WILL JOIN CONGRESS’S BHARAT JODO YATRA
WHEN IT COMES TO MAHA: SHARAD PAWAR
First India Bureau
Baramati: Hailing the
Congress’s Bharat Jodo
Yatra as an effort to
bring harmony in soci-
ety, NCP president
Sharad Pawar on Sun-
day said he would par-
ticipate in it enters Ma-
harashtra.
State Congress lead-
ers Ashok Chavan and
Balasaheb Thorat had
met him and extended
an invitation to partici-
pate in the Bharat Jodo
Yatra, a mass outreach
programme, when it en-
ters the state on No-
vember 07, he told re-
porters here.
The Congress’
Bharat Jodo Yatra is
scheduled to cover a
distance of 3,570 km in
150 days. It started on
September 07 from Kan-
yakumari in Tamil
Nadu and will conclude
in Jammu and Kash-
mir.
Senior Congress
leader Rahul Gandhi,
who is leading the
yatra, has so far cov-
ered four states--Tamil
Nadu, Kerala, Karna-
taka and Andhra
Pradesh.
Pawar said, “‘The
yatra is a Congress par-
ty programme. But
through this initiative,
an attempt is being
made to bring harmony
in the society. So some
of us from different
parties will join the
yatra wherever possi-
ble when it is in the
state.”

rashtra chief minister

war said, “It is good he
is travelling to meet
farmers. His health has
improved...why have
doubts? He should put
the demands of farm-
ers before the state and
central governments. If
the farmers benefit, it
is good.”

‘Downpour of announcements,
but drought in implementation’
Aurangabad (PTI):
Shiv Sena president
Uddhav Thackeray on
Sunday demanded the
Maharashtra govern-
ment declare a “wet
drought” in the state
and provide Rs50,000
per hectare as com-
pensation to farmers
affected by rains with-
out waiting for the loss
assessment reports.
In a dig at the Eknath
Shinde government,
Thackeray said there is
a downpour of an-
nouncements but a
“drought” in their im-
plementation as he in-
teracted with rain-hit
farmers in Aurangabad
district.
The former chief
minister was talking to
reporters after visiting
Pandharpur and Dahe-
gaon villages in the Au-
rangabaddistrictwhere
retreating rain dam-
aged crops.
Thackeray said the
state government must
take efforts to change
the relief criteria set by
the National Disaster
Response Fund as they
have become outdated.
He also said the state
government should fol-
low up with the Centre
on the implementation
of the “Beed pattern” of
crop insurance, also
calledthe80-110formula.
According to the sup-
porters of the “Beed
pattern”, the formula
gives benefits to farm-
ers and the state by way
of excess funds and to
the insurer by capping
the pay-outs.
Farmer Kisanrao
Dhonde (70) of Dahe-
gaon in Gangapur tehsil
said the heavy rains
brought about by the re-
treating monsoons have
destroyed his crops.
“My farm is spread
over 6.5 acres. I had
sown corn and cotton
and harvest time was
nearing. I had taken a
loan of Rs one lakh to
cover the cost of pro-
duction. Now I won’t
even 30% of this
amount from the sale of
whatever produce is
left,” he said.
Dhonde, whose farm
Thackeray visited, said
his brinjal and okra cul-
tivation has also rotted,
leaving his family with
a debt of Rs3 lakh.
“I have no money to
make repayments. The
state government must
help us,” he said.
Dahegaon sarpanch
Vikram Raut said loss
assessment surveys
have not been complet-
ed as yet in the area and
no aid from the govern-
ment has reached peo-
ple in the village so far.
The Maharashtra
cabinet on Thursday
approved a proposal to
waive crop loans of a
total of Rs964.15 crore
taken by farmers from
land development
banks. The assets and
properties of land de-
velopment banks will
be transferred to the
state government.

pour of the announcement, whereas there

Maha Yuti govt has reversed
half a dozen MVA decisions
First India Bureau
Mumbai: Maharash-
tra’s Eknath Shinde-
BJP government,
which recently com-
pleted 100 days in of-
fice, has so far stayed
or reversed at least
half a dozen deci-
sions taken by the
Maha Vikas Aghadi
(MVA) regime.
While the decision
on the Aarey Metro
car shed was among
the first, the most re-
cent was to restore
general consent to the
Central Bureau of In-
vestigation to investi-
gate cases in the state.
The latter is signifi-
cant since the then
Shiv Sena-led govern-
ment had withdrawn
consent to the agency
citing its “misuse to
settle political scores”.
Notably, after com-
ing to power in Novem-
ber 2019, the then MVA
government compris-
ing Shiv Sena, Nation-
alist Congress Party
(NCP), and Congress
scrapped certain poli-
cy decisions of its pre-
decessor BJP-Shiv
Sena government led
by Fadnavis.
The Shinde govern-
ment decided to bring
back the four policy
decisions taken by the
Fadnavis government
during 2014-2019 that
were subsequently
scrapped by the MVA
regime.
These decisions in-
clude restoring the vot-
ing rights of farmers
toAgricultureProduce
Marketing Committee
(APMC) markets, re-
starting pensions for
the people jailed dur-
ing the Emergency,
and electing village
heads and municipal

Sunday, but denied
rumours of a stampede-
like situation due to the
Diwali rush. “At 9 pm,

Nagpur: A man from
Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh
and six others from Nagpur
have been booked for
allegedly taking possession
of a house, a plot of land
and a flat belonging to a
woman cancer patient in
Nagpur, police said on
Sunday. Citing a complaint
filed by the woman’s
adoptive daughter, an official
said the accused—her
friends and relatives—had
allegedly registered a sale
deed and gift deed at the
office of Deputy Registrar in

Youth invents fuel-efficient
trailer with 40 tonne capacity
First India Bureau
Aurangabad: A
23-year-old man from
Marathwada has cre-
ated a fuel-efficient
trailer with a capac-
ity to carry goods
weighing up to 40
tonnes if attached to
a tractor.
While trailers at-
tached to tractors usu-
ally have two wheels
and can carry 25
tonnes, Akshay
Chavan has invented a
four-wheeler trailer
that uses a tractor’s en-
ergy and can carry up
to 40 tonnes.
Chavan, a resident of
Dongaon, said he was
working as a tractor
driver when he came
up with the idea to
make a self-drive trail-
er that can run on a
tractor’s energy. It con-
sumes less fuel and car-
ries more weight.
He worked on build-
ing a prototype over a
period of two years and
even took a loan of Rs5
lakh for the project.
Chavan’s efforts paid
off after his product
bagged a prize of
Rs25,000 in the recently
held “Startup Yatra”
conducted by the Ma-
harashtra government
in Jalna district.
“An ordinary trailer
can carry 25 tonnes,
whereas my invention
has a capacity to carry
40 tonnes on any type of
road. One needs to make
two trips or use two trol-
leys to carry that kind
of weight, but this self-
drive trailer can do it in
one go and in turn save
fuel,” said Chavan.
The young inventor
said he has been ap-
proaching various de-
partments to start com-
mercial production of
the trailer.
Ritesh Mishra, the
director of Marathwa-
da Accelerator for
Growth and Incubation
Council (MAGIC), said,
“The first prototype
model is ready. We are
working to ensure that
this product gets neces-
sary permissions for
further production.
The product bagged
a prize in the state gov-
ernment’s “Startup
Yatra”. The state gov-
ernment should help
nurture such talented
youngsters, he added.

TOXIC CHEMICALS: SECRET
INGREDIENT IN FIRECRACKERS
First India Bureau
Mumbai: City-based
Awaaz Foundation
has written to the
state government and
the police after a
chemical test revealed
the presence of toxic
substances in fire-
crackers, appealing
that the authorities
ensure that no fire-
crackers containing
chemicals banned by
the Supreme Court,
such as barium, were
distributed, sold or
used in Maharashtra.
The organization ana-
lysed the chemical con-
tents of commonly
available firecrackers
and found the presence
of toxic chemicals such
as arsenic, sulphur, bar-
ium and chlorine in
them, the foundation’s
convener Sumaira Ab-
dulali said.
In 2021, the presence
of barium was openly
displayed on the packag-
ing of firecrackers.
However, this year, none
of the boxes mentioned
the presence of barium,
The Supreme Court
had last year expressed
serious concerns about
the effects of hazardous
chemicals on people’s
health. It had placed on
record Awaaz Founda-
tion’s findings in its or-
der passed in October
last year, the NGO offi-
cial said.
The Apex court had
stated, “We again reiter-
ate the directions issued
by this court earlier re-
produced hereinabove
including banning the
use of barium salts in
firecrackers, manufac-
turingandsellingjoined
firecrackers and other

Any lapse on the part
of the state govern-

Plummeting pre-winter air
quality leaves Mum gasping
First India Bureau
Mumbai: As winter
approaches early in
Mumbai, residents
fear inhaling contam-
inated air and suffer-
ing from a variety of
pollution-related
health issues. Studies
suggest Mumbai’s air
quality is rapidly de-
teriorating.
According to the Air
Quality Life Index
(AQLI) report released
by of the Energy Policy
Institute, University of
Chicago, the exposure
to PM2.5 shortens the
average lifespan of a
person by 3.7 years in
Mumbai.
Mumbai has been
placed as the 14th most
polluted city in the
world with average
PM2.5 levels at 45.1mg/
cubic metre by the US-
based Health Effects
Institute and Global
Burden of Disease Pro-
ject of the Institute for
Health Metrics Eval-
uation collaborative
‘Air Quality and Health
in Cities’ report, re-
leased in August 2022.
The Greenpeace
South Asia’s Analysis
from 2021 ranks Mum-
bai as the fifth most
polluted in the world
with the highest num-
ber of fatalities (25,000)
attributable to air pol-
lution, with Delhi lead-
ing as the most con-
taminated megacity in
India.
“The Brihanmumbai
Municipal Corporation
(BMC) has sufficient
funds, but has taken lim-
ited actions to improve
air quality
. It should im-
mediately set up a mech-
anism to issue health
warnings whenever air
quality deteriorates as
air pollution is not only
an environmental haz-
ard, but also a serious
health issue,” said Bhag-
wanKesbhat,theCEOof
WaatavaranFoundation.
Apart from Mumbai,
cities such as Pune and
Nagpur also recorded
bad air quality
. The state
is perched high on the
pollution pedestal, with
97.60% of the state’s
12-crore people living in
areas with ‘hazardous
or unacceptable levels
of air pollution’.

ing of the earth’s crust,
and how fossils were
formed,” he said.
“Everyone has seen
on the Internet how

DESPITE LOST RITUALS
AND TRADITIONS,
FESTIVAL STILL UNITES
Festivals and traditions bind
us together. Rituals are
integral to one’s existence,
but we are forgetting the little
joys and essence of traditions
— which were to spread
hope and happiness. Across
cultures, festivals have always
brought societies and families
closer. Sadly, these cultural
practices — just part of our
collective memories now —
are dying. Traditions, which
are an intrinsic part of all
cultures, can be manifested
in forms of art, customs and
conventions passed from one
generation to another without
being structurally document-
ed but collectively owned.

in mind that the grand

Ayodhya is coming up
on the lines of Varanasi
with sparkling ghats, wid-

Mathura and Vrindavan
also being developed and
beautified, Uttar Pradesh
has become an important
state for pilgrimage. The
state government is aware
of the appeal of the trium-
virate of Ram, Krishna
and Shiva among Hindus

uses it as its unique sell-

tourists in countries like
South Korea, Thailand, In-

Religious tourism is ex-

tracting religious tourists
will eventually contribute

Shimla: Has the era of
Prem Kumar Dhumal
also ended after Shanta
Kumar in Himachal
Pradesh? This time
Dhumal has not been
made the candidate of
the assembly from the
Bharatiya Janata Party
.
Suspense was going on
for the last several days
regarding his name.
But his name is not
there in the first list of
62 candidates released
by the party and retired
Army Captain Ranjit
Singh has been nomi-
nated from the Sujan-
pur assembly seat.
Prem Kumar Dhumal
had contested last time
from Sujanpur seat and
was the chief ministe-
rial candidate from the
party’s side. BJP won
the entire state but
Dhumal lost the elec-
tion from Sujanpur
seat, after which Jai
Ram Thakur was made
the chief minister.
Since then it was be-
ing speculated that now
the Dhumal era is also
coming to an end. Any-
way, he is 78 years of
age and there is an un-
declared rule in the
party for the retirement
of leaders at 75 years.
Notably, the politics of
this small hilly state
used to revolve around
three faces for the last
several decades. Shanta
Kumar and Prem Ku-
mar Dhumal were from
BJP and Virbhadra
Singh was from Con-
gress. These three peo-
ple used to become the
Chief Minister. It is a
fact that from 1983 to
2017 i.e. 34 years, these
three leaders kept on
becoming the Chief
Minister, in turn.

TIME TO HANG BOOTS?
New Delhi (PTI): With
the successful placing
in orbit of 36 OneWeb
satellites on board the
Launch Vehicle Mark-
III (LVM-3) rocket, the
Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO) is
now eying a bigger
share in the global sat-
ellite launch market.
A recent Indian Space
Association and Ernst
and Young report had
pegged the global space
economy at USD 447 bil-
lion with the satellite
launchsegmentaccount-
ing for USD 6 billion.
ISRO has already
carved out a niche for
itself in satellite launch
segment with its old
warhorse Polar Satellite
Launch Vehicle (PSLV)
rocket earning the
space agency millions
of dollars in business.
With the LVM-3 rock-
et, capable of placing 10
tonne payloads in low
earth orbits, ISRO now
aims to launch heavier
satellites or multiple
smaller satellites.
Sunday’s launch of 36
satellites for OneWeb
had a combined weight
of over 5.7 tonnes, and
ISRO plans to repeat the
launch for another
batch of 36 satellites in
February next year.
“The next LVM-3 will
be ready by February
2023, when we plan to
carry out another
launch for OneWeb,”
ISRO chief S Somanath
said in an interaction.
“We want to do one
launch of LVM-3 every
three to four months de-
pending on the commer-
cial demand,” he said.
ISRO had bagged the
contract to launch One-
Web satellites in April
this year as the Russia-
Ukraine conflict put a
spanner in the UK-
based company’s plans
to launch satellites us-
ing Russian rockets
from the Baikonur
spaceport in Kazakh-
stan. Of OneWeb’s
planned constellation
of 648 satellites, Roscos-
mos had launched 428
before Ukraine conflict.

Chaturvedi, in a let-

October 14 highlighted
an incident of smoke
inside the cabin of a

On October 12, Spice-

CRUCIAL READ
Who among Nitish and Prashant Kishore is with BJP?
Sharat K Verma
New Delhi: An inter-
esting turn of event has
happened in Bihar.
Chief Minister Nitish
Kumar’s party is alleg-
ing that Prashant
Kishor is associated
with BJP and is
working for BJP, while
on the other hand,
Prashant Kishor is
claiming that Nitish
Kumar is in touch with
BJP and will join NDA
at any time.
Similarly, Nitish Ku-
mar had claimed that
Prashant Kishor him-
self had come to meet
him. Nitish had said
that if someone wants
to meet then how will
he refuse. In response,
Prashant said that Nit-
ish had called him and
again asked him to
work for his party, but
PK claimed that he re-
fused.
Think Prashant
Kishor has not become
a leader yet. He is run-
ning a ‘Suraaj’ cam-
paign and saying that
he will form a party by
taking the opinion of
the people. Good people
will meet only then he
will form a party. But
before that, he is failing
all the leaders in their
rhetoric.
However, the real
question is who among
PK and Nitish are really
with BJP, who is in
touch with BJP and
who can go with BJP?
Keep in mind that both
have been with the BJP
for a long time. PK had
worked as a strategist
for the BJP in the 2012
Gujarat elections and
the 2014 Lok Sabha elec-
tions, while Nitish Ku-
mar has been in the BJP
alliance for 24 years,
barring four years be-
tween 1995 and 2022.
Once he left the BJP,
he returned to the NDA.
But now he is saying
that he will never go
with BJP. Despite this,
what is the point of
PK’s claim?
Is he merely creating
suspicion towards Nit-
ish and trying to create
a rift in his ties with
RJD or positioning him-
self ? Does he have to
replace Nitish in Bihar,
for which he is tarnish-
ing his reputation?
Many interesting twists
will be seen in the com-
ing days and anything
is possible in Bihar be-
fore the next Lok Sabha
elections.

It was from this pre-
carious condition that
Virat had to revive In-
dia’s rapidly sinking
fortunes. In all-rounder
Hardik Pandya, Kohli
found a partner to pull
India out of disarray
and despair. The situa-

special and the former
skipper Kohli stitched
up a magnificent fifth-

they settled down, the
big shots began to flow.

HOWDIDTHAROORGETSOMANYVOTES?
Mahesh Sharma
New Delhi: Shashi
Tharoor, who chal-
lenged Mallikarjun
Kharge in the election
of Congress President,
got 1,072 votes. A total
of around 93 hundred
votes were cast, out of
which 419 votes became
invalid and 7,897 votes
went to Kharge. If we
look at the numbers,
Shashi Tharoor has got
more votes than Sharad
Pawar got in 1997. How-
ever, in terms of per-
centage, both have got
close to 12 percent votes.
It is also not a trivial
matter that Shashi Tha-
roor secured 12 per cent
of the vote. Everyone
knows that he is not as
popular as Sharad Pa-
warandnotasresource-
ful as him. Also, the
identity of any one
state or society is not at-
tached to him. Despite
this, he got the same
number of votes as Pa-
war.
Therefore, the ques-
tion is how did Tharoor
get so many votes? The
biggest reason for this
is that Sonia and Rahul
Gandhi did not oppose
him. It is known to all
that Mallikarjuna was
the official candidate of
the Gandhi family, even
though it was not an-
nounced. But just as
Kharge was not an-
nounced as the official
candidate, the first fam-
ily’s ‘opposition’ to Tha-
roor was also not an-
nounced. The message
was allowed to be cre-
ated about him that he
too is a candidate of the
high command. At one
stage, an image of Tha-
roor being a proxy can-
didate was also created.
Even when the Con-
gress directed that a
party functionary who
wanted to support a
candidate must resign
from office to ensure
fairness, Shashi Tha-
roor was appointed as
Chairman of the par-
liamentary committee
of the Ministry of
Chemicals and Fertiliz-
ers in the midst of the
election. He was earlier
the chairman of the
committee of the IT
ministry, but later, a
member of the Shiv
Sena’s Eknath Shinde
faction was made the
Chairman of that com-
mittee. In return, the
Congress was given the
Ministry of Chemicals
and Fertilizers, which
the Congress was ini-
tially reluctant to take.
But it finally accepted
it and made Tharoor its
chairman. This sent a
message that Tharoor
was also in the good
book of the high com-
mand. So, because of
this he got votes in
many places.

‘Riseintaxcollection
duetodemonetisation’
SAYS RBI MPC MEMBER
New Delhi (PTI): RBI
Monetary Policy Commit-
tee (MPC) member Ashima
Goyal has attributed the
rise in tax collections to de-
monetisation and said that
it will help the nation move
towards the ideal situation
where low taxes are levied
on a large base.
On November 8, 2016,
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi announced the de-
monetisation of old `1,000
and `500 banknotes and
one of the key objectives of
the unprecedented deci-
sion was to curb black
money flows and promote
digital payments.
Noting that demonetisa-
tion had short-term costs
but some long-term bene-
fits, Goyal said it enhanced
digitisation and formaliza-
tion in the economy and
reduced tax evasion, al-
though all this has further
to go. “It contributed to the
buoyancy in taxes the
country is benefitting from
today. This helps us move
towards the ideal of low
tax rates on a large base,”
she said.
The tax department on
October 9 said that the
gross collection of tax on
corporate and individual
earnings jumped nearly
24% so far in the current
fiscal year to `8.98 lakh
crore.
GST collections re-
mained above `1.40 lakh
crorefortheseventhmonth
in a row at `1.47 lakh crore
in September, a 26% in-
crease over last year, re-
flecting buoyancy in tax
collection.
Replying to a question on
Central Bank Digital Cur-
rency (CBDC), Goyal said
the objectives of the CBDC
are to reduce the use of
cash, and provide addition-
al functions to the existing
payment system rather
than replace it.

‘New owner will be free
to run IDBI Bank’
New Delhi (PTI): The gov-
ernment and state-owned
insurer LIC, who will con-
tinue to hold significant
shareholding in IDBI Bank
post its privatisation, will
not veto any proposals of
the new owner as part of
their plan to give the in-
coming promoters a free

The government earlier
this month invited bids for
the sale of 60.72% stake in
IDBI Bank, which is 45.48%
owned by the government
and 49.24% by the Life In-
surance Corporation of
India (LIC).
At the current price, sale
of 61% stake would fetch
about `29,000 crore to the
government.
The official said post-
privatisation, the govern-
ment and LIC shareholding
will come down to 34% but
they do not intend to move
in tandem to block any spe-
cial resolution proposed by
the new promoter.
This is with a view to as-
suaging the concerns of
investors.
“There should not be any
such concern. If we are
selling a 60.72% stake and
transferring management
control, it should be clear
to investors that we are not
interested in controlling
the institution and hence
will not oppose any resolu-
tion,” the official said.

Mumbai (PTI): Andhra,
Telangana, Rajasthan and
Punjab along with three
north-eastern states are re-
peatedly using the Reserve
Bank’s special short-term
liquidity windows instead
of market borrowings, in-
dicating their serious cash
imbalances, says a report.
The north-eastern states
which are over and again
using these facilities are
Manipur, Mizoram and
Nagaland.
The central bank offers
three short-term liquidity
windows -- special drawing
facility (SDF; for 5 working
days), ways and means ad-
vances (WMA, for 5 work-
ing days) and over draft
(OD, for 14 working days)
facilities to states to tide
over their liquidity needs.
One of the main reasons
for the states to use these
windows is the cheaper
pricing than market bor-
rowings. Till August, states
have availed SDF facility at
an average rate of 3.2-4.2%,
while state bonds are
priced at 7.8% or more.
Quarterly

38% to $22.71 million in
September succumbing to
intense competition in the
international markets.

. The data showed that
the exports dipped by 34%
in April, about 30% in May
,
about 6% in June, 26.62% in
July and 31.5% in August.
Karnataka Cashews
Manufacturers Associa-
tion Vice President Tukar-
am Prabhu said that with-
drawal of export incentives
under ‘Vishesh Krishi and
Gram Udyog Yojana’ too is
impacting the outbound
shipments.
“At present, we have no
incentives to push ship-
ments, though there is good
demand in global markets.
Our quality is much better
than Vietnamese cashew. It
is also a labour-intensive
sector,” Prabhu said.
He urged the govern-
ment to consider extend-
ing export incentives to
boost exports. According
to him, India’s edible cash-
ew kernel production
stood at 3,50,000-3,70,000
tonnes per year.
According to a cashew
exporter from Kerala, do-
mestic prices are 15 per
cent higher than the export
price, so traders are prefer-
ring to sell here. According
to the data of APEDA, ex-
ports were down 25.16% to
$113 million during April-
August this fiscal.

section of captains and
first officers of the airline
has expressed apprehen-

Nagpur govt school gets major upgrade, thanks to NGOs
First India Bureau
Nagpur: A ramshackle
village school in Nag-
pur district, which
had been catering to
200 students across
Classes I-V from three
villages with just two
classrooms and a non-
functioning restroom,
has been transformed
into a modern facility
thanks to the efforts
of young professionals
and businessmen.
The primary school
run by Nagpur Zilla
Parishad at Sukali vil-
lage of Hingna taluka
underwent a major
makeover after two
NGOs found out about
its poor condition, an
official said.
Nagpur Round Ta-
ble-83 (NRT-83) along
with Bridge the Gap
Foundation came up
with the idea to provide
the best possible infra-
structure and modern
facilities to the school.
The two NGOs found
out about the school in
January 2022 and decid-
ed to build it afresh with
modern amenities and,
after completing legal
formalities, began work
the very next month.
With Phase I done,
the school was inaugu-
rated on October 09.
NRT-83 chairman Ab-
hay Agrawal said, “In
the first phase, we con-
structed the ground
floor with three class-
rooms, which have
desks. One of the class-
rooms has been made
into a computer lab and
it has a projector as
well. The school now
also has separate re-
strooms for boys and
girls,” he said.
Agrawal said the
school was built at ap-
proximately Rs40 lakh,
which was collected
through corporate
funding and personal
donations.
Phase II of the pro-
ject will likely see the
construction of addi-
tional classrooms and a
computer lab, he added.
Meanwhile, Sukali
village sarpanch
Dinesh Dengre said
the NGO Bridge the
Gap Foundation con-
ducts classes for sci-
ence, maths and Eng-
lish speaking for stu-
dents from pre-prima-
ry to graduation level
in the village.
“The two organiza-
tions together have
built a beautiful school
in the village with
good infrastructure.
People not just from
our village, but even
from surrounding vil-

Thane court acquits 3
in dowry death case
First India Bureau
Thane: A local court
has acquitted a
37-year-old man, his
mother and sister in a
case of causing death
of his wife and sub-
jecting her to cruelty
for dowry.
In the order passed
on October 20, Addi-
tional Sessions Judge
PM Gupta gave the ben-
efit of doubt to the ac-
cused while observing
that the prosecution
failed to prove the
charges against them.
On Saturday, a copy
of the order was made
available. The prosecu-
tion told the court that
the deceased woman got
married to the man
here in February 2012
and lived with her in-
laws in Bhiwandi town
of Thane. After some
days, they allegedly
forced the victim to get
money from her par-
ents. When she refused,
she was mentally and
physically harassed
and the man threatened
to divorce her. Follow-
ing this, the woman
committed suicide in
April 2015, the prosecu-
tion told the court.
A case was later reg-
istered against her
husband, mother-in-
law (80) and sister-in-
law (35) under Indian
Penal Code Sections
304B (dowry death),
498A (husband or his
relative subjecting
woman to cruelty), 323
(voluntarily causing
hurt), 504 (intentional
insult with intent to
provoke breach of
peace) and 506 (crimi-
nal intimidation).
In his order, the judge
noted that the prosecu-
tion examined the de-
ceased’s brother and
father who deposed that
after the marriage there
were disputes between
the deceased and the ac-
cused on one or two oc-
casions over domestic
issues and they were
resolved amicably
.

HC gives bail to Nashik woman
arrested for niece’s ‘murder’
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Bom-
bay High Court re-
cently granted bail
to a woman, who
hails from Nashik,
arrested for alleged-
ly murdering her
niece in 2020.
A single judge bench
of Justice Prakash D
Naik on October 19
passed an order on the
bail plea of accused
Ahilyabai Vishnu Kale,
who was arrested for of-
fences punishable un-
der sections 302 (mur-
der) and 314 (punish-
ment for an act causing
death of a woman with
an intention to cause
the miscarriage of a
woman with child). The
FIR was registered at
Yeola City police sta-
tion in Nashik.
Ahilyabai was ar-
rested after Sangitabai
Bhorkade, her real sis-
ter, lodged a complaint
on August 01, 2020 that
her daughter Shakun-
tala was assaulted by
Ahilyabai causing her
death.
The deceased had
been living with the ac-
cused, who was her ma-
ternal aunt, following a
quarrel with her hus-
band. While staying
with her aunt, the de-
ceased allegedly devel-
oped a relationship
with her son and be-
came pregnant.
The court was told
that on the day of the
incident on July 13,
2020, Ahilyabai and
Sangitabai had a quar-
rel over the latter claim-
ing the accused’s son
was responsible for
pregnancy. In a fit of
rage, Ahilyabai alleg-
edly dragged Shakun-
tala, who was sleeping
on a cot, by holding her
legs. The deceased fell
down on the floor and
sustained injuries to
her head and became
unconscious. She was
taken to hospital by
Ahilyabai, where she
died during treatment.
Ahilyabai’s advocate
HeenaMistrysubmitted
that she was in custody
for over two years since
August 01, 2020 while
the probe was complete
with chargesheet filed
and that she has been
falsely implicated in the
case. Mistry said there
was delay in lodging of
FIRandthatthemedical
case papers indicate the
victim had fallen in the
bathroom.
SC allows parties to inspect
Navlakha’s medical reports
First India Bureau
New Delhi: The Su-
preme Court has al-
lowed the parties to
inspect the reports
filed by the hospital
regarding the health
status of Gautam
Navlakha (70), ac-
cused in the Bhima
Koregaon case.
A bench, compris-
ing of Justices KM Jo-
seph and Hrishikesh
Roy
, posted the matter
for hearing on Novem-
ber 09 after Solicitor
GeneralTusharMehta
toldthecourtthatNav-
lakha is being treated
in Mumbai’s Jaslok
hospital. The court
was hearing a plea of
Navlakha seeking di-
rection that he be
placedunderhousear-
rest instead of judicial
custody in Taloja jail.
Since the hospital
has filed the report,
the bench ordered,
“Parties are granted
liberty to inspect the
medical reports by Ja-
slok hospital.”
Earlier, the apex
court had allowed
the Superintendent
of Taloja prison to
shift jailed activist
Navlakha to Mum-
bai’s Jaslok hospital
for a check-up and
treatment. It had
said that receiving
medical treatment is
a prisoner’s funda-
mental right.
Navlakha had told
the bench that he has
colon cancer and re-
quires a colonoscopy
and also a check for
skin allergies and den-
tal issues.
National Investiga-
tion Agency had op-
posed Navlakha’s re-
quest for shifting him
to house arrest and for
a medical check-up.
Navlakha had
moved the top court
challenging the April
26 order of the Bom-
bay High Court which
had dismissed his plea
for house arrest over
apprehensions of lack
of adequate medical
and other basic facili-
ties in Taloja jail near
Mumbai where he is
currently lodged.

When the victim was taken for
treatment there are notings which
indicate that she had slipped in
the bathroom and suffered inju-
ries. There has been a delay in lodging the
FIR. The applicant is in custody for a peri-
od of about two years. Considering the fac-
tual aspects, bail can be granted to the ap-
plicant and application is allowed.

MUMBAI, MONDAY,
OCTOBER 24, 2022
ne of the most
important reli-
gious celebra-
tions in India,
Diwali also spelt
Divali takes
place during a
five-day period from the
thirteenth day of the
dark half of the lunar
month Ashvina to the
second day of the light
half of the lunar month
Kartika. The phrase
Deepavali, which means
“row of lights” in San-
skrit, is where the name
originates. Generally
speaking, the event rep-
resents the triumph of
light over darkness. On
October 24, 2022, a holi-
day called the third day
of Diwali will be ob-
served.
Diwali celebrations
vary based on geogra-
phy and culture. The
most popular Hindu tra-
dition is burning diyas,
which are little earthen-
ware lamps filled with
oil, on the night of the
new moon to call the
goddess of riches Lak-
shmi to one’s side. Di-
wali’s essence lies in the
sloka, ‘Tamaso ma jy-
otirgamaya’ which
means ‘Lead me from
darkness to light’, As
per the Vedanta, every
pious individual has to
fill his heart with the oil
of love, light the wick
with the knowledge of
Truth and ward off in-
cognizance. It further
states that we can ignite
a light in many hearts
just like a Diya which
can light many Diyas.
This is also the festival
when sweets entice us
all day long.
The pious festival de-
picts the important mes-
sage of life which says
the divine light burns
within us and all around
us by eradicating the
darkness of ignorance
and other ills wreaking
havoc on humankind,
may this Diwali offer
pleasure and happiness
to everybody. Let the
Lights of Joy shine
throughout the world.
This Deepawali let us light our hearts with compassion, love and
care for all, beyond region, religion and borders!

  • 2. ‘Downpour of announcements, but drought in implementation’ Aurangabad (PTI): Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday demanded the Maharashtra govern- ment declare a “wet drought” in the state and provide Rs50,000 per hectare as com- pensation to farmers affected by rains with- out waiting for the loss assessment reports. In a dig at the Eknath Shinde government, Thackeray said there is a downpour of an- nouncements but a “drought” in their im- plementation as he in- teracted with rain-hit farmers in Aurangabad district. The former chief minister was talking to reporters after visiting Pandharpur and Dahe- gaon villages in the Au- rangabaddistrictwhere retreating rain dam- aged crops. Thackeray said the state government must take efforts to change the relief criteria set by the National Disaster Response Fund as they have become outdated. He also said the state government should fol- low up with the Centre on the implementation of the “Beed pattern” of crop insurance, also calledthe80-110formula. According to the sup- porters of the “Beed pattern”, the formula gives benefits to farm- ers and the state by way of excess funds and to the insurer by capping the pay-outs. Farmer Kisanrao Dhonde (70) of Dahe- gaon in Gangapur tehsil said the heavy rains brought about by the re- treating monsoons have destroyed his crops. “My farm is spread over 6.5 acres. I had sown corn and cotton and harvest time was nearing. I had taken a loan of Rs one lakh to cover the cost of pro- duction. Now I won’t even 30% of this amount from the sale of whatever produce is left,” he said. Dhonde, whose farm Thackeray visited, said his brinjal and okra cul- tivation has also rotted, leaving his family with a debt of Rs3 lakh. “I have no money to make repayments. The state government must help us,” he said. Dahegaon sarpanch Vikram Raut said loss assessment surveys have not been complet- ed as yet in the area and no aid from the govern- ment has reached peo- ple in the village so far. The Maharashtra cabinet on Thursday approved a proposal to waive crop loans of a total of Rs964.15 crore taken by farmers from land development banks. The assets and properties of land de- velopment banks will be transferred to the state government. Uddhav slams Shinde govt, demands ‘wet drought’ be declared in Maha This state government is a celebration-lov- ing government. There is an excess down- pour of the announcement, whereas there is a drought in their implementation. Events should be celebrated but the government should see the people in the state are at least satisfied. —Uddhav Thackeray, Shiv Sena president Maha Yuti govt has reversed half a dozen MVA decisions First India Bureau Mumbai: Maharash- tra’s Eknath Shinde- BJP government, which recently com- pleted 100 days in of- fice, has so far stayed or reversed at least half a dozen deci- sions taken by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) regime. While the decision on the Aarey Metro car shed was among the first, the most re- cent was to restore general consent to the Central Bureau of In- vestigation to investi- gate cases in the state. The latter is signifi- cant since the then Shiv Sena-led govern- ment had withdrawn consent to the agency citing its “misuse to settle political scores”. Notably, after com- ing to power in Novem- ber 2019, the then MVA government compris- ing Shiv Sena, Nation- alist Congress Party (NCP), and Congress scrapped certain poli- cy decisions of its pre- decessor BJP-Shiv Sena government led by Fadnavis. The Shinde govern- ment decided to bring back the four policy decisions taken by the Fadnavis government during 2014-2019 that were subsequently scrapped by the MVA regime. These decisions in- clude restoring the vot- ing rights of farmers toAgricultureProduce Marketing Committee (APMC) markets, re- starting pensions for the people jailed dur- ing the Emergency, and electing village heads and municipal council presidents di- rectly from the people. According to the complaint filed by A Wankhede (73), “Anil Hedau” responded to the former’s advertisement on a property website, claiming to be a recently transferred airport security officer looking for a house. He asked Wankhede for his bank account details to “deposit Rs40,000 as advance”, a Beltarodi police official said. Wankhede sent him the details, only to later find Rs1.60 lakh missing. MAN DIES AT PUNE RLY STATION, COPS DENY RUMOURS OF DIWALI STAMPEDE Pune: A 35-year-old man died after he collapsed coughing at Pune railway station on Saturday, a police official said on Sunday, but denied rumours of a stampede- like situation due to the Diwali rush. “At 9 pm, while entering platform number 1 through the security gate, Sajan Manjhi—who was reportedly suffering from TB—started coughing and collapsed about 200m away from the main platform. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead,” an official said. 7 BOOKED FOR GRABBING PROPERTIES OF AILING WOMAN Nagpur: A man from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and six others from Nagpur have been booked for allegedly taking possession of a house, a plot of land and a flat belonging to a woman cancer patient in Nagpur, police said on Sunday. Citing a complaint filed by the woman’s adoptive daughter, an official said the accused—her friends and relatives—had allegedly registered a sale deed and gift deed at the office of Deputy Registrar in Khamla. A case of criminal breach of trust and cheating has been registered against the seven accused. While trailers at- tached to tractors usu- ally have two wheels and can carry 25 tonnes, Akshay Chavan has invented a four-wheeler trailer that uses a tractor’s en- ergy and can carry up to 40 tonnes. Chavan, a resident of Dongaon, said he was working as a tractor driver when he came up with the idea to make a self-drive trail- er that can run on a tractor’s energy. It con- sumes less fuel and car- ries more weight. He worked on build- ing a prototype over a period of two years and even took a loan of Rs5 lakh for the project. Chavan’s efforts paid off after his product bagged a prize of Rs25,000 in the recently held “Startup Yatra” conducted by the Ma- harashtra government in Jalna district. “An ordinary trailer can carry 25 tonnes, whereas my invention has a capacity to carry 40 tonnes on any type of road. One needs to make two trips or use two trol- leys to carry that kind of weight, but this self- drive trailer can do it in one go and in turn save fuel,” said Chavan. The young inventor said he has been ap- proaching various de- partments to start com- mercial production of the trailer. Ritesh Mishra, the director of Marathwa- da Accelerator for Growth and Incubation Council (MAGIC), said, “The first prototype model is ready. We are working to ensure that this product gets neces- sary permissions for further production. The product bagged a prize in the state gov- ernment’s “Startup Yatra”. TOXIC CHEMICALS: SECRET INGREDIENT IN FIRECRACKERS First India Bureau Mumbai: City-based Awaaz Foundation has written to the state government and the police after a chemical test revealed the presence of toxic substances in fire- crackers, appealing that the authorities ensure that no fire- crackers containing chemicals banned by the Supreme Court, such as barium, were distributed, sold or used in Maharashtra. The organization ana- lysed the chemical con- tents of commonly available firecrackers and found the presence of toxic chemicals such as arsenic, sulphur, bar- ium and chlorine in them, the foundation’s convener Sumaira Ab- dulali said. In 2021, the presence of barium was openly displayed on the packag- ing of firecrackers. However, this year, none of the boxes mentioned the presence of barium, The Supreme Court had last year expressed serious concerns about the effects of hazardous chemicals on people’s health. It had placed on record Awaaz Founda- tion’s findings in its or- der passed in October last year, the NGO offi- cial said. The Apex court had stated, “We again reiter- ate the directions issued by this court earlier re- produced hereinabove including banning the use of barium salts in firecrackers, manufac- turingandsellingjoined firecrackers and other directions issued by this Court reproduced here- inabove. Studies suggest Mumbai’s air quality is rapidly de- teriorating. According to the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) report released by of the Energy Policy Institute, University of Chicago, the exposure to PM2.5 shortens the average lifespan of a person by 3.7 years in Mumbai. Mumbai has been placed as the 14th most polluted city in the world with average PM2.5 levels at 45.1mg/ cubic metre by the US- based Health Effects Institute and Global Burden of Disease Pro- ject of the Institute for Health Metrics Eval- uation collaborative ‘Air Quality and Health in Cities’ report, re- leased in August 2022. This time Dhumal has not been made the candidate of the assembly from the Bharatiya Janata Party . Suspense was going on for the last several days regarding his name. But his name is not there in the first list of 62 candidates released by the party and retired Army Captain Ranjit Singh has been nomi- nated from the Sujan- pur assembly seat. Prem Kumar Dhumal had contested last time from Sujanpur seat and was the chief ministe- rial candidate from the party’s side. New Delhi (PTI): With the successful placing in orbit of 36 OneWeb satellites on board the Launch Vehicle Mark- III (LVM-3) rocket, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is now eying a bigger share in the global sat- ellite launch market. A recent Indian Space Association and Ernst and Young report had pegged the global space economy at USD 447 bil- lion with the satellite launchsegmentaccount- ing for USD 6 billion. ISRO has already carved out a niche for itself in satellite launch segment with its old warhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket earning the space agency millions of dollars in business. With the LVM-3 rock- et, capable of placing 10 tonne payloads in low earth orbits, ISRO now aims to launch heavier satellites or multiple smaller satellites. Sunday’s launch of 36 satellites for OneWeb had a combined weight of over 5.7 tonnes, and ISRO plans to repeat the launch for another batch of 36 satellites in February next year. “The next LVM-3 will be ready by February 2023, when we plan to carry out another launch for OneWeb,” ISRO chief S Somanath said in an interaction. “We want to do one launch of LVM-3 every three to four months de- pending on the commer- cial demand,” he said. ISRO had bagged the contract to launch One- Web satellites in April this year as the Russia- Ukraine conflict put a spanner in the UK- based company’s plans to launch satellites us- ing Russian rockets from the Baikonur spaceport in Kazakh- stan. • 7. CRUCIAL READ Who among Nitish and Prashant Kishore is with BJP? Sharat K Verma New Delhi: An inter- esting turn of event has happened in Bihar. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s party is alleg- ing that Prashant Kishor is associated with BJP and is working for BJP, while on the other hand, Prashant Kishor is claiming that Nitish Kumar is in touch with BJP and will join NDA at any time. Similarly, Nitish Ku- mar had claimed that Prashant Kishor him- self had come to meet him. Nitish had said that if someone wants to meet then how will he refuse. In response, Prashant said that Nit- ish had called him and again asked him to work for his party, but PK claimed that he re- fused. Think Prashant Kishor has not become a leader yet. He is run- ning a ‘Suraaj’ cam- paign and saying that he will form a party by taking the opinion of the people. Good people will meet only then he will form a party. But before that, he is failing all the leaders in their rhetoric. However, the real question is who among PK and Nitish are really with BJP, who is in touch with BJP and who can go with BJP? Keep in mind that both have been with the BJP for a long time. PK had worked as a strategist for the BJP in the 2012 Gujarat elections and the 2014 Lok Sabha elec- tions, while Nitish Ku- mar has been in the BJP alliance for 24 years, barring four years be- tween 1995 and 2022. Once he left the BJP, he returned to the NDA. But now he is saying that he will never go with BJP. Despite this, what is the point of PK’s claim? Is he merely creating suspicion towards Nit- ish and trying to create a rift in his ties with RJD or positioning him- self ? Does he have to replace Nitish in Bihar, for which he is tarnish- ing his reputation? Many interesting twists will be seen in the com- ing days and anything is possible in Bihar be- fore the next Lok Sabha elections. Kohli masterclass powers India to thrilling win over Pak Siddhaarth Mahan Virat Kohli produced one of the most memo- rable knocks in the his- tory of the T20 World Cup and powered India to a dramatic four-wick- et win over arch rivals Pakistan in an epic clash at Melbourne. Kohli’s sparkling in- nings not only steered India to a historic vic- torybutalsoenabledthe ‘Men in Blue’ to exact full toll on the ‘Men in Green’ who had ham- mered them by10-wick- ets in last year’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. King Kohli’s splendid unbeaten fifty was a masterclass in T20 bat- ting.Justthecoldstatis- ticof scoring82runsoff 53 balls in a tight, tense battle reflects the quali- ty of the knock. But far more than the runs scored, was the manner inwhichViratpacedhis entireinningsandshift- ed gears when the going got really tough in the final overs. ThoughPakistanhad set a rather modest 160 targetinSunday’sshow- down, it became far tougher as India lost skipper Rohit Sharma (4), KL Rahul (4), Suryakumar Yadav (15) and Axar Patel (2) in quick succession. With India tottering at 31 for 4,Pakistanseemedclear favourites as their fear- some bowling attack was firing on all cylin- ders. It was from this pre- carious condition that Virat had to revive In- dia’s rapidly sinking fortunes. In all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Kohli found a partner to pull India out of disarray and despair. The situa- tion needed something special and the former skipper Kohli stitched up a magnificent fifth- wicketstandof 113from 78 balls. The duo began the repair job with sin- gles and twos and as they settled down, the big shots began to flow. Particularlymemorable was the 12th over of left arm spinner Nawaz whereHardikandKohli hit three majestic sixes and stole 20 invaluable runs. The tide had be- gun to turn. Despite the recovery engineered by Kohli’s aggression and Pan- dya’s pluck, Pakistan still had the edge for most of the chase and were favourites to win till the 15th over. As the Kohli-Pandyaduocould only muster 12 runs combined in the 16th and 17th overs, the odds seemed stacked even further. Kohli, however, had different ideas and his steely resolve and sheer brilliance in the finalfewoversultimate- ly helped India to turn the tables. Mahesh Sharma New Delhi: Shashi Tharoor, who chal- lenged Mallikarjun Kharge in the election of Congress President, got 1,072 votes. A total of around 93 hundred votes were cast, out of which 419 votes became invalid and 7,897 votes went to Kharge. If we look at the numbers, Shashi Tharoor has got more votes than Sharad Pawar got in 1997. How- ever, in terms of per- centage, both have got close to 12 percent votes. It is also not a trivial matter that Shashi Tha- roor secured 12 per cent of the vote. Everyone knows that he is not as popular as Sharad Pa- warandnotasresource- ful as him. Also, the identity of any one state or society is not at- tached to him. Despite this, he got the same number of votes as Pa- war. Therefore, the ques- tion is how did Tharoor get so many votes? The biggest reason for this is that Sonia and Rahul Gandhi did not oppose him. It is known to all that Mallikarjuna was the official candidate of the Gandhi family, even though it was not an- nounced. But just as Kharge was not an- nounced as the official candidate, the first fam- ily’s ‘opposition’ to Tha- roor was also not an- nounced. The message was allowed to be cre- ated about him that he too is a candidate of the high command. At one stage, an image of Tha- roor being a proxy can- didate was also created. Even when the Con- gress directed that a party functionary who wanted to support a candidate must resign from office to ensure fairness, Shashi Tha- roor was appointed as Chairman of the par- liamentary committee of the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertiliz- ers in the midst of the election. He was earlier the chairman of the committee of the IT ministry, but later, a member of the Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde faction was made the Chairman of that com- mittee. In return, the Congress was given the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, which the Congress was ini- tially reluctant to take. But it finally accepted it and made Tharoor its chairman. This sent a message that Tharoor was also in the good book of the high com- mand. So, because of this he got votes in many places. —PHOTO BY PTI Inderjit Singh Pranay Singh INDIA 06 MUMBAI | MONDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2022 www.firstindia.co.in I https://firstindia.co.in/epapers/mumbai I twitter.com/thefirstindia facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia

On November 8, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the de- monetisation of old `1,000 and `500 banknotes and one of the key objectives of the unprecedented deci- sion was to curb black money flows and promote digital payments. Noting that demonetisa- tion had short-term costs but some long-term bene- fits, Goyal said it enhanced digitisation and formaliza- tion in the economy and reduced tax evasion, al- though all this has further to go. “It contributed to the buoyancy in taxes the country is benefitting from today. This helps us move towards the ideal of low tax rates on a large base,” she said. The government earlier this month invited bids for the sale of 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank, which is 45.48% owned by the government and 49.24% by the Life In- surance Corporation of India (LIC). At the current price, sale of 61% stake would fetch about `29,000 crore to the government. The official said post- privatisation, the govern- ment and LIC shareholding will come down to 34% but they do not intend to move in tandem to block any spe- cial resolution proposed by the new promoter. This is with a view to as- suaging the concerns of investors. “There should not be any such concern. The central bank offers three short-term liquidity windows -- special drawing facility (SDF; for 5 working days), ways and means ad- vances (WMA, for 5 work- ing days) and over draft (OD, for 14 working days) facilities to states to tide over their liquidity needs. One of the main reasons for the states to use these windows is the cheaper pricing than market bor- rowings. The data showed that the exports dipped by 34% in April, about 30% in May , about 6% in June, 26.62% in July and 31.5% in August. Karnataka Cashews Manufacturers Associa- tion Vice President Tukar- am Prabhu said that with- drawal of export incentives under ‘Vishesh Krishi and Gram Udyog Yojana’ too is impacting the outbound shipments. “At present, we have no incentives to push ship- ments, though there is good demand in global markets. Our quality is much better than Vietnamese cashew. It is also a labour-intensive sector,” Prabhu said. He urged the govern- ment to consider extend- ing export incentives to boost exports. According to him, India’s edible cash- ew kernel production stood at 3,50,000-3,70,000 tonnes per year. According to a cashew exporter from Kerala, do- mestic prices are 15 per cent higher than the export price, so traders are prefer- ring to sell here. Nagpur govt school gets major upgrade, thanks to NGOs First India Bureau Nagpur: A ramshackle village school in Nag- pur district, which had been catering to 200 students across Classes I-V from three villages with just two classrooms and a non- functioning restroom, has been transformed into a modern facility thanks to the efforts of young professionals and businessmen. The primary school run by Nagpur Zilla Parishad at Sukali vil- lage of Hingna taluka underwent a major makeover after two NGOs found out about its poor condition, an official said. Nagpur Round Ta- ble-83 (NRT-83) along with Bridge the Gap Foundation came up with the idea to provide the best possible infra- structure and modern facilities to the school. The two NGOs found out about the school in January 2022 and decid- ed to build it afresh with modern amenities and, after completing legal formalities, began work the very next month. With Phase I done, the school was inaugu- rated on October 09. NRT-83 chairman Ab- hay Agrawal said, “In the first phase, we con- structed the ground floor with three class- rooms, which have desks. One of the class- rooms has been made into a computer lab and it has a projector as well. The school now also has separate re- strooms for boys and girls,” he said. Agrawal said the school was built at ap- proximately Rs40 lakh, which was collected through corporate funding and personal donations. Phase II of the pro- ject will likely see the construction of addi- tional classrooms and a computer lab, he added. Meanwhile, Sukali village sarpanch Dinesh Dengre said the NGO Bridge the Gap Foundation con- ducts classes for sci- ence, maths and Eng- lish speaking for stu- dents from pre-prima- ry to graduation level in the village. “The two organiza- tions together have built a beautiful school in the village with good infrastructure. People not just from our village, but even from surrounding vil- lages are happy with the school’s transfor- mation,” Dengre said. A single judge bench of Justice Prakash D Naik on October 19 passed an order on the bail plea of accused Ahilyabai Vishnu Kale, who was arrested for of- fences punishable un- der sections 302 (mur- der) and 314 (punish- ment for an act causing death of a woman with an intention to cause the miscarriage of a woman with child). The FIR was registered at Yeola City police sta- tion in Nashik. Ahilyabai was ar- rested after Sangitabai Bhorkade, her real sis- ter, lodged a complaint on August 01, 2020 that her daughter Shakun- tala was assaulted by Ahilyabai causing her death. The deceased had been living with the ac- cused, who was her ma- ternal aunt, following a quarrel with her hus- band. While staying with her aunt, the de- ceased allegedly devel- oped a relationship with her son and be- came pregnant. The court was told that on the day of the incident on July 13, 2020, Ahilyabai and Sangitabai had a quar- rel over the latter claim- ing the accused’s son was responsible for pregnancy. In a fit of rage, Ahilyabai alleg- edly dragged Shakun- tala, who was sleeping on a cot, by holding her legs. The deceased fell down on the floor and sustained injuries to her head and became unconscious. She was taken to hospital by Ahilyabai, where she died during treatment. SC allows parties to inspect Navlakha’s medical reports First India Bureau New Delhi: The Su- preme Court has al- lowed the parties to inspect the reports filed by the hospital regarding the health status of Gautam Navlakha (70), ac- cused in the Bhima Koregaon case. A bench, compris- ing of Justices KM Jo- seph and Hrishikesh Roy , posted the matter for hearing on Novem- ber 09 after Solicitor GeneralTusharMehta toldthecourtthatNav- lakha is being treated in Mumbai’s Jaslok hospital. The court was hearing a plea of Navlakha seeking di- rection that he be placedunderhousear- rest instead of judicial custody in Taloja jail. Since the hospital has filed the report, the bench ordered, “Parties are granted liberty to inspect the medical reports by Ja- slok hospital.” Earlier, the apex court had allowed the Superintendent of Taloja prison to shift jailed activist Navlakha to Mum- bai’s Jaslok hospital for a check-up and treatment. It had said that receiving medical treatment is a prisoner’s funda- mental right. Navlakha had told the bench that he has colon cancer and re- quires a colonoscopy and also a check for skin allergies and den- tal issues. National Investiga- tion Agency had op- posed Navlakha’s re- quest for shifting him to house arrest and for a medical check-up. Navlakha had moved the top court challenging the April 26 order of the Bom- bay High Court which had dismissed his plea for house arrest over apprehensions of lack of adequate medical and other basic facili- ties in Taloja jail near Mumbai where he is currently lodged. The phrase Deepavali, which means “row of lights” in San- skrit, is where the name originates. Generally speaking, the event rep- resents the triumph of light over darkness. On October 24, 2022, a holi- day called the third day of Diwali will be ob- served. Diwali celebrations vary based on geogra- phy and culture. The most popular Hindu tra- dition is burning diyas, which are little earthen- ware lamps filled with oil, on the night of the new moon to call the goddess of riches Lak- shmi to one’s side. Di- wali’s essence lies in the sloka, ‘Tamaso ma jy- otirgamaya’ which means ‘Lead me from darkness to light’, As per the Vedanta, every pious individual has to fill his heart with the oil of love, light the wick with the knowledge of Truth and ward off in- cognizance. It further states that we can ignite a light in many hearts just like a Diya which can light many Diyas. This is also the festival when sweets entice us all day long. The pious festival de- picts the important mes- sage of life which says the divine light burns within us and all around us by eradicating the darkness of ignorance and other ills wreaking havoc on humankind, may this Diwali offer pleasure and happiness to everybody. Let the Lights of Joy shine throughout the world. This Deepawali let us light our hearts with compassion, love and care for all, beyond region, religion and borders!
