Cong calls meet ahead of Sonia’s
2nd appearance at the ED today
New Delhi: A day
ahead of Sonia Gan-
dhi’s appearance at the
Enforcement Directo-
rate office here, the
Congress on Monday
has called a meeting of
the party leaders to pre-
pare for protests. The
party has asked its
workers to hold a peace-
ful ‘satyagraha’.
Addressing the me-
dia, Congress MP KC
Venugopal said, ‘We de-
cided to hold a peaceful
protest in front of Ra-
jghat on Tuesday (as
Sonia Gandhi will ap-
pear before ED). We had
given an application to
Delhi Police for permis-
sion but they denied it.
It’s unfortunate and
condemnable. Govern-
ment is suppressing op-
position voice.’
Mallikarjun Kharge, KC Venugopal, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and
Jairam Ramesh during the meeting at AICC HQ, Delhi on Monday.
As for the proto-
col, how did CM
Shinde appear in
the first row? They make
their own people sit in the
front. And a recognised
opposition leader is sim-
ply brushed aside. It is not
okay. It is not appropriate
to suspend someone. The
govt is intimidating them
for putting forth the truth
in the parl. It shows that
PM Modi wants to end
our democracy.

Chennai: TN Assembly Speaker M Appavu on Monday

Catholic missions. He claimed that
it was Catholic missionaries that

said that the outgoing president
“fulfilled BJP’s political agenda”.
Taking to Twitter minutes after

Mumbai: India’s for-
eign currency (forex)
reserves as on Sunday
night stood at $US 572
billion even as the
country appears head-
ed for a record year-on-
year growth in its forex
holdings that stood at
$US 561 billion and $US
642 billion for the en-
tire fiscal years of 2020-
2021 and 2021-2022 re-
spectively
.
Progressively, the fo-
rex mop-up over the
last 8 years has wit-
nessed a steady and
consistent improve-
ment over the previous
year since 2014 under
the Narendra Modi led
Union Government.
During the erstwhile
UPA-2 government led
by Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh (not-
ed economist) of the
Indian National Con-
gress, the forex hold-
ings grew from $US 251
billion in 2008-2009 to
$US 304 billion in 2013-
2014 (over six fiscal
years), the Modi led
NDA government has
maintained a much
higher and consistent
forex growth levels an-
nually.
Since the BJP came
to power in India in
the 2014-2015 fiscal
year ($US 341 bn), 2015-
2016 ($US 360 bn), 2016-
2017 ($US369 bn), 2017-
2018 ($US 424 bn); bar-
ring the 2018-2019 fis-
cal ($US 412 bn), the
forex growth has con-
sistently been main-
tained. The growth
levels were main-
tained in 2019-2020
($US 477bn), 2020-2021
($US 561 bn), 2021-2022
(642 bn) with the first
two quarters of the
current fiscal year
2022-2023 already regis-
tering $US 572 bn so far.
Co-convenor of the
BJP’s Maharashtra
Vyapari Cell Mahen-
dra Jain disagrees.
Says he, “We are heav-
ily dependent on forex
for importing of oil
and gold, although the
sharp rupee trade ne-
gotiations by India
with many countries
has already resulted
in a rupee-rouble
trade deal for oil im-
ports from Russia, ed-
ible and soybean oil
imports from Indone-
sia and now we are ne-
gotiating a rupee cur-
rency trade deal with
Iran from where we
have huge gas im-
ports. Effectively the
sanctions that were
placed on Russia more
recently, and on Iran
earlier by the Euro-US
axis have failed. India
has shifted close to a
quarter of its imports
to rupee transactions
which again is a big
save and further bol-
sters out forex re-
serves each year.”
Why do we need such a large pool of (forex)
reserves although it is a contingency against
oil imports? Forex reserves growth is an
overhyped fact. Indian economy had
faced a huge balance of payment crisis
in 1991 and was able to leverage her
gold reserves for an (int'l) bridge loan
to overcome the crisis. We are a very
large and vibrant economy where the
manufacturing sector is very weak even
when compared to middle income industrial countries.
 —Ravi Duggal, Fiscal sociologist
While Europe (Euro)
and China (Yuan)
tried to similarly exit the
$US hegemony in interna-
tional transactions they con-
ducted the huge dollar holdings
they had made the exercise futile,
Jain pointed out. On this fact, even
Duggal agrees while remembering
the Chinese efforts on the front.

ecently, police in
Meghalaya raided a
resort owned by BJP
leader Bernard
Marak Rimpu, call-
ing it a “brothel”. Police claimed
to have rescued five minors, in-
cluding a girl, from Rimpu
Bagan and arrested 73 people.
Marak has denied any wrongdo-
ing and was defended by the
state party unit which said that
Marak was possibly a victim of
political vendetta. Marak point-
ed his finger at Chief Minister
Conrad Sangma to allege that he
was behind the raid. BJP is a
minor ally in the Meghalaya
Democratic Alliance headed by
National People’s Party. The
BJP views it as an attempt to
malign the party. Whatever the
party may say, the alliance ap-
pears to have hit a rough patch.
Meghalaya being too distant
for the media it is more focused
on the infighting in the Con-
gress in Karnataka where state
Congress president DK Shivaku-
mar and former Chief Minister
Siddaramaiah are keen to settle
the leadership issue before 2023

of the Roman
Catholic Church for its in in-
volvement in physical, sexu-
al, mental and emotional
abuse of children of the coun-

comprising the Metis and In-
uit over several decades. He
had earlier expressed regret
for the deplorable acts of Jes-
uit priests when a delegation
of Indigenous people met him
at the Apostolic Palace in
Vatican City in April this
year. Canada’s Indigenous
community has been insist-
ing on a personal apology by
the Pope, although it will not
remove the scars on people’s
minds. The apology will be
merely symbolic.
In the name of “cultural as-
similation” Catholic priests
responsible for education
forcefully took away about
150,000 Indigenous children
from their families to live in
church-run schools. Because
of the abuse, thousands of
them died. The horrific de-
tails emerged after more than
1300 unmarked graves were
found where the schools
stood. As part of cultural as-
similation children were
barred from speaking their
language, practicing their
culture and traditions.
That church misused its
powers against the Indige-
nous people of Canada is not
the only instance of its kind.
In 2015, Pope Francis apolo-
gized for the “grave sins”
committed by the church. He
then said, “…Many grave sins
were committed against the
native people of America in
the name of God…I humbly
seek forgiveness…”

nous people of the colonised

the Eastern Europe is gripped
by the most destructive Euro-

conflict since World War II.

not just the refugee inflow and
the corresponding economic
burden on European coun-

If media reports are to be
believed, Ukrainians appear
to be losing unity amid mili-
tary defeats in the Donbass
and mounting economic cri-
sis. The surge of patriotism
that arose when the Russian
army was close to Kiev ap-
pears to have been exhaust-
ed. Along with it, the nation-
al consensus that saw all po-
litical groups rallying behind
the Ukrainian army seems to
have disappeared.
To counter the effects of
sanctions, the Russian army
has pivoted its strategy and
appears to be concentrating
on objectives of economic in-
terest and by mid-June, Rus-
sia occupied 125.000 sq kms of
Ukrainian territory
. The civil
society and the Army are
now not hopeful of a speedy
victory against the invaders
and even Zelensky himself
has lost his optimism.
If we go by the recent his-
tory, we would learn that in
the modern world, famines
are man-made. The Russia -
Ukraine war is a Suttle re-
minder of this fact and now
threatens millions of endan-
gered people around the
world with extreme hunger.
Much to the trauma of the
world, Ukraine remains the
breadbasket for the world, ex-
porting millions of tonnes of
wheat,barleyandmaizeevery
year. It is also a leader in sun-
flower seeds export used for
vegetable oil. But overnight,
these commodities have van-
ished from food stocks as Rus-
siacontinueschockingthesea
trade routes of Ukraine. The
dominance of Black Sea by
RussianNavyhasplungedthe
global food markets into a tur-
moil, with soaring prices, ex-
port bans and shortages.
Countries across Asia, the
Middle East, Africa, and even
Latin America are reeling un-
der the effects of this conflict.
The threat to global food
security is further aggravat-
ed by the upheaval in fuel and
fertiliser markets as, short-
ages and price hikes reduce
access to these vital inputs
for farming community. Ag-
riculturists believe that with-
out urgent action, food pro-
duction and crop yields will
get slashed and may raise a
frightening possibility of
food crisis the world over in
next 12 to 24 months and
cause multiple famines.
Shockingly
, the World Food
Programme’s latest analysis,
completed in Jun - July re-
veals there were 276 million
severely hungry people
marching towards starvation
before the war. This number
has risen to 345 million dur-
ing the period of the Ukraine
crisis.Thereportfurthersays
that a staggering 50 million
peoplein45countriesarenow
just one step from famine.
Paradoxically
, this War has
demonstrated how interde-
pendent EU is on the country
they impose sanctions upon.
However,somecountrieshave
already started detesting the
NATO actions on Russia. As
they understand how difficult
it will be for them to beat the
winters without availability
of Russian gas. Kremlin con-
trols 25% of world’s natural
gas requirements and 18% of
coalexports.While,European
Unionimportsroughly43per-
cent of its requirement of
naturalgasfromRussia,mak-
ing them heavily dependent
onthesuperpower.Becauseof
Putin’s decision to limit en-
ergy exports to many nations,
theconsequencesof theEuro-
pean energy crisis have ex-
panded and redefined the way
in which Europe approaches
energy efforts and its rela-
tions with Moscow. Should it
stand by Ukraine and NATO
or, allow its citizens, industry
and economy to grow by
mendingfenceswithRussiais
the moot question.
The leadership of Europe
is also fearful that the lavish
deliveries of ‘lethal weapons’
from the US, UK and other
NATO countries to Ukraine
are finding their way to the
dark web. The Ukrainian
traders claim to offer not just
small arms or body Armor
on the dark web, but also
such sophisticated hardware
as Javelin and NLAW anti-
tank systems or Phoenix
Ghost and Switchblade ex-
plosive drones that may dis-
turb their eco subsystems.
Its time, that world leaders
come together by surrender-

dominance and arms sale to
give priority to the very exist-
ence and development of the
human race.

New Delhi: The results
of the municipal elec-
tions held in two phases
of Madhya Pradesh are
out. Both the major par-
ties of the state are in-
terpreting it in their
own way before the pub-
lic, but it is being inter-
preted differently with-
in both the parties. BJP
leaders are interpreting
this in two ways. Lead-
ers close to Chief Min-
ister Shivraj Singh
Chouhan are calling it a
big victory and they say
that this has put an end
to the speculation of
changing the Chief
Minister. In his sup-
port, he is using the
congratulations given
by the Prime Minister.
The second camp is ped-
dling the narrative that
last time not a single
Congress mayor could
win, while this time
five mayors won.
Last time, all 16 may-
ors were from BJP,
while this time there
are only nine. In this
way, discussions are
being held to change
the CM before next
year’s assembly elec-
tions. Although it is not
known what the BJP
high command
will do,
but from Narottam
Mishra to Prahlad Pa-
tel, many names, as
potential CM, have
also started to be
floated around.
There is a sepa-
rate debate between
Congress and BJP
about this. Congress
is calling it its big
victory and has
claimed that Kamal
Nath will come
to power
again in
next year’s
elections.
The party leaders
maintain that in the
elections held in 2015,
not a single Congress
mayor had won, then in
2018, Congress won,
while this time five
Congress mayors have
won. The Congress has
also won in Jyotiradi-
tya Scindia’s strong-
hold Gwalior and Nar-
endra Singh Tomar’s
stronghold Morena. On
the other hand, BJP
says that Congress has
got half the victory
from BJP despite all
the efforts. Nine out of
16 mayors of the state
belong to the BJP, while
the Congress has five.
Similarly, in these 16
municipal corpora-
tions, the BJP has won
491 wards, while the
Congress has won 274.
The BJP has won 975
wards in 76 municipali-
ties of the state, while
the Congress has won
in 571. Furthermore,
the BJP has won 2,002
wards and the Con-
gress in 1,087 wards of
the state’s 225 councils.
Will MP Municipal polls results bring an end to Shivraj’s CMship?

Musk rubishes affair rumour with Google co-founder’s wife
New Delhi: Elon
Musk said he’s not had
sex in ages, with a
sigh. Of course, the Te-
sla and SpaceX CEO,
and the richest man in
the world, was speak-
ing in context when he
denied a report accus-
ing him of having an
affair with Google co-
founder Sergey Brin’s
wife Nicole Shanahan.
A Wall Street Jour-
nal report alleged that
Musk ruined his
friendship with Brin
after his affair with
Shanahan. The report
mentions sources “fa-
miliar with the situa-
tion” who told WSJ
that the couple filed for
divorce earlier this
year over “irreconcil-
able differences”.
Now, Musk has de-
nied these accusations
to say that he and Brin
are still friends and
that the report is based
on “third-party ran-
dom hearsay”.
“This is total bs. Ser-
gey and I are friends
and were at a party to-
gether last night! I’ve
only seen Nicole twice
in three years, both
times with many other
people around. Noth-
ing romantic,” Musk
tweeted responding to
a Twitter account
called Whole Mars Cat-
alog that shared the
WSJ report tagging
Musk in the post.
“Yeah, the character
assassination attacks
have reached a new
level this year, but the
articles are all noth-
ing-burgers. I work
crazy hours, so there
just isn’t much time
for shenanigans. None
of the key people in-
volved in these alleged
wrongdoings were
even interviewed!”
Musk wrote on Twitter
responding to another
handle (Tesla Hype)
which quote tweeted
one of Musk’s older
tweets from May this
year about how politi-
cal attacks against him
would “escalate dra-
matically”.
And literally, to
wrap things up, Musk
added: “Haven’t even
had sex in ages (sigh)”.
The WSJ report alleg-
es that Musk and Shan-
ahan’s affair occurred
at the Art Basel event
in Miami just after
Musk broke up with
Claire Boucher
(Grimes). Sources told
the WSJ that Brin and
Shanahan were sepa-
rated but still living
together then.
A report from Insid-
er revealed earlier this
month that Musk had
twins with a top execu-
tive at Neuralink and a
former Tesla Employ-
ee Shivon Zillis. The
twins were born just
weeks before Musk
and Boucher had their
second child through
surrogate, “bringing
Musk’s number of
known children to
nine”, as The Verge
pointed out.

DECODING GEOPOLITICAL IMPLICATIONS
I2U2 BLOC WILL FOCUS
ONJOINTINVESTMENTS
New Delhi: Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi on July 14
joined US President
Joe Biden, Israeli
PM Yair Lapid and
UAE President Mo-
hammed bin Zayed
Al Nahyan in the
first ever meeting of
I2U2.
The leaders identi-
fied and agreed to
work towards com-
mon areas of mutual
interest. The acro-
nym ‘I2’ stands for
India and Israel and
‘U2’ stands for US
and UAE. I2U2 was
first conceptualized
during a meeting of
the foreign ministers
of the four countries
in October last year.
Not only the govern-
ment synergies, the
group will also aim
to leverage private
sector capital and ex-
pertise for many ar-
eas of economic co-
operation. Each
country will also
have Sherpa-level in-
teractions regularly.
The I2U2 bloc will
focus on joint invest-
ments in six mutu-
ally identified areas
such as water, ener-
gy, transportation,
space, health, and
food security.
While some alli-
ances are crucial for
enhanced co-opera-
tion on pressing is-
sues plaguing the
world, some of them
became redundant
over the years as
they either failed or
fell short in achiev-
ing the ambitious
goals they had set
out. So, is there a
need for one more
such bloc and what
are its geopolitical
implications?
KEY FACTORS

z I2U2 could present
an opportunity to expand ties
with the US beyond Asia.

z The acronym ‘I2’

US recession will come to
India’s tech-hub, finally
New Delhi (Agencies):
India’s tech industry is
ruling out a US reces-
sion. Or so you would
think from Infosys
Ltd.’s cheery forecast of
14% to 16% annual rev-
enue growth, slightly
better than what the
country’s second-big-
gest exporter of soft-
ware services was pro-
jecting just three
months ago. The Ben-
galuru-based firm,
which reported its June
quarter earnings on
Sunday, is considered
the industry’s weath-
ervane. If it’s optimistic
about orders, then
there’s reason to believe
that the the deal pipe-
line isn’t drying up. US
and European firms —
from banking, manufac-
turing and retail to
health care and utilities
— are still entering off-
shoring contracts, par-
ticularly those that will
help them automate
processes to cut costs.
Evidenceof heightened
activity is also visible in
lastquarter’s12%year-on-
year jump in Bengaluru
office rents — three times
as steep as Shanghai, Sin-
gapore or Sydney
, accord-
ing to Knight Frank.

investigation into the
messaging app’s new
privacy policy
.
The bench of Justice
Satish Chandra Sharma
and Justice Subramo-
nium Prasad on Mon-
day reserved the order
after the completion of
all the submissions by
all sides. Appearing for
Facebook Inc, senior ad-
vocate Mukul Rohtagi
submitted that because
Facebook is the formal
ownerof WhatsAppand
the platform is said to
share its data with Face-
book (parent company)
doesn’t mean that it is a
necessary party to in-
vestigate.While oppos-
ing the CCI probe
against Facebook, Roht-
agi further argued that
there is no prima facie
material available with
the CCI to proceed with
investigating it while
conducting the investi-
gation of WhatsApp’s
new privacy policy
.
The Division Bench
washearingthepetitions
of WhatsApp and Face-
book challenging the sin-
gle bench, which had dis-
missed Facebook and
WhatsApp’s petitions.
However, Additional
Solicitor General N
Venkataraman ap-
peared for CCI and sub-
mitted that its jurisdic-
tion to investigate
WhatsApp’s new priva-
cy policy is not closed as
the policy in question is
neither withdrawn nor
stayed by any court or
by any judicial forum.
Earlier, the CCI coun-
sel said, “we are pres-
ently not able to move
forward with the inves-
tigation as the matter is
being examined by this
court.” Earlier in the
hearing, the Bench not-
ed that the Data Protec-
tion Bill is yet to be fi-
nalised by the respond-
ents/Centre while
granting time to What-
sApp and Facebook to
file their response over
the notice issued to
them by CCI and sought
several details from
them.
The court also ex-
tended the interim or-
der granted to the ap-
pellant earlier by the
court.
Earlier, senior advo-
cate Harish Salve ap-
peared for WhatsApp
LLC and informed the
court that “We are in-
sisting to file response
on CCI notices despite
the matter being pend-
ing before the courts
and under judicial con-
sideration.”
WhatsApp was sent a
notice on June 4, 2021,
while Facebook was
sent a notice on June 8,
2021, by CCI seeking in-
formation and response
to certain queries.

UNDERCONSIDERATION
OF DIVISION BENCH: HC
Earlier, HC had said the inves-
tigation against the appellant
is under judicial consideration
before a Division Bench. It
stated, “In our view, there is
no doubt that the issuance of
impugned notice by the DG
is a step in furtherance of the
investigation commenced
in Suo-Motu case, which
investigation is the subject
matter of the challenge in the
present LPA.”
FB, WHATSAPP HAD
APPROACHED HC
Facebook and WhatsApp
had approached the Division
bench through an appeal,
challenging single-judge
bench order dismissing
their pleas against the CCI

ing a CCI order for an inves-

sion to revive, restore,
preserve and maintain
ancient sites and protect
its cultural heritage.
The government has
devised a scheme for
‘Revival, Restoration,
Preservation and Main-

and efforts are being
made to ensure that it’s
implemented in letter

values, etc.
Jammu and Kashmir
has been connected
with the ‘Ek Bharat

other states and vice
versa. In the recent
past, many cultural ex-

connection that had
been missing during
the past 70 years.

He has got a good number of votes all over the country . But in Jharkhand, he was in a very bad condition. Leaders of both UPA and NDA deserted him. Usually, the MLAs and MPs of the state to which the candidate belongs, vote for them irrespective of the party line. But this time in Jharkhand, the reverse has happened. There are 81 MLAs and 14 MPs in the state, out of which Yashwant Sin- ha did not get a single MP’s vote. Only eight of the MLAs voted for him. This happened when two MPs in the state be- long to the UPA and close to 50 MLAs have the support of the JMM- led UPA government. In fact, the JMM, which is running the government in the state, had already announced to support Droupadi Murmu in the name of tribal community . Con- gress definitely support- ed Yashwant Sinha but Congress MLAs and the lone MP engaged in cross voting. This is also abigsetbackforAvinash Pande, the party’s new in-charge general secre- tary in the state, who triedhardtogetvotesfor Sinha, however, 12 Congress MLAs and one MP voted for Murmu. Sinha deserted in his own state by ‘political family’! PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION ALL 30 MLAS AND ONE MP OF JMM ALSO VOTED FOR MURMU AND 12 MPS AND 30 MLAS OF BJP AND ITS ALLIES ALSO VOTED FOR MURMU. IN THIS WAY, SINHA GOT THE REMAINDER OF THE CONGRESS VOTES, ALONG WITH AND NINE VOTES OF LEFT AND RJD Droupadi Murmu Yashwant Sinha OPPOSITION OBSTRUCTS DEVELOPMENT WORKS: MODI New Delhi: Prime Min- ister Narendra Modi on Monday accused the Op- position of obstructing development works, say- ingtheykeeptheirpoliti- calinterestsabovethatof society and the country . “Many times, the op- position parties put some obstacles in the government’s work as they could not imple- mentthedecisionstaken by them when they were in power,” Modi said ad- dressing virtually a pro- gramme on the 10th death anniversary of formerSamajwadiParty Rajya Sabha member Harmohan Singh Yadav. “Now, if they (deci- sions) are implemented, they oppose it. Cong calls meet ahead of Sonia’s 2nd appearance at the ED today New Delhi: A day ahead of Sonia Gan- dhi’s appearance at the Enforcement Directo- rate office here, the Congress on Monday has called a meeting of the party leaders to pre- pare for protests. Progressively, the fo- rex mop-up over the last 8 years has wit- nessed a steady and consistent improve- ment over the previous year since 2014 under the Narendra Modi led Union Government. During the erstwhile UPA-2 government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (not- ed economist) of the Indian National Con- gress, the forex hold- ings grew from $US 251 billion in 2008-2009 to $US 304 billion in 2013- 2014 (over six fiscal years), the Modi led NDA government has maintained a much higher and consistent forex growth levels an- nually. Since the BJP came to power in India in the 2014-2015 fiscal year ($US 341 bn), 2015- 2016 ($US 360 bn), 2016- 2017 ($US369 bn), 2017- 2018 ($US 424 bn); bar- ring the 2018-2019 fis- cal ($US 412 bn), the forex growth has con- sistently been main- tained. The growth levels were main- tained in 2019-2020 ($US 477bn), 2020-2021 ($US 561 bn), 2021-2022 (642 bn) with the first two quarters of the current fiscal year 2022-2023 already regis- tering $US 572 bn so far. Co-convenor of the BJP’s Maharashtra Vyapari Cell Mahen- dra Jain disagrees. Says he, “We are heav- ily dependent on forex for importing of oil and gold, although the sharp rupee trade ne- gotiations by India with many countries has already resulted in a rupee-rouble trade deal for oil im- ports from Russia, ed- ible and soybean oil imports from Indone- sia and now we are ne- gotiating a rupee cur- rency trade deal with Iran from where we have huge gas im- ports. Effectively the sanctions that were placed on Russia more recently, and on Iran earlier by the Euro-US axis have failed. India has shifted close to a quarter of its imports to rupee transactions which again is a big save and further bol- sters out forex re- serves each year.” Why do we need such a large pool of (forex) reserves although it is a contingency against oil imports? Forex reserves growth is an overhyped fact. Indian economy had faced a huge balance of payment crisis in 1991 and was able to leverage her gold reserves for an (int'l) bridge loan to overcome the crisis. We are a very large and vibrant economy where the manufacturing sector is very weak even when compared to middle income industrial countries. —Ravi Duggal, Fiscal sociologist While Europe (Euro) and China (Yuan) tried to similarly exit the $US hegemony in interna- tional transactions they con- ducted the huge dollar holdings they had made the exercise futile, Jain pointed out. On this fact, even Duggal agrees while remembering the Chinese efforts on the front. ABOUT EURO, YUAN DOLLAR

So wonderful that this watershed moment in history has come as we mark #AzadiKaAmritMahotsav. Kiren Rijiju @KirenRijiju An invaluable moment of history... On this day of the 25th July 2017, I had the privilege to receive former President Pranab Mukherjee da at his New Residence, 10 Rajaji Marg, New Delhi accompanied by the new Rastrapati hon’ble Ram Nath Kovind ji as part of the convention. TOP TWEETS CONG INFIGHTING MORE INTERESTING THAN FRICTIONS IN MEGHALAYA ecently, police in Meghalaya raided a resort owned by BJP leader Bernard Marak Rimpu, call- ing it a “brothel”. Police claimed to have rescued five minors, in- cluding a girl, from Rimpu Bagan and arrested 73 people. Marak has denied any wrongdo- ing and was defended by the state party unit which said that Marak was possibly a victim of political vendetta. Marak point- ed his finger at Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to allege that he was behind the raid. BJP is a minor ally in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance headed by National People’s Party. The BJP views it as an attempt to malign the party. Whatever the party may say, the alliance ap- pears to have hit a rough patch. Meghalaya being too distant for the media it is more focused on the infighting in the Con- gress in Karnataka where state Congress president DK Shivaku- mar and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah are keen to settle the leadership issue before 2023 Assembly elections. Their ambi- tions may hurt the party . R ope Francis will be in Canada to tender a personal apology on behalf of the Roman Catholic Church for its in in- volvement in physical, sexu- al, mental and emotional abuse of children of the coun- try’s Indigenous population comprising the Metis and In- uit over several decades. He had earlier expressed regret for the deplorable acts of Jes- uit priests when a delegation of Indigenous people met him at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City in April this year. Canada’s Indigenous community has been insist- ing on a personal apology by the Pope, although it will not remove the scars on people’s minds. The apology will be merely symbolic. In the name of “cultural as- similation” Catholic priests responsible for education forcefully took away about 150,000 Indigenous children from their families to live in church-run schools. Because of the abuse, thousands of them died. The horrific de- tails emerged after more than 1300 unmarked graves were found where the schools stood. As part of cultural as- similation children were barred from speaking their language, practicing their culture and traditions. That church misused its powers against the Indige- nous people of Canada is not the only instance of its kind. In 2015, Pope Francis apolo- gized for the “grave sins” committed by the church. He then said, “…Many grave sins were committed against the native people of America in the name of God…I humbly seek forgiveness…” In 2000, Pope John Paul II woremourningattiretoapolo- gize for centuries of violence and persecution against Jews, non-believers and the Indige- nous people of the colonised countries.Apologiesbychurch are certainly on the rise. Because of the abuse, thousands of them died P sadefenceanalyst,Ihavebeen critically following, observing and predicting the expected and the future of Russo - Ukraine conflict. After more than five months of impasse, the Eastern Europe is gripped by the most destructive Euro- pean conventional military conflict since World War II. The damage done to Ukraine ismosttragicthough,indirect- ly it affects the entire EU. It is not just the refugee inflow and the corresponding economic burden on European coun- tries, the ongoing war will have many other repercus- sions, world over. The Russian responsetoNATOsanctionsis notonlyresultinginwiderim- plicationsfortheglobalecono- my but disproportionately af- fecting poorer countries. If media reports are to be believed, Ukrainians appear to be losing unity amid mili- tary defeats in the Donbass and mounting economic cri- sis. The surge of patriotism that arose when the Russian army was close to Kiev ap- pears to have been exhaust- ed. Along with it, the nation- al consensus that saw all po- litical groups rallying behind the Ukrainian army seems to have disappeared. To counter the effects of sanctions, the Russian army has pivoted its strategy and appears to be concentrating on objectives of economic in- terest and by mid-June, Rus- sia occupied 125.000 sq kms of Ukrainian territory . The civil society and the Army are now not hopeful of a speedy victory against the invaders and even Zelensky himself has lost his optimism. If we go by the recent his- tory, we would learn that in the modern world, famines are man-made. The Russia - Ukraine war is a Suttle re- minder of this fact and now threatens millions of endan- gered people around the world with extreme hunger. Much to the trauma of the world, Ukraine remains the breadbasket for the world, ex- porting millions of tonnes of wheat, barleyandmaizeevery year. It is also a leader in sun- flower seeds export used for vegetable oil. But overnight, these commodities have van- ished from food stocks as Rus- siacontinueschockingthesea trade routes of Ukraine. The dominance of Black Sea by RussianNavyhasplungedthe global food markets into a tur- moil, with soaring prices, ex- port bans and shortages. Countries across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and even Latin America are reeling un- der the effects of this conflict. The threat to global food security is further aggravat- ed by the upheaval in fuel and fertiliser markets as, short- ages and price hikes reduce access to these vital inputs for farming community. Ag- riculturists believe that with- out urgent action, food pro- duction and crop yields will get slashed and may raise a frightening possibility of food crisis the world over in next 12 to 24 months and cause multiple famines. Shockingly , the World Food Programme’s latest analysis, completed in Jun - July re- veals there were 276 million severely hungry people marching towards starvation before the war. This number has risen to 345 million dur- ing the period of the Ukraine crisis.Thereportfurthersays that a staggering 50 million peoplein45countriesarenow just one step from famine. Paradoxically , this War has demonstrated how interde- pendent EU is on the country they impose sanctions upon. However, somecountrieshave already started detesting the NATO actions on Russia. As they understand how difficult it will be for them to beat the winters without availability of Russian gas. Kremlin con- trols 25% of world’s natural gas requirements and 18% of coalexports. While,European Unionimportsroughly43per- cent of its requirement of naturalgasfromRussia,mak- ing them heavily dependent onthesuperpower.Becauseof Putin’s decision to limit en- ergy exports to many nations, theconsequencesof theEuro- pean energy crisis have ex- panded and redefined the way in which Europe approaches energy efforts and its rela- tions with Moscow. Should it stand by Ukraine and NATO or, allow its citizens, industry and economy to grow by mendingfenceswithRussiais the moot question. The leadership of Europe is also fearful that the lavish deliveries of ‘lethal weapons’ from the US, UK and other NATO countries to Ukraine are finding their way to the dark web. The Ukrainian traders claim to offer not just small arms or body Armor on the dark web, but also such sophisticated hardware as Javelin and NLAW anti- tank systems or Phoenix Ghost and Switchblade ex- plosive drones that may dis- turb their eco subsystems. Its time, that world leaders come together by surrender- ing their own interest of dominance and arms sale to give priority to the very exist- ence and development of the human race. • 6. Sharat K Verma New Delhi: The results of the municipal elec- tions held in two phases of Madhya Pradesh are out. Both the major par- ties of the state are in- terpreting it in their own way before the pub- lic, but it is being inter- preted differently with- in both the parties. BJP leaders are interpreting this in two ways. Lead- ers close to Chief Min- ister Shivraj Singh Chouhan are calling it a big victory and they say that this has put an end to the speculation of changing the Chief Minister. In his sup- port, he is using the congratulations given by the Prime Minister. The second camp is ped- dling the narrative that last time not a single Congress mayor could win, while this time five mayors won. Last time, all 16 may- ors were from BJP, while this time there are only nine. In this way, discussions are being held to change the CM before next year’s assembly elec- tions. Although it is not known what the BJP high command will do, but from Narottam Mishra to Prahlad Pa- tel, many names, as potential CM, have also started to be floated around. There is a sepa- rate debate between Congress and BJP about this. Congress is calling it its big victory and has claimed that Kamal Nath will come to power again in next year’s elections. The party leaders maintain that in the elections held in 2015, not a single Congress mayor had won, then in 2018, Congress won, while this time five Congress mayors have won. The Congress has also won in Jyotiradi- tya Scindia’s strong- hold Gwalior and Nar- endra Singh Tomar’s stronghold Morena. On the other hand, BJP says that Congress has got half the victory from BJP despite all the efforts. Nine out of 16 mayors of the state belong to the BJP, while the Congress has five. Similarly, in these 16 municipal corpora- tions, the BJP has won 491 wards, while the Congress has won 274. The BJP has won 975 wards in 76 municipali- ties of the state, while the Congress has won in 571. Furthermore, the BJP has won 2,002 wards and the Con- gress in 1,087 wards of the state’s 225 councils. Will MP Municipal polls results bring an end to Shivraj’s CMship? Of course, the Te- sla and SpaceX CEO, and the richest man in the world, was speak- ing in context when he denied a report accus- ing him of having an affair with Google co- founder Sergey Brin’s wife Nicole Shanahan. A Wall Street Jour- nal report alleged that Musk ruined his friendship with Brin after his affair with Shanahan. The report mentions sources “fa- miliar with the situa- tion” who told WSJ that the couple filed for divorce earlier this year over “irreconcil- able differences”. Now, Musk has de- nied these accusations to say that he and Brin are still friends and that the report is based on “third-party ran- dom hearsay”. “This is total bs. Ser- gey and I are friends and were at a party to- gether last night! I’ve only seen Nicole twice in three years, both times with many other people around. Noth- ing romantic,” Musk tweeted responding to a Twitter account called Whole Mars Cat- alog that shared the WSJ report tagging Musk in the post. “Yeah, the character assassination attacks have reached a new level this year, but the articles are all noth- ing-burgers. I work crazy hours, so there just isn’t much time for shenanigans. None of the key people in- volved in these alleged wrongdoings were even interviewed!” Musk wrote on Twitter responding to another handle (Tesla Hype) which quote tweeted one of Musk’s older tweets from May this year about how politi- cal attacks against him would “escalate dra- matically”. And literally, to wrap things up, Musk added: “Haven’t even had sex in ages (sigh)”. The WSJ report alleg- es that Musk and Shan- ahan’s affair occurred at the Art Basel event in Miami just after Musk broke up with Claire Boucher (Grimes). Sources told the WSJ that Brin and Shanahan were sepa- rated but still living together then. A report from Insid- er revealed earlier this month that Musk had twins with a top execu- tive at Neuralink and a former Tesla Employ- ee Shivon Zillis. The twins were born just weeks before Musk and Boucher had their second child through surrogate, “bringing Musk’s number of known children to nine”, as The Verge pointed out. ‘NOTHING ROMANTIC’ ABOUT IT! The leaders identi- fied and agreed to work towards com- mon areas of mutual interest. The acro- nym ‘I2’ stands for India and Israel and ‘U2’ stands for US and UAE. I2U2 was first conceptualized during a meeting of the foreign ministers of the four countries in October last year. Not only the govern- ment synergies, the group will also aim to leverage private sector capital and ex- pertise for many ar- eas of economic co- operation. Each country will also have Sherpa-level in- teractions regularly. The I2U2 bloc will focus on joint invest- ments in six mutu- ally identified areas such as water, ener- gy, transportation, space, health, and food security. While some alli- ances are crucial for enhanced co-opera- tion on pressing is- sues plaguing the world, some of them became redundant over the years as they either failed or fell short in achiev- ing the ambitious goals they had set out. So, is there a need for one more such bloc and what are its geopolitical implications?
