New Delhi: Poll strate-
gist Prashant Kishor,
popularly addressed to
as PK in political cir-
cles, on Tuesday de-
clined the Congress of-
fer to join the party and
evolve its poll strategy
and said more than
him, the party needs
leadership and collec-
tive will to fix deep-root-
ed structural problems
through transforma-
tional reforms.
Kishor was asked by
Congress president So-
nia Gandhi to join the
party and be a part of
the Empowered Action
Group-2024 and take
care of its election strat-
egy for upcoming polls.
Congress chief spokes-
person Randeep Sur-
jewala said Kishor has
declined the offer and
the party appreciates
his efforts and sugges-
tions. Kishor had made
a detailed presentation
before top Congress
leaders, which was dis-
cussed at length by sen-
ior leadership of the
party
, after which an of-
fer was made to him.
“ In my humble opin-

New Delhi: The Con-
gress Disciplinary
Committee on Tuesday
recommended the
suspension of its former
Punjab unit chief Sunil
Jakhar for two years and
his removal from all party
posts, besides recom-
mending removal of Ker-
ala leader K V Thomas
from all party positions
for anti-party activities.
Ahead of the Congress
disciplinary committee
meeting, Jakhar had
said those who still
have a conscience will
be punished. The panel
also recommended the
suspension of five party
MLAs in Meghalaya, who
had supported the ruling
Meghalaya Democratic
Alliance (MDA) in the
state, while defying the
party directives.
New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on
Tuesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi
over the unemployment issue, alleging over 45
crore people have lost hope of getting a job due to
his “masterstrokes”. He claimed that Modi is the
“first such prime minister” in 75 years to do so.
Informed sources in Congress have disclosed that PK wanted to lead the
Empowered Committee 2024, but Sonia wanted to make PK only a member of
the committee. Furthermore, PK wanted to report only to the Congress leader-
ship, but as a member he could not directly contact the high command. Prob-
ably because of all these reasons Kishor did not join the Congress. However,
the grapevine in ‘relevant’ party circles is that claim that Rahul and his team
were not too elated by PK’s entry in the party and in the meantime, the news of
Priyanka going on a foreign tour last night also acted as the final nail. In such
a situation, there was no consensus in the Gandhi family about PK, who, it is
learnt, had advised Gandhis to make an outsider as party president while also
advocating for change in Rajasthan.
New Delhi: Seventy per cent of the people who received
a booster dose of the Covid vaccine did not contract the
disease during the third wave, according to a new study
that covered around 6,000 people in India. The study said
that 45 per cent of the vaccinated people who did not take
a precautionary dose reported Covid in the third wave.
Renowned Virologist Dr T Jacob John has said that the prob-
ability of fourth Covid wave in India is ‘extremely low’. He
said that Delhi and Haryana had minor increases in Covid
numbers over the last two to three weeks but the increase
was not being sustained. He stressed that one thousand
cases in Delhi is equal to just five per lakh population.

crease of 11.45 lakh MT,

This March, the pro-
duction achieved was
9.10 lakh MT--the high-
est production achieved
during the month of
March over the last four
years.

highest at 25.07 lakh MT
in Q4 which is also the
highest production
achieved during simi-
lar comparable quarter
of past four years.

from operations stood
at Rs1,057 crore and
profit after tax stood at
Rs176 crore, with earn-
ings per share of Rs5.53.

Ahmedabad: Congress
party’s Chief Spokes-
person Manish Doshi
on Tuesday accused
Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) leaders of selling
land of a lake and also
plots allotted to retired
defence personnel in
Aloda village of
Mehsana district, for
Rs40 crore. He has de-
manded that a criminal
case be filed against
those responsible for
the land scam.
Addressing a press
conference, Doshi al-
leged, “When the land
was allotted to retired
Army jawans or offic-
ers in 1974, it was with
the condition that if the
land remained unused
for long, it would have
to be returned to the
government. In case,
anyone changed the use
of that land, the govern-
ment would have a valid
reason to reclaim it.”
The land was in new
tenure, as per the reve-
nue department’s re-
cords. However, BJP
leaders created fake
ownership documents
of the land and grabbed
it. A talati, who was de-
puted for just one day,
regularized the claims
made by the BJP lead-
ers, he added.
All original docu-
ments that made way
for fake documents that
were approved by dif-
ferent officers in the
year 2020 and 2021, are
missing from the reve-
nue record. On October
14, 2021, then Deputy
Collector MD Patel had
illegally converted the
land from new tenure to
old tenure. That record
is missing as well, as-
serted Doshi.
Meanwhile, the vil-
lage lake land was sold
under the grab of agri-
cultural land. To fill the
lake, an application was
submitted to the DRL
department. Though lo-
cal residents are angry
with this scam and mis-
use of the land, they are
frightened of BJP lead-
ers and have not raised
the issue, alleged the
spokesperson.

Ahmedabad: AAP na-
tional convenor Arvind
Kejriwal and Bharatiya
Tribal Party (BTP)
founder Chhotu Vasava
will jointly address a
tribal rally on May 1
near Valia in Bharuch
district, in the run-up to
the Gujarat Assembly
elections, which are due
in December this year.
Kejriwal will come to
Gujarat on May 1 and
meet Vasava at Chand-
eriya in Valia taluka,
AAP and BTP leaders
said on Tuesday
.
“Kejriwal and Vasava
will discuss issues of
common interest con-
cerning the tribal com-
munity before address-
ing ‘Adivasi Sankalp
Mahasammelan’,” state
Aam Aadmi Party
(AAP) president Gopal
Italia said.
BTP, founded by
Chhotu Vasava, had
contested the 2017 Guja-
rat elections on some
tribal-dominated seats
in alliance with Con-
gress and won two
seats.
However, the BTP
later distanced itself
from Congress. The
BTP founder and the
party national presi-
dent Mahesh Vasava
recently met Kejriwal
separately in Delhi.
The AAP is looking to
forge an alliance with
the BTP for the upcom-
ing polls in Gujarat, ac-
cording to sources.
“AAP chief Arvind
Kejriwal will visit Guja-
rat on May 1 on the state
Foundation Day
. He will
hold discussions with
Chhotubhai Vasava at
‘White House’ (the BTP
office) at Chanderiya.
Leaders of both the
BTP and the AAP will
attend the meeting, Ita-
lia said.
After the meeting,
the two leaders will
jointly address the ‘Adi-
vasi Sankalp Mahasam-
melan’ at 11 AM where
they will talk about the
issues discussed.
BTP president Ma-
hesh Vasava, brother of
Chhotu Vasava, told re-
porters at the joint
press conference that
the party is looking for
“a new start in its strug-
gle for the rights of trib-
als who have been failed
by both the BJP and the
Congress”.
“On Gujarat Founda-
tion Day, we will pre-
sent a roadmap for a
new Gujarat model. We
will provide the mes-
sage to all the tribal-
dominated districts and
states across the coun-
try,” he said.
BTP holds influence
in the districts of
Bharuch and Narmada
and the tribal pockets
of south and central
Gujarat.
In the 182-member
House, 27 seats are re-
served for Scheduled
Tribe (ST) candidates.
AAP is trying to project
itself as an alternative
to the already decimat-
ed Congress in Gujarat,
the traditional bastion

Ahmedabad: It is
perhaps for the first
time that a govern-

tal in India has had 11
patients in one month
alone, donating their
organs and saving
lives. The Ahmedabad
Civil Hospital has to
its credit 58 organ do-

Their last case was
that of a youth
brought for treatment
following a tragic
road accident.
Abdul Khalifa,
from Kutch, met with
a road accident. He
was brought to the
Civil Hospital for
treatment but was
soon declared brain-
dead by the doctors.
The State Organ and

Organization (SOT-

ily members and con-
vinced them to donate
Abdul’s organs. While
taking his body for re-
trieval, the doctors
prayed to the Hindu
gods while the youth’s
family read their
namaz during the
holy month of
Ramzan, thus, show-
ing unity in diversity
.
Civil hospital su-
perintendent Dr
Rakesh Joshi said, “It
is perhaps the first
time for any private
or government hospi-
tal to have carried out
11 cases of organ do-
nations in 25 days. In
the last 36 hours, the
hospital team has
carried out three cas-
es of organ donation.
In one month we do-
nated 19 kidneys, 10
livers, one pancreas,
two hearts, and four
lungs summing up to
a donation of 36 or-
gans. The hospital
has received 221 or-
gans from 58 patients
and has saved 159

Kadva Patidars want strict

Low sex ratio means men from the community find it hard to

have demanded a law
that discourages
youngsters from pur-
suing love marriages.
A working committee
meeting took place on
Sunday in Mehsana,
where office-bearers
and community mem-
bers discussed various
issues pertaining to
Patidars.
Expressing leaders’
wishes for legislation to
make it harder for peo-
ple to register love
matches, community

es, all castes in the com-
munity are facing a se-
vere shortage of brides
fortheirsons.Girls’elop-
ing with their lovers is
not good for the society
and so, the Patidar com-
munity will call a meet-
ing to raise the demand
for a special law.”
He further stated,
“Our demand is that the
stategovernmentshould
bring in changes in the
love marriage registra-
tion rules. They should
make it mandatory for a
woman’s parents to sign
the forms, without
which, the marriage
shouldnotberegistered.
If it is registered, then it
shouldbenullandvoid.”
Their second demand
is that if a love match is
disapproved by the
bride’s parents, the girl
orwomanwillautomati-
cally lose her rights over
her parental property
.
A community mem-
bertoldFirstIndia,“The
fear is a result of gender
ratio deficit in the com-
munity

girls is lower than boys,

.
They either remain
bachelors till middle age
or have to marry by pay-
ing dowry to the girls’
parents, who mostly be-
long to the tribal belt. As
if this was not enough,
Patidar girls’ inter-caste
love marriages are add-
ing fuel to the gender
deficit issue. That is why
they are demanding
stringent laws to keep it
in check.”

PRASHANT KISHOR
AND CONGRESS
COME CLOSE, BUT
CHOOSE TO PART
day after Congress
president Sonia Gan-
dhi formed an em-
powered action
group to take steps
for the party’s revival based on
the points made by poll strate-
gist Prashant Kishor the two
have parted company, though
not on a bitter note. Prashant
Kishor’s statement that he has
declined the Congress chief’s of-
fer to join the party has led to
finger-pointing at Rahul Gan-
dhi’s coterie. One would tend to
believe those who say that this
coterie does not want any
change which will weaken their
position in the Congress.
The point of friction could
have been the role which was of-
fered to PK as against what he
aspired for. Whatever may be the
reason, the star-crossed Con-
gress looks set to continue its
journey on the beaten track.
The party’s plan to hold a Nav
Chintan Shivir at Udaipur next
month for revival may prove to
be an exercise in futility given
the old guard’s penchant for sta-
tus quo. Who wants change?
A
lon Musk, who is
the new owner of
Twitter, has been
a strong advocate
of free speech on
the social media platform. A
month before making his hos-

an all-cash deal, Musk con-
ducted his own poll tweeting,
“Free speech is essential for
democracy
. Do you believe
Twitter rigorously adheres to
this principle?” Of the
2,035,924 votes polled, 70.4 per-
cent said “No”. The Tesla and
SpaceX boss describes him-
self as a “free-speech absolut-
ist”. Although he is known to
have blocked some of his crit-
ics on Twitter, Musk said in
another tweet, “I hope my

ter, because that is what free
speechmeans.”Inyetanother

and Twitter is the digital
town square where matters
vital to the future of human-
ity are debated…”
All that sounds like wish-
ful thinking. Democracies
around the world, including
India, are reluctant to allow
absolute freedom of speech
even though it is guaranteed
in the Constitution. Govern-
ment, though biased in quite
a few cases, keeps an eye on
hate and provocative mes-

E
AAP goes full throttle,
makes forays across nation
f the recently held bypolls in
WB are any indication for the
prospects of the Grand Old
Party… it may be noted that
the party’s fortunes are turn-
ing out to be the same across
the length and breadth of the
country
.
In the Guwahati Munici-
pal Corporation elections,
BJP and its ally Asom Gana
Parishad (AGP) on Sunday
swept elections winning 58 of
the total 60 wards, while the
principal opposition party
Congress drew a blank!
The other 2 seats were
shared by debutant AAP and
the Assam Jatiya Party
(AJP). It is not difficult to
gauge the matter of the fact
that the Congress’ stature of
the principal Opposition par-
ty has been dwindling at jet
speed and it may not be per-
haps wrong to say that the
Old Order has Changeth…!
The buoyed AAP has been
seen to open its account even
in as far as Assam especially
at a time when even regional
parties like Trinamool have
not been able to create a rip-
ple in states like Tripura not-
withstanding its giant stat-
ure in WB.
AAP has already made for-
ays into several frontiers of
the country
. The party has
started its groundwork for the
KarnatakaAssemblyelections
due in the first half of 2023.
Even as the ruling BJP and
the “opposition” Congress
are preparing for the ballot
battle in Karnataka, the AAP
smells opportunity in the
southern state. AAP’s state
convener, Karnataka, Prithvi
Reddy recently told the me-
dia that people of the state
will have a real alternative
after a long time.
While AAP will continue
banking on the party’s win-
ning formula of focusing on
providing basic necessities
for people to live in dignity,
Reddy said adding that a Kar-
nataka plan is also in place.
THE HIMACHAL STORY
Since Himachal Pradesh and
Punjab are neighbouring
states, many believe the AAP
could “vroom” in Himachal
as it did Punjab. But political
observers with an eye on
Himachal’s politics have a
different script to narrate.
The Ground Reality of
Himachal is a trifle different.
Himachal has traditional-
ly been a two-party state,
with the Congress and the
BJP at the helm. Several po-
litical parties in the past
tried their luck in Himachal
but have never succeeded.
In Punjab, what mainly
wentinfavourof AAPwasthe
existing political forces’ dis-
connect with the masses. The
larger than life political netas
were too far from reality liter-
ally for the aam aadmi and it
was here that the AAP scored
with its grassroots connect.
In Himachal, leaders are
just like next door neigh-
bours. They are so closely
connected with the fabric of
their constituency that they
know each family and attend
their weddings, funerals etc
and all social events.
Himachal is well placed in
most social development pa-
rameters. At nearly 83% lit-
eracy rate (2011 Census), it is
one of the most literate states
in the country. It has also
done well in improving pri-
mary healthcare. Despite its
topography, Himachal has a
hundred per cent electrifica-
tion and a good road network.
ROAD TO GUJARAT
With a massive roadshow in
Ahmedabad on April 2, AAP
declared its next major goal
after winning Punjab — chal-
lenging the BJP and the Con-
gress in Gujarat and consoli-
dating itself as the third
power in what has histori-
cally been (again like in
Himachal) a two-party state.
The AAP’s plans (for the
state) were apparent in the
closed-door meetings that the
party’s national convener
and Delhi CM Arvind Kejri-
wal held with key social and
political leaders. On March
27, Kejriwal met BTP leader
and Dediapada MLA Mahesh
Vasava. The party, which has
two MLAs at present, is like-
ly to ally with the AAP for the
Assembly elections.
AAP’s PAST TENSE
AAP’s Gujarat unit was set
up in 2013 but it got its first
state president 4 years later
in 2017 when 79-year-old re-
tired mathematics professor
Kishore Desai was appoint-
ed. It contested 29 of the 182
Assembly seats and bagged
votes even less than the
NOTA option in some con-
stituencies. The party rejiged
its state organisation in 2020.
So, the Congress must real-
ise the state of affairs and it
is evident from the AAP’s ef-
forts which slow but steady,
that the party is inching
ahead to capture the Grand
Old Party’s position as the
principal Opposition.

THE BJP CONNECT
The BJP’s national president
Jagat Prakash Nadda hails
from Himachal. Congress also
has a reasonably good presence
there. However, the dismal state
of the Grand Old Party in the rest
of the country could be worrying
for it. AAP will have to work on a
sound and credible roadmap here
that is unique to the Himachal
needs, which would be its USP.
In Punjab, Congress ruled
for 26 years, Akali Dal for
24 and the people of Punjab
felt let down. I think the
situation is very similar in
Karnataka. Now that they
will have a real alternative,
I think Karnataka will
vote in one way.

convener, Karnataka

New Delhi: In Bihar,
preparations are being
made for a change in the
BJP organization amid
speculation that all is
not well between BJP
and JDU. Words is that
Chief Minister Nitish
Kumar would leave Bi-
har politics and head to
Delhi. The present or-
ganization of the party
is not working properly
which is evident in the
NDA’s performance
which was poor in the
recently held elections
to the 24 Legislative
Council seats in the
state. BJP lost many of
its seats, due to mutual
factionalism. After that
the BJP lost badly in the
by-electiononBochahan
seat as well. Since then
the demand for change
in the state organisation
has intensified.
According to in-
formed sources, BJP
state president Sanjay
Jaiswal can be replaced.
It is being told that the
BJP will make an upper
caste individual the
state president. The bot-
tom line of the review
after the defeat of the
Legislative Council and
Bochahan is that the
party has become too
backward-centred, an-
gering the core voters,
the upper castes. Keep
in mind that the BJP
StatePresidentandboth
the Deputy Chief Minis-
ters come from back-
ward castes. Nityanand
Rai is sitting in the most
important ministry at
the center, he also be-
longs to the backward
caste and the in-charge
is also from the back-
ward caste. That is why
it is being said that now
a leader from the upper
caste strata will be made
the state president and
according to sources in
the BJP, a change may
happen soon.
Will BJP fall back on ‘core voters’?

In her letter to LS

TMC-BJP SLUGFEST: WHICH
SIDE DOES ANSAR BELONG TO?
The TMC and BJP are now in a war of words over the
origin of Ansar Sheikh, prime accused in the Jahan-
girpuri clashes. BJP’s Amit Malviya has said Ansar
is one of those who had attacked Suvendu Adhikari,
leader of the opposition in West Bengal, in 2021.
Meanwhile, a photo of Ansar with Ajijul Rehman, a
local TMC councillor, has been doing the rounds on
the social media. TMC’s Ajijul Rehman, however, de-
nied the allegations of him being connected to Ansar.
He accepted that he had met Ansar during his trip to
Manali. “It was a spontaneous photo,” he said.

such assumptions;

take the decision.

decision, I will

New Delhi: The politi-
cal parties of India use
their internal surveys
for their electoral and
organisational deci-
sions. Apart from this,
there are surveys of
media groups and sur-
vey agencies, which
reveal the popularity
of parties and leaders.
But distanced from
these is the Aam Aad-
mi Party (AAP) has its
own model of survey
wherein the party it-
self conducts the sur-
vey and declares it for
her political purpose.
Like AAP has just an-
nounced a survey
again. This was an-
nounced by the party’s
Kalkaji MLA Atishi.
This survey will be
done across the coun-
try, in which people’s
opinion about the par-
ty will be asked. Along
with this, opinion
about BJP will also be
sought. Through this,
the aim of the Aam
Aadmi Party is to mark
itself better than the
BJP, which will be evi-
dent from this survey
.
Everyone knows the
results as soon as the
survey starts. Every-
one knows that after
this alleged survey, it
will be announced by
AAP that the people of
the country like AAP
instead of BJP and the
model of AAP govern-
ments is better than
BJP governments.
Even before this, the
Aam Aadmi Party has
conducted countless
surveys, in which it
wins every time. After
every survey comes the
desired results of the
party leadership. It is
being told that this is
the beginning of the
party’s positioning for
pan-India politics. In
fact, questions have
been raised about
Arvind Kejriwal’s si-
lence in the midst of
communal riots and
hate speeches happen-
ing across the country
.
Interestingly, political
observers feel that this
survey has been an-
nounced to divert at-
tention from Kejriwal.

New Delhi (Agen-
cies): India has
bought more than
twice as much crude
oil from Russia in the
two months since its
invasion of Ukraine
as it did in the whole
of 2021, according to
calculations, as Indi-
an refiners snapped
up discounted oil that
others have shunned.
Refiners in India
have placed orders for
at least 40 million bar-
rels of Russian oil
since the invasion on
Feb. 24, Reuters calcu-
lations based on infor-
mation from crude
tenders and traders
show.
The purchases are
for loading in the June
quarter. That com-
pares with total im-
ports of Russian oil
into India of 16 million
barrels in the whole of
last year, according to
Reuters calculations.
The world’s third
biggest oil importer
and consumer ships in
over 85% of its crude
oil needs of 5 million
barrels per day (bpd).
Its refiners are buying
cheaper Russian oil to
partly offset the im-
pact of higher official
selling prices of some
producers like Saudi
Arabia, company
sources said. “We try
to insulate consumers
as much from price
shocks as we can, but
we need to protect our
profits as well... so we
are buying Russian
oil,” an official at one
refiner, who declined
to be named, said.
According to Reu-
ters calculations, pur-
chases of Russian bar-
rels by private refin-
ers Reliance Indus-
tries and Nayara En-
ergy outstrip imports
by state refiners Indi-
an Oil Corp, Hindu-

RBI to hike repo
rate in June, earlier
than predicted: Poll
New Delhi (Agencies):
The Reserve Bank of
India will raise its repo
rate in June and hike at
a faster pace than pre-
dicted just a few weeks
ago as a surge in infla-
tion puts pressure on
the central bank to act
quicker, a poll showed
on Tuesday
.
Retail inflation accel-
erated to nearly 7 per
cent in March, above
the 6 per cent upper
limit of the central
bank’s targeted range,
and will likely soar fur-
ther as a spike in global
energy prices since Rus-
sia’s invasion of
Ukraine seeps into con-
sumer prices.
The Monetary Policy
Committee (MPC) kept
its key rate at a record
low 4.0 per cent at its
April meeting despite
shifting its focus to in-
flation from growth.
But March’s 17-month-
high inflation number
leaves little room for
the RBI other than hik-
ing sooner rather than
later, and all but three
of 46 economists in an
April 20-25 Reuters poll
expected the RBI to
raise the repo rate for
the first time since 2018
in June. While 42 ex-
pected a 25 basis point
hike to 4.25 per cent,
only one predicted a 50
basis point hike.
Palm oil imports
on track despite
Indonesia's
curbs:Traders
Mumbai (Agen-
cies): India’s palm
oil imports in May
are set to rise above
600,000 tonnes de-
spite the restriction
imposed by Indone-
sia on exports as
most of the con-
tracted quantity
will be loaded before
Jakarta’s ban be-
comes effective,
traders.
The world’s big-
gest palm oil export-
er plans from Thurs-
day to stop ship-
ments of refined,
bleached and deo-
dorized (RBD) palm
olein but will allow
exports of crude
palm oil (CPO) or
other derivative
products. The ban
could dent India’s
imports in June as
refiners are strug-
gling to secure sup-
plies from Malaysia,
traders said. India is
the world’s biggest
importer of palm
oil.

Services’ victory over
Odisha earlier in the
day had upset the com-
fortable apple cart that
was this group. The
math, leading into this
final group stage game
was simple. Karnataka
neededtowinbyathree-
goal margin to go
through.
In the 12th minute,
Karnataka had the lead,
Sudheer Kotikela pick-
ing up a brilliantly
played through ball
from midfield, driving
into the box from the
right, and unleashing a
perfect finish into the
bottom far corner.
In the 28th, P Kama-
lesh collected a square
pass from D Arun Ku-
mar at the edge of the
Gujarat area, switched
feet, cutting past Har-
shil Parekh and Mu-
hammed Sagar Ali as if
they weren’t even there,
before opening up his
body and curling for the
right corner of the goal.
His shot was perfect,
and the finish glorious.
Karnataka were two to
the good.
Within minutes, they
had their crucial third.
Prashanth Kalinga ran
into space on the right
and curled a superb
cross into a dangerous

Despite being sand-
wiched by two defend-
ers, Kotikela, five yards
from goal, sent a first
time finish into the net.
His team were in rap-
tures. And on a ram-
page. Suddenly, with
just half an hour gone,
Karnataka was dream-
ing of the semi-finals.
Gujarat came out for
the second half with a
little more urgency
. But
right on the hour mark,
a cross from D Arun Ku-
mar on the left dropped
the ball perfectly to Ma-
gesh Selva in the box.

They stayed there for
the remaining third of
the game, controlling
possession brilliantly,
creating chances and
threatening to score
more, all the while keep-
ing Gujarat at safe dis-
tance. At the referee’s
final whistle it was jubi-
lation, in the stands and
on the pitch.

First India Bureau
Ahmedabad: Two
men from Rajasthan
were arrested on
Tuesday for alleged
possession of me-
phedrone worth
over Rs23 lakh in
Ahmedabad city, an
official said.
A team of the spe-
cial operations group
(SOG) arrested the
duo from Odhav local-
ity of the city with
238.4 gm of mephed-
rone, worth Rs 23.8
lakh, he said.
Mahesh and
Lalshankar, both na-
tives of Dungarpur in
Rajasthan, were ar-
rested while they were
trying to deliver the
contraband, the offi-
cial said. The man
who supplied the
banned drug for deliv-
ery has been named as
a wanted accused in
the case, he said.
“The accused are
primarily farmers
who were drawn into
it for money. The pri-
mary investigation
has revealed that the
duo was promised Rs 2
lakh to deliver the
contraband,” the offi-
cial said.
A case under the
Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Sub-
stances (NDPS) Act
has been registered,
and further investiga-
tion was underway to
identify the receiver,
he added.
The seizure comes a
day after the Gujarat
Anti-Terrorism Squad
(ATS) and the Indian
Coast Guard in a joint
operation caught a
boat from Pakistan
with a consignment
of heroin worth Rs
280 crore.

Himmatnagar: The
crime branch of Sa-
barkantha police has
busted a gang in-
volved in allegedly
duping people with a
promise of hidden
treasure by selling
them ‘magic chash-
ma’ (magic eyewear).
According to police,
the gang members
would lure probable
customers by telling
tales of the ‘magic
eyewear’. They also
claimed that the eye-
wear would help
them see through the
soil and find hidden
treasures.
Two of the arrested
five member-gang Nat-
varsinh Damor and
Nidhraj Meena used to
procure tinted glasses
from Delhi and later fix
them in golden frames,
giving them a ‘magic
eyewear’ look and sell-
ing them to gullible
people. Police inspec-
tor MD Champavat said
that gang members
would invite the gulli-
ble customers to a
place, make them sit
with a checker who
would convince them
that the eyewear is
real, and then the cus-
tomer would pay for a
new pair of glasses.
They have created a
Himmatnagar busi-
nessman of Rs5.20 lakh.
From the five arrested,
police have recovered
Rs2.70 lakh cash, a car,
mobile phones, the
‘magic eyewear’ specta-
cles and other belong-
ings. A further investi-

.
The IPL newcomers
are currently in the
midst of a dream incep-
tion year with six wins
from seven games at the
halfway stage and are
placed on top of the ta-
ble.
Interestingly, the
only loss that Titans
suffered in their cam-
paign so far was against
Sunrisers in an earlier
meeting and Hardik
Pandya wouldn’t mind
sweet revenge.
However, the Orange
Army’s bowling attack
especially their four-
prong fast bowling unit
has been exceptional as
one saw when they de-
molished RCB for 68 in
their previous encoun-
ter.
The disconcerting
bounce and movement
created by Marco Jans-
en (6 wickets from 5
games) is ably comple-
mented by Umran’s (10
wickets from 7 games)
fiery pace, T Natara-
jan’s (15 from 7 games)
deceptions off the track
and Bhuvneshwar Ku-
mar (9 from 7 games)
balancing it all with his
experience.
So much so that a
lightweight spin de-
partment manned by
left-arm spinner
Jagadeesha Suchith in
absence of an injured
Washington Sundar, till
now hasn’t been a cause
of worry for Kane Wil-
liamson and his band of
men.
In fact, the rub of the
green has gone SRH’s
way in this particular
season as they now have
five consecutive wins
from five games where
they have chased tar-
gets after the bowlers
intimidated the rival
batting unit.
For Pandya though,
his bowling unit is no
inferior to SRH as Mo-
hammed Shami’s art-
istry (10 from 7 games)
and Ferguson’s (9 wick-
ets from 7 games) ag-
gression has brought
them a lot of success,
not to forget Rashid
Khan’s (8 wickets from
7 games) ability to be
more than decent even
in a quiet year by his
standards.
Titans’ bowling at-
tack has the ability to
catch the SRH batting
unit off-guard consider-
ing that it hasn’t been
tested a lot with young
Abhishek Sharma (220
in 7 games) and No.3
batter Rahul Tripathi
(212 from 7 games) do-
ing the bulk of the scor-
ing in easy chases.
If Titans could
breach through the
Sunrisers top-order,
most of the middle-or-
der batters including
the dangerous Nicholas
Pooran haven’t yet got a
decent hit in the middle
and the rustiness under
pressure could keep Ti-
tans interested.
If they manage to up-
set SRH’s rhythm, it
will take them closer to
play-offs in their maid-
en year in the champi-
onship, no mean
achievement in a com-
petition of this class.

Komalika (name

dent, was returning
home after school on
April 23, when Vishal
and Kisan grabbed her.
They took her to an iso-
lated place and raped
her. The duo then
dropped her off near
her residence and fled
the spot. On reaching
home, the minor in-
formed her mother
about the crime, follow-
ing which, she was beat
up with a plastic pipe.
On April 24, when her
landlord saw her weep-
ingoutsidethehouse,he
inquired about the rea-
son. After hearing her
plight, he took her to
social activist Mustaq
Belim, and they both ac-
companied her to Ku-
vadva police station.
Police Inspector Bhar-
gav Jankat registered a
complaint and swung
into action and arrested
both accused.
According to the vic-
tim, her mother did not
act against the accused
because they are friends
of Alpesh with whom
she is having an affair.
The minor has under-
gone a medical exam.
Instead of reporting the crime, 11-year-old’s mother and her lover beat
up the child and attempted to swear her to secrecy about her ordeal

In this vein, one of Man-
jamma’s unique dance
forms is where she places

last 40 years, Manjamma is
in the profession of folk
dancing.
People fondly call her
‘Amma’. Always a big red

developing and conserving
Jogati Padya (singing), nir-
tya (dance) forms and
brought in various non-

in the performing arts. To-
day many Jogati communi-
ties are learning and are
giving stage performances
of the art form all over In-
dia. In 2010, Manjamma
received the Rajyotsava
Award from the Karnataka
Government.
Born in a middle-class
family in Karnataka’s
Kallkamba village near
Bellari district on May
20th, 1957 Manjunatha
Shetty aka Manjamma was
one of the blessed children
out of the 21 siblings. But
among those children, only
four survived. Amma’s
voice Vikram B.K. an engi-
neer by profession and a
contemporary dancer con-
nected with Amma in 2017.
He told a detailed story
of Amma to me and said,
“Manjunatha studied till
class 10th. With a male
body but a woman from
deep inside, Manjunatha
was inclined towards girly
stuff and activities since
childhood. He got bullied
quite a lot by other chil-
dren. He loved to wear her
mother’s sarees at home
and helped her mother
with daily kitchen chores.
His father and brother
were entirely against Man-
junatha’s behaviour.”
Feeling isolated and
ignored by her family
Manjamma tried to take
poison but the almighty
had different plans for
her. At the young age of
18 yrs. through proper
rituals, Manjunatha was
adopted into the culture
of Jogati life.
From here Manjunatha
became Manjamma and
left the house. She was sur-
viving in a very difficult
situation by begging on the
streets. During this time,
she got
molest-
ed by
four men.
This inci-
dent shook
her inside
and she tried to
finish her life. But
with a life-changing
thought, she stood up
again and decided that she
will never let down herself.
Then onwards Amma
started selling idlis and
taking tuition classes.
In Devanagari town
where Amma was living
saw a father-son duo. Son
was dancing and father
was singing with a special
instrument. Amma with
enthusiasm showed inter-
est to learn this art form
and joined them. A trans
woman ‘Kaalavva Jogati’
approached Amma and
asked her to join their
group of artists transwom-
en as they wanted some ac-
tive members in the group
to perform and do street
plays/dance with them.
Amma agreed and started
contributing her acting
skills to their play and
learned the group’s dance
form as well. Since then
Amma never looked back
and after Kaalavva’s death,
her legacy Amma is taken
forward.
One fine day while going
for a performance Amma
was sitting with Vikram at
the Bangalore airport and
surprisingly shared some-
thing interesting with him
and said, “Vikram, it is dif-
ficult to accept that four
Idlis that I used to sell in
1 rupee today the same
idlis cost so expensive
today, i.e., One plate
with two idlis costs
Rs. 200/-. Time is
changing so rapidly
.”
In the end, with a
heavy heart, Amma
stated to me, “It’s an
irony that we are living
an isolated life. People
have a fear to mingle with
us. Despite getting the le-
gal rights from the govern-
ment, a society with a
changed mindset needs to
accept us all. There is still
a lot more things that
needs to be done.”

Kishor was asked by Congress president So- nia Gandhi to join the party and be a part of the Empowered Action Group-2024 and take care of its election strat- egy for upcoming polls. Congress chief spokes- person Randeep Sur- jewala said Kishor has declined the offer and the party appreciates his efforts and sugges- tions. Kishor had made a detailed presentation before top Congress leaders, which was dis- cussed at length by sen- ior leadership of the party , after which an of- fer was made to him. “ In my humble opin- ion, more than me the party needs leadership and collective will to fix the deep rooted struc- tural problems through transformational re- forms,” Kishor said in a tweet. CONG REMOVES JAKHAR AND THOMAS FROM ALL PARTY POSTS 45 CR LOST HOPE DUE TO MODI’S “MASTERSTROKES’’: RAHUL GANDHI DID PK ASK FOR MORE THAN HE COULD CHEW? 70% PEOPLE WHO TOOK BOOSTER DOSE DIDN’T GET COVID: STUDY PROBABILITY OF 4TH WAVE EXTREMELY LOW, VIROLOGIST JACOB JOHN New Delhi: The Con- gress Disciplinary Committee on Tuesday recommended the suspension of its former Punjab unit chief Sunil Jakhar for two years and his removal from all party posts, besides recom- mending removal of Ker- ala leader K V Thomas from all party positions for anti-party activities. Ahead of the Congress disciplinary committee meeting, Jakhar had said those who still have a conscience will be punished. The panel also recommended the suspension of five party MLAs in Meghalaya, who had supported the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) in the state, while defying the party directives. New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the unemployment issue, alleging over 45 crore people have lost hope of getting a job due to his “masterstrokes”. He claimed that Modi is the “first such prime minister” in 75 years to do so. Informed sources in Congress have disclosed that PK wanted to lead the Empowered Committee 2024, but Sonia wanted to make PK only a member of the committee. Furthermore, PK wanted to report only to the Congress leader- ship, but as a member he could not directly contact the high command. Prob- ably because of all these reasons Kishor did not join the Congress. However, the grapevine in ‘relevant’ party circles is that claim that Rahul and his team were not too elated by PK’s entry in the party and in the meantime, the news of Priyanka going on a foreign tour last night also acted as the final nail. In such a situation, there was no consensus in the Gandhi family about PK, who, it is learnt, had advised Gandhis to make an outsider as party president while also advocating for change in Rajasthan. New Delhi: Seventy per cent of the people who received a booster dose of the Covid vaccine did not contract the disease during the third wave, according to a new study that covered around 6,000 people in India. The study said that 45 per cent of the vaccinated people who did not take a precautionary dose reported Covid in the third wave. Renowned Virologist Dr T Jacob John has said that the prob- ability of fourth Covid wave in India is ‘extremely low’. He said that Delhi and Haryana had minor increases in Covid numbers over the last two to three weeks but the increase was not being sustained. He stressed that one thousand cases in Delhi is equal to just five per lakh population. Kids over 5 now under Covid vax umbrella! DCGI allows Corbevax for kids aged 5-12, Covaxin for 6-12 age group, in major relief to parents New Delhi:India’sdrug regulator has granted emergency use authori- sation for Biological E’s COVID-19 vaccine Cor- bevax for those aged five to 12 years and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin for children in the age group of six to 12 years, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Tuesday . RAM NAVAMI VIOLENCE SC junks plea seeking setting up of judicial commission New Delhi: The Su- preme Court on Tues- day junked a PIL seek- ing setting up of a judi- cial commission to in- quire into the recent communal violence in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri andinsevenotherstates during Ram Navami. A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and B R Gavai dismissed the plea filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari. “You want inquiry to be headed by former CJI? Is anybody free? Find out...What kind of re- lief is this...Don’t ask for such reliefs which can’t be granted by this court. Dismissed,” the bench said. 108 ex-bureaucrats request PM to call for end to ‘politics of hate’ New Delhi: Over 100 former civil servants have written to PM Narendra Modi with the hope that he will call for an end to what they termed as “poli- tics of hate” allegedly practised “assiduous- ly” by governments un- der BJP’s control. In an open letter, they said “we are witnessing a frenzy of hate filled destruction in the coun- try where at the sacrifi- cial altar are not just Muslims and members of the other minority communities but the Constitution itself”. Former Lt Governor of Delhi Najeeb Jung, former NSA Shivs- hankar Menon and for- mer prime minister ManmohanSingh’sprin- cipal secretary T K A Nair are among the 108 signatories to the letter. “Your silence, in the face of this enormous societal threat, is deaf- ening,” the letter said. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with Chief Ministers on the emerging COVID-19 situation in the country on Wednesday through video conferencing. Are Sonia Gandhi,Priyanka on long holiday, asks Anurag on Dausa gangrape-murder New Delhi (PTI): Hit- ting out at the Con- gress govt over Dausa gang-rape and murder, Union minister Anur- ag Thakur on Tuesday said whether Con- gress president Sonia Gandhi and party gen- eral sec Priyanka Gan- dhi Vadra have gone on a long holiday. Meanwhile, the Dausa police arrested second accused in the case on Tuesday . “Atrocities on children, women are on the rise in Rajasthan and questions are raised about gov- ernance in the state. I wonder whether Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi too have gone on a long holiday as Ra- hul ji? Can’t they see the breakdown of law and order in Ra- jasthan?,” T h a k u r t o l d reporters when asked about the incident of gang-rape and murder in Dausa, Rajasthan. “Why has the Con- gress party and Raj govt remained a mute spectator? I hope they will take these things seriously and the Raj govt, which is fast asleep, will wake up,” he said. It is a compassionate and ameliorative legisla- tion,” the MHA annual report for 2020-21 said. Chandigarh: Opposi- tion parties in Punjab on Tuesday slammed Chief Minister Bhag- want Mann for signing a knowledge-sharing agreement with his Del- hi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of surrendering his au- thority and institution- alising interference in the border state. An agreement was signed on Tuesday be- tween the two chief ministers with Mann saying that 117 schools and mohalla clinics will be developed in Punjab. Congress lead- er Partap Bajwa termed it complete ab- rogation of responsi- bility on behalf of the state government Elgar Parishad case: HC rejects Navlakha’s plea for house arrest Mumbai: The Bombay high court on Tuesday dismissed the petition filed by human rights activist Gautam Nav- lakha, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Bhima Koregaon violence case, seeking to be placed un- der house arrest due to his failing health and lack of proper medical facilities in Taloja jail. Navlakha, arrested on August 28, 2018, from his residence in New Delhi, had moved the petition through advocates Yug Chaudhry and Payoshi Roy claiming relief on the grounds of his ad- vanced age and the fact that he had a lump in his chest.

In 2021-22, lignite pro- duction at Bhavnagar mines achieved was 16.37 lakh MT, an in- crease of 11.45 lakh MT, as against 4.92 Lakh MT in 2020-21. This March, the pro- duction achieved was 9.10 lakh MT--the high- est production achieved during the month of March over the last four years. The production stood highest at 25.07 lakh MT in Q4 which is also the highest production achieved during simi- lar comparable quarter of past four years. The firm’s revenue from operations stood at Rs1,057 crore and profit after tax stood at Rs176 crore, with earn- ings per share of Rs5.53. Its total income stood at Rs2,888 crore in FY22 as against Rs 1,494 crore in FY21. Revenues from opera- tions was reported at Rs2,732 crore as com- pared to Rs1,343 crore in FY21. Over the next few years, our focus will be to realise more and more world- class value-added prod- ucts using the latest technology and equip- ment. We have part- nered with Boston Con- sulting Group (BCG) for strategic transforma- tion; McKinsey Co. for the development of REE Assets; AT Kear- ney for the transforma- tion of Thermal Power Project, and Deloitte to fast-track the six new lignite mining pro- jects.” First India Bureau Ahmedabad: Congress party’s Chief Spokes- person Manish Doshi on Tuesday accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders of selling land of a lake and also plots allotted to retired defence personnel in Aloda village of Mehsana district, for Rs40 crore. He has de- manded that a criminal case be filed against those responsible for the land scam. Addressing a press conference, Doshi al- leged, “When the land was allotted to retired Army jawans or offic- ers in 1974, it was with the condition that if the land remained unused for long, it would have to be returned to the government. In case, anyone changed the use of that land, the govern- ment would have a valid reason to reclaim it.” The land was in new tenure, as per the reve- nue department’s re- cords. However, BJP leaders created fake ownership documents of the land and grabbed it. A talati, who was de- puted for just one day, regularized the claims made by the BJP lead- ers, he added. All original docu- ments that made way for fake documents that were approved by dif- ferent officers in the year 2020 and 2021, are missing from the reve- nue record. On October 14, 2021, then Deputy Collector MD Patel had illegally converted the land from new tenure to old tenure. That record is missing as well, as- serted Doshi. Meanwhile, the vil- lage lake land was sold under the grab of agri- cultural land. To fill the lake, an application was submitted to the DRL department. Though lo- cal residents are angry with this scam and mis- use of the land, they are frightened of BJP lead- ers and have not raised the issue, alleged the spokesperson. First India Bureau Ahmedabad: AAP na- tional convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) founder Chhotu Vasava will jointly address a tribal rally on May 1 near Valia in Bharuch district, in the run-up to the Gujarat Assembly elections, which are due in December this year. Kejriwal will come to Gujarat on May 1 and meet Vasava at Chand- eriya in Valia taluka, AAP and BTP leaders said on Tuesday . “Kejriwal and Vasava will discuss issues of common interest con- cerning the tribal com- munity before address- ing ‘Adivasi Sankalp Mahasammelan’,” state Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) president Gopal Italia said. BTP, founded by Chhotu Vasava, had contested the 2017 Guja- rat elections on some tribal-dominated seats in alliance with Con- gress and won two seats. However, the BTP later distanced itself from Congress. The BTP founder and the party national presi- dent Mahesh Vasava recently met Kejriwal separately in Delhi. The AAP is looking to forge an alliance with the BTP for the upcom- ing polls in Gujarat, ac- cording to sources. “AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal will visit Guja- rat on May 1 on the state Foundation Day . He will hold discussions with Chhotubhai Vasava at ‘White House’ (the BTP office) at Chanderiya. Leaders of both the BTP and the AAP will attend the meeting, Ita- lia said. After the meeting, the two leaders will jointly address the ‘Adi- vasi Sankalp Mahasam- melan’ at 11 AM where they will talk about the issues discussed. BTP president Ma- hesh Vasava, brother of Chhotu Vasava, told re- porters at the joint press conference that the party is looking for “a new start in its strug- gle for the rights of trib- als who have been failed by both the BJP and the Congress”. “On Gujarat Founda- tion Day, we will pre- sent a roadmap for a new Gujarat model. We will provide the mes- sage to all the tribal- dominated districts and states across the coun- try,” he said. BTP holds influence in the districts of Bharuch and Narmada and the tribal pockets of south and central Gujarat. In the 182-member House, 27 seats are re- served for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates. AAP is trying to project itself as an alternative to the already decimat- ed Congress in Gujarat, the traditional bastion of BJP and the home state of PM Modi. First India Bureau Vadodara: Rajeshwari Singh from Vadodara has been working tire- lessly for years to raise awareness against the use of plastics that pol- lute the environment. She finally launched an e-commerce market- place called zeroite. com, a one-of-its-kind initiative. Here, the buyers can order sus- tainable, plastic-free products from any- where and get them de- livered to their doorstep without using plastics or other materials, which prove dangerous to the environment. It is India's first eco- friendly e-commerce website to sell organic products, paraben-free, chemical-free products and foodstuffs. Through zeroite.com they are connecting with the farmers, small busi- nesses and women arti- sans intending to give them a platform and help their eco-friendly products reach the masses. The online store was launched by the global citizen Maa Anand Sheela, former Spokes- person of the Rajneesh Movement and the UNEP recognised Envi- ronmentalist. Zeroite will be an online ecosystem con- necting all small busi- nesses to big manufac- turers present in India to sell their products which are eco-friendly and sustainable. It also plans to create green transportation and packaging as much as possible. We also launched a recycling station outside our place where people can get cash vouchers in re- turn for the waste. First India Bureau Ahmedabad: It is perhaps for the first time that a govern- ment or private hospi- tal in India has had 11 patients in one month alone, donating their organs and saving lives. The Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has to its credit 58 organ do- nation cases so far. Their last case was that of a youth brought for treatment following a tragic road accident. Abdul Khalifa, from Kutch, met with a road accident. He was brought to the Civil Hospital for treatment but was soon declared brain- dead by the doctors. The State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOT- TO) team met the fam- ily members and con- vinced them to donate Abdul’s organs. While taking his body for re- trieval, the doctors prayed to the Hindu gods while the youth’s family read their namaz during the holy month of Ramzan, thus, show- ing unity in diversity . Civil hospital su- perintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi said, “It is perhaps the first time for any private or government hospi- tal to have carried out 11 cases of organ do- nations in 25 days. In the last 36 hours, the hospital team has carried out three cas- es of organ donation. In one month we do- nated 19 kidneys, 10 livers, one pancreas, two hearts, and four lungs summing up to a donation of 36 or- gans. The hospital has received 221 or- gans from 58 patients and has saved 159 lives.” BRAIN-DEAD YOUTH’S ORGANS DONATED —FILE PHOTO HOT WEATHER With the maximum temperature in Ahmedabad hovering between 42 degree Celsius and 44 degree Celsius, the Vastrapur Lake has dried up almost completely. —PHOTO BY HANIF SINDHI Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has been instrumental in convincing families of 11 patients to donate organs of their loved ones Map of the village where lake land has been sold. A working committee meeting took place on Sunday in Mehsana, where office-bearers and community mem- bers discussed various issues pertaining to Patidars. There are no gardens or libraries in our area, and we will protest, till our demands are heard and imple- mented.” MLA Kamaraj said of the three plots, this one was finalized, but SMC was yet to take a final call. Gujarat logs 19 new COVID-19 cases, active tally now 99 Post clashes, demolition drive begins in riot-hit Himmatnagar First India Bureau Himmatnagar: Civic authorities have start- ed a demolition drive against illegal struc- tures in Sabarkan- tha’s Himmatnagar, where a communal clash had broken out during the Ram Nava- mi celebration earlier this month. Bulldozers were be- ing used to remove en- croachments in Chhapariya locality of Himmatnagar , officials said on Tuesday . “The municipality has started carrying out demolition in Chhapariya locality, which is close to where the communal clash had erupted on Ram Na- vami. Adequate securi- ty has been deployed in the area,” Superinten- dent of Police Vishal Vaghela said. A communal clash had broken out near Chhapariya area dur- ing a Ram Navami pro- cession on April 10, when members from two communities re- sorted to pelting stones, leaving some people in- jured. Some vehicles were also set on fire during the clash. The Anand district administration had also earlier carried out a demolition drive using bulldozers to remove structures owned by people allegedly in- volved in communal clashes in Khambhat town there during the Ram Navami celebra- tion. This year’s theme ‘IP Youth: Innovating for a Better Future’ rightly acknowledges the positive changes that youth are effecting through disruptive ideas technologies. TOP TWEETS PRASHANT KISHOR AND CONGRESS COME CLOSE, BUT CHOOSE TO PART day after Congress president Sonia Gan- dhi formed an em- powered action group to take steps for the party’s revival based on the points made by poll strate- gist Prashant Kishor the two have parted company, though not on a bitter note. Prashant Kishor’s statement that he has declined the Congress chief’s of- fer to join the party has led to finger-pointing at Rahul Gan- dhi’s coterie. One would tend to believe those who say that this coterie does not want any change which will weaken their position in the Congress. The point of friction could have been the role which was of- fered to PK as against what he aspired for. Whatever may be the reason, the star-crossed Con- gress looks set to continue its journey on the beaten track. The party’s plan to hold a Nav Chintan Shivir at Udaipur next month for revival may prove to be an exercise in futility given the old guard’s penchant for sta- tus quo. Who wants change? A lon Musk, who is the new owner of Twitter, has been a strong advocate of free speech on the social media platform. A month before making his hos- tile bid to buy out Twitter in an all-cash deal, Musk con- ducted his own poll tweeting, “Free speech is essential for democracy . Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?” Of the 2,035,924 votes polled, 70.4 per- cent said “No”. The Tesla and SpaceX boss describes him- self as a “free-speech absolut- ist”. Although he is known to have blocked some of his crit- ics on Twitter, Musk said in another tweet, “I hope my worst critics remain on Twit- ter, because that is what free speechmeans.”Inyetanother tweetMusksaid,“Freespeech is the bedrock of democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of human- ity are debated…” All that sounds like wish- ful thinking. Democracies around the world, including India, are reluctant to allow absolute freedom of speech even though it is guaranteed in the Constitution. Govern- ment, though biased in quite a few cases, keeps an eye on hate and provocative mes- sages on Twitter. Will Musk allow an anti-Narendra Modi tweet the likes of which land- ed Jignesh Mevani, the inde- pendent MLA from Gujarat, in jail in Assam? Indiaisstronglyinfavourof regulating social media plat- forms and so is the European Union. The EU has proposed a Digital Services Act that pro- vides for hefty fines on Inter- net platforms like Twitter if theyfailtoflagterroristpropa- gandaorcurbdisinformation. Absolutely free speech will remain a notional idea. FREE SPEECH ON SOCIAL MEDIA IS RISKY BIZ Though biased in quite a few cases, the Government keeps an eye on hate and provocative messages on Twitter. Will Musk allow an anti-Narendra Modi tweet, the likes of which landed Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani in jail? E AAP goes full throttle, makes forays across nation f the recently held bypolls in WB are any indication for the prospects of the Grand Old Party… it may be noted that the party’s fortunes are turn- ing out to be the same across the length and breadth of the country . In the Guwahati Munici- pal Corporation elections, BJP and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Sunday swept elections winning 58 of the total 60 wards, while the principal opposition party Congress drew a blank! The other 2 seats were shared by debutant AAP and the Assam Jatiya Party (AJP). It is not difficult to gauge the matter of the fact that the Congress’ stature of the principal Opposition par- ty has been dwindling at jet speed and it may not be per- haps wrong to say that the Old Order has Changeth…! The buoyed AAP has been seen to open its account even in as far as Assam especially at a time when even regional parties like Trinamool have not been able to create a rip- ple in states like Tripura not- withstanding its giant stat- ure in WB. AAP has already made for- ays into several frontiers of the country . The party has started its groundwork for the KarnatakaAssemblyelections due in the first half of 2023. Even as the ruling BJP and the “opposition” Congress are preparing for the ballot battle in Karnataka, the AAP smells opportunity in the southern state. AAP’s state convener, Karnataka, Prithvi Reddy recently told the me- dia that people of the state will have a real alternative after a long time. While AAP will continue banking on the party’s win- ning formula of focusing on providing basic necessities for people to live in dignity, Reddy said adding that a Kar- nataka plan is also in place. THE HIMACHAL STORY Since Himachal Pradesh and Punjab are neighbouring states, many believe the AAP could “vroom” in Himachal as it did Punjab. But political observers with an eye on Himachal’s politics have a different script to narrate. The Ground Reality of Himachal is a trifle different. Himachal has traditional- ly been a two-party state, with the Congress and the BJP at the helm. Several po- litical parties in the past tried their luck in Himachal but have never succeeded. In Punjab, what mainly wentinfavourof AAPwasthe existing political forces’ dis- connect with the masses. The larger than life political netas were too far from reality liter- ally for the aam aadmi and it was here that the AAP scored with its grassroots connect. In Himachal, leaders are just like next door neigh- bours. They are so closely connected with the fabric of their constituency that they know each family and attend their weddings, funerals etc and all social events. Himachal is well placed in most social development pa- rameters. At nearly 83% lit- eracy rate (2011 Census), it is one of the most literate states in the country. It has also done well in improving pri- mary healthcare. Despite its topography, Himachal has a hundred per cent electrifica- tion and a good road network. ROAD TO GUJARAT With a massive roadshow in Ahmedabad on April 2, AAP declared its next major goal after winning Punjab — chal- lenging the BJP and the Con- gress in Gujarat and consoli- dating itself as the third power in what has histori- cally been (again like in Himachal) a two-party state. The AAP’s plans (for the state) were apparent in the closed-door meetings that the party’s national convener and Delhi CM Arvind Kejri- wal held with key social and political leaders. On March 27, Kejriwal met BTP leader and Dediapada MLA Mahesh Vasava. The party, which has two MLAs at present, is like- ly to ally with the AAP for the Assembly elections. AAP’s PAST TENSE AAP’s Gujarat unit was set up in 2013 but it got its first state president 4 years later in 2017 when 79-year-old re- tired mathematics professor Kishore Desai was appoint- ed. It contested 29 of the 182 Assembly seats and bagged votes even less than the NOTA option in some con- stituencies. The party rejiged its state organisation in 2020. So, the Congress must real- ise the state of affairs and it is evident from the AAP’s ef- forts which slow but steady, that the party is inching ahead to capture the Grand Old Party’s position as the principal Opposition. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL I ROBIN ROY The writer is Senior Associate Editor, Free Press Journal, Mumbai and former Managing Editor, First India THE BJP CONNECT The BJP’s national president Jagat Prakash Nadda hails from Himachal. Congress also has a reasonably good presence there. However, the dismal state of the Grand Old Party in the rest of the country could be worrying for it. AAP will have to work on a sound and credible roadmap here that is unique to the Himachal needs, which would be its USP. In Punjab, Congress ruled for 26 years, Akali Dal for 24 and the people of Punjab felt let down. I think the situation is very similar in Karnataka. Now that they will have a real alternative, I think Karnataka will vote in one way. Prithvi Reddy, AAP’s state convener, Karnataka

Words is that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar would leave Bi- har politics and head to Delhi. The present or- ganization of the party is not working properly which is evident in the NDA’s performance which was poor in the recently held elections to the 24 Legislative Council seats in the state. BJP lost many of its seats, due to mutual factionalism. After that the BJP lost badly in the by-electiononBochahan seat as well. Since then the demand for change in the state organisation has intensified. According to in- formed sources, BJP state president Sanjay Jaiswal can be replaced. It is being told that the BJP will make an upper caste individual the state president. The bot- tom line of the review after the defeat of the Legislative Council and Bochahan is that the party has become too backward-centred, an- gering the core voters, the upper castes. Keep in mind that the BJP StatePresidentandboth the Deputy Chief Minis- ters come from back- ward castes. Nityanand Rai is sitting in the most important ministry at the center, he also be- longs to the backward caste and the in-charge is also from the back- ward caste. That is why it is being said that now a leader from the upper caste strata will be made the state president and according to sources in the BJP, a change may happen soon. Will BJP fall back on ‘core voters’? IN BIHAR Let Sonia Gandhi take decision: Thomas on disciplinary action Kochi (Agencies): Soon after the AK An- tony-led Congress dis- ciplinary committee meeting held to take a call on breaching of party discipline by for- mer Union Minister KV Thomas, concluded on Tuesday, Thomas told the media here that let the decision come. According to sourc- es, the Antony com- mittee has come up with a few recommen- dations, which include removing Thomas from posts, and sent it to Congress president Sonia Gandhi for fur- ther action. Thomas is a member of the high power po- litical affairs commit- tee in the Kerala unit of the party and is also an AICC member. When the media pointed out these, he said: “I cannot answer to such assumptions and let Sonia Gandhi take the decision. One thing I can tell is what- ever is the decision, I will always remain a Congressman.” Meanwhile, the An- tony-led committee, de- clined a request from Thomas that he would like to appear in person before the committee. Thomas has also written to Sonia seek- ing an appointment. Incidentally , both An- tony and Thomas were in the cabinet of then Prime Minister Man- mohan Singh 2009-14 and the latter was the State Tourism and Fish- eries Minister in the cabinet of Antony in Kerala during 2001-04. The Congress lead- ers from Kerala have been seeking Thomas’s immediate removal from the party follow- ing his participation in a seminar on the Cen- tre-state relations held as part of the 23rd par- ty congress of the CPI- M held in Kannur early this month. The CPI-M had as part of its 23rd party congress invited Shashi Tharoor and Thomas to participate in the seminar. State Congress party president AK Sudha- karan immediately in- formed both the lead- ers not to participate and even the party president Sonia inter- vened in the matter and told the leaders not to participate. While Tha- roor backed out, Thom- as decided to go ahead with the seminar. Probe agencies scan PFI’s role in Jahangirpuri riots New Delhi (Agencies): Central probe agencies have been scanning the alleged role of the Pop- ular Front of India (PFI) into the Jahangir- puri communal vio- lence on April 16, ac- cording to sources. The sources in the in- telligence network have said that the agencies have been scanning the presence of a few peo- ple connected to the PFI’s student wing in Jahangirpuri and try- ing to ascertain with whom they met while they were in the area. The sources also said that they have identified around 22 mobile num- bersof PFIstudentwing members who were pre- sent in the area before the violence erupted. They said that the probe agencies have been trying to ascertain their activities and they may be questioned by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police. Some of these num- bers were found to be ac- tiveevenduringtheFeb- ruary 2020 Delhi riots. The probe agencies also want to ascertain whether these PFI members had any links with the violence in Ja- hangirpuri. BSP faced maximum defections in UP polls Police oppose Umar’s bail plea in Delhi riots case Lucknow (Agencies): The Bahujan Samaj Par- ty (BSP) faced the maxi- mum number of defec- tions by its candidates and MLAs during the recent assembly elec- tions in Uttar Pradesh. The BSP lost nearly 75 (27 per cent) candi- dates to other parties during the polls and 12 sitting MLAs crossed over to other parties. According to a de- tailed analysis report released by Associa- tion for Democratic Re- forms (ADR), the num- ber of candidates who left the Congress to join other parties was 37 (13 per cent). In recent assembly elections, 54 (20 per cent) out of the total of 276 re-contesting candi- dates switched to the Samajwadi Party fol- lowed by 35 (13 per cent) candidates who joined BJP and 31 (11 per cent) candidates who joined BSP. The CBI officers have also contacted the Re- gional Passport Office in Kolkata to verify Mandal’s claims of not having any passport. According to CBI sources, on Monday , the central agency had sought from Mandal de- tails about his passport, but he denied having one. Sources said the Lok Sabha Secretariat has also sent a letter to the state government seek- ing the reasons for the arrest as well as the fac- tual situation about her claims at the Khar po- lice station in Mumbai. In her letter to LS Speaker Om Birla, the MP claimed that she was denied water at the police station because she was a Dalit. She said she was sent to By- culla Women’s Jail while her husband was taken to taloja Jail. “To my shock and disbelief, the police staff told me that I be- long to Scheduled Caste and hence they will not give me water in the same glass. Thus, I was directly abused on the basis of my caste and it is only for this reason that no drinking water was provided,” she said. Apart from this, there are surveys of media groups and sur- vey agencies, which reveal the popularity of parties and leaders. But distanced from these is the Aam Aad- mi Party (AAP) has its own model of survey wherein the party it- self conducts the sur- vey and declares it for her political purpose. Like AAP has just an- nounced a survey again. This was an- nounced by the party’s Kalkaji MLA Atishi. This survey will be done across the coun- try, in which people’s opinion about the par- ty will be asked. Along with this, opinion about BJP will also be sought. Through this, the aim of the Aam Aadmi Party is to mark itself better than the BJP, which will be evi- dent from this survey . Everyone knows the results as soon as the survey starts. Every- one knows that after this alleged survey, it will be announced by AAP that the people of the country like AAP instead of BJP and the model of AAP govern- ments is better than BJP governments. Even before this, the Aam Aadmi Party has conducted countless surveys, in which it wins every time. After every survey comes the desired results of the party leadership. It is being told that this is the beginning of the party’s positioning for pan-India politics. In fact, questions have been raised about Arvind Kejriwal’s si- lence in the midst of communal riots and hate speeches happen- ing across the country . Interestingly, political observers feel that this survey has been an- nounced to divert at- tention from Kejriwal. AAP ENGAGED IN POLITICAL SURVEY OR SURVEY POLITICS? At least we are not giv- ing you that advice.” He also stated that what happened in Af- ghanistan clearly stated what was the rules- based order. “We have to find a way to return to diplo- macy and to do that, the fighting must stop.” Talking about the wider consequences of the war, the minister said “there will be no winners out of this conflict”. EAM S Jaishankar Centre says over 64,800 Kashmiri Pandit families left the Valley in early 1990s New Delhi (PTI): Pa- kistan-sponsored ter- rorism forced 64,827 Kashmiri Pandit fami- lies to leave Kashmir valley in the early 1990s and settle in Jammu, Delhi and other parts of the country, the gov- ernment has said. According to the an- nual report of the Home Ministry for 2020-21, as many as 14,091 civilians and 5,356 security force per- sonnel lost their lives to terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir between the 1990s and 2020. “Militancy in Jammu and Kashmir is intri- cately linked with infil- tration of terrorists from across the border,” the report said. Besides Kashmiri Pandits, terrorism forced some Sikh and Muslim families too to migrate from Kashmir valley to Jammu, Delhi and other parts of the country, it said. Nearly 1,054 families from the hilly areas of Jammu migrated to Jammu plains, it said. As per the records of registration available with the Relief and Mi- grant Commissioner of Jammu and Kash- mir, at present 43,618 registered Kashmiri migrant families are settled in Jammu, 19,338 families are set- tled in Delhi and Na- tional Capital Region, and 1,995 families in a few other states and Union Territories, the report said. Refiners in India have placed orders for at least 40 million bar- rels of Russian oil since the invasion on Feb. 24, Reuters calcu- lations based on infor- mation from crude tenders and traders show. The purchases are for loading in the June quarter. That com- pares with total im- ports of Russian oil into India of 16 million barrels in the whole of last year, according to Reuters calculations. The world’s third biggest oil importer and consumer ships in over 85% of its crude oil needs of 5 million barrels per day (bpd). Its refiners are buying cheaper Russian oil to partly offset the im- pact of higher official selling prices of some producers like Saudi Arabia, company sources said. “We try to insulate consumers as much from price shocks as we can, but we need to protect our profits as well... so we are buying Russian oil,” an official at one refiner, who declined to be named, said. According to Reu- ters calculations, pur- chases of Russian bar- rels by private refin- ers Reliance Indus- tries and Nayara En- ergy outstrip imports by state refiners Indi- an Oil Corp, Hindu- stan Petroleum Corp, and Bharat Petroleum Corp. RBI to hike repo rate in June, earlier than predicted: Poll New Delhi (Agencies): The Reserve Bank of India will raise its repo rate in June and hike at a faster pace than pre- dicted just a few weeks ago as a surge in infla- tion puts pressure on the central bank to act quicker, a poll showed on Tuesday . Retail inflation accel- erated to nearly 7 per cent in March, above the 6 per cent upper limit of the central bank’s targeted range, and will likely soar fur- ther as a spike in global energy prices since Rus- sia’s invasion of Ukraine seeps into con- sumer prices. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) kept its key rate at a record low 4.0 per cent at its April meeting despite shifting its focus to in- flation from growth. But March’s 17-month- high inflation number leaves little room for the RBI other than hik- ing sooner rather than later, and all but three of 46 economists in an April 20-25 Reuters poll expected the RBI to raise the repo rate for the first time since 2018 in June. While 42 ex- pected a 25 basis point hike to 4.25 per cent, only one predicted a 50 basis point hike. Palm oil imports on track despite Indonesia's curbs:Traders Mumbai (Agen- cies): India’s palm oil imports in May are set to rise above 600,000 tonnes de- spite the restriction imposed by Indone- sia on exports as most of the con- tracted quantity will be loaded before Jakarta’s ban be- comes effective, traders. The world’s big- gest palm oil export- er plans from Thurs- day to stop ship- ments of refined, bleached and deo- dorized (RBD) palm olein but will allow exports of crude palm oil (CPO) or other derivative products. The ban could dent India’s imports in June as refiners are strug- gling to secure sup- plies from Malaysia, traders said. India is the world’s biggest importer of palm oil. Over 32 L foreigners visited India in 2020 during lockdown New Delhi (PTI): More than 32.79 lakh foreigners, including over 61,000 Ameri- cans, visited India in 2020 when the country was on a long spell of nationwide lockdown and other restrictions due to the Covid pan- demic. A total of 8,438 German nation- als, 8,353 French citi- zens, 7,163 from Iraq also visited India during this period. FASTEST-GROWING New Delhi (Agencies): Russian and Indian officials met last week in an effort to resolve an impasse over the shipping of coking coal to indian steelmakers, which has dried up since March over payment methods, a trade source and an Indian government source said. Russia usually supplies about 30% of European Union, Japanese and South Korean coking coal needs, while India had planned to double its Russian imports to around 9 million tonnes this year. Imports make up around 85% of India’s overall coking coal needs, which total 50-55 million tonnes a year, and New Delhi last year signed a deal to import from Russia. First India Bureau Malappuram: Karna- taka capped off a dra- matic final game in Group B to beat Gujarat 4-0 and qualify for the semi-finals of the 75th NationalFootballCham- pionship for Santosh Trophy at the Manjeri Payyanad Football Sta- dium here on Monday . Services’ victory over Odisha earlier in the day had upset the com- fortable apple cart that was this group. The math, leading into this final group stage game was simple. Karnataka neededtowinbyathree- goal margin to go through. In the 12th minute, Karnataka had the lead, Sudheer Kotikela pick- ing up a brilliantly played through ball from midfield, driving into the box from the right, and unleashing a perfect finish into the bottom far corner. In the 28th, P Kama- lesh collected a square pass from D Arun Ku- mar at the edge of the Gujarat area, switched feet, cutting past Har- shil Parekh and Mu- hammed Sagar Ali as if they weren’t even there, before opening up his body and curling for the right corner of the goal. His shot was perfect, and the finish glorious. Karnataka were two to the good. Within minutes, they had their crucial third. Prashanth Kalinga ran into space on the right and curled a superb cross into a dangerous areainKarnataka’sbox. Despite being sand- wiched by two defend- ers, Kotikela, five yards from goal, sent a first time finish into the net. His team were in rap- tures. And on a ram- page. Suddenly, with just half an hour gone, Karnataka was dream- ing of the semi-finals. Gujarat came out for the second half with a little more urgency . But right on the hour mark, a cross from D Arun Ku- mar on the left dropped the ball perfectly to Ma- gesh Selva in the box. Theforwarddidn’tmiss, connecting neatly to put Karnataka in dream- land. They stayed there for the remaining third of the game, controlling possession brilliantly, creating chances and threatening to score more, all the while keep- ing Gujarat at safe dis- tance. At the referee’s final whistle it was jubi- lation, in the stands and on the pitch. A team of the spe- cial operations group (SOG) arrested the duo from Odhav local- ity of the city with 238.4 gm of mephed- rone, worth Rs 23.8 lakh, he said. Mahesh and Lalshankar, both na- tives of Dungarpur in Rajasthan, were ar- rested while they were trying to deliver the contraband, the offi- cial said. The man who supplied the banned drug for deliv- ery has been named as a wanted accused in the case, he said. “The accused are primarily farmers who were drawn into it for money. The pri- mary investigation has revealed that the duo was promised Rs 2 lakh to deliver the contraband,” the offi- cial said. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Sub- stances (NDPS) Act has been registered, and further investiga- tion was underway to identify the receiver, he added. The seizure comes a day after the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the Indian Coast Guard in a joint operation caught a boat from Pakistan with a consignment of heroin worth Rs 280 crore. Bhavesh Barot Himmatnagar: The crime branch of Sa- barkantha police has busted a gang in- volved in allegedly duping people with a promise of hidden treasure by selling them ‘magic chash- ma’ (magic eyewear). According to police, the gang members would lure probable customers by telling tales of the ‘magic eyewear’. They also claimed that the eye- wear would help them see through the soil and find hidden treasures. Two of the arrested five member-gang Nat- varsinh Damor and Nidhraj Meena used to procure tinted glasses from Delhi and later fix them in golden frames, giving them a ‘magic eyewear’ look and sell- ing them to gullible people. Police inspec- tor MD Champavat said that gang members would invite the gulli- ble customers to a place, make them sit with a checker who would convince them that the eyewear is real, and then the cus- tomer would pay for a new pair of glasses. They have created a Himmatnagar busi- nessman of Rs5.20 lakh. From the five arrested, police have recovered Rs2.70 lakh cash, a car, mobile phones, the ‘magic eyewear’ specta- cles and other belong- ings. A further investi- gations in underway . Mumbai (PTI): The speed gun radar will be functioning overtime when Lockie Fergu- son’s 150-click thunder- bolts meet their match in rising pace sensation Umran Malik’s toe- crushers as table-top- pers Gujarat Titans clash with close-on- heels Sunrisers Hy- derabad (SRH) on Wednesday . The IPL newcomers are currently in the midst of a dream incep- tion year with six wins from seven games at the halfway stage and are placed on top of the ta- ble. Interestingly, the only loss that Titans suffered in their cam- paign so far was against Sunrisers in an earlier meeting and Hardik Pandya wouldn’t mind sweet revenge. However, the Orange Army’s bowling attack especially their four- prong fast bowling unit has been exceptional as one saw when they de- molished RCB for 68 in their previous encoun- ter. The disconcerting bounce and movement created by Marco Jans- en (6 wickets from 5 games) is ably comple- mented by Umran’s (10 wickets from 7 games) fiery pace, T Natara- jan’s (15 from 7 games) deceptions off the track and Bhuvneshwar Ku- mar (9 from 7 games) balancing it all with his experience. So much so that a lightweight spin de- partment manned by left-arm spinner Jagadeesha Suchith in absence of an injured Washington Sundar, till now hasn’t been a cause of worry for Kane Wil- liamson and his band of men. In fact, the rub of the green has gone SRH’s way in this particular season as they now have five consecutive wins from five games where they have chased tar- gets after the bowlers intimidated the rival batting unit. For Pandya though, his bowling unit is no inferior to SRH as Mo- hammed Shami’s art- istry (10 from 7 games) and Ferguson’s (9 wick- ets from 7 games) ag- gression has brought them a lot of success, not to forget Rashid Khan’s (8 wickets from 7 games) ability to be more than decent even in a quiet year by his standards. Titans’ bowling at- tack has the ability to catch the SRH batting unit off-guard consider- ing that it hasn’t been tested a lot with young Abhishek Sharma (220 in 7 games) and No.3 batter Rahul Tripathi (212 from 7 games) do- ing the bulk of the scor- ing in easy chases. If Titans could breach through the Sunrisers top-order, most of the middle-or- der batters including the dangerous Nicholas Pooran haven’t yet got a decent hit in the middle and the rustiness under pressure could keep Ti- tans interested. If they manage to up- set SRH’s rhythm, it will take them closer to play-offs in their maid- en year in the champi- onship, no mean achievement in a com- petition of this class. According to reports, the victim’s mother and her para- mour beat her up and asked her not to dis- close her ordeal. Po- lice arrested both ac- cused on Monday and investigating further. Komalika (name changed), a Class VI stu- dent, was returning home after school on April 23, when Vishal and Kisan grabbed her. They took her to an iso- lated place and raped her. The duo then dropped her off near her residence and fled the spot. On reaching home, the minor in- formed her mother about the crime, follow- ing which, she was beat up with a plastic pipe. On April 24, when her landlord saw her weep- ingoutsidethehouse,he inquired about the rea- son. After hearing her plight, he took her to social activist Mustaq Belim, and they both ac- companied her to Ku- vadva police station. Police Inspector Bhar- gav Jankat registered a complaint and swung into action and arrested both accused. According to the vic- tim, her mother did not act against the accused because they are friends of Alpesh with whom she is having an affair. The minor has under- gone a medical exam. Once given in service to Renuka Yellamma deity, the child stays away from home to worship Yellam- ma, begs for alms to sur- vive, and performs the folk-dance form of Jogati in praise of the goddess. There are exceptions everywhere and one such phenomenal soul I met in Bengaluru was Manjamma Jogati, the first trans wom- an in the country who is the President of the Karna- taka’s Janapada Academy since 2019. She was felici- tated with the honour of Padma Shri by the Presi- dent of India Ramnath Ko- vind in 2021 in New Delhi for her incredible efforts in the domain of North Kar- nataka, South Maharash- tra, and a part of Andhra Pradesh’s famous Jogathi Folk Dance forms. In this vein, one of Man- jamma’s unique dance forms is where she places the Yellamma deity on her head and dances. For the last 40 years, Manjamma is in the profession of folk dancing. People fondly call her ‘Amma’. Always a big red bindi on the forehead with sindoor, countless glass bangles with a fascination for gajara (flowers) in the hair are Amma’s style statements. Today with her 11 members team, Amma through her registered trust - Padmashri Mata B Manjamma Jogathi Pratistana aims to work for the Trans community and their legal rights, train Trans men and women in Folk art forms, offer skill development training, pro- vide shelter to old age trans community. She is developing and conserving Jogati Padya (singing), nir- tya (dance) forms and brought in various non- verbal dance movements in the performing arts. To- day many Jogati communi- ties are learning and are giving stage performances of the art form all over In- dia. In 2010, Manjamma received the Rajyotsava Award from the Karnataka Government. Born in a middle-class family in Karnataka’s Kallkamba village near Bellari district on May 20th, 1957 Manjunatha Shetty aka Manjamma was one of the blessed children out of the 21 siblings. But among those children, only four survived. Amma’s voice Vikram B.K. an engi- neer by profession and a contemporary dancer con- nected with Amma in 2017. He told a detailed story of Amma to me and said, “Manjunatha studied till class 10th. With a male body but a woman from deep inside, Manjunatha was inclined towards girly stuff and activities since childhood. He got bullied quite a lot by other chil- dren. He loved to wear her mother’s sarees at home and helped her mother with daily kitchen chores. His father and brother were entirely against Man- junatha’s behaviour.” Feeling isolated and ignored by her family Manjamma tried to take poison but the almighty had different plans for her. At the young age of 18 yrs. through proper rituals, Manjunatha was adopted into the culture of Jogati life. From here Manjunatha became Manjamma and left the house. She was sur- viving in a very difficult situation by begging on the streets. During this time, she got molest- ed by four men. This inci- dent shook her inside and she tried to finish her life. But with a life-changing thought, she stood up again and decided that she will never let down herself. Then onwards Amma started selling idlis and taking tuition classes. In Devanagari town where Amma was living saw a father-son duo. Son was dancing and father was singing with a special instrument. Amma with enthusiasm showed inter- est to learn this art form and joined them. A trans woman ‘Kaalavva Jogati’ approached Amma and asked her to join their group of artists transwom- en as they wanted some ac- tive members in the group to perform and do street plays/dance with them. Amma agreed and started contributing her acting skills to their play and learned the group’s dance form as well. Since then Amma never looked back and after Kaalavva’s death, her legacy Amma is taken forward. One fine day while going for a performance Amma was sitting with Vikram at the Bangalore airport and surprisingly shared some- thing interesting with him and said, “Vikram, it is dif- ficult to accept that four Idlis that I used to sell in 1 rupee today the same idlis cost so expensive today, i.e., One plate with two idlis costs Rs. 200/-. Time is changing so rapidly .” In the end, with a heavy heart, Amma stated to me, “It’s an irony that we are living an isolated life. People have a fear to mingle with us. Despite getting the le- gal rights from the govern- ment, a society with a changed mindset needs to accept us all. There is still a lot more things that needs to be done.” ANUBHA JAIN Cityfirst@firstindia.co.in A DANCING GAVE AMMA A REASON TO LIVE Given in service Given in service to Goddess to Goddess Yellamma as a Yellamma as a teen, Manjunatha teen, Manjunatha Shetty was Shetty was honoured with a honoured with a Padma Shri by Padma Shri by President Ramnath President Ramnath Kovind in 2021 Kovind in 2021 for her efforts to for her efforts to promote the Jogati promote the Jogati dance form dance form President Ram Nath Kovind felicitates Manjunatha Shetty in November ETC www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/ahmedabad I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia AHMEDABAD | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 2022 10
