-rafting, mountaineering,
helicopter and plane tours, camping, fishing and farming.
3. Importance of the Himalayas
1. Historically, it is a formidable physical barrier:
The Himalayas form a natural boundary of the Indian sub continent. They have formed a
formidable barrier to the free movement of man for a very long time. The Passes of the
Himalayas are very high and in winter remain covered with snow. As such, in the past, no
large army could cross these mountains.
2. Climatic influence:
The Himalayas have tremendously influenced the climate of the Indian sub-continent. India
especially owes the prominent features of her climate to the Himalayas. The Himalayas hold
the cold winds blowing from central Asia. Thus, there are no severe winters. It also
intercepts the monsoon clouds from the south thus causing heavy rainfall on the Indian

used for transportation.
