MEETING IN DELHI ACHIEVED NOTHING,
FAVOURED KARNATAKA, CLAIMS UDDHAV
First India Bureau
Mumbai: Shiv Sena
president Uddhav
Thackeray on Thurs-
day said that nothing
came out of Union
Home Minister Amit
Shah’s meeting
with the CMs
of Maharash-
tra and Kar-
nataka over
the border dis-
pute.
Speaking at a
p r e s s
c o n -
fer-
ence after a meeting
with his Maha Vikas
Aghadi allies Congress
and NCP, he also said it
was difficult to believe
that some tweets from
the verified handle of
Karnataka Chief Min-
ister Basa-
v a r a j
Bommai
on the is-
sue were not ac-
tually posted by
him.
“What was
achieved
by yes-
t e r -
day’s meeting? It was
rubbing of salt into our
wounds. As always, the
deliberations favoured
Karnataka,” Thackeray
said.
The former chief
minister demanded to
know why Kar-
nataka holds
legislature ses-
sions in Bela-
gavi (the north Karna-
taka city which is the
main bone of conten-
tion between the two
states) and accorded it
the status of second
capital when the border
dispute was before the
Supreme Court.
‘’Belagavi, Karwar,
Nipani and other sur-
rounding areas (of
northern Karnataka)
want to join Maharash-
tra. Why are there no
answers to this de-
mand,” he asked.
He also sought to
know why Karnataka
chief minister waited
till Wednesday’s meet-
ing in Delhi to clarify
that some `fake’ Twitter
handles were posting
tweets in his name that
fuelled tensions.

RESPITE ON CARDS FOR KIRIT, SON AS EOW
LOOKS TO CLOSE VIRAT DONATION CASE
Sandeep Shukla
Mumbai: BJP leader
Kirit Somaiya has got
relief in the case relat-
ed to the donation scam
filed against him and
his son, Neil. The Bom-
bay High Court has
stayed his arrest for the
time being.
The EOW is prepar-
ing to give a major re-
lief in the alleged 57
crore fraud
case on BJP
leader and for-
mer MP Kirit
Somaiya. It is
reported that
the EOW is go-
ing to present
its report in
this matter, in which
Kirit Somaiya is going
to be cleared of all
charges and
the investiga-
tion file would
be closed.
N o t a b l y,
there is an al-
legation that
he raised
funds to save
INS Vikrant, but then
misused that fund. This
case has been regis-
tered on the complaint
of a 53-year-old ex-ser-
viceman.Thecomplain-
ant alleged that he gave
donations to Somaiya to
save the ship and the
former govt initiated
probe against Kirit and
his son for misusing
funds.
Mumbai: On Tuesday, the Mumbai police arrested one Narayan
Soni from Patna for issuing death threats to NCP President
Sharad Pawar. However, one day after the arrest, Mumbai police
spilled the beans as to why did the man issue death threats.
“Narayan Kumar Soni has been arrested from Bihar. He
called NCP president Sharad Pawar’s residence in Silver Oak
area yesterday (Tuesday) and threatened to kill him. He will be
produced in court. The accused is mentally unstable. He lived
in Pune for ten years, during which his wife
left him and married another man. After
this he approached Sharad Pawar and
requested him to mediate in the matter,”
officials said. According to the cops,
the accused confessed, “Sharad
Pawar did not make any effort to solve
his conundrum.” On this, Narayan
Soni got angry and started issuing
threats.
Mumbai: Former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh
on Wednesday withdrew a defamation suit filed against TV
journalist Arnab Goswami and ARG Outlier Media which owns
Republic TV. Additional sessions judge V D Kedar allowed the
withdrawal but imposed a nominal cost of Rs 1,500 on Singh
which will be paid to Goswami. “It is not
in dispute that due to filing of the suit the
defendant has to engage an advocate.
I feel cost needs to be imposed for
withdrawal of the suit unconditionally,”
the judge said. Singh had filed a
defamation suit in 2021 against
Goswami and the owners of
Republic TV seeking damages
of Rs 90,00,000 for
allegedly defaming him.
MAHARASHTRA - KARNATAKA BORDER ROW
Shahi 'firman' subdues 'land wars' in neighbouring states!
Kartikey Dev Singh
New Delhi: With the
crescendo around the
border row between Ma-
harashtra and Karna-
taka rising to a new
high, Union Home Min-
ister Amit Shah, on
Wednesday evening,
‘brokered’ peace be-
tween the two neigh-
bouring states as he
chaired a meeting with
Chief Minister of Ma-
harashtra and Karna-
taka - Eknath Shinde
and Basavaraj Bommai
respectively - in New
Delhi. During the meet-
ing, Maharashtra depu-
ty CM Devendra Fad-
navis and Karnataka
Home Minister Araga
Jnanendra were also
present.
Shah has strictly told
the leaders that no state
will make claim to an-
other’s territory untill
the time the Supreme
Court makes a decision
on the issue. Notably,
Shah has also dictated
to the leaders that “Both
states have agreed to
form a committee head-
ed by one senior IPS of-
ficer regarding this mat-
ter so that constitution-
al norms are followed
and law and order is
maintained in both
states so that outsiders
and locals don’t face any
problem.”
It has been learnt that
Shah clearly told the
leaders that six minis-
ters, three from each
state,willsitanddiscuss
the various issues that
are present between the
neighbouring states.
Moreover the Union
Home Minister also
commented on the role
of the opposition par-
ties in both the states
and claimed that the so-
cial media played ama-
jor role in stoking emo-
tions. “Some fake Twit-
ter (handles) mention-
ing top leaders were
spread… and this issue
is very serious… It has
been decided that wher-
ever these cases have
come out, FIR will be
registered and those
who have done it will be
exposed in front of the
public,” he said.
He also appealed to
the opposition parties
not to make the matter
into a political issue,
‘for the welfare of peo-
ple of both the state’.
Amit Shah holds meeting with Maha CM Shinde, Dy CM Fadnavis, K'taka CM Bommai and K'taka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, directs them to wait till SC makes its decision
After K'taka, dispute may escalate
BETWEEN MAHA AND TELANGANA
Mumbai: After the Maha-
rashtra-Karnataka border
row, a Maharashtra-Telan-
gana border dispute may
escalate as 14 villages of
Chandrapur district in the
western state bordering the
Telugu one, have expressed
interest to join the latter
alleging continuous neglect
and lack of development by
the former.
Although, all these 14
villages--geographically lo-
cated in remote Jivati tehsil
of Chandrapur dis-
trict -- are part of
Maharashtra; the
dependence of
these villages is
more on Telangana.
These 14 hamlets
have lagged behind
in development due
to the government’s
negligence and lack
of developmental
projects. The villages have
to struggle for basic facili-
ties like roads and water;
because of this, the local
people resent the Maha-
rashtra government.
The Telangana govern-
ment is providing facili-
ties like Gram Panchayat
building, school, water
tanks and other basic facili-
ties. The administration of
Telangana is constantly
reaching out to these peo-
ple, and villagers are taking
advantage of the social
welfare scheme of the
Telangana government.
All these 14 villages
figure in the voter’s list
of both the states and the
people there enjoy dual
identity, entitling them
to take benefits of all the
basic facilities including
political status from both
Telangana and Maharash-
tra.
NOW LAWYER RAISES DEMAND FOR
MARATHWADA
Mumbai: Advocate Gunaratna Sadavarte, who is famous
for making various statements, has raked up the demand
for an independent Marathwada. He has also criticized MPs
Udayanraje Bhosale and Sanjay Raut. “Sanjay Raut opposes
independent Vidarbha and independent Marathwada. What
is Sanjay Raut doing in a drunken state while Home Minister
Amit Shah is holding a meeting on the border issue? How
much land does Udayanraj own? How much property tax
does he pay? I will unearth all this at the right time,” he said.

RS was adjourned twice for 15 minutes on Thursday

chief Raj Thackeray on
Thursday said elections

Thane, must be held im-

First India Bureau
Nagpur: Bharatiya
Kisan Sangh (BKS), an
affiliate of the Rashtri-
ya Swayamsevak Sangh
(RSS) on Thursday said
it will hold a national
level ‘Kisan Garjana’
protest march in Delhi
on December 19. The
farmers’ organization
will seek various relief
measures for cultiva-
tors to improve their
condition.
BKS’s executive com-
mittee member Nana
Aakhre said in a release
that farmers, who pro-
vide food grains, vege-
tables, fruits, milk, etc,
are “very disappointed”
today due to lack of re-
turns to their farm pro-
duce, and are commit-
ting suicide due to it.
“In order to address
the woes of the farmers,
the BKS demands prof-
itable prices on all farm
produce. Also, Goods
and Services Tax (GST)
should not be levied on
the farm produce and
the financial relief pro-
vided under the Kisan
Samman Nidhi should
be increased,” it said.
Aakhre said that
lakhs of farm workers
from across the country
will participate in the
‘Kisan Garajna’ rally in
the national capital on
Monday
.

‘Findmastermindbehind‘fake’tweets’
NCP leader also urged govt to engage services of advocate Harish Salve in border row case
Mumbai (PTI): Na-
tionalist Congress Par-
ty (NCP) leader Ajit Pa-
war on Thursday de-
manded that the Union
government find out
the “mastermind” be-
hind the ‘fake’ Twitter
accounts which alleg-
edly fuelled tensions
over the boundary dis-
pute between Maha-
rashtra and Karnataka.
He was responding to
Maharashtra Chief
Minister Eknath Shin-
de’s claim that tweets in
the name of Karnataka
Chief Minister claim-
ing some areas of Ma-
harashtra were not ac-
tually posted by Basa-
varaj Bommai.
On Wednesday
, Union
Home Minister Amit
Shah, who met the chief
ministers of both the
states, had said that
fake tweets in the name
of top leaders also esca-
lated the issue.
Talking to reporters
in Mumbai, Pawar, who
is the Leader of Opposi-
tion in Maharashtra As-
sembly, said the border
dispute is before the
Supreme Court, and if
Karnataka CM Bommai
had not made unwar-
ranted comments, ten-
sions would not have
risen.
“This led to residents
of border villages in
Maharashtra talking
about joining Karnata-
ka due to lack of devel-
opment,” he said.
“The mastermind be-
hind the fake Twitter
accounts, whose tweets
hurt the sentiments and
sparked protests,
should be found out,”
Pawar added.
The NCP leader also
demanded that senior
lawyer Harish Salve be
engaged to represent
Maharashtra in the
casebeforetheSupreme
Court.
On Wednesday, UHM
Shah had asked chief
ministers of the two
states to set up a six-
member joint ministe-
rial panel to deal with
the dispute and not
make any claims till
the SC pronounces its
verdict.
The border row be-
tween Maharashtra and
Karnataka recently
heated up with inci-
dents of violence being
reported from border
areas of both states.
The dispute dates
back to 1957 after the
reorganization of states
on linguistic lines. Ma-
harashtra laid claim to
Belagavi, which was
part of the erstwhile
Bombay Presidency, as
it has a sizeable Mar-
athi-speaking popula-
tion. It also staked
claim to 814 Marathi-
speaking villages
which are currently
part of Karnataka.

‘Shivaji batted for
Indian democracy’
First India Bureau
Satara: Bharatiya Ja-
nata Party (BJP) MP
Udayanraje Bhosale
on Thursday said peo-
ple have forgotten the
contribution of
Chhatrapati Shivaji Ma-
haraj to the democratic
India we see today
.
During a media inter-
action in Satara, Bho-
sale said, “Life has be-
come hectic and these
days thoughts of
Chhatrapati Shivaji
Maharaj are being for-
gotten. This is happen-
ing despite the fact that
it was Shivaji who had
given the idea of equal-
ity of all religions back
then (17th century).”
“Democracy came
into existence after
monarchy. Islamic
countries still have
monarchy. If Shivaji
Maharaj had decided to
keep monarchy in exist-
ence here then, India
would not be a democ-
racy,” he said.
But Shivaji Maharaj
was of the opinion that
people should partici-
pate in governance of
a nation. And so, he
introduced the concept
of democracy to the
people. Had dynastic
rule came into exist-
ence, only people from
a certain family could
have ruled in India, he
added.

Navi Mumbai: In order to create awareness among
motorists to use seatbelts while driving or co-driv-
er in the front seats of a four-wheeler, the Panvel
traffic unit of Navi Mumbai police offered flowers to
those motorists who did not wear seatbelts. “While
traveling in a four-wheeler, it is mandatory for the
driver and the passenger on the front seat to wear
seat belts. There is also a traffic rule in this regard.
Both the traffic police as well as RTO can take penal
action against drivers who do not wear seatbelts,” an
official from the traffic unit said. Despite the traffic
department collecting huge fines from violators,
some drivers do not follow this rule. “Seatbelt is very
helpful and beneficial from a safety point of view. If
the seat belt is not worn, airbags do not work in the
event of an accident in many vehicles. They come
out only if the belt is being used,” said the official.

Railways’ BMC water bill crosses
`500-crore mark, services still on
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Central
Railway (CR) and West-
ern Railway (WR) owe
the Brihanmumbai
Municipal Corpora-
tion (BMC) over Rs568
crore in the form of
unpaid water bills
spanning decades. The
information was re-
vealed in a response to
an RTI query.
As per the corpora-
tion records, as of No-
vember 01 this year, the
Central Railway has
Rs2,59,93,79,418 dues
while the Western Rail-
way has Rs3,08,85,65,247
unpaid bills.
The railway officials,
however, said that they
are making regular pay-
ments and that old ar-
rears have snowballed
into the huge amount.
There is a BMC rule
that allows the civic
body to disconnect wa-
ter connections if the
bill amount is not paid
within the due date.
However, the list shows
that some bills are
pending since 2002.
This raises the ques-
tion as to why BMC did
not disconnect supply
and take legal action
to recover the out-
standing amount.
Civic officials said
they had disconnected
and restored supply to a
number of railway
units, and added that
it was a continuous on-
going process.

Condonation of delay
in filing appeal: Pillai
opposes Paes's plea
Mumbai (PTI) : Tennis
player Leander Paes’s
former live-in partner
Rhea Pillai on Thurs-
day opposed his plea for
“condonation of delay”
in filing an appeal
against a magistrate’s
court’s order in the do-
mestic violence case. In
February this year, the
Bandra metropolitan
magistrate’s court held
that Paes, an Olympics
bronze medal winner,
had committed various
acts of domestic vio-
lence against Pillai.
It also directed him to
pay monthly mainte-
nance amount of Rs1
lakh to Pillai, the moth-
er of his daughter,
along with monthly
rent of Rs50,000 on the
condition that she left
his flat on Carter Road.
The former tennis
player moved the ses-
sions court in Novem-
ber seeking quashing
of the magistrate’s or-
der. He also prayed for
condonation of delay in
filing appeal as the mag-
istrate’s court had
passed the order on Feb-
ruary 11, 2022. In her
reply filed through ad-
vocate Sana Usman, Pil-
lai said the condonation
of delay plea was “de-
void of any substantial
and genuine grounds”.
The statutory period for
filing appeal is 30 days
under section 29 of the
Protection of Women
from Domestic Violence
Act, 2005, the reply said.
Paes had been travel-
ling with his current
girlfriend Kim Sharma
to various holiday des-
tinations and social
events during the seven
months when he failed
to move the court, it al-
leged. It also claimed
that Paes’s claim that
he was busy taking care
of his father was false.
The sessions court will
hear the matter further
on January 12, 2023.

While the kitchen is

members of families of
two brothers Uttam Pa-

have been living in this
10-room house for years.
In 1969, when the dis-

was finally fixed, the Pa-

house was also divided.
However, no problem has
been faced to date by the

Speaking on the mat-

“Our house is divided

today we have not had
any problem with it, we
pay property tax in both
the states and take ad-

Both states have laid
their claims on 14 vil-

dent Nana Patole on
Thursday criticized the
Central government for
the increase in number
of drug addicts among
youths across the coun-

. He also blamed it for
higher frequency of
drug smuggling.
Talking to media, Pa-
tole said, “India is seen
as a ‘young’ nation,
with around 50% of the
population falling in
the age group of 16 to 40
years. This generation,
which is considered the
future of country, is be-
coming drug addicts.”
An affidavit submit-
ted by the Central gov-
ernment to the Su-
preme Court states that
1.5 crore children in the
age group of 10 to 17
years are addicted to
drugs. This clearly
shows how serious the
situation is and it has
worsened due to mas-
sive increase in smug-
gling since the Bharati-

ment came to power in
the Centre, he asserted.
Talking about drug
smuggling crackdowns,
the Congress leader
said, “The younger gen-

. Drug trafficking has
increased significantly
in the last few years.”

REVIEWING DELHI
AIRPORT INFRA
TO END WOES OF
PASSENGERS
he frustration of be-
ing confined to their
homes because of
the travel restric-
tions due to the pan-
demic is being let out now with
people rushing to catch the first
flight to execute their travel
plans. Lack of infrastructure is
another reason for the over-
crowding. So heavy is the foot-
fall that Delhi international air-
port’s Terminal 3 has been wit-
nessing chaotic scenes for the
last few day. The seemingly un-
ending breakdown of arrange-
ments at the airport forced the
Civil Aviation Minister Jyotira-
ditya Scindia to personally visit
the airport to find out what the
bottlenecks were. Other major
airports also are witnessing
scenes which some flyers com-
pared with a ‘fish market’.
After the minister’s visit a
slew of measures were an-
nounced. It was found that more
counters of different airlines
were needed and the process of
security check at the entry point
and baggage clearance needed
to be expedited in view of long
queues of travellers. The plans
have not worked so far.
T
ow quickly eco-
nomic interests
take over national
sentiments is best
illustrated by In-
dia’s relations with China. In
a burst of justifiable anger
after the violent clashes in
Galwan in 2020, there were
callstoboycottChinesegoods.
The boycott call, strongly
backed by the Confederation
of All-India Traders (CAIT),
especially targeted decorative
lights, idols of Lord Ganesh
and goddess Lakshmi and
firecrackers which register
brisk sale during Diwali. The
CAIT expected a business loss
of about 75, 000 crore to Chi-
na. The response was signifi-
cant as Chinese goods disap-
peared during that year’s fes-
tive season.
The patriotic fervour of
2020 didn’t last long. Chinese
fancy lights were back to
swarm Indian markets. De-
spite the after-effects of pan-
demic and inflation, demand
was at its peak. China is un-
derstood to have exported
$710 million worth of LED
light related products, about
135% more than the corre-
sponding period in 2020.
Stronger national sentiments
are needed for decoupling
with China by replacing Chi-
nese products with those
made in India. Cost is one
factor which makes Indian
products uncompetitive in
comparison to those from
China. Besides import of
fancy lights, China remains
India’s 2nd biggest trading
partner after US. While India
exported $21.25 billion worth
of goods to China in 2021-22,
imports stood at $94.57 bil-
lion. These figures may wrongly
be interpreted to suggest that
China’sdesignsonIndia’sterrito-
rial integrity are being ignored.
With Indian economy now on a
brisk march, it will take some
time to reduce the country’s de-
pendence on Chinese products.
THE DISSIPATION
OF GALWAN ANGER
Stronger national
sentiments are needed for
the decoupling with China
by replacing Chinese
products with those made

factor which makes Indian

H
MISSION POK
(Bangladesh Victory Season 2.0)
ndia celebrates VIJAY DI-
WAS on 16 Dec to commemo-
rate 51 years of Victory in
Bangladesh. Last month,
Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Ra-
jnath Singh was on a day’s
visit to the India-China bor-
der in Eastern Ladakh. This
was his second visit during a
span of a few weeks. He made
a specific mention of the part
of the State of Jammu and
Kashmir under Pakistan’s il-
legal occupation and said
that India will take back POK
in accordance with a resolu-
tion passed unanimously in
Parliament in 1994. Is India
preparing for Bangladesh
War Season 2? Let’s have a
reality check.
POLITICAL WILL
India had gone to UN in 1948
with the Kashmir issue and
thereafter in various forums,
India has always reiterated
that sanctity of ‘Line of Con-
trol (LC)’ should be main-
tained. Pakistan leaves no
opportunity to keep the
Kashmir issue alive in inter-
national forum. LC is now
accepted as ipso facto border
between India and Pakistan.
Even during Kargil war the
sanctity of LC was honoured
by India. India had 4 golden
chances that Pakistan pre-
sented in the form of four
wars they lost, but we didn’t
do it that time. However, the
Hon’ble Raksha Mantri’s
statement on POK manifests
the changed political will of
New Bharat.
India is progressing well
as the fastest growing econo-
my in the world and today we
are a power to reckon. Any
misadventure will derail the
economic progress and take
the country back by more
than a decade or so. War is a
costly hobby and the price of
war in terms of economy and
human lives will have to be
clearly weighed by the deci-
sion makers, before we un-
dertake such bold action.
MILITARY CAPABILITY
India Armed Forces are
among the world’s largest de-
fence forces with experience
of four wars. However, to un-
dertake an offensive of the
magnitude of taking POK
back will need a detailed
thought. The following as-
pects merit consideration-
l India and Pakistan have
formidable defence system
along the ‘Line of Control
(LC)’ in JK. The pace of
operations will therefore
be slow in such obstacle
ridden rugged terrain.
l Any initiative of India in
the context could result in
a two front war with Chi-
na and Pakistan.
l China has heavily invested
in POK and won’t let it slip
out. It will provide all
help to Pakistan thereby
keeping India embroiled
in the conflict without any
tangible gains.
l Even if China doesn’t open
up the Eastern Borders of
India actively take part
with Pakistan, China will
certainly deploy it’s forces
on LAC with India and tie
down a large amount of
Indian forces, in the East-
ern theatre of war.
l India has three strike
corps, as offensive forces.
One is poised for China
Sector, the second for de-
serts of Western Sector
and only one strike corps
is left for offensive in Jk.
Therefore, taking entire
POK with one strike corps
may not be feasible and
committing more troops
in POK will unbalance the
entire western front.
l Support of local popula-
tion is essential for such
operations but it’s not
likely in the case in POK.
INTERNATIONAL
OPINION
India’s stand of principled
neutrality during Russia’s
aggression in Ukraine has
also not been taken kindly by
the west and the USA. The so-
called free world has framed
a negative impression of In-
dia. India has also made it
clear in the Ukraine conflict
that it does not favour war as
a means to resolve interna-
tional disputes. PM Modi is
on record to say-“This is not
an Era of war.”
China being member of
UNSC will take the lead to
declare India as an aggressor.
Large no of economic and
diplomatic sanctions will be
slapped on India. Presently,
India is a fragile economy
with large portion of war
equipment and oil being ex-
ported. After Ukraine war
and prolonged sanctions,
Russia will be too weak to
support India and veto such
resolutions, against the wish-
es of China. Therefore, India
will be throttled to stop war,
by the West and China.
CHAOS IN PAKISTAN
Pakistan is in utter chaos to-
day due to economic crisis
and political turmoil. Nature
has also not been kind and
ravaging floods have also add-
ed to its woos. Hardliners and
extremist organizations are
calling the shots over weak-
ened Govt and non assertive
Pak Army
. Pakistan society
today is almost on the brink
of a civil war. Further rise in
tempers will lead to more
violence and civil unrest.
The POK region has also
been linguistically and cul-
turally marginalized by Paki-
stan rulers, for nearly 75
years. People of POK are be-
ing deprived of all basic
rights by Pakistan and it
remains an underdeveloped
territory. China is making
inroads into this territory to
fulfill its ambitions. POK is
presently at the crossroads
of Conflicting Interests of
India, China and Pakistan.
CONCLUSION
Crystal gazing into future in-
dicates that there is consider-
able anti-China feeling
spreading in Pakistan. USA
is already alienated with
Pak. India is making new
friends in the Arab world and
Pakistan has been snubbed
many a times. It is possible
that Pakistan may be isolated
from its closest allies - USA,
China and the Arab world. In
the time-frame that this
change comes about, India
would be militarily powerful
to take back POK by force,
economically strong to with-
stand sanctions that will ac-
crue and politically strong to
justify the actions in the in-
ternational forum. Once that
is done, taking POK will be
a cakewalk. It’s a ‘feel good’
factor whose time has not yet
come but we can keep the pot
boiling.

Will Rahul Gandhi take command
in South and Priyanka in North?
Shamsher Singh
New Delhi: Rahul Gan-
dhi started his Bharat
Jodo Yatra from South
India. It was not a spon-
taneous decision, but it
was done after a lot of
thought. Priyanka Gan-
dhi Vadra also did not
participate in the yatra
anywhere in South In-
dia, but as soon as the
yatra left the south, she
joined the yatra in Mad-
hya Pradesh with her
husband and son, and
traveled with her hus-
band and daughter in
Rajasthan. In future
too, the states where
Congress will go on
Bharat Jodo Yatra, she
can join there. She cam-
paigned fiercely in the
hill state of Himachal
Pradesh and Uttar
Pradesh and also got
the party to victory in
the Himachal elections.
So, it looks like the Con-
gress is going to divide
the responsibility be-
tween Rahul Gandhi
and Priyanka Gandhi
Vadra in the next Lok
Sabha elections.
Rahul Gandhi will
contest the Lok Sabha
elections from the Way-
anad seat in Kerala and
will lead the party in
South India, while Pri-
yanka Gandhi Vadra
will contest from the
Rae Bareli seat and will
lead the party in North
India. However, this
does not mean that Ra-
hul will not campaign
in the states of North
India. He has emerged
as the supreme leader
of the party from the
Bharat Jodo Yatra and
the party will make full
use of his new image in
the campaign.

100 DAYS OF BHARAT JODO YATRA
Rahul Gandhi, leaders walk
on road to Congress revival
Jaipur (PTI): As the
‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ en-
ters its 100th day Friday
,
Congress watchers feel
it has found some an-
swers the party had
been looking for on the
road to 2024 but ques-
tions remain whether it
will yield electoral divi-
dends going forward.
The Kanyakumari to
Kashmir foot march
has also courted many
controversies in the last
three months and led to
several fiery exchanges
between the Congress
and the BJP including
on Rahul Gandhi’s ever-
growing grey beard and
his Burberry T-shirt.
With over 2,800 km
under his belt, Gandhi
has managed to catch
the attention of his sup-
porters as well as de-
tractors and seen quite
a few celebrities includ-
ing from the tinsel town
and academia walking
alongside him from
time to time.However,
some political pundits
feel the party should
have had more tangible
political objectives for
the yatra and ques-
tioned the party for
skipping poll-bound
states of Gujarat and
Himachal Pradesh.
Amid questions over
the yatra translating
into any electoral divi-
dend, two recently- con-
cluded assembly elec-
tions turned out to be a
mixed bag for the Con-
gress as it was drubbed
in Gujarat to its lowest-
ever tally while won in
Himachal.
A clearer picture of
the impact on the par-
ty’s electoral fortunes
would emerge in the as-
sembly polls next year,
including in Karnata-
ka, Madhya Pradesh
and Rajasthan, which
were covered well by
the Yatra.

‘JO PIYEGA WOH MAREGA’, SAYS
NITISH AFTER HOOCH TOLL RISES
Patna: After Bihar’s hooch toll climbed, Chief Minister
Nitish Kumar on Thursday warned that if people drink
spurious liquor, they may well die, as the prohibition
policy of his government
came under attack from
various quarters. Political
strategist turned activist
Prashant Kishor described
the state's prohibition law
as a farce and demanded
scrapping of the prohibi-
tion law. Jo piyega woh marega (those who drink
spurious alcohol will die), thundered Bihar Chief
Minister Nitish Kumar who stood his ground maintain-
ing that prohibition was “not my personal wish but a
response to the cries of the women of the state”.
BJP’S BIHAR ALLY DEMANDS ENDING
PROHIBITION, SLAMS NITISH KUMAR
New Delhi: BJP ally Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party, headed
by Union Minister Pashupati Kumar Paras, on Thursday
demanded ending prohibition in Bihar, claiming that the
policy has been a failure with a
large number of people dying
due to supply of spurious
liquor. The party alleged that
over 40 people have died in
the hooch tragedy in Saran
and said a delegation of its
MPs led by Paras will meet Bi-
har Governor Phagu Chauhan over the incidents of deaths
in the state due to consumption of spurious liquor and also
the “deteriorating” law-and-order situation. Rashtriya Lok
Janshakti Party spokesperson Shravan Kumar Agrawal
said party members, including its four MPs from the state,
will organise a protest in Patna on December 17 over the
tragedy in Saran. “Prohibition should be ended,” he said.

BJP-RULED STATES HAVE ACCOUNTED FOR
MOST HOOCH DEATHS: TEJASHWI YADAV
Patna: Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday launched a
counterattack on the BJP, claiming that states ruled by the saffron
party had the worst track records in terms of spurious liquor deaths.
The RJD leader gave a statement before the media, outside the Assem-
bly which is in session, claiming that Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka
stood at the top in terms of the number of hooch deaths while even
Gujarat, a dry state, fared much worse than Bihar which is under the
spotlight over the Saran hooch tragedy that has killed over 20 people.
“I am reading out from a statement given on the floor of Parlia-
ment by Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, who
incidentally hails from Bihar, on July 19... BJP leaders here

in the next decade and the country’s carriers should have more wide-body planes
to capture the long haul segment, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia

Elon Musk sells $3.58 bn worth of Tesla stock
First India Bureau
New Delhi: Elon Musk
sold another $3.58 billion
worth of Tesla stock this
week, but it wasn’t clear
where the proceeds were
being spent.
The Tesla CEO, and new
owner of Twitter, sold the
shares from Monday
through Wednesday, ac-
cording to a filing posted
Wednesday night by the US
Securities and Exchange
Commission.
Musk has sold nearly $23
billion worth of Tesla stock
since April, with much of
the money likely going to
help fund his $44 billion ac-
quisition of Twitter.
The sale comes as shares
of the electric vehicle and
solar panel maker have col-
lapsed, losing over half
their value since Musk
first disclosed in April that
he was buying up Twitter
stock. The falling shares
have bumped Musk from
his status as the world’s
wealthiest person, with his
net worth falling to $174 bil-
lion, according to Forbes.
He was passed last week
by Bernard Arnault.
The takeover of Twitter
has not been smooth, and
some big companies have
halted advertising on the
social media platform.
Musk has said that Twit-

  • 1. Mumbai Police’s EOW closes INS Vikrant fund case against Kirit Somaiya, his son Mumbai: As reported by First India in its edi- tion dated December 14; on Thursday, the Mumbai Police’s Eco- nomic Offences Wing (EOW) has closed a case of cheating and crimi- nal breach of trust reg- istered against BJP leader Kirit Somaiya and his son Neil for al- leged diver- sion of funds col- lected un- der their ‘Save INS Vi k r a n t ’ campaign, an official said on Thursday . The EOW officials, who probed the case, submitted a closure re- port before a local court on Wednesday, he said. “In the investigation, the police did not find any criminality in the case against Somaiya and his son, following which the C-Summary (closure) report was filed,” he said. MEETING IN DELHI ACHIEVED NOTHING, FAVOURED KARNATAKA, CLAIMS UDDHAV First India Bureau Mumbai: Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Thurs- day said that nothing came out of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s meeting with the CMs of Maharash- tra and Kar- nataka over the border dis- pute. Speaking at a p r e s s c o n - fer- ence after a meeting with his Maha Vikas Aghadi allies Congress and NCP, he also said it was difficult to believe that some tweets from the verified handle of Karnataka Chief Min- ister Basa- v a r a j Bommai on the is- sue were not ac- tually posted by him. “What was achieved by yes- t e r - day’s meeting? It was rubbing of salt into our wounds. As always, the deliberations favoured Karnataka,” Thackeray said. The former chief minister demanded to know why Kar- nataka holds legislature ses- sions in Bela- gavi (the north Karna- taka city which is the main bone of conten- tion between the two states) and accorded it the status of second capital when the border dispute was before the Supreme Court. ‘’Belagavi, Karwar, Nipani and other sur- rounding areas (of northern Karnataka) want to join Maharash- tra. Why are there no answers to this de- mand,” he asked. He also sought to know why Karnataka chief minister waited till Wednesday’s meet- ing in Delhi to clarify that some `fake’ Twitter handles were posting tweets in his name that fuelled tensions. BORDER ROW RESPITE ON CARDS FOR KIRIT, SON AS EOW LOOKS TO CLOSE VIRAT DONATION CASE Sandeep Shukla Mumbai: BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has got relief in the case relat- ed to the donation scam filed against him and his son, Neil. The Bom- bay High Court has stayed his arrest for the time being. The EOW is prepar- ing to give a major re- lief in the alleged 57 crore fraud case on BJP leader and for- mer MP Kirit Somaiya. It is reported that the EOW is go- ing to present its report in this matter, in which Kirit Somaiya is going to be cleared of all charges and the investiga- tion file would be closed. N o t a b l y, there is an al- legation that he raised funds to save INS Vikrant, but then misused that fund. This case has been regis- tered on the complaint of a 53-year-old ex-ser- viceman.Thecomplain- ant alleged that he gave donations to Somaiya to save the ship and the former govt initiated probe against Kirit and his son for misusing funds. Mumbai: On Tuesday, the Mumbai police arrested one Narayan Soni from Patna for issuing death threats to NCP President Sharad Pawar. However, one day after the arrest, Mumbai police spilled the beans as to why did the man issue death threats. “Narayan Kumar Soni has been arrested from Bihar. He called NCP president Sharad Pawar’s residence in Silver Oak area yesterday (Tuesday) and threatened to kill him. He will be produced in court. The accused is mentally unstable. He lived in Pune for ten years, during which his wife left him and married another man. After this he approached Sharad Pawar and requested him to mediate in the matter,” officials said. According to the cops, the accused confessed, “Sharad Pawar did not make any effort to solve his conundrum.” On this, Narayan Soni got angry and started issuing threats. Mumbai: Former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh on Wednesday withdrew a defamation suit filed against TV journalist Arnab Goswami and ARG Outlier Media which owns Republic TV. Additional sessions judge V D Kedar allowed the withdrawal but imposed a nominal cost of Rs 1,500 on Singh which will be paid to Goswami. “It is not in dispute that due to filing of the suit the defendant has to engage an advocate. I feel cost needs to be imposed for withdrawal of the suit unconditionally,” the judge said. MAHARASHTRA - KARNATAKA BORDER ROW Shahi 'firman' subdues 'land wars' in neighbouring states! Kartikey Dev Singh New Delhi: With the crescendo around the border row between Ma- harashtra and Karna- taka rising to a new high, Union Home Min- ister Amit Shah, on Wednesday evening, ‘brokered’ peace be- tween the two neigh- bouring states as he chaired a meeting with Chief Minister of Ma- harashtra and Karna- taka - Eknath Shinde and Basavaraj Bommai respectively - in New Delhi. During the meet- ing, Maharashtra depu- ty CM Devendra Fad- navis and Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra were also present. Shah has strictly told the leaders that no state will make claim to an- other’s territory untill the time the Supreme Court makes a decision on the issue. Notably, Shah has also dictated to the leaders that “Both states have agreed to form a committee head- ed by one senior IPS of- ficer regarding this mat- ter so that constitution- al norms are followed and law and order is maintained in both states so that outsiders and locals don’t face any problem.” It has been learnt that Shah clearly told the leaders that six minis- ters, three from each state, willsitanddiscuss the various issues that are present between the neighbouring states. Moreover the Union Home Minister also commented on the role of the opposition par- ties in both the states and claimed that the so- cial media played ama- jor role in stoking emo- tions. “Some fake Twit- ter (handles) mention- ing top leaders were spread… and this issue is very serious… It has been decided that wher- ever these cases have come out, FIR will be registered and those who have done it will be exposed in front of the public,” he said. He also appealed to the opposition parties not to make the matter into a political issue, ‘for the welfare of peo- ple of both the state’. Amit Shah holds meeting with Maha CM Shinde, Dy CM Fadnavis, K'taka CM Bommai and K'taka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, directs them to wait till SC makes its decision After K'taka, dispute may escalate BETWEEN MAHA AND TELANGANA Mumbai: After the Maha- rashtra-Karnataka border row, a Maharashtra-Telan- gana border dispute may escalate as 14 villages of Chandrapur district in the western state bordering the Telugu one, have expressed interest to join the latter alleging continuous neglect and lack of development by the former. Although, all these 14 villages--geographically lo- cated in remote Jivati tehsil of Chandrapur dis- trict -- are part of Maharashtra; the dependence of these villages is more on Telangana. These 14 hamlets have lagged behind in development due to the government’s negligence and lack of developmental projects. The villages have to struggle for basic facili- ties like roads and water; because of this, the local people resent the Maha- rashtra government. The Telangana govern- ment is providing facili- ties like Gram Panchayat building, school, water tanks and other basic facili- ties. The administration of Telangana is constantly reaching out to these peo- ple, and villagers are taking advantage of the social welfare scheme of the Telangana government. All these 14 villages figure in the voter’s list of both the states and the people there enjoy dual identity, entitling them to take benefits of all the basic facilities including political status from both Telangana and Maharash- tra. NOW LAWYER RAISES DEMAND FOR MARATHWADA Mumbai: Advocate Gunaratna Sadavarte, who is famous for making various statements, has raked up the demand for an independent Marathwada. He has also criticized MPs Udayanraje Bhosale and Sanjay Raut. “Sanjay Raut opposes independent Vidarbha and independent Marathwada. What is Sanjay Raut doing in a drunken state while Home Minister Amit Shah is holding a meeting on the border issue? How much land does Udayanraj own? How much property tax does he pay? I will unearth all this at the right time,” he said. Municipal Commissioner and administrator Iqbal Singh Chahal on December 12 passed a resolution to change the name of the 160-year-old zoo to ‘Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Vanaspati Udyan va Pranisangra- halaya’. The word ‘vanaspati’, which means botanical, has been inserted before ‘udyan’ or garden in the earlier name. The garden, which is spread over 5,200 sq m, houses more than 6,611 trees of over 291 species that comprises 80% of the city’s flora. CRUCIAL READ 1.3K VEHICLES ‘CHALLANED’ onMumbai-PuneE-way,oldhighway First India Bureau Mumbai: The flying squads of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) have issued challans or traffic violation notices to nearly 1,300 vehicles for various offences, in- cluding over-speeding and lane cutting, on the Mumbai-Pune Express- way this month so far. The squads issued challans to 268 others for over-speeding, 448 vehiclesforlanecutting, 218 vehicles for wrong- side driving and 365 oth- ers for driving without wearing seat belts, said a release issued by the Maharashtra Motor Ve- hicles Department. The action was taken as part of a special on- going drive “Suraksha”. The department launched this initiative from December 01 on- wards on both the high- ways--the Mumbai- Pune Expressway and the old highway con- necting the two cities- -with an aim to curb the rising road accidents and inculcate discipline among drivers. Deputy Transport Commissioner (Road Safety Cell) Bharat Kalaskar said, “The penalty for without seat belt driv- ing is Rs500, for w r o n g - s i d e parking is Rs500. The charge for lane cutting is Rs1,000 and the same for over-speeding is Rs2,000 in case of cars and Rs1,000 in case of two-wheel- ers.” The flying squads also is- sued challans for 57 cases of lane c u t t i n g , 162 cas- e s of driving without seat belt, 95 cases of over- speeding and 47 cases of wrong-side parking on the old Mumbai- Pune highway (NH-48). Navi Mumbai: In order to create awareness among motorists to use seatbelts while driving or co-driv- er in the front seats of a four-wheeler, the Panvel traffic unit of Navi Mumbai police offered flowers to those motorists who did not wear seatbelts. “While traveling in a four-wheeler, it is mandatory for the driver and the passenger on the front seat to wear seat belts. There is also a traffic rule in this regard. Both the traffic police as well as RTO can take penal action against drivers who do not wear seatbelts,” an official from the traffic unit said. Despite the traffic department collecting huge fines from violators, some drivers do not follow this rule. “Seatbelt is very helpful and beneficial from a safety point of view. If the seat belt is not worn, airbags do not work in the event of an accident in many vehicles. They come out only if the belt is being used,” said the official. PANVEL TRAFFIC UNIT OFFERS FLOWERS TO SEATBELT RULE VIOLATORS CRACKDOWN MODE The penalty for without seat belt driving is Rs500, for wrong-side parking is Rs500. The information was re- vealed in a response to an RTI query. As per the corpora- tion records, as of No- vember 01 this year, the Central Railway has Rs2,59,93,79,418 dues while the Western Rail- way has Rs3,08,85,65,247 unpaid bills. The railway officials, however, said that they are making regular pay- ments and that old ar- rears have snowballed into the huge amount. There is a BMC rule that allows the civic body to disconnect wa- ter connections if the bill amount is not paid within the due date. However, the list shows that some bills are pending since 2002. This raises the ques- tion as to why BMC did not disconnect supply and take legal action to recover the out- standing amount. Civic officials said they had disconnected and restored supply to a number of railway units, and added that it was a continuous on- going process. RTI response reveals that CR and WR have pending water bills spanning decades Condonation of delay in filing appeal: Pillai opposes Paes's plea Mumbai (PTI) : Tennis player Leander Paes’s former live-in partner Rhea Pillai on Thurs- day opposed his plea for “condonation of delay” in filing an appeal against a magistrate’s court’s order in the do- mestic violence case. In February this year, the Bandra metropolitan magistrate’s court held that Paes, an Olympics bronze medal winner, had committed various acts of domestic vio- lence against Pillai. It also directed him to pay monthly mainte- nance amount of Rs1 lakh to Pillai, the moth- er of his daughter, along with monthly rent of Rs50,000 on the condition that she left his flat on Carter Road. The former tennis player moved the ses- sions court in Novem- ber seeking quashing of the magistrate’s or- der. He also prayed for condonation of delay in filing appeal as the mag- istrate’s court had passed the order on Feb- ruary 11, 2022. In her reply filed through ad- vocate Sana Usman, Pil- lai said the condonation of delay plea was “de- void of any substantial and genuine grounds”. The statutory period for filing appeal is 30 days under section 29 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, the reply said. Paes had been travel- ling with his current girlfriend Kim Sharma to various holiday des- tinations and social events during the seven months when he failed to move the court, it al- leged. It also claimed that Paes’s claim that he was busy taking care of his father was false. The sessions court will hear the matter further on January 12, 2023. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASE VEIL OF SHAME? While the kitchen is in Telangana, the bed- room and hall are in Ma- harashtra. A total of 13 members of families of two brothers Uttam Pa- war and Chandu Pawar have been living in this 10-room house for years. In 1969, when the dis- pute on the border issue was finally fixed, the Pa- war family’s land was di- videdintotwostates. The house was also divided. However, no problem has been faced to date by the family as they pay prop- erty taxes in both states. Speaking on the mat- ter, Uttam Pawar said, “Our house is divided between Maharashtra and Telangana, but till today we have not had any problem with it, we pay property tax in both the states and take ad- vantage of the schemes of both the states.” Both states have laid their claims on 14 vil- lages along the Maha- rashtra-Telangana bor- der. Even though the Su- preme Court has ruled that the villages belong to Maharashtra, Telan- gana continues to claim the villages as its part. Among them, one of the 14 villages is Maha- rajaguda village, which is divided between the two states. First India Bureau Mumbai: Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Com- mittee (MPCC) Presi- dent Nana Patole on Thursday criticized the Central government for the increase in number of drug addicts among youths across the coun- try . He also blamed it for higher frequency of drug smuggling. Talking to media, Pa- tole said, “India is seen as a ‘young’ nation, with around 50% of the population falling in the age group of 16 to 40 years. This generation, which is considered the future of country, is be- coming drug addicts.” An affidavit submit- ted by the Central gov- ernment to the Su- preme Court states that 1.5 crore children in the age group of 10 to 17 years are addicted to drugs. This clearly shows how serious the situation is and it has worsened due to mas- sive increase in smug- gling since the Bharati- ya Janata Party govern- ment came to power in the Centre, he asserted. Talking about drug smuggling crackdowns, the Congress leader said, “The younger gen- eration getting addicted to drugs is not good for the future of our coun- try . Drug trafficking has increased significantly in the last few years.” TWO STATES The house is divided between Telangana and Maharashtra. —PHOTO BY ANI

TOP TWEETS REVIEWING DELHI AIRPORT INFRA TO END WOES OF PASSENGERS he frustration of be- ing confined to their homes because of the travel restric- tions due to the pan- demic is being let out now with people rushing to catch the first flight to execute their travel plans. Lack of infrastructure is another reason for the over- crowding. So heavy is the foot- fall that Delhi international air- port’s Terminal 3 has been wit- nessing chaotic scenes for the last few day. The seemingly un- ending breakdown of arrange- ments at the airport forced the Civil Aviation Minister Jyotira- ditya Scindia to personally visit the airport to find out what the bottlenecks were. Other major airports also are witnessing scenes which some flyers com- pared with a ‘fish market’. After the minister’s visit a slew of measures were an- nounced. It was found that more counters of different airlines were needed and the process of security check at the entry point and baggage clearance needed to be expedited in view of long queues of travellers. The plans have not worked so far. T ow quickly eco- nomic interests take over national sentiments is best illustrated by In- dia’s relations with China. In a burst of justifiable anger after the violent clashes in Galwan in 2020, there were callstoboycottChinesegoods. The boycott call, strongly backed by the Confederation of All-India Traders (CAIT), especially targeted decorative lights, idols of Lord Ganesh and goddess Lakshmi and firecrackers which register brisk sale during Diwali. The CAIT expected a business loss of about 75, 000 crore to Chi- na. The response was signifi- cant as Chinese goods disap- peared during that year’s fes- tive season. The patriotic fervour of 2020 didn’t last long. Chinese fancy lights were back to swarm Indian markets. De- spite the after-effects of pan- demic and inflation, demand was at its peak. China is un- derstood to have exported $710 million worth of LED light related products, about 135% more than the corre- sponding period in 2020. Stronger national sentiments are needed for decoupling with China by replacing Chi- nese products with those made in India. Cost is one factor which makes Indian products uncompetitive in comparison to those from China. Besides import of fancy lights, China remains India’s 2nd biggest trading partner after US. While India exported $21.25 billion worth of goods to China in 2021-22, imports stood at $94.57 bil- lion. These figures may wrongly be interpreted to suggest that China’sdesignsonIndia’sterrito- rial integrity are being ignored. With Indian economy now on a brisk march, it will take some time to reduce the country’s de- pendence on Chinese products. THE DISSIPATION OF GALWAN ANGER Stronger national sentiments are needed for the decoupling with China by replacing Chinese products with those made in India. Cost is one factor which makes Indian products uncompetitive in comparison to those from China H MISSION POK (Bangladesh Victory Season 2.0) ndia celebrates VIJAY DI- WAS on 16 Dec to commemo- rate 51 years of Victory in Bangladesh. Last month, Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Ra- jnath Singh was on a day’s visit to the India-China bor- der in Eastern Ladakh. This was his second visit during a span of a few weeks. He made a specific mention of the part of the State of Jammu and Kashmir under Pakistan’s il- legal occupation and said that India will take back POK in accordance with a resolu- tion passed unanimously in Parliament in 1994. Is India preparing for Bangladesh War Season 2? Let’s have a reality check. POLITICAL WILL India had gone to UN in 1948 with the Kashmir issue and thereafter in various forums, India has always reiterated that sanctity of ‘Line of Con- trol (LC)’ should be main- tained. Pakistan leaves no opportunity to keep the Kashmir issue alive in inter- national forum. LC is now accepted as ipso facto border between India and Pakistan. Even during Kargil war the sanctity of LC was honoured by India. India had 4 golden chances that Pakistan pre- sented in the form of four wars they lost, but we didn’t do it that time. However, the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri’s statement on POK manifests the changed political will of New Bharat. India is progressing well as the fastest growing econo- my in the world and today we are a power to reckon. Any misadventure will derail the economic progress and take the country back by more than a decade or so. War is a costly hobby and the price of war in terms of economy and human lives will have to be clearly weighed by the deci- sion makers, before we un- dertake such bold action. MILITARY CAPABILITY India Armed Forces are among the world’s largest de- fence forces with experience of four wars. However, to un- dertake an offensive of the magnitude of taking POK back will need a detailed thought. The following as- pects merit consideration- l India and Pakistan have formidable defence system along the ‘Line of Control (LC)’ in JK. The pace of operations will therefore be slow in such obstacle ridden rugged terrain. l Any initiative of India in the context could result in a two front war with Chi- na and Pakistan. l China has heavily invested in POK and won’t let it slip out. It will provide all help to Pakistan thereby keeping India embroiled in the conflict without any tangible gains. l Even if China doesn’t open up the Eastern Borders of India actively take part with Pakistan, China will certainly deploy it’s forces on LAC with India and tie down a large amount of Indian forces, in the East- ern theatre of war. l India has three strike corps, as offensive forces. One is poised for China Sector, the second for de- serts of Western Sector and only one strike corps is left for offensive in Jk. Therefore, taking entire POK with one strike corps may not be feasible and committing more troops in POK will unbalance the entire western front. l Support of local popula- tion is essential for such operations but it’s not likely in the case in POK. INTERNATIONAL OPINION India’s stand of principled neutrality during Russia’s aggression in Ukraine has also not been taken kindly by the west and the USA. The so- called free world has framed a negative impression of In- dia. India has also made it clear in the Ukraine conflict that it does not favour war as a means to resolve interna- tional disputes. PM Modi is on record to say-“This is not an Era of war.” China being member of UNSC will take the lead to declare India as an aggressor. Large no of economic and diplomatic sanctions will be slapped on India. Presently, India is a fragile economy with large portion of war equipment and oil being ex- ported. After Ukraine war and prolonged sanctions, Russia will be too weak to support India and veto such resolutions, against the wish- es of China. Therefore, India will be throttled to stop war, by the West and China. CHAOS IN PAKISTAN Pakistan is in utter chaos to- day due to economic crisis and political turmoil. Nature has also not been kind and ravaging floods have also add- ed to its woos. Hardliners and extremist organizations are calling the shots over weak- ened Govt and non assertive Pak Army . Pakistan society today is almost on the brink of a civil war. Further rise in tempers will lead to more violence and civil unrest. The POK region has also been linguistically and cul- turally marginalized by Paki- stan rulers, for nearly 75 years. People of POK are be- ing deprived of all basic rights by Pakistan and it remains an underdeveloped territory. China is making inroads into this territory to fulfill its ambitions. POK is presently at the crossroads of Conflicting Interests of India, China and Pakistan. CONCLUSION Crystal gazing into future in- dicates that there is consider- able anti-China feeling spreading in Pakistan. USA is already alienated with Pak. India is making new friends in the Arab world and Pakistan has been snubbed many a times. It is possible that Pakistan may be isolated from its closest allies - USA, China and the Arab world. In the time-frame that this change comes about, India would be militarily powerful to take back POK by force, economically strong to with- stand sanctions that will ac- crue and politically strong to justify the actions in the in- ternational forum. Once that is done, taking POK will be a cakewalk. It’s a ‘feel good’ factor whose time has not yet come but we can keep the pot boiling. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL I India is progressing well as the fastest growing economy in the world and today we are a power to reckon. Any misadventure will derail the economic progress and take the country back by more than a decade or so. Shamsher Singh New Delhi: Rahul Gan- dhi started his Bharat Jodo Yatra from South India. It was not a spon- taneous decision, but it was done after a lot of thought. Priyanka Gan- dhi Vadra also did not participate in the yatra anywhere in South In- dia, but as soon as the yatra left the south, she joined the yatra in Mad- hya Pradesh with her husband and son, and traveled with her hus- band and daughter in Rajasthan. In future too, the states where Congress will go on Bharat Jodo Yatra, she can join there. She cam- paigned fiercely in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and also got the party to victory in the Himachal elections. So, it looks like the Con- gress is going to divide the responsibility be- tween Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in the next Lok Sabha elections. Rahul Gandhi will contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Way- anad seat in Kerala and will lead the party in South India, while Pri- yanka Gandhi Vadra will contest from the Rae Bareli seat and will lead the party in North India. However, this does not mean that Ra- hul will not campaign in the states of North India. The Kanyakumari to Kashmir foot march has also courted many controversies in the last three months and led to several fiery exchanges between the Congress and the BJP including on Rahul Gandhi’s ever- growing grey beard and his Burberry T-shirt. With over 2,800 km under his belt, Gandhi has managed to catch the attention of his sup- porters as well as de- tractors and seen quite a few celebrities includ- ing from the tinsel town and academia walking alongside him from time to time. However, some political pundits feel the party should have had more tangible political objectives for the yatra and ques- tioned the party for skipping poll-bound states of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Amid questions over the yatra translating into any electoral divi- dend, two recently- con- cluded assembly elec- tions turned out to be a mixed bag for the Con- gress as it was drubbed in Gujarat to its lowest- ever tally while won in Himachal. A clearer picture of the impact on the par- ty’s electoral fortunes would emerge in the as- sembly polls next year, including in Karnata- ka, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, which were covered well by the Yatra.
