Lagosians are very sensitive to this and you might attract the attention of “area boys” (gangsters), who’ll demand you pay them for being in their region. Eat suya (grilled, seasoned meat), which is available in most restaurants and on the sides of streets. Visit the rebuilt Afrika Shrine (Adeleye St, Ikeja) of iconic musician Fela Kuti, where you can catch his son, Femi, performing on Thursdays and Sundays. Skip the malls and head to a market, which is better stocked and offers cheaper fruit and vegetables. The Oke Arin Market (Holloway St, Lagos Island) has great food. There’s no shortage of galleries in Lagos. Visit the Centre of Contemporary Art (9 McEwen St) in Yaba, the African Artists’ Foundation (54 Raymond Njoku St) in Ikoyi and Freedom Park (Hospital Rd, Lagos Island) on the island. Visit the Jazz Hole, which is easy to miss, as it’s tucked away on Awolowo Rd. It’s a sanctuary for lovers of jazz, vinyl and books, as well as the best place to get a decent coffee outside a hotel. 40 2 2 1) 22 ) 135 How to make it inLagos
