Lucknow: Barely had
the speculation over
much-hyped cabinet ex-
pansion subsided than
the meeting of UP BJP
chief Swatantra Dev
Singh and general sec-
retary (organisation)
Sunil Bansal with Chief
Minister Yogi Adity-
anath on Wednesday
once again sent rumour
mills in overdrive.
But contrary to the
buzz, the meeting, ac-
cording to reliable party
sources, was about fine-
tuning the party’s nomi-
nees for the upcoming
district panchayat chief
polls rather than any-
thing else. “Bansal ji
was in Varanasi and
was to return to the
State capital today
. He
returned by a chopper
which was used by dep-
uty chief minister Kes-
hav Prasad Maurya dur-
ing his visit to

party leader adding that
the meeting with the
CM was pre-scheduled.
Stung by the poor per-
formance in the recent
rural polls, the party is
now pulling out all stops
to present a united front
and quell murmurs. Ac-
cording to sources, of
the 75 seats of chairman
zila panchayats, the BJP
has set a target of win-
ning at least 60. “This
was the second meeting
on deciding the candi-
dates with the UP CM,
we had already short-
listed 45 and wanted to
finalise the remaining,”
said the party function-
ary requesting anonym-
ity
. Party’s rural focus
was underlined by na-
tional general secretary
BL Santhosh also dur-
ing his recent visit to
the State capital. First
before the panchayat
polls when he ordered
holding of “gram chau-
pals” in Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi: Jitin Prasada’s
exit from the Congress on
Wednesday is a setback for
theGrandOldPartyinterms
of optics and perception.
While he is not a huge elec-
toral asset for the Congress
in Uttar Pradesh, where it
has been down and out for
years, his joining the BJP
will reinforce the belief that
even young leaders are now
increasingly feeling suffo-
catedsincetheyseenofuture
for themselves in the party
.
Prasada is not a pan-Uttar
Pradesh leader. For that mat-
ter, neither does he hold sig-
nificantinfluenceinwestern
Uttar Pradesh from where he
hails. The Congress is al-
ready at its lowest ebb in the
key heartland state. Prasada
himself had lost the last two
Lok Sabha elections and the
2017 Assembly elections. So,
the setback is minimal in
electoral terms. However, his
exitsignalsthatthereishuge
disenchantment among lead-
ers over the party’s reluc-
tance to even make an at-
tempt at reinvention — po-
liticallyandorganisationally

A year ago, another young
leader, Jyotiraditya Scindia
had left the Congress and
joined the BJP
.
His exit will roil the Con-
gress internal politics in the

dhi family loyalists will use
his exit to question the other

 But reports from the state
suggest that the community
has been deeply upset since
selection of Yogi -belonging
to the Rajput community -
for the top post
 The resentment flared
up after last year’s Vikas
Dubey encounter - even
though many from the
community have indicated
that they had no personal
sympathy with the gangster
 Jitin Prasada -- once
among Rahul Gandhi’s
inner circle and a two-time
minister in the Manmohan
Singh-led government -- has
had a career going downhill
 Jitin was also one of the
signatories of the explosive
letter to Sonia Gandhi from
the Congress rebels
 Jitin Prasada, the BJP’s
latest acquisition from the
Congress, is expected to
restore the support of
a core constituency in
Uttar Pradesh said to be
upset with the party in
the recent days
 The Brahmins, who
comprise around 10% of
UP’s population, have been
ardent BJP supporters
since the early ‘90s, when
the Dalit votebank gained
ascendancy with the BSP’s
“Tilak, Tarazu aur Talwar”
slogan, directed against the
three upper castes
CALCULATED
MOVE
Since Wednesday morning, national media was very
curious to know BJP’s ‘big catch’ from Congress, which
was to be announced by a powerful Anil Baluni at 1 PM in
his press conference but everyone in media and political
circles was disappointed to learn that only a ‘small timer’
UP Congress leader Jitin Prasada is joining BJP. It is largely
believed in BJP circles that being a young Brahmin, he will
be able to ‘balance’ Thakur factor in UP but it is yet to be
seen that whether Jitin really has some clout and influence
over Brahmin voters in UP?
DISAPPOINTED! I have taken this
decision with a
lot of deliberation
keeping in view all the
aspects, in interests of my

Yogi Adityanath gov-

The Yogi government
has veered round the
view that it would pro-
vide more protection to
the trading community
and also help in speedy
movement of goods in
the state. While traders
have long been com-
plaining to the state gov-

state, a section of the of-
ficers in the department
has also questioned
about the futility of
these squads, which ac-
cording to them was
burden on the state ex-
chequer. The mobile
squads have been func-
tioning in the depart-
ment since 1970 to check
the tax evasion by
checking the goods dur-
ing the transportation.
More than 70% revenue
of the state government
comes from the com-
mercialtaxdepartment.
However, after the in-
troduction of GST there
is now a feeling in the
government these
squads have lost much
of the relevance and
should be disbanded. In
this connection addi-
tional commissioner

Chandra Bhushan Sin-
gh has forwarded a com-

government favouring
abolition of the age-old
system. He has report-
edly recommended that
these squads should be
merged with special in-
vestigation branch
which is responsible to
collect information
about the tax evasion.

‘FIRM UP
CONTAINMENT
ZONE STRATEGY’
To limit any further
spread of the virus
across Uttar Pradesh,
Chief Minister Yogi
Adityanath has issued
strict directives to firm
up the containment zone
strategy in the state. “The
containment zones must
be fixed and the strategy
must be firmed up after
the assessment of local
conditions by the District
Magistrates to avoid any
inconvenience to the citi-
zens,” instructed CM Yogi
Adityanath in a high-level
covid review meeting held
on Wednesday.

The UP Special Task
Force (STF) and the
Lucknow police rescued
a high court lawyer Preeti
Shukla from the clutches
of kidnappers here on
Tuesday midnight after
she had spent 52 hours
in captivity, said sen-
ior police officials on
Wednesday. One alleged
kidnapper was arrested
during the joint opera-
tion, the officials said.
They said car-borne mis-
creants had kidnapped
the woman when she was
on an evening walk near
her house in the Sush-
ant Golf City area of the
state capital on Sunday.
The officials said the
woman’s husband Anu-
rag Shukla is also a high
court lawyer and known
for two high-profile cases
related to former Uttar
Pradesh cabinet minister
Gayatri Prajapati, who
is in jail for his alleged
involvement in a multi-
crore mining case, and
another multi-crore case
allegedly involving a real
estate firm.
The Uttar Pradesh government has refused to share
information with former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur
regarding his compulsory retirement, saying the
documents are “highly confidential”. Thakur called this
denial “improper and suspicious”, saying initially he
was given compulsory retirement in an “arbitrary man-
ner” and now he was being denied information related
to his livelihood. UP cadre IPS officer Thakur was
given compulsory retirement on March 23 following a
decision taken by the Union Home Ministry.

F
ven after the
drubbing in the
recent assembly
elections in West
Bengal, Kerala,
Assam, Tamil Nadu and in
the Union Territory of Pu-
ducherry, Congress Party’s
leadership prefers somnam-
bulism to actively dealing
with issues plaguing the par-
ty. After the recent debacle,
especially in Kerala and As-
sam and Puducherry, Sonia
set up a five-member commit-
tee to look into the causes of
the poll debacle. Sonia had
called the result “unexpected
and disappointing”. The pan-
el submitted its report with
some suggestions. Report on
Bengal, where the party drew
a blank, is still awaited.
Before the high command
could recover from the jolt, it
suffered a setback with Jitin
Prasada, a member of Rahul
Gandhi’s inner coterie, re-
signing from the party. Jitin
is not a Brahmin leader of
the stature of his father, the
late Jitendra Prasada. He had
lost the last two Lok Sabha
elections and the 2017 Assem-
bly election. But with Yogi
Adityanath government hav-
ing become infamous for be-
ing pro-Thakur his induction
might further damage the
perception about Congress in
thepoll-boundUttarPradesh.
His leaving the party sig-
nals that Rahul Gandhi has
been an unwilling leader and
does not enjoy the trust of
his team. Jyotiraditya Scin-
dia was the first to leave.
There’s desert storm brew-
ing in Rajasthan as Sachin

also goes to poll along with
UP, is also witnessing trouble
between Capt. Amarinder

hu. Any wrong move could
see Punjab slip out of Con-
gress’s hands.

E
SO MANY
CALENDARS!
yaistha 20, 1943 (June 10,
2021): In the course of a recent
lecture on the ‘Rise and Fall
of the Roman Empire’, yours
truly realized that the norma-
tive calendar being followed
by most countries and inter-
national organizations – from
the UN to the World Bank – is
not the calendar started by
Julius Cesar when the Roman
Empire was at its crest , but
the Christian Calendar com-
missioned by Pope Gregory
XIII in the year 1582 when the
Holy Roman Empire (HRE)
wasatitspeak.Thesuccessor
nation- states to the HRE –
France , Germany
, Russia and
Britain – were all Christian
empires and so AD and BC
continued to mark the events
of the world. AD or anno
domini stands for the Year of
the Lord – meaning the year
of thebirthof Christ ,andnot
‘After Death’ (of Christ) as
our generation learnt in
school. BC of course stands
for ‘Before Christ’. Around
the turn of the millennium,
academic institutions and
multilateralorganizationsde-
cided to be politically correct
,and started referring to AD
as CE (Common era ) and BC
asBCE(BeforeCommonEra).
Well, even though CE privi-
leges the civilizational con-
struct of the West , it is an
improvement over AD, so let’s
welcome this incremental
change!
However, it’s important to
sharewiththereadersthatthe
officialcalendarof Indiaisthe
Saka Era calendar, chosen
over the Bikrami, Kali,
Bangla, Fasli and Nanak Sha-
hi calendars which were all in
vogue in different parts of the
country
.Thenamesof months
–Chaitra,Vaisakha,Jyaistha,
Ashad, Sravana, Bhadra,
Asvina,Kartika,Agrahayana,
Pausa, Magha and Phalgun –
are common across most In-
dian calendars. The first day
of Chaitra generally corre-
sponds to March 22 – the day
of theequinox-whenthedura-
tion of the day and night are
equal. In many ways , this is
farmorescientific,andatleast
in the context of the Indian
sub-continent, the agricultur-
al season corresponds to the
calendar.Allgovernmentnoti-
fications,AIRannouncements
and calendars issued by cen-
tral and state governments
must include dates according
to this calendar. Your column-
ist made it a point to ensure
that the session schedule is-
sued at LBSNAA includes the
Saka era dates.
How did we decide on this
calendar? Well, in 1955, the
CSIR set up a seven-member
Calendar reforms Committee
under the Chairmanship of
the noted Indian astrophysi-
cist Meghnad Saha. The task
before the Committee was to
prepare an accurate calendar
based on a scientific study
which could be adopted uni-
formly across the country
because there was increasing
pressure on state govern-
ments to adopt the calendar
most commonly used in the
region. Thus, the Nanaksha-
hi calendar was a very strong
contender in PEPSU and
Punjab , and the Bangla cal-
endar in Bengal. In fact, Ben-
galis mark the first day of
Baiskah as Poila ( first day )
Baiskah, and this is the
Bangla New Year.
The then PM Nehru wrote
‘The different calendars rep-
resent the past political divi-
sions in the country
. Now that
we have attained Independ-
ence, it is obviously desirable
that there should be a certain
uniformityinthecalendarfor
our civic, social ,and other
purposes, and this should be
done on a scientific approach
to this issue. The usage start-
ed officially on the first day of
Chaitra, 1879, corresponding
to March 22 of 1957. The Saka
era calendar is also called the
Shalivahana Shaka calendar
,and was used more exten-
sivelythantheBikramicalen-
dar, especially in the four
Southern states, Odisha and
Saurashtra besides Nepal,
Ceylon, Bali and the Philip-
pines. This was also to be seen
in the context of ‘appeasing
the south’ as the Bikrami cal-
endar was closely aligned to
the Hindi heartland!
Each calendar therefore
tells a story, and the adoption
of a calendar occupies the
mind -space of a society so
subtly that one does not even
realize that there is a deep
play of power politics and he-
gemony in this as well. When
a calendar loses its salience
in the lives of a people, much
more is lost than just a paper
on the wall which in any case
has an active shelf life of just
365 days.
How many of us know for
example that the oldest ex-
tant calendar in India is the
5097 years old Saptrishi cal-
endar of Kashmir , which is
still issued every year by the
Kashmiri Pandits who treat
this as a well-deserved badge
of honour !

The highest absolute
increase in MSP over
the previous year has
been recommended for
sesamum (Rs 452 per

been an increase of Rs
275 per quintal and Rs
235 per quintal, respec-
tively, in comparison to
last year. The differen-
tial remuneration is
aimed at encouraging
crop diversification, an
official release said.
The increase in MSP
for Kharif Crops for
marketing season 2021-
22 is in line with the
Union Budget 2018-19
announcement of fix-
ing the MSPs at a level
of at least 1.5 times of

followed by urad (65
per cent) and tur (62
per cent),” it said.

getting stuck in India
Western Railway continues
operations despite heavy rains Noida: Many students,
who are to travel
abroad for studies, are
worried about visa
cancellations and get-
ting stuck in India due
to the Covid-19 vaccine
shortage and timely
administeration of
their second dose.
Shrikant, a Bachelor

student who is afraid
that he might get stuck
in India if the vaccine
shortage continues as
he struggled a lot to
book the slot for the
first dose. He took his
first dose of Covishield
in mid-May and his
second dose is due af-
ter 12 weeks. .
“I am living in di-
lemma. If I have taken
the first dose of Cov-
ishield then there is no
guarantee that I will
get a second dose of
the same vaccine in
the US, neither the
countries are permit-
ting to take a mixed
dose of vaccine,” he
told ANI.

New Delhi: The ‘delta’
variant of COVID-19 -
the version first detect-
ed in India in October
last year - is capable of
infecting people even af-
ter they have received
both doses of the Cov-
axin or Covishield vac-
cines, according to sepa-
rate studies by AIIMS
and the National Centre
for Disease Control
(NCDC).
It is important to note
that neither study has
been peer-reviewed as
yet. The AIIMS study
suggests the ‘delta’ vari-
ant - which others, in-
cluding one by British
health authorities, say
is between 40 and 50 per
cent more infectious
than the ‘alpha’ version
first reported from the
UK - is likely behind the
majority of break-
through infections in
India.
The AIIMS-IGIB (In-
stitute of Genomics and
Integrative Biology)
study was based on an
analysis of 63 sympto-
matic patients who re-
ported to the hospital’s
emergency ward com-
plaining of high fever
persisting for five to
seven days.
Of these 63 people, 53
had been given at least
one dose of Covaxin and
the rest at least one dose
of Covishield. Thirty-
six had received both
doses of one of these
vaccines.76.9percentof

Data from the NCDC-
IGIB study indicated
that breakthrough in-
fections due to the ‘del-
ta’ variant seemed to
affect people who took
Covishield. This study
showed ‘delta’ break-

patients who had taken
that vaccine, with the

Post-implementation of Police
Commissioner system in
Kanpur, the top officials in Kanpur
can be seen all set to uproot
criminals with their activeness
and enthusiasm which is being
followed by some equivalent
officers also who are trying to
match the same rhythm of activism
to give tough time to criminals.
However, the initiative came to
a dead end with the subordinate
station in-charge, posted in the
same police stations for years,
remaining adamant on their attitude
with no fear of their seniors. The
activism of seniors and some
top officers make the police feel
responsible, but the same stands
defeated before the corrupt ways of
the subordinate station in-charge.
For a long time, most of the police
stations in-charge of 34 police
stations of the city, seem to suffer
from the incurable diseases of
wagging their tail in front of VVIP
culture be it a heinous criminal.
For example, the recently infamous
Bikaru incident had exposed the
same incurable diseases wherein
the station in-charge was more
close to the criminal Vikas Dubey
than his own department, result
of which was in front of everyone.
The police station in-charge seems
to be working in the opposite
direction, despite recently nabbing
the history-sheeter present at
the birthday party of the ruling
party, a crowd of leaders rescued
him from the custody of the
police while the police were seen
pleading in front of the leaders for
their duty.Ignoring their duty and
responsibility, some police station
in-charges appear to be on the
backfoot be it a case of naming
criminals in a case or slapping
strong sections against them in
a case.Sources informed that in
such a situation that such cops
are under the scanner of Police
Commissioner and soon some
police station in-charges could face
the music for their careless and
arrogant style of working.

District magistrate

that death of 22 patients
due to shortage of oxy-

claimed that not a sin-
gle death was caused
due to shortage of oxy-
gen. Panic was trig-
gered in public due to
the viral video and ac-
tions were taken
against the hospital

April 27 and 117 cylin-

hospital had 16 cylin-

Meanwhile hospital
management has
claimed that there was
no mock drill of block-
ing of oxygen supply.
They have released
data of deceased pa-
tients on April 27 and
27 but some persons
have came forward who
lost their dear ones
during those dates.
Ashok Chawla, local
resident said that hos-
pital management had
informed that oxygen
supply was over on
April 26 at around 1705
hrs. He had tweeted
about the situation to
DM, chief minister and
prime minister. He said
his father and daugh-

er were admitted in the
hospital and his father
collapsed due to short-
age of oxygen after
half an hour.

CHAIN OF EVENTS INQUIRY COMMITTEE
The matter came into light after a
video clip went viral on social media
in which the owner of the Paras
hospital was purportedly heard say-
ing that he conducted a “mock drill”
in which oxygen supply was cut off
for Covid patients for five minutes.
It was reported that four videos were
viral on social media where hospi-
tal owner Arinjay Jain were saying
that 22 patients were died in mock
drill conducted by hospital on his
instructions. About 96 patients were
admitted in hospital that time.
The Agra administration has set
a two-member inquiry commit-
tee to investigate allegations.
The committee has been asked
to submit its report in two
days.Earlier, Paras hospital
was sealed last year, in the first
lockdown for anomalies and
patients had to be shifted to the
Saifai hospital. The state gov-
ernment has already ordered
a magisterial inquiry into the
allegations.
POLITICAL SLUGFEST
CAPACITY: 52, PASSENGERS: 115
However, leaders of
various opposition par-
ties, including Priyanka
Gandhi Vadra, have
demanded firm action
against the hospital.
Tagging media reports
on the incident, Gandhi
tweeted, “Amidst
severe shortage of
oxygen, the Uttar
Pradesh government
kept on saying ‘there
is no shortage’. People
across the state strug-
gled and lost their lives.
The administration in
Agra is also saying
‘there was no short-
age of oxygen’.”Earlier
on Tuesday evening,
Congress workers also
raised slogans at the
hospital gate demand-
ing the arrest of the
owners. The hospital
management has been
at pains to explain the
content of the viral
video, but the public
ire and the backlog
of pent-up emotions
of victims against the
medical fraternity, in
general, has raised the
pitch so high that the
so-called “friendly”
sources in the ruling
party and administra-
tion of the hospital
owners have backed
out this time.
FIR was registered against

tal). Hospital was sealed im-
mediately. Patients were

garding suspension of their

Serious facts regarding the accident on the

been revealed. It is being alleged that the
driver and the conductor of the bus involved
in the accident were both drunk even before
the journey started and the bus with a
maximum capacity of 52 people was carry-
ing 115 people, majorly laborers returning
to work as the lockdown was relaxed in the
state. It was not only the bus that was over-
crowded, the auto-rickshaw which collided
with the bus was coming in the wrong direc-
tion of the highway just to avoid travelling 7
KM was also crammed with passengers. A
total of 18 passengers were present in the
auto-rickshaw against the maximum capac-
ity of 8.The overcrowded bus was being
overtaken by a DCM in on the highway when
the auto which was at a higher speed got
sandwiched between the two big vehicles.
The crashing of the auto caused the bus to

sent to Legislative
Council. Highly placed
sources in the party in-
formed that apart from
this, he can be given a
bigpostintheorganisa-
tion at UP BJP or even
at the national level.
Leaders like Dinesh
Sharma and Brijesh
Pathak are already pre-
sent in the BJP
. In such
a situation, the ques-
tion is what is the work
of Jitin after the pres-
ence of these big Brah-
min faces in BJP
. Politi-
cal analysts say that
these two leaders could
not establish them-
selves in national level
politics. Dinesh Shar-
ma does not have that
much ground base,
while the image of
Brijesh Pathak coming
from BSP has not been
washed away yet.
Jitin’s home district is
S h a h j a h a n p u r ,
Dhaurhara and Lakh-
impur. In this Terai belt
from Bareilly to Pilib-
hit, Lakhimpur, Bahra-
ich, Shahjahanpur,
Prasad is recognized as
a eminent Brahmin
leader. In such a situa-
tion, Jitin Prasada can
prove to be a big leader
in Central UP
.
Congress president
Ajay Lallu dubbed
Prasada a “betrayer”
and lamented that he
jumpedshipdespitethe
party providing him
multiple opportunities
including his recent
key West Bengal role.
In 2004, Jitin contest-
ed and won the first
Lok Sabha election
from his home district
Shahjahanpur. He was
the Minister of State
for Steel in the Con-
gress Government.

Lucknow: The Assem-
bly elections in Uttar
Pradesh might be next
year but the political
parties in the state have
been already making
strategies for some time
now. Parties have been
analyzing who has the
best chances to win,
with whom will alliance
to be made. These as-
pects of the election
will soon be revealed in
the coming months.
JD (U), VIP and HAM
whose alliance is cur-
rently heading the
neighbouring state of
Bihar is also eyeing to
jump into the political
ring in UP
. What is to be
seen is if these parties
will form an alliance or
try some other strategy
.
Seculations are rife
in the state that if BJP
were to give chance to
JD (U), VIP, HUM, then
they could fight the
elections together but if
the BJP does not coop-
erate, then JDU, VIP
and HAM can form an
alliance among them-
selves and fight the elec-
tions. The Vikassheel
Insaan Party (VIP) has
already been trying to
strategize to win over
the 14% Nishad com-
munity in UP. The VIP
this time around seems
like it is determined to
win some seats in the
state. The thinktank of
the party know that for
the party to move for-
ward, it will have to
spread its existence out-
side of Bihar too. The
party’s national presi-
dent and minister in the
Bihar government,
Mukesh Sahni, is busy
meeting people from
different cities.
On the other hand,
the speculations of
these parties jumping
to fray has opposition
party talking with
RJD saying that HAM,
VIP and JDU are not
doing well with BJP.
Congress also has
termed this scenario
as an internal matter
of NDA which has
arisen due to lack of
coordination between
the two parties.

Lucknow: After Con-
gress leader Jitin Pras-
ada joined BJP, another
Congress rebel MLA
Aditi Singh has said
that she will soon de-
cide which party to join
and contest the upcom-

Aditi Singh said that
the gap left by the depar-
ture of Jitin Prasada
will be difficult for the
Congress to fill and the
party’s senior leaders
will have to show their
work in the field.
Singh said that the
Congress party should
introspect why senior
leaders are leaving the
party and that the party
needs to work on the
ground level in UP. She
further added General
Secretary of Congress
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra
should take such criti-
cism and work on them.
Aditi Singh said the loss
of Jitin Prasada will be
a big one. The high com-
mand should dig as to
why these senior lead-
ers are leaving. She fur-
ther ramped up her
criticism of the Con-
gress party by calling it
a family party and said
that Prasada will have a
bright future in BJP.

OF TWO ICONIC STARS
actually watched
Paigham when Sauda-
garwasreleasedin1991,
there was so much hype
about the two iconic
stars Dilip Kumar and
Raaj Kumar starring to-
gether after 32 years.
Paigham gives more than a
glimpseof whyDilipKumarcon-
tinues to rule generations of ac-
tors with his acting abilities,
sense of timing and dialogue de-
livery
. Raaj, who played Dilip’s
elder brother is the perfect foil to
him. I loved the scenes where the
brotherssparoverethics,values,

,principlesandmore.Both
of them,trueartistswhomatched
each other note by note with dia-
logue delivery and expressions!
Amazing! Magical!
Vijyantimala was beautiful,
restrained with sparks of flirta-
tious humour as she sparkled on
the screen, the chemistry of this
pair spanned a line of hits as we
all know. I fell in love with the
way she used her eyes to show
love, shyness, jealousy and was
excellent in the dramatic scenes.
The music of Paigham is
nothing to write home about for
me the only song which comes
to my mind now and then is
‘yahi pagham hamara….’ but
the movie is a good watch other-
wise, it manages to walk the fine
line between preachy and ideal-
istic watch and the dialogues
are like music at times with the
fine delivery
.
One of the most unforgettable
scenes is the super cute roman-
tic tease one when led on a story
Vijyantimala confesses her jeal-
ousy and love for Dilip Kumar.

magine last night you devel-
oped a little runny nose and
asorethroat.Whenyouwoke
up this morning you started
coughing and had a fever. In
the past year, your mind
would have immediately
jumped to COVID-19. But if you are
already fully vaccinated, you might
wonder: Should I still get tested for
COVID-19?
As an infectious disease physician,
I am often asked this question. The
answer is yes. If you have symptoms
of COVID-19, you should get tested
for COVID-19 even if you are fully
vaccinated. You won’t be at high risk
for hospitalization or severe disease,
but if you are infected you may pass
the virus to an unvaccinated person,
who could then get very sick.
VACCINES WORK BUT AREN’T
100% EFFECTIVE
Researchers have developed some
amazing COVID-19 vaccines over the
past year. The high efficacy of these
vaccines in the closely controlled en-
vironment of clinical trials matches
their effectiveness in real life. The
mRNA vaccines made by Pfizer and
Moderna remain over 90% effective
in preventing hospitalization or
death.
That does not, however, mean that
you have the same degree of protec-
tion from getting infected.
The latest research estimates that
the mRNA vaccines offer 70% to 85%
protection from getting infected at all.
It’s impossible to know whether a per-
son is fully protected or could still
develop a mild case if exposed to
the coronavirus.
If youdidhappentogetinfected,
youcouldstillspreadthevirus.And
that’swhytestingisstillimportant.
WHAT IS A BREAKTHROUGH
CASE?
When a person gets infected with the
coronavirus after being fully vacci-
nated, this is called a breakthrough
case. Breakthrough cases demon-
strate a basic principle of infectious
disease – whether or not a person gets
infected depends on the balance be-
tween two factors: intensity of expo-
sure and immune competence.
Intensityof exposurerelatestohow

According
to the CDC,
as of April
30, 2021,
there had
been a total of
10,262 known
SARS-CoV-2 vac-
cine breakthrough
infections in US
states and territo-
ries. These are usually
asymptomatic or only mildly
symptomatic cases, and most
don’t result in hospitalization. Break-
through cases will continue to occur,
and though these people are less like-
ly to spread the coronavirus to others
than are unvaccinated individuals,
they still probably can.
And what about the SARS-CoV-2
variants?Well,theworldhasbeenfor-
tunate that the mRNA vaccines in
particular afford significant protec-
tion against all major variants that
have emerged so far. But it is entirely
possible that at some point a corona-
virus strain could mutate and par-
tially or fully escape the protection
from vaccines. This is yet another
good reason to get tested if you are
feeling sick.
As vaccination rates rise and dai-
ly case counts fall in the US and
other countries, it is also important
to keep a close eye on the coronavi-
rus. COVID-19 testing allows offi-
cials to keep track of how much vi-
rus is in a community, and positive
test results can help people quaran-
tine before unknowingly spreading
the virus to others. So, yes, please
get tested if you have concerning
symptoms, even if you are fully vac-
cinated.

I’M FULLY VACCINATED BUT
FEEL SICK – SHOULD I GET
TESTED FOR COVID-19?
Some people can still get sick after
getting vaccinated for COVID-19.
When a person gets fully vaccinated for
novel coronavirus and still gets infected,
it is termed a ‘breakthrough case’.

could attempt to do that, he is arrest-

that his magical powers aren’t effec-

is being ordered to be ‘reset’ by the
authorities, Agent Mobius sees hope

quests the authorities to cancel his
final execution. The fans also antici-

First India-Lucknow Edition-10 June 2021

  • 1. M Tariq Khan Lucknow: Barely had the speculation over much-hyped cabinet ex- pansion subsided than the meeting of UP BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh and general sec- retary (organisation) Sunil Bansal with Chief Minister Yogi Adity- anath on Wednesday once again sent rumour mills in overdrive. But contrary to the buzz, the meeting, ac- cording to reliable party sources, was about fine- tuning the party’s nomi- nees for the upcoming district panchayat chief polls rather than any- thing else. “Bansal ji was in Varanasi and was to return to the State capital today . He returned by a chopper which was used by dep- uty chief minister Kes- hav Prasad Maurya dur- ing his visit to Prayagraj,”said a senior party leader adding that the meeting with the CM was pre-scheduled. Stung by the poor per- formance in the recent rural polls, the party is now pulling out all stops to present a united front and quell murmurs. Ac- cording to sources, of the 75 seats of chairman zila panchayats, the BJP has set a target of win- ning at least 60. “This was the second meeting on deciding the candi- dates with the UP CM, we had already short- listed 45 and wanted to finalise the remaining,” said the party function- ary requesting anonym- ity . Party’s rural focus was underlined by na- tional general secretary BL Santhosh also dur- ing his recent visit to the State capital. First before the panchayat polls when he ordered holding of “gram chau- pals” in Uttar Pradesh and again underscored after his review and feedback meetings last week State BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh said that the party workers Turn to P6 BJP sets its eye on winning at least 60 seats DISTRICT PANCHAYAT CHIEF POLLS CRUCIAL READ CBI RAIDS IN 14 LOCATIONS IN NCR CONSTABLE SHOOTS DEAD SON OF ACCUSED Lucknow: The CBI car- ried out searches at 14 locations in Delhi-NCR and three other cities after registering an FIR against Oyster Buildwell Private Ltd, Avantha group promoter Gautam Thapar and others. Named the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari said his meeting with PM Modi lasted 45 minutes during which they had “detailed discussion” on several “politi- cal issues”. Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait meets West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Wednesday. Jaane wale jaate rehte hain, we can’t stop them. It was his decision, he also had a future here (Congress Party). However, it is unfortunate Mallikarjun Kharge, Cong leader & LoP Rajya Sabha He (Jitin Prasada) is like my younger brother and I welcome him to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). I congratulate him Jyotiraditya Scindia, BJP Rajya Sabha member Jitin Prasada joining BJP is like a big slap on our face. It is sad and disheartening. I’m surprised that he called Congress a regional party and joined the party against which his family fought Harish Rawat, Congress leader A FRESH JOLT TO CONGRESS Jitin joins BJP ahead of UP polls PRASADA’S ENTRY IS A SIGNAL TO THE POLITICALLY SIGNIFICANT BRAHMIN COMMUNITY IN UP GIVEN THERE IS A PERCEPTION THAT THAKURS DOMINATE THE STATE’S POWER CORRIDORS Jitin Prasada meets Home Minister Amit Shah before joining BJP on Wednesday. BJP National President JP Nadda (2L) with Union Minister Piyush Goyal (L), BJP spokesperson Anil Baluni (R) and newly joined BJP leader Jitin Prasada (2R). Mohd Fahad/Aditi Nagar New Delhi: Jitin Prasada’s exit from the Congress on Wednesday is a setback for theGrandOldPartyinterms of optics and perception. While he is not a huge elec- toral asset for the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, where it has been down and out for years, his joining the BJP will reinforce the belief that even young leaders are now increasingly feeling suffo- catedsincetheyseenofuture for themselves in the party . Prasada is not a pan-Uttar Pradesh leader. For that mat- ter, neither does he hold sig- nificantinfluenceinwestern Uttar Pradesh from where he hails. The Congress is al- ready at its lowest ebb in the key heartland state. Prasada himself had lost the last two Lok Sabha elections and the 2017 Assembly elections. So, the setback is minimal in electoral terms. However, his exitsignalsthatthereishuge disenchantment among lead- ers over the party’s reluc- tance to even make an at- tempt at reinvention — po- liticallyandorganisationally . A year ago, another young leader, Jyotiraditya Scindia had left the Congress and joined the BJP . His exit will roil the Con- gress internal politics in the context of the G 23. The Gan- dhi family loyalists will use his exit to question the other 22pointingfingersattheirloy- alty . The others could well ar- guetheissuestheyhadflagged are real, there is massive dis- enchantmentintheparty ,and Prasada’s exit is, in fact, a pointerthatthepartyneedsto spring into action. As for the BJP, his entry is a signal to the politically significant Brahmin community ahead of the Assembly elections next Turn to P6/ Details on p8  But reports from the state suggest that the community has been deeply upset since selection of Yogi -belonging to the Rajput community - for the top post  The resentment flared up after last year’s Vikas Dubey encounter - even though many from the community have indicated that they had no personal sympathy with the gangster  Jitin Prasada -- once among Rahul Gandhi’s inner circle and a two-time minister in the Manmohan Singh-led government -- has had a career going downhill  Jitin was also one of the signatories of the explosive letter to Sonia Gandhi from the Congress rebels  Jitin Prasada, the BJP’s latest acquisition from the Congress, is expected to restore the support of a core constituency in Uttar Pradesh said to be upset with the party in the recent days  The Brahmins, who comprise around 10% of UP’s population, have been ardent BJP supporters since the early ‘90s, when the Dalit votebank gained ascendancy with the BSP’s “Tilak, Tarazu aur Talwar” slogan, directed against the three upper castes CALCULATED MOVE Since Wednesday morning, national media was very curious to know BJP’s ‘big catch’ from Congress, which was to be announced by a powerful Anil Baluni at 1 PM in his press conference but everyone in media and political circles was disappointed to learn that only a ‘small timer’ UP Congress leader Jitin Prasada is joining BJP. It is largely believed in BJP circles that being a young Brahmin, he will be able to ‘balance’ Thakur factor in UP but it is yet to be seen that whether Jitin really has some clout and influence over Brahmin voters in UP? DISAPPOINTED! I have taken this decision with a lot of deliberation keeping in view all the aspects, in interests of my district, state, and the country and to safeguard interests of the people JITIN PRASADA, after joining BJP

First India Bureau Lucknow: In order to provide more relief to trading community in the election year, the Yogi Adityanath gov- ernment has been con- sidering to abolish con- troversial mobile squad system in state’s com- mercialtaxdepartment. The Yogi government has veered round the view that it would pro- vide more protection to the trading community and also help in speedy movement of goods in the state. While traders have long been com- plaining to the state gov- ernmentaboutunneces- sary harassment by the squads on the highways and entry points in the state, a section of the of- ficers in the department has also questioned about the futility of these squads, which ac- cording to them was burden on the state ex- chequer. The mobile squads have been func- tioning in the depart- ment since 1970 to check the tax evasion by checking the goods dur- ing the transportation. More than 70% revenue of the state government comes from the com- mercialtaxdepartment. However, after the in- troduction of GST there is now a feeling in the government these squads have lost much of the relevance and should be disbanded. In this connection addi- tional commissioner commercial taxes Noida Chandra Bhushan Sin- gh has forwarded a com- prehensive report to the government favouring abolition of the age-old system. He has report- edly recommended that these squads should be merged with special in- vestigation branch which is responsible to collect information about the tax evasion. F ven after the drubbing in the recent assembly elections in West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu and in the Union Territory of Pu- ducherry, Congress Party’s leadership prefers somnam- bulism to actively dealing with issues plaguing the par- ty. After the recent debacle, especially in Kerala and As- sam and Puducherry, Sonia set up a five-member commit- tee to look into the causes of the poll debacle. Sonia had called the result “unexpected and disappointing”. The pan- el submitted its report with some suggestions. Report on Bengal, where the party drew a blank, is still awaited. Before the high command could recover from the jolt, it suffered a setback with Jitin Prasada, a member of Rahul Gandhi’s inner coterie, re- signing from the party. Jitin is not a Brahmin leader of the stature of his father, the late Jitendra Prasada. He had lost the last two Lok Sabha elections and the 2017 Assem- bly election. But with Yogi Adityanath government hav- ing become infamous for be- ing pro-Thakur his induction might further damage the perception about Congress in thepoll-boundUttarPradesh. His leaving the party sig- nals that Rahul Gandhi has been an unwilling leader and does not enjoy the trust of his team. Jyotiraditya Scin- dia was the first to leave. There’s desert storm brew- ing in Rajasthan as Sachin Pilot awaits high command’s full support. Punjab, which also goes to poll along with UP, is also witnessing trouble between Capt. Amarinder Singh and Navjot Singh Sid- hu. Any wrong move could see Punjab slip out of Con- gress’s hands. Point to ponder: Congress mukt Bharat or the Gandhi leadership has to be ‘re- thought’, JITIN’S EXIT GOOD FOR OPTICS Jitin leaving the party signals that Rahul Gandhi has been an unwilling leader and does not enjoy the trust of his team. Jyotiraditya Scindia was the first to leave E SO MANY CALENDARS! yaistha 20, 1943 (June 10, 2021): In the course of a recent lecture on the ‘Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire’, yours truly realized that the norma- tive calendar being followed by most countries and inter- national organizations – from the UN to the World Bank – is not the calendar started by Julius Cesar when the Roman Empire was at its crest , but the Christian Calendar com- missioned by Pope Gregory XIII in the year 1582 when the Holy Roman Empire (HRE) wasatitspeak.Thesuccessor nation- states to the HRE – France , Germany , Russia and Britain – were all Christian empires and so AD and BC continued to mark the events of the world. AD or anno domini stands for the Year of the Lord – meaning the year of thebirthof Christ ,andnot ‘After Death’ (of Christ) as our generation learnt in school. BC of course stands for ‘Before Christ’. Around the turn of the millennium, academic institutions and multilateralorganizationsde- cided to be politically correct ,and started referring to AD as CE (Common era ) and BC asBCE(BeforeCommonEra). Well, even though CE privi- leges the civilizational con- struct of the West , it is an improvement over AD, so let’s welcome this incremental change! However, it’s important to sharewiththereadersthatthe officialcalendarof Indiaisthe Saka Era calendar, chosen over the Bikrami, Kali, Bangla, Fasli and Nanak Sha- hi calendars which were all in vogue in different parts of the country .Thenamesof months –Chaitra,Vaisakha,Jyaistha, Ashad, Sravana, Bhadra, Asvina,Kartika,Agrahayana, Pausa, Magha and Phalgun – are common across most In- dian calendars. The first day of Chaitra generally corre- sponds to March 22 – the day of theequinox-whenthedura- tion of the day and night are equal. In many ways , this is farmorescientific, andatleast in the context of the Indian sub-continent, the agricultur- al season corresponds to the calendar.Allgovernmentnoti- fications,AIRannouncements and calendars issued by cen- tral and state governments must include dates according to this calendar. Your column- ist made it a point to ensure that the session schedule is- sued at LBSNAA includes the Saka era dates. How did we decide on this calendar? Well, in 1955, the CSIR set up a seven-member Calendar reforms Committee under the Chairmanship of the noted Indian astrophysi- cist Meghnad Saha. The task before the Committee was to prepare an accurate calendar based on a scientific study which could be adopted uni- formly across the country because there was increasing pressure on state govern- ments to adopt the calendar most commonly used in the region. Thus, the Nanaksha- hi calendar was a very strong contender in PEPSU and Punjab , and the Bangla cal- endar in Bengal. In fact, Ben- galis mark the first day of Baiskah as Poila ( first day ) Baiskah, and this is the Bangla New Year. The then PM Nehru wrote ‘The different calendars rep- resent the past political divi- sions in the country . Now that we have attained Independ- ence, it is obviously desirable that there should be a certain uniformityinthecalendarfor our civic, social ,and other purposes, and this should be done on a scientific approach to this issue. The usage start- ed officially on the first day of Chaitra, 1879, corresponding to March 22 of 1957. The Saka era calendar is also called the Shalivahana Shaka calendar ,and was used more exten- sivelythantheBikramicalen- dar, especially in the four Southern states, Odisha and Saurashtra besides Nepal, Ceylon, Bali and the Philip- pines. This was also to be seen in the context of ‘appeasing the south’ as the Bikrami cal- endar was closely aligned to the Hindi heartland! Each calendar therefore tells a story, and the adoption of a calendar occupies the mind -space of a society so subtly that one does not even realize that there is a deep play of power politics and he- gemony in this as well. When a calendar loses its salience in the lives of a people, much more is lost than just a paper on the wall which in any case has an active shelf life of just 365 days. How many of us know for example that the oldest ex- tant calendar in India is the 5097 years old Saptrishi cal- endar of Kashmir , which is still issued every year by the Kashmiri Pandits who treat this as a well-deserved badge of honour ! THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL J DR SANJEEV CHOPRA The writer is a historian, public policy analyst, and Festival Director of Valley of Words, a literature and arts festival based out of Dehradun. Till very recently, he was a member of the IAS and posted as the Director of LBS National Academy of Administration How did we decide on this calendar? However, the initiative came to a dead end with the subordinate station in-charge, posted in the same police stations for years, remaining adamant on their attitude with no fear of their seniors. The activism of seniors and some top officers make the police feel responsible, but the same stands defeated before the corrupt ways of the subordinate station in-charge. For a long time, most of the police stations in-charge of 34 police stations of the city, seem to suffer from the incurable diseases of wagging their tail in front of VVIP culture be it a heinous criminal. For example, the recently infamous Bikaru incident had exposed the same incurable diseases wherein the station in-charge was more close to the criminal Vikas Dubey than his own department, result of which was in front of everyone. The police station in-charge seems to be working in the opposite direction, despite recently nabbing the history-sheeter present at the birthday party of the ruling party, a crowd of leaders rescued him from the custody of the police while the police were seen pleading in front of the leaders for their duty.Ignoring their duty and responsibility, some police station in-charges appear to be on the backfoot be it a case of naming criminals in a case or slapping strong sections against them in a case.Sources informed that in such a situation that such cops are under the scanner of Police Commissioner and soon some police station in-charges could face the music for their careless and arrogant style of working. —Sumit Awasthi ‘HAND IN GLOVE’ COPS UNDER FIRE An incident of rape of a girl has come to light wherein a teenager who had gone to meet her lover was raped by two youths. Speaking with first India Botre Rohan Pramod, SP city con- firmed that sealing pro- cess was underway as about 55 patients will be shifted to other hospi- tals. “The orders were issued on Tuesday even- ing and sealing process was underway” he un- derlined. District magistrate Prabhu N Singh said that death of 22 patients due to shortage of oxy- gen was baseless. He claimed that not a sin- gle death was caused due to shortage of oxy- gen. Panic was trig- gered in public due to the viral video and ac- tions were taken against the hospital management under Ep- idemic diseases act for that, he pointed out.DM said that 149 oxygen cylinders were provid- ed to Paras hospital on April 26 while 121 cylin- ders were given on April 27 and 117 cylin- ders on April 28. Also, hospital had 16 cylin- ders in reserve so short- age of oxygen was out of box. Meanwhile hospital management has claimed that there was no mock drill of block- ing of oxygen supply. They have released data of deceased pa- tients on April 27 and 27 but some persons have came forward who lost their dear ones during those dates. Ashok Chawla, local resident said that hos- pital management had informed that oxygen supply was over on April 26 at around 1705 hrs. He had tweeted about the situation to DM, chief minister and prime minister. He said his father and daugh- ter-in-law of his broth- er were admitted in the hospital and his father collapsed due to short- age of oxygen after half an hour. AGRA MOCK-DRILL FIASCO CHAIN OF EVENTS INQUIRY COMMITTEE The matter came into light after a video clip went viral on social media in which the owner of the Paras hospital was purportedly heard say- ing that he conducted a “mock drill” in which oxygen supply was cut off for Covid patients for five minutes. It was reported that four videos were viral on social media where hospi- tal owner Arinjay Jain were saying that 22 patients were died in mock drill conducted by hospital on his instructions. About 96 patients were admitted in hospital that time. The Agra administration has set a two-member inquiry commit- tee to investigate allegations. The committee has been asked to submit its report in two days.Earlier, Paras hospital was sealed last year, in the first lockdown for anomalies and patients had to be shifted to the Saifai hospital. The state gov- ernment has already ordered a magisterial inquiry into the allegations. POLITICAL SLUGFEST CAPACITY: 52, PASSENGERS: 115 However, leaders of various opposition par- ties, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have demanded firm action against the hospital. Tagging media reports on the incident, Gandhi tweeted, “Amidst severe shortage of oxygen, the Uttar Pradesh government kept on saying ‘there is no shortage’. People across the state strug- gled and lost their lives. The administration in Agra is also saying ‘there was no short- age of oxygen’.”Earlier on Tuesday evening, Congress workers also raised slogans at the hospital gate demand- ing the arrest of the owners. The hospital management has been at pains to explain the content of the viral video, but the public ire and the backlog of pent-up emotions of victims against the medical fraternity, in general, has raised the pitch so high that the so-called “friendly” sources in the ruling party and administra- tion of the hospital owners have backed out this time. FIR was registered against him(owner of Paras Hospi- tal). Hospital was sealed im- mediately. Patients were shifted to other hospitals, new admissions are closed. They’ve been served notice re- garding suspension of their license. Further action will be taken after their reply. —Prabhu N Singh, Agra DM Serious facts regarding the accident on the Kanpur-Allahabad of Tuesday night have been revealed. A total of 18 passengers were present in the auto-rickshaw against the maximum capac- ity of 8.The overcrowded bus was being overtaken by a DCM in on the highway when the auto which was at a higher speed got sandwiched between the two big vehicles. Jitin Prasada’s pain was that the Congress was not able to use him the way it should have had. Jitin had been struggling within the Congress for the past few years. Even be- fore this, during Lok Sabha polls 2019, he had hinted on leaving the party but was persuad- ed by senior party lead- er for not doing so. Speaking his painful experience during his stay in Congress while joining BJP on Wednes- day, Prasada said – If you cannot help people while in politics, then what is the use of staung in politics. It is believed that BJP will now project Jitin as a big Brahmin face in UP . CM Yogi Adityanath has welcomed Jitin Prasada’s joining BJP. The CM has tweeted that with the arrival of Jitin Prasada, BJP will get strength in the state. CM Yogi tweeted, ‘WelcomeJitinPrasada on leaving Congress and joining the larger family of BJP . The join- ing of Jitin Prasada ji in the BJP will definite- ly strengthen the party in UP .” Jitin may get important position It is clear from this statement of CM that Jitin Prasada is going to have an important role in UP in the com- ing days. After such tweets of CM Yogi, speculations are rife that Prasad could be sent to Legislative Council. Highly placed sources in the party in- formed that apart from this, he can be given a bigpostintheorganisa- tion at UP BJP or even at the national level. First India Bureau Lucknow: The Assem- bly elections in Uttar Pradesh might be next year but the political parties in the state have been already making strategies for some time now. Parties have been analyzing who has the best chances to win, with whom will alliance to be made. These as- pects of the election will soon be revealed in the coming months. JD (U), VIP and HAM whose alliance is cur- rently heading the neighbouring state of Bihar is also eyeing to jump into the political ring in UP . What is to be seen is if these parties will form an alliance or try some other strategy . Seculations are rife in the state that if BJP were to give chance to JD (U), VIP, HUM, then they could fight the elections together but if the BJP does not coop- erate, then JDU, VIP and HAM can form an alliance among them- selves and fight the elec- tions. The Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) has already been trying to strategize to win over the 14% Nishad com- munity in UP. The VIP this time around seems like it is determined to win some seats in the state. The thinktank of the party know that for the party to move for- ward, it will have to spread its existence out- side of Bihar too. The party’s national presi- dent and minister in the Bihar government, Mukesh Sahni, is busy meeting people from different cities. On the other hand, the speculations of these parties jumping to fray has opposition party talking with RJD saying that HAM, VIP and JDU are not doing well with BJP. Congress also has termed this scenario as an internal matter of NDA which has arisen due to lack of coordination between the two parties. Paigham gives more than a glimpseof whyDilipKumarcon- tinues to rule generations of ac- tors with his acting abilities, sense of timing and dialogue de- livery . Raaj, who played Dilip’s elder brother is the perfect foil to him. I loved the scenes where the brotherssparoverethics, values, loyalty ,principlesandmore. Both of them, trueartistswhomatched each other note by note with dia- logue delivery and expressions! Amazing! Magical! Vijyantimala was beautiful, restrained with sparks of flirta- tious humour as she sparkled on the screen, the chemistry of this pair spanned a line of hits as we all know. I fell in love with the way she used her eyes to show love, shyness, jealousy and was excellent in the dramatic scenes. The music of Paigham is nothing to write home about for me the only song which comes to my mind now and then is ‘yahi pagham hamara….’ but the movie is a good watch other- wise, it manages to walk the fine line between preachy and ideal- istic watch and the dialogues are like music at times with the fine delivery . One of the most unforgettable scenes is the super cute roman- tic tease one when led on a story Vijyantimala confesses her jeal- ousy and love for Dilip Kumar. In the past year, your mind would have immediately jumped to COVID-19. But if you are already fully vaccinated, you might wonder: Should I still get tested for COVID-19? As an infectious disease physician, I am often asked this question. The answer is yes. If you have symptoms of COVID-19, you should get tested for COVID-19 even if you are fully vaccinated. You won’t be at high risk for hospitalization or severe disease, but if you are infected you may pass the virus to an unvaccinated person, who could then get very sick. VACCINES WORK BUT AREN’T 100% EFFECTIVE Researchers have developed some amazing COVID-19 vaccines over the past year. The high efficacy of these vaccines in the closely controlled en- vironment of clinical trials matches their effectiveness in real life. The mRNA vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna remain over 90% effective in preventing hospitalization or death. That does not, however, mean that you have the same degree of protec- tion from getting infected. The latest research estimates that the mRNA vaccines offer 70% to 85% protection from getting infected at all. It’s impossible to know whether a per- son is fully protected or could still develop a mild case if exposed to the coronavirus. If youdidhappentogetinfected, youcouldstillspreadthevirus. And that’swhytestingisstillimportant. WHAT IS A BREAKTHROUGH CASE? When a person gets infected with the coronavirus after being fully vacci- nated, this is called a breakthrough case. Breakthrough cases demon- strate a basic principle of infectious disease – whether or not a person gets infected depends on the balance be- tween two factors: intensity of expo- sure and immune competence. Intensityof exposurerelatestohow closeanuninfectedpersonistoahigh- lyinfectiousindividualspewingvirus while talking and how long the two peo- ple are in contact. I m m u n e competence relates to the body’s inherent protection againstCOVID-19.Unvaccinatedindi- viduals who’ve never been infected with the coronavirus have no protection – this is a complete- lynewvirusafter all – while fully va c c i n at e d peoplewillbe much more protected. According to the CDC, as of April 30, 2021, there had been a total of 10,262 known SARS-CoV-2 vac- cine breakthrough infections in US states and territo- ries. These are usually asymptomatic or only mildly symptomatic cases, and most don’t result in hospitalization. Break- through cases will continue to occur, and though these people are less like- ly to spread the coronavirus to others than are unvaccinated individuals, they still probably can. And what about the SARS-CoV-2 variants?Well,theworldhasbeenfor- tunate that the mRNA vaccines in particular afford significant protec- tion against all major variants that have emerged so far. But it is entirely possible that at some point a corona- virus strain could mutate and par- tially or fully escape the protection from vaccines. This is yet another good reason to get tested if you are feeling sick. As vaccination rates rise and dai- ly case counts fall in the US and other countries, it is also important to keep a close eye on the coronavi- rus. COVID-19 testing allows offi- cials to keep track of how much vi- rus is in a community, and positive test results can help people quaran- tine before unknowingly spreading the virus to others. So, yes, please get tested if you have concerning symptoms, even if you are fully vac- cinated. ARIF R SARWARI Physician,Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases, Chair of Department of Medicine, West Virginia University I’M FULLY VACCINATED BUT FEEL SICK – SHOULD I GET TESTED FOR COVID-19? Some people can still get sick after getting vaccinated for COVID-19. When a person gets fully vaccinated for novel coronavirus and still gets infected, it is termed a ‘breakthrough case’. —KAMIL KRAZACZYNSKI/AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES Both Moderna Pfizer vaccines have been over 90% effective in preventing hospitalization or death. —DADO RUVIC/REUTERS SOURCE: THECONVERSATION.COM I
