2. Cosa significa Health Literacy?
▪ Health Literacy (HL) Alfabetizzazione sanitaria:

3. Internet in Italia
popolazione)
▪ Più dell'86% degli under 30 usa lo smartphone
▪ La fiducia nei media al tempo delle fake news
▪ La radio ottiene il primato della credibilità, con il 69,7% di italiani che la
considerano molto o abbastanza affidabile
▪ Nella tendenza alla perdita di fiducia spiccano i media digitali. Nell’ultimo
anno gli utenti hanno cominciato a vedere queste piattaforme come veicoli di
notizie soggette a possibili manipolazioni

Good afternoon to all of you. I would like to introduce in this presentation the initiatives for patient information carried out at my Institute (the Italian National Institute of Health)
I would also try to highlight the role of the medical information specialist/ medical librarian in contributing to patient empowerment and patient information initiatives. I will try to show how the ML can make a difference and act positively in this sense
1) This is a classic definition of HL, first formulated by the National Library of Medicine and used by Healthy People 2010 initiative. It was adopted by the Institute of Medicine – Board on Neuroscience and Behavioral Health – Committee on Health Literacy. Health literacy: a prescription to end confusion. Washington: National Academies Press; 2004. DOI: 10.17226/10883 IOM a 300 pages report
2) A core value strictly connected to HL is Citizens' Empowerment. Healthcare is becoming increasingly patient-centered and individualized, with the patient becoming an active subject. Community health policy must take citizens' and patients' rights as a key starting point. This includes participation in and influence on decision-making, as well as competences needed for wellbeing, including health literacy and web-based programs. The empowerment of patients and citizens through appropriate training programs, in fact, can improve health quality, efficiency and outcomes, and is of main importance in reducing health inequalities. It is likely that the population with low health literacy accesses to a lesser extent prevention and control services, because they may not be aware of disease symptoms or erroneously describe them to their doctor, or have little knowledge of their own health and disease management. To level such inequalities, it is necessary to provide the general public with the possibility of accessing high-quality health information through a single access point, and possibly through a consistent training pathway
More than three quarters of Italian population surfs the Web, looking for information. We spend almost two hours and half o9n the Internet every day, using it mostly for accessing social media, news, e mail, bank services, games.
The need for providing reliable health information for the public lead to developing an official health portal, following long-standing existing examples in other countries, such as NHS Choices in the UK and MedlinePlus in the USA.
This is the home page of the new ISS portal launched at the end of February 2018
The new portal motto is: To inform, to know, to choose
It is mainly divided into three sections Health from A to Z, including information on diseases and health conditions, Lifestyles and Environment, including information on how to improve one’s health through correct lifestyles, and information on environmental topics.
The third section is devoted to false beliefs and fake news, it includes information on fake news about health topics that often appear on the web
Last updates with the most recent topics uploaded in the website
Featured Topics : Exercise, Mediterranean Diet, Allergy, Heat waves
Last News - Updated News on Health and environmental topics, such as Dietary Supplements, Pollution, New Therapy for Melanoma, discover of a disease similar to mad cow disease in dromedaries
Multimedia including videos on topics such as:
Cosmetics are not drugs
Cosmetics: how to use them in the right way
Spots on your skin The importance of checking skin moles regularly in order to prevent skin cancer and melanoma
Autoimmunity and Pregnancy
Hotlines or Helplines on topics such as AIDS, Alcohol, Doping, Smoking, Rare Diseases and Gambling
Issalute the new portal of the National Institute of Health is the result of a joint effort of different professionals, such as Medical doctors, scientists, communication experts and medical librarians and information specialists
The characteristics of the portal are outlined in this slide
The information provided is reviewed by experts of each field
Lot of emphasis was placed on the importance of using a language that can be understood by people with different education levels and of different ages
Videos have been developed in house. Efforts were made to produce eye-catching and attractive information
News published in the press are evaluated and selected
Although librarians and information specialists skills were more oriented towards the third subgroup (SEO, tags. Keywords and links), their contribution was appreciated in the other tasks as well
They developed the screenplay for videos ,for example and took care of the diffusion of the portal ISSalute on social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
The information retrieval skills were used to retrieve on the Internet possible false beliefs and fake news, that were analysed by the experts and were explained in detail. An example of a false belief is for instance that drinking tap water, rich of calcium salts, may increase the probability of developing kidney stones. This information is not evidence based. It is important to introduce lot of water especially during the summer, but it is not necessary to drink mineral water with a low content of calcium and magnesium salts
