‘Priyanka’s UP campaign remarkable’
Jaipur (PTI): The In-
dian voter has always
been capable of throw-
ing up surprises and
the BJP will also get to
know about it one day,
Congress leader
Shashi Tharoor said
on Sunday.
The Congress could
have done much better
in Uttarakhand and in
Goa, he said. “We had
very good chances of
being the single largest
party”, Tharoor said at
the Jaipur Literature
Festival (JLF).
“But mind you, in
both the states the num-
ber of voters is relative-
ly small, and that per-
haps contributed,” the
MP from Thiruvanan-
thapuram said.
Priyanka Gandhi
Vadra did remarkable
and energetic cam-
paigning for the party
in UP, he said. “”You
would have seen her
everywhere, including
getting arrested a cou-
ple of times by the Ut-
tar Pradesh Police. You
have seen her very
much on the spot and
running through the
state. From my point of
view, I don’t think that
the Congress per se can
be faulted on the
grounds of one per-
son’s campaigning,”
Tharoor said.
The 66-year-old lead-
er also expressed sur-
prise over political ana-
lysts describing the re-
sults as a “foregone
conclusion”, saying
very few predicted
BJP’s victory until the
exit polls came out.
“If it was a foregone
conclusion, all the pun-
dits should have been
saying that for the last
five-six weeks of elec-
tion campaign. Very
few, if any did, it was
only when the exit polls
were coming out that
the tale turned and peo-
ple said BJP is going to
win. Until then there
was no question in my
mind that most of peo-
ple were expecting a
very, very close fight,
and some were saying
anecdotally that Sama-
jwadiPartywasahead,”
Tharoor said.

cret place, and looked

Laat Saab’ is taken out
on a buffalo cart with
Holi revellers hurling
‘jutas’ at him, Vikas
Khurana, the head of

The tradition dates
back to the early 18th
century, when Nawab
Abdullah Khan, the last
emperor of the dynasty,
ruled Shahjahanpur.
Khan, who also
founded Shahjahanpur,
was said to be popular
among both Hindus
and Muslims. The tra-
dition of people carry-
ing out a procession

on a camel continued
till 1857.

n 26th May, preparations
for oath taking were on
the way for the lone face
who brought in a majority
non Congress government
for the first time in the
history of Indian democ-
racy. The occasion was
graced by not only the top leaders of BJP and its al-
lies but also by the opposi-
tion leaders who were
stunned by the results.
The most important fea-
ture of Narendra Modi’s
oath ceremony was pres-
ence of the heads of
SAARC countries who be-
came witness to the swear-
ing-in of Modi as the 15th
Prime Minister of India.
“This is the first time
that India has invited
all SAARC members
to attend a swearing-
in ceremony of a
prime minister.
Due to the
strained relation-
ship with Paki-
stan, it has nev-
er happened be-
fore. It was a
big risk and at
the same time
it was a fresh
thought and
new initia-
tive,” said
Syed Akba-
ruddin, for-
mer diplo-
mat.
N a r e n -
dra Modi
had never
been even a
c a b i n e t
minister at
the centre
before tak-
ing over as
the Prime
Minister. But
the power of
quick deci-
s i o n - m a k i n g
prompted him to
take a bold decision on
black money in his first
ever cabinet meeting.
Modi announced setting
up of an SIT on black
money
.
“This decision sent a
strong message to the
country
. First of all, Modi
government has zero toler-
ance towards corruption
and secondly there is abso-
lutely no difference be-
tween talks and deeds of
Modi ji,” said Dr Jitendra
Singh, a cabinet minister.
On 15th August, 2014,
Modi hoisted the tricolour
for the first time from ram-
parts of the historical Red
Fort. He presented the
blueprint of decry before
the nation.
“If you will work for 12
hours, I will put in 14
hours…if you work for 14
hours, my contribution
will be 15 hours… because
I am not in the role of
Prime Minister…I have
come before you as the
Pradhan Sevak,” Modi had
said in his maiden speech
from Red Fort.
In his first speech, Modi
focused on cleanliness and
advocated for public par-
ticipation.
“I have to start the
Swachh Bharat Mission
from the coming 2nd Octo-
ber…there should be facil-
ity of toilets in every
school… there should be
separate toilets for girls…
then only girls will not
quit school,” Modi had an-
nounced.
The poor and the farm-
ers have always been a pri-
ority for Narendra Modi.
To hand over benefits of
government schemes di-
rectly to their bank ac-
counts, Narendra Modi
launched Jan-Dhan
scheme on 28th August,
2014 and opened zero bal-
ance accounts for them.
The direct benefit trans-
fer has eliminated the
leakage in transfer of
government benefits to
poor by removing all the
intermediaries.
“Pradhan Mantri Jan-
Dhan Yojana…opening
bank accounts at such a
large scale was an extraor-
dinary operation…when
we were asked to hold 100
digital mela in 100 days
then we said that it’s im-
possible but Modi ji made
us do that… and that
brought in such a momen-
tum that we were able to
give a big digital push,”
said Amitabh Kant, CEO,
Niti Aayog.
On 2nd October 2014,
Modi launched Swachh
Bharat Abhiyan to mark
the occasion of birth an-
niversary of Mahatma
Gandhi. Modi went to Var-
anasi and volunteered to
clean the famous Assi
Ghat. This campaign be-
came part of everyone cut-
ting across the divide of
mass and class. Narendra
Modi gave utmost impor-
tance this campaign. So
much so, that he gave re-
spect to sanitation work-
ers by washing their feet
at Sangam ghat in Praya-
graj. By washing feet of
people from one of the
weakest sections of the so-
ciety, Modi sent a strong
message.
“We have to do this
work…I am appealing to
every youth of the coun-
try.. come and join us,”
Modi had said.
Modi was also worried
about the miseries of ru-
ral women who had to face
deadly fumes while cook-
ing. When he launched the
Ujjwala scheme in 2016 he
had the pictures of his
mother Hira Baa grap-
pling with fumes and
drudgery during cooking.
Tears would roll down her
eyes while blowing the fire
to do the cooking.
On 1st May, 2016, Ujjwa-
la Scheme was launched.
The scheme entailed free
distribution of LPG cylin-
der and gas stove to poor
women from rural areas. A
compassionate Modi
understood the miser-
ies of poor people and
strived to provide toi-
lets, homes, good roads,
pure drinking water
and 24X7 electricity to
poor.
“When the country
celebrates 75th anni-
versary of independ-
ence, there should not
be any family de-
prived of it’s own
home,” Modi had said.
Modi had achieved
most of these land-
marks for Gujarat
while serving as its
Chief Minister. Now, as
the Prime Minister, he
was striving to make this
more inclusive, for the
complete nation.
“Prime Minister Modi
tried to give scale and size
to whatever he achieved as
chief minister of Gujarat.
Modi launched Namami
Gange the way he revived
Narmada river in Gujarat.
The way he provided
homes to homeless in
Kutch post earthquake, he
is striving to give every
family a home in the coun-
try,” Anurag Thakur, I & B
minister had observed.
Modi was fast on his
way to structural reforms
for injecting necessary
provisions towards the
welfare of poor, women
and farmers. He replaced
Yojana Aayog with Niti
Aayog to take on the new
challenges.
“Niti Aayog is one such
agency of central govern-
ment which works with
state governments in
states…it undertakes lot of
unique initiatives which
involve transformation of
backwarddistricts.Wealso
undertake Atal Innovation
Mission…but the main tar-
get of Niti Aayog is not to
work as a ministry but to
act as an institution of ide-
as to support all the minis-
tries and take the country
forward on the progress
path,” Amitabh Kant, CEO,
Niti Aayog had said.

New Delhi: This time

party had made major
preparations for three
states — Uttarakhand,
Goa and Manipur. Tak-
ing lessons from the last
time, this time the party
had already posted sen-

states, but all its prepa-
rations were in vain.
Congress leaders are
saying that if the party
had made similar prep-
arations in the last elec-
tions, then its govern-
ment would have been
formed in both Goa and
Manipur. But then the
Congress kept its eyes
closed. When the re-
sults started coming in
and it was felt that the
Congress needed man-
agement, the leaders
were rushed, but by
then it was too late.
Thus, taking lessons
from last time, this time
Congress had made ad-
vance preparations. DK
Shivakumar was plant-

with Bhupesh Baghel to
Uttarakhand. On the
other hand, Jairam
Ramesh was already sit-
ting in Manipur and
Mukul Wasnik and Vin-
cent Pala were sent to
help him. The Congress
had kept special aircraft
and helicopters ready,
so that the MLAs could
be ‘taken out’ if needed.
In Goa, Congress had
already locked its can-

ent hotels, but all these
preparations proved to
be futile, because nei-
ther did the Congress

New Delhi (ANI): India
is developing a new air-

would be able to strike
at enemy targets at
more than 800 kilome-

The missile earlier
had the capability of

300 kilometers after be-
ing released from a Su-

“The range of the
BrahMos missile has
been increased already
and with the advantage
of being airborne at
high altitudes, the mis-
sile can travel a longer
distance and can hit tar-
gets at 800 kms and be-

The BrahMos missile
was recently in the
limelight after one of it
was misfired due to a
technical malfunction
from an Indian Air
Force unit during a
Command Air Staff In-
spection (CASI) there.
The missile landed in
Pakistani territory
causing very less dam-
age to the property and
equipment there and no
damage to lives there.
After the incident, In-
dia sent a letter to the
Pakistani authorities
deeply regretting the
incident and also issued
a statement in this re-
gard.
Pakistan is trying to
rake up the issue of the
misfiring of the
BrahMos and trying to
question the safety of
India’s missile arsenal
at the international lev-
el but sources said the
BrahMos was just a tac-
tical missile.
India has enhanced
the range of the tactical
missile recently and it
can go beyond 500 kilo-

grade in its software.

Akhilesh’s allies come with
pre-poll expiry for voter!
Mahesh Sharma
New Delhi: Samajwadi
Party national presi-
dent Akhilesh Yadav
contested the elections
for the third time in the
last five years by form-
ing an alliance and
could not succeed. He
fought alone in 2012 and
formed the govern-
ment. He had forged an
alliance with the Con-
gress in the 2017 and
then the slogan of ‘UP
ke do ladke’ (2 boys of
UP) had become fa-
mous. At that time
Prashant Kishor, the
strategist, was making
the ‘2 ladke’ contest.
But the alliance did not
succeed. The perfor-
mance of both the SP
and the Congress was
disappointing.
After this Akhilesh
left the Congress’ side
and aligned with the
arch-rival Bahujan Sa-
maj Party before the
2019 Lok Sabha polls,
after which the ‘Bhua-
Bhatija’ (aunt-nephew)
alliance was discussed
in great detail. Mulay-
am Singh and Mayawa-
ti’s grievances were re-
moved and Mulayam’s
daughter-in-law Dimple
Yadav touched Mayawa-
ti’s feet on the stage.
Akhilesh also included
Rashtriya Lok Dal in
this alliance by giving
seats from his quota.
But this time also the al-
liance failed.
This time in the 2022
assembly elections, the
SP allied with other
parties except BSP and
Congress. Akhilesh
aligned with Jayant
Choudhary of Rashtri-
ya Lok Dal and also
with former BJP ally
Omprakash Rajbhar’s
Suheldev Bharatiya Sa-
maj Party. He also
aligned with Krishna
Patel’s Apna Dal (Com-
munist) and Sanjay
Chauhan’s People’s Par-
ty
. There has been a big
increase in the vote
bank of the SP. But it
seems that the parties
with whom the SP coor-
dinates are unable to
transfer votes to it.

Police in Muzaffarnagar district

Deoband Deputy Jailer last week
after an encounter. The encounter
broke out when police were

bike-borne miscreants were
intercepted and an encounter
ensued between them and police.
One of the accused was identified

AMIDSP-RLDRISEIN2022 POLLS
Noida (PTI): The BJP
reigned supreme on
nearly 70% constituen-
cies in western UP de-
spite losing 15 seats in
the 2022 assembly polls,
even as the Samajwadi
Party (SP) and its ally
Rashtriya Lok Dal
(RLD) showed a rise in
the region. While the
BJP completely swept
somedistrictslikeAgra,
Mathura, Ghaziabad
and Gautam Buddh Na-
gar, the Opposition alli-
ance too scored 100 per
cent in Shamli and Mo-
radabad, and put up a
good show in Muzaffar-
nagar and Meerut.
In the 2017 assembly
polls, BJP had swept
over 300 of the 403 seats
across Uttar Pradesh,
the most populous state
in the country
. The par-
ty won 255 seats this
year, while the SP with
its allies notched up
victory on 125 seats of
the state, nearly double
from its last electoral
outing. In the 126 seats
across 24 districts of
western UP, the BJP
had won 100 (79%) of
the seats in 2017. This
time, its tally stood at 85
(67%). The SP RLD
together won 41 (32%)
of the 126 seats in the
region. The Jayant
Chaudhary-led RLD,
which was reduced to a
single seat in the 2017
polls, fought on 33 seats
this time and won 8 of
them. The BJP lost all
three seats in Shamli
district, including a sit-
ting minister from Tha-
na Bhawan, 4 of the 7
seats in Meerut, and 4
of the 6 seats in Muzaf-
farnagar all three are
Jat-dominated dis-
tricts. It also lost all six
seats in Moradabad,
three of the 4 seats in
both Rampur and
Sambhal districts. The
minister’s defeat came
even as another minis-
ter in Ghaziabad won
by a margin of over 1
lakh votes and the BJP
managed to fully sweep
districts like Agra, Ma-
thura, Aligarh — all
three have a sizeable
Jat population, Buland-
shahr, Ghaziabad and
Gautam Buddh Nagar,
negating the idea that
the recent farmers’ agi-
tation had an impact
across western UP, as
per poll observers.
The Bahujan Samaj
Party, the Congress and
others failed to get even
a single seat in the re-
gion. There is no offi-
cial demarcation of
what constitutes west-
ern UP. Political parties
have different organi-
sational structures and
classifications for the
region. However, 126 as-
sembly constituencies
in 24 districts that lie
west of Etawah are gen-
erally taken to be west-
ern UP. These 24 dis-
tricts are Agra, Mathu-
ra, Aligarh, Meerut,
Ghaziabad, Buland-
shahr, Baghpat, Hapur,
Muzaffarnagar, Sham-
li, Gautam Buddh Na-

Muslims made mistake in
choosing right alternative:
BSP on Uttarakhand loss
Lucknow (PTI): The
BSP on Sunday said
that despite its best ef-
forts to defeat the BJP
in the Uttarakhand
Assembly polls, the
party won because
Muslims chose the
wrong alternative.
The BSP arrived at
the conclusion at a
meeting of office-
bearers and workers
of its Uttarakhand
unit with party presi-
dent Mayawati here to
review its perfor-
mance in the just con-
cluded assembly polls.
“It was found during
the review (meeting)
that like UP, in Uttara-
khand too, a lot of ef-
fort was put in to de-
feat the ruling BJP
but especially the peo-
ple of the Muslim
community made a
mistake in choosing
the right alternative.
Due to this, despite
the strong resentment
among people against
the BJP on issues like
poverty, inflation, un-
employment and its
arrogant and auto-
cratic attitude, the
BJP benefitted
again,” the BSP said
in a statement. “It was
also felt at the meet-
ing that if the attitude
of these people does
not change in future,
then it will be very
difficult to resolve the
problem,” it said.

in a case registered
under the UP Gang-
ster and Anti-Social
Activities Act. The
Division Bench of
Justice Ashwani Ku-
mar Mishra and Jus-
tice Rajnish Kumar
passed this order
while hearing a Crim-
inal Misc Bail Appli-
cation filed by the mi-
nor. The contention of
the counsel for the
petitioner is that the
petitioner is a juve-
nile and is implicated
in the case on the ba-
sis of a solitary FIR
registered against un-
named as case under
Section 379 IPC and
3/5Ka/8 of Cow
Slaughter Act, where-
in also no recovery
was made from the
petitioner. The sub-
mission is that the al-
legations on the basis
of material at best
discloses a simple of-
fence which would fall
in the category of law
and order and has no
trappings of an of-
fence concerning a
larger public order,
therefore lodgement
of FIR is an abuse of
process of law.

ROAD AHEAD FOR YADAV
IS FULL OF CHALLENGES
First India Bureau
Lucknow: For Sama-

one journey has ended
and another has just be-
gun. In the recent-
ly-held Assembly elec-
tions, he may have
more than doubled the
number of seats his
party had won in 2017
and the vote percentage
also spiked one and a
half times, but the chal-
lenges that lie ahead for
the 48-year-old leader
have also increased
manifold.
The biggest challenge
for Akhilesh in the com-
ing months would be to
keep his party together.
Five years is a long time
and not many of the
newly elected legisla-
tors would be in the
mood to struggle
against the establish-
ment for this period.
Besides keeping the leg-
islature party intact,
Akhilesh will also have
to work overtime to pre-
vent an exodus from his
party the kind that he
had encouraged from
other parties before the
elections.
The SP is almost
brimming over with
turncoats and there is
no guarantee that such
elements will not turn
away again. These turn-
coats, interestingly, are
a major reason for the
SP’s below expectation
performance. Akhilesh
chose the ‘outsiders’
over his loyal partymen
when it came to ticket
distribution and this
led to his cadres retir-
ing into their shells.
The defeat of Swami
Prasad Maurya and
Dharam Singh Saini,
both of whom came
from the BJP, is an ex-
ample. Akhilesh will
now have to constantly
boost the morale of his
party workers and reas-
sure them that the par-
ty has a future in state
politics. While keeping
his OBC vote bank in-
tact, the SP chief also
needs to expand his
vote base.
In the midst of elec-
tions, Akhilesh dam-
aged himself to a large
extent when he said in
Pratapgarh — “Raja
Bhaiyya kaun?” Raja
Bhaiyya, in at least six
districts of the Avadh
region, is an icon for the
Thakur community.
Akhilesh’s uncalled for
remark made sure that
the Thakurs did not
vote for and support the
SP, leading to the defeat
of the party’s Thakur
leaders like Arvind
Singh Gope.
Lucknow(ANI): After
the poll defeat in UP,
Samajwadi Party ally
Pragatisheel Sama-
jwadi Party (Lohiya)
chief Shivpal Singh
Yadav said that the at-
mosphere was condu-
cive for the party to
win the elections but
there were organisa-
tional shortcomings.
Shivpal said, “Though
the atmosphere was
conducive there were
shortcomings in the
party.
We will contemplate
and review the poll out-
come. We will work
again after the review.
We welcome the peo-
ple’s mandate. We will
not sit idle and will be
among people. We will
strengthen the organi-
sation.” Asked about
the alliance winning a
lesser number of seats
than the party’s earlier
claims, the PSP(L)
chief said that the vote
share of the party has
increased. ”There have
been flaws and we will
correct them.
The people had taken
the decision to oust the
BJP from power, but
there were flaws in the
organisation. Our vote-
share has increased
along with the strength
in the Assembly but
somewhere the BJP got
the benefit,” he said.
Talking about his re-
sponsibility in the par-
ty, Yadav said that he
will “fulfil whatever

Lucknow: This year’s
assembly elections
again established the
notion that only the
party that wins the
maximum number of
reserved seats in UP
gets success in forming
the govt in the state.
According to the elec-
tion results, out of the
86 reserved seats, the
BJP alliance succeeded
to win 65 seats. This fig-
ure of seats is 75 per-
cent of the total re-
served seats. The saf-
fron party also man-
aged to make inroads
among the Jatav vote
bank, which was once
considered the base
vote bank of the BSP.
Whereas the main op-
position party SP could
get only 20 seats. BSP
and Cong could not get
a single seat from the
reserved category. The
BJP has, since the last
few elections, laid the
foundation of a multi-
pronged approach to
strengthen the hold
among the Dalit vote
bank. With the help of
this strategy, the party
was successful in mak-
ing an impact on a large
section of the non-Jat-
av voters.
This time too, BJP
had fielded a large num-
ber of non-Jatav candi-
dates. In these, candi-
dates of Valmiki, Kha-
tik, Pasi, Dhobi, Kori,
Dhangar and Dhanuk
sub-castes were mainly
included. However, this
time BJP strategists
had also focused on Jat-
av voters. For this pur-
pose, the former gover-
nor of Uttarakhand,
Babyrani Maurya was
given special responsi-
bility
. Former IPS Asim
Arun, who belongs to
this community, was
fielded as a candidate
fromKannauj.However,
BJP tried to give a big
message by fielding Jag-
pal Singh of Jatav com-
munity from the gener-
al seat of Saharanpur.
But Jagpal lost the elec-
tion to Ashu Malik of
SP
. Along with this, both
the seats reserved for
the Scheduled Tribes
category were also occu-
pied by the BJP

power by winning 69% of the reserved seats.

In the 2017 elections, the
number of reserved seats
had gone up to 86. By the
order of the SC, for the
first time in the state, two
seats were reserved for
Scheduled Tribes. These
seats in Sonbhadra dis-
trict are Obra and Duddhi.

YOUR
DAY
Horoscope by
Saurabbh Sachdeva
chools today
are grappling
with the pan-
demic. There
are schools
teaching on-
line as well as
offline, while most are
adopting a hybrid sys-
tem where students at-
tend a few days of
school, while on oth-
ers, they learn virtu-
ally
. Teachers are natu-
rally under tremen-
dous pressure to com-
plete courses, and
more importantly,
make learning fun and
palatable, to a new gen-
eration of learners.
This is not an easy
task, given that they
have to manage sever-
al other facets includ-
ing paperwork, admin-
istrative jobs and so
on. Add to this the bit-
ter truth that many of
our teachers, albeit
extremely hardwork-
ing and dedicated, are
teaching not necessar-
ily because they want
to but rather because
they ‘need’ to. This last
factor particularly,
robs some of the pas-
sion and spontaneity
out of teaching and
makes it a mundane
pursuit, which in turn
reflects in the stu-
dents’ enthusiasm, or
lack thereof, in class.
In my observation,
when any profession is
infused with people
who are not connected
with that profession
from time to time, it
lends a certain vitality
and freshness. I re-
member in my school
too, every other term,
there would be a Doc-
tor, or a Businessman,
a Sportsperson, who
would take a sabbati-
cal from their own
work and come to
teach on our campus.
Their approach, their
upbeat mood, their un-
orthodox methods,
would imbibe the
classroom with an al-
together new and in-
fectious energy. And
therefore I am a
staunch advocate of
people from all walks
of life contributing to
teaching, whenever
they can. I can share
my own experience of
how I came to teach as
the best example.
Teaching is a pas-
sion, turned into a vo-
cation. However, I did
not come to teaching
from the beginning.
After having spent
over a decade in the
Media Industry, I felt
compelled to leave an
established career in
Mumbai, move back to
Jaipur, and become, an
educator. Like I, there
are many who have
found teaching to be
their calling, a little
late in life. That
doesn’t matter though.
We need more passion-
ate teachers. I’d like to
share my own realiza-
tions since having be-
come a teacher about
ten years ago.
When I was a stu-
dent at boarding
school, now over two
decades ago, my teach-
ers told me that there
wasn’t a single day
that they didn’t learn
something new. These
were masters we idol-
ised, worshipped,
poked fun of, at the
same time, revered. To
have them confess that
they did not know it
all, was a revelation.
Of course, this con-
fession was long for-
gotten. Relegated to a
deep recess of my
memory
, until I, the ac-
cidental teacher, stum-
bled upon the very
same realization. And
from that crevice of
my mind’s labyrinth,
t h e s e
words from my own
teachers, revealed
themselves.
My fortuitous foray
into the world of teach-
ing has reacquainted
me with myself. It has
given me purpose,
pride, and ignited a
passion.
That I have no for-
mal education that
qualifies me to teach, a
fact sometimes held
against me, I feel is my
biggest advantage. It
does not colour my ap-
proach to my work. In
fact, I hardly perceive
it as work in the first
place. No training, no
career-long teaching
experience, are facts
that have, in fact,
granted me a great
sense of freedom and
liberty
. My interaction
with my students is
spontaneous, free-
wheeling, spirited. In
turn, theirs with me is
uninhibited, uncen-
sored, unfiltered. The
way I plan, and un-
plan my workshops
and lessons benefits
from a similarly open
and experimental
ethos. There is a desti-
nation but how my stu-
dents and I reach it is
random, interactive
and on occasion eman-
cipating!
I have come to real-
ize that to be an effec-
tive teacher and an in-
spiring mentor, the
person cannot feel or
act ‘above’. That there
MUST be a genuine
openness to learn with
each encounter, each
interaction. That stu-
dents in fact, in many
cases, teach the teach-
er more, than the
teacher does, them.
Teaching then, is a
legacy of continued
learning. A process
that is infinite. A pur-
suit that endless. A
calling.
The reason I have
shared this, like I men-
tioned in the begin-
ning, is to suggest to
all those people who
might be unsure or dis-
illusioned in their cur-
rent vocations, that
teaching is a noble,
fulfilling, and extreme-
ly rewarding profes-
sion to consider. Addi-
tionally, what we ‘ac-
cidental’ teachers
bring to the table is a
practical, real-world
wisdom that is per-
haps less present in
career-educators. Re-
member, only happy,
contented people can
inspire a similarly pre-
disposed younger gen-
eration! And for all
you people out there,
Business owners,
Bankers, Lawyers, or
really any profession
you may practice – do
consider giving some
time to teaching. It is
the most meaningful,
satisfying, rewarding,
and desperately need-
ed way of giving back
to society!

  • 1. ‘Priyanka’s UP campaign remarkable’ Jaipur (PTI): The In- dian voter has always been capable of throw- ing up surprises and the BJP will also get to know about it one day, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Sunday. The Congress could have done much better in Uttarakhand and in Goa, he said. “We had very good chances of being the single largest party”, Tharoor said at the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF). “But mind you, in both the states the num- ber of voters is relative- ly small, and that per- haps contributed,” the MP from Thiruvanan- thapuram said. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra did remarkable and energetic cam- paigning for the party in UP, he said. “”You would have seen her everywhere, including getting arrested a cou- ple of times by the Ut- tar Pradesh Police. You have seen her very much on the spot and running through the state. From my point of view, I don’t think that the Congress per se can be faulted on the grounds of one per- son’s campaigning,” Tharoor said. The 66-year-old lead- er also expressed sur- prise over political ana- lysts describing the re- sults as a “foregone conclusion”, saying very few predicted BJP’s victory until the exit polls came out. “If it was a foregone conclusion, all the pun- dits should have been saying that for the last five-six weeks of elec- tion campaign. Very few, if any did, it was only when the exit polls were coming out that the tale turned and peo- ple said BJP is going to win. Until then there was no question in my mind that most of peo- ple were expecting a very, very close fight, and some were saying anecdotally that Sama- jwadiPartywasahead,” Tharoor said. Shashi Tharoor speaking at Jaipur Literature Festival on Sunday. —PHOTO BY ANI EXPERT ASSESSMENT l India’s Rishabh Pant scored the fastest Test fifty by an Indian batter on Sunday when he completed his half- century in 28 deliveries on the second day of the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. l Pant broke Kapil Dev’s almost 40-year record of the fastest Test fifty by an Indian batter. Kapil Dev had scored a 30-ball half-century while batting against Pa- kistan in the Karachi Test in December, 1982. l Earlier Sri Lanka was sent packing for just 109 with Jasprit Bumrah taking 5 wickets. At stumps, SL in second in- nings were 28/1 needing 419 more runs to wind after India declared their second innings at 303/9. Second leg of Budget session begins today New Delhi: With the second leg of the Budg- et session slated to start on Monday, the Congress appeared ap- prehensive on Sunday of other Opposition parties like the Trina- mool Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party not coming together to put up a united front against the govern- ment in Parliament. At a meeting con- vened by Congress president Sonia Gan- dhi, Leader of the Op- position in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge is learnt to have ex- pressed doubts that some parties may not join if the Congress convened a meeting given the changed po- litical scenario after the Assembly election outcome. • 4. PERSPECTIVE LUCKNOW | MONDAY, MARCH 14, 2022 04 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia n 26th May, preparations for oath taking were on the way for the lone face who brought in a majority non Congress government for the first time in the history of Indian democ- racy. The occasion was graced by not only the top leaders of BJP and its al- lies but also by the opposi- tion leaders who were stunned by the results. The most important fea- ture of Narendra Modi’s oath ceremony was pres- ence of the heads of SAARC countries who be- came witness to the swear- ing-in of Modi as the 15th Prime Minister of India. “This is the first time that India has invited all SAARC members to attend a swearing- in ceremony of a prime minister. Due to the strained relation- ship with Paki- stan, it has nev- er happened be- fore. It was a big risk and at the same time it was a fresh thought and new initia- tive,” said Syed Akba- ruddin, for- mer diplo- mat. N a r e n - dra Modi had never been even a c a b i n e t minister at the centre before tak- ing over as the Prime Minister. But the power of quick deci- s i o n - m a k i n g prompted him to take a bold decision on black money in his first ever cabinet meeting. Modi announced setting up of an SIT on black money . “This decision sent a strong message to the country . First of all, Modi government has zero toler- ance towards corruption and secondly there is abso- lutely no difference be- tween talks and deeds of Modi ji,” said Dr Jitendra Singh, a cabinet minister. On 15th August, 2014, Modi hoisted the tricolour for the first time from ram- parts of the historical Red Fort. He presented the blueprint of decry before the nation. “If you will work for 12 hours, I will put in 14 hours…if you work for 14 hours, my contribution will be 15 hours… because I am not in the role of Prime Minister…I have come before you as the Pradhan Sevak,” Modi had said in his maiden speech from Red Fort. In his first speech, Modi focused on cleanliness and advocated for public par- ticipation. “I have to start the Swachh Bharat Mission from the coming 2nd Octo- ber…there should be facil- ity of toilets in every school… there should be separate toilets for girls… then only girls will not quit school,” Modi had an- nounced. The poor and the farm- ers have always been a pri- ority for Narendra Modi. To hand over benefits of government schemes di- rectly to their bank ac- counts, Narendra Modi launched Jan-Dhan scheme on 28th August, 2014 and opened zero bal- ance accounts for them. The direct benefit trans- fer has eliminated the leakage in transfer of government benefits to poor by removing all the intermediaries. “Pradhan Mantri Jan- Dhan Yojana…opening bank accounts at such a large scale was an extraor- dinary operation…when we were asked to hold 100 digital mela in 100 days then we said that it’s im- possible but Modi ji made us do that… and that brought in such a momen- tum that we were able to give a big digital push,” said Amitabh Kant, CEO, Niti Aayog. On 2nd October 2014, Modi launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to mark the occasion of birth an- niversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Modi went to Var- anasi and volunteered to clean the famous Assi Ghat. This campaign be- came part of everyone cut- ting across the divide of mass and class. Narendra Modi gave utmost impor- tance this campaign. So much so, that he gave re- spect to sanitation work- ers by washing their feet at Sangam ghat in Praya- graj. By washing feet of people from one of the weakest sections of the so- ciety, Modi sent a strong message. “We have to do this work…I am appealing to every youth of the coun- try.. come and join us,” Modi had said. Modi was also worried about the miseries of ru- ral women who had to face deadly fumes while cook- ing. When he launched the Ujjwala scheme in 2016 he had the pictures of his mother Hira Baa grap- pling with fumes and drudgery during cooking. Tears would roll down her eyes while blowing the fire to do the cooking. On 1st May, 2016, Ujjwa- la Scheme was launched. The scheme entailed free distribution of LPG cylin- der and gas stove to poor women from rural areas. A compassionate Modi understood the miser- ies of poor people and strived to provide toi- lets, homes, good roads, pure drinking water and 24X7 electricity to poor. “When the country celebrates 75th anni- versary of independ- ence, there should not be any family de- prived of it’s own home,” Modi had said. Modi had achieved most of these land- marks for Gujarat while serving as its Chief Minister. Now, as the Prime Minister, he was striving to make this more inclusive, for the complete nation. “Prime Minister Modi tried to give scale and size to whatever he achieved as chief minister of Gujarat. Modi launched Namami Gange the way he revived Narmada river in Gujarat. The way he provided homes to homeless in Kutch post earthquake, he is striving to give every family a home in the coun- try,” Anurag Thakur, I & B minister had observed. Modi was fast on his way to structural reforms for injecting necessary provisions towards the welfare of poor, women and farmers. He replaced Yojana Aayog with Niti Aayog to take on the new challenges. “Niti Aayog is one such agency of central govern- ment which works with state governments in states…it undertakes lot of unique initiatives which involve transformation of backwarddistricts.Wealso undertake Atal Innovation Mission…but the main tar- get of Niti Aayog is not to work as a ministry but to act as an institution of ide- as to support all the minis- tries and take the country forward on the progress path,” Amitabh Kant, CEO, Niti Aayog had said. Tak- ing lessons from the last time, this time the party had already posted sen- ior leaders in these states, but all its prepa- rations were in vain. Congress leaders are saying that if the party had made similar prep- arations in the last elec- tions, then its govern- ment would have been formed in both Goa and Manipur. But then the Congress kept its eyes closed. When the re- sults started coming in and it was felt that the Congress needed man- agement, the leaders were rushed, but by then it was too late. Thus, taking lessons from last time, this time Congress had made ad- vance preparations. DK Shivakumar was plant- ed along with P Chidam- baram in Goa. Deepend- er Hooda was sent along with Bhupesh Baghel to Uttarakhand. On the other hand, Jairam Ramesh was already sit- ting in Manipur and Mukul Wasnik and Vin- cent Pala were sent to help him. The Congress had kept special aircraft and helicopters ready, so that the MLAs could be ‘taken out’ if needed. Akhilesh’s allies come with pre-poll expiry for voter! Mahesh Sharma New Delhi: Samajwadi Party national presi- dent Akhilesh Yadav contested the elections for the third time in the last five years by form- ing an alliance and could not succeed. He fought alone in 2012 and formed the govern- ment. He had forged an alliance with the Con- gress in the 2017 and then the slogan of ‘UP ke do ladke’ (2 boys of UP) had become fa- mous. At that time Prashant Kishor, the strategist, was making the ‘2 ladke’ contest. But the alliance did not succeed. The perfor- mance of both the SP and the Congress was disappointing. After this Akhilesh left the Congress’ side and aligned with the arch-rival Bahujan Sa- maj Party before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, after which the ‘Bhua- Bhatija’ (aunt-nephew) alliance was discussed in great detail. Mulay- am Singh and Mayawa- ti’s grievances were re- moved and Mulayam’s daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav touched Mayawa- ti’s feet on the stage. Akhilesh also included Rashtriya Lok Dal in this alliance by giving seats from his quota. But this time also the al- liance failed. This time in the 2022 assembly elections, the SP allied with other parties except BSP and Congress. Akhilesh aligned with Jayant Choudhary of Rashtri- ya Lok Dal and also with former BJP ally Omprakash Rajbhar’s Suheldev Bharatiya Sa- maj Party. He also aligned with Krishna Patel’s Apna Dal (Com- munist) and Sanjay Chauhan’s People’s Par- ty . There has been a big increase in the vote bank of the SP. In the 2017 assembly polls, BJP had swept over 300 of the 403 seats across Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in the country . The par- ty won 255 seats this year, while the SP with its allies notched up victory on 125 seats of the state, nearly double from its last electoral outing. In the 126 seats across 24 districts of western UP, the BJP had won 100 (79%) of the seats in 2017. This time, its tally stood at 85 (67%). The SP RLD together won 41 (32%) of the 126 seats in the region. The Jayant Chaudhary-led RLD, which was reduced to a single seat in the 2017 polls, fought on 33 seats this time and won 8 of them. The BJP lost all three seats in Shamli district, including a sit- ting minister from Tha- na Bhawan, 4 of the 7 seats in Meerut, and 4 of the 6 seats in Muzaf- farnagar all three are Jat-dominated dis- tricts. It also lost all six seats in Moradabad, three of the 4 seats in both Rampur and Sambhal districts. The minister’s defeat came even as another minis- ter in Ghaziabad won by a margin of over 1 lakh votes and the BJP managed to fully sweep districts like Agra, Ma- thura, Aligarh — all three have a sizeable Jat population, Buland- shahr, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar, negating the idea that the recent farmers’ agi- tation had an impact across western UP, as per poll observers. The Bahujan Samaj Party, the Congress and others failed to get even a single seat in the re- gion. There is no offi- cial demarcation of what constitutes west- ern UP. Political parties have different organi- sational structures and classifications for the region. In the recent- ly-held Assembly elec- tions, he may have more than doubled the number of seats his party had won in 2017 and the vote percentage also spiked one and a half times, but the chal- lenges that lie ahead for the 48-year-old leader have also increased manifold. The biggest challenge for Akhilesh in the com- ing months would be to keep his party together. Five years is a long time and not many of the newly elected legisla- tors would be in the mood to struggle against the establish- ment for this period. Besides keeping the leg- islature party intact, Akhilesh will also have to work overtime to pre- vent an exodus from his party the kind that he had encouraged from other parties before the elections. The SP is almost brimming over with turncoats and there is no guarantee that such elements will not turn away again. These turn- coats, interestingly, are a major reason for the SP’s below expectation performance. Akhilesh chose the ‘outsiders’ over his loyal partymen when it came to ticket distribution and this led to his cadres retir- ing into their shells. The defeat of Swami Prasad Maurya and Dharam Singh Saini, both of whom came from the BJP, is an ex- ample. Akhilesh will now have to constantly boost the morale of his party workers and reas- sure them that the par- ty has a future in state politics. While keeping his OBC vote bank in- tact, the SP chief also needs to expand his vote base. In the midst of elec- tions, Akhilesh dam- aged himself to a large extent when he said in Pratapgarh — “Raja Bhaiyya kaun?” Raja Bhaiyya, in at least six districts of the Avadh region, is an icon for the Thakur community. Akhilesh’s uncalled for remark made sure that the Thakurs did not vote for and support the SP, leading to the defeat of the party’s Thakur leaders like Arvind Singh Gope. Lucknow(ANI): After the poll defeat in UP, Samajwadi Party ally Pragatisheel Sama- jwadi Party (Lohiya) chief Shivpal Singh Yadav said that the at- mosphere was condu- cive for the party to win the elections but there were organisa- tional shortcomings. Shivpal said, “Though the atmosphere was conducive there were shortcomings in the party. We will contemplate and review the poll out- come. We will work again after the review. We welcome the peo- ple’s mandate. We will not sit idle and will be among people. We will strengthen the organi- sation.” Asked about the alliance winning a lesser number of seats than the party’s earlier claims, the PSP(L) chief said that the vote share of the party has increased. ”There have been flaws and we will correct them. The people had taken the decision to oust the BJP from power, but there were flaws in the organisation. Our vote- share has increased along with the strength in the Assembly but somewhere the BJP got the benefit,” he said. Talking about his re- sponsibility in the par- ty, Yadav said that he will “fulfil whatever duty is given”. L u c k n o w ( A N I ) : Suheldev Bahujan Sa- maj Party (SBSP) presi- dent Om Prakash Rajb- har on Saturday claimed that manipula- tion of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) led to the loss of Samajwadi Party and its alliance part- ners in the just-conclud- ed elections in UP. Rajb- har, an OBC leader from eastern UP, said, “The Samajwadi Party and SBSP alliance lost be- cause of the hacking of EVMs besides Mayawa- ti’s BSP and Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM. The BSP and AIMIM fielded candidates of the same caste and communities as fielded by the SP and its alli- ance partners. The SP has a s t r o n g h o l d amongst Mus- lims and Yadavs. In eastern UP districts like Ghazipur a n d V a r a - n a s i , t h e B S P and the AIMIM fielded Yadav and Muslim can- didates against the SP candidates, which split votes of the Opposition parties, ensuring BJP’s triumph.” He added, “The counting of votes took place almost six times in certain constituen- cies where the BJP was trailing in the initial phases. After six rounds of counting, once the BJP candi- dates came in the leads, the counting was stopped. The BJP had deputed entire state machinery in the elections.” The SBSP chief said, “Mayawati and Owaisi helped in creating buzz for the BJP. He has been credited for many important de- cisions made in the di- rection of protection of consumer interests. None of his judgments have ever been with- held by any apex court. His contribution in the field of social service is also commendable. Gyanendra Kumar Shukla Lucknow: This year’s assembly elections again established the notion that only the party that wins the maximum number of reserved seats in UP gets success in forming the govt in the state. According to the elec- tion results, out of the 86 reserved seats, the BJP alliance succeeded to win 65 seats. This fig- ure of seats is 75 per- cent of the total re- served seats. The saf- fron party also man- aged to make inroads among the Jatav vote bank, which was once considered the base vote bank of the BSP. Whereas the main op- position party SP could get only 20 seats. BSP and Cong could not get a single seat from the reserved category. The BJP has, since the last few elections, laid the foundation of a multi- pronged approach to strengthen the hold among the Dalit vote bank. With the help of this strategy, the party was successful in mak- ing an impact on a large section of the non-Jat- av voters. This time too, BJP had fielded a large num- ber of non-Jatav candi- dates. In these, candi- dates of Valmiki, Kha- tik, Pasi, Dhobi, Kori, Dhangar and Dhanuk sub-castes were mainly included. However, this time BJP strategists had also focused on Jat- av voters. For this pur- pose, the former gover- nor of Uttarakhand, Babyrani Maurya was given special responsi- bility . Former IPS Asim Arun, who belongs to this community, was fielded as a candidate fromKannauj. However, BJP tried to give a big message by fielding Jag- pal Singh of Jatav com- munity from the gener- al seat of Saharanpur. But Jagpal lost the elec- tion to Ashu Malik of SP . Along with this, both the seats reserved for the Scheduled Tribes category were also occu- pied by the BJP . YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva chools today are grappling with the pan- demic. There are schools teaching on- line as well as offline, while most are adopting a hybrid sys- tem where students at- tend a few days of school, while on oth- ers, they learn virtu- ally . Teachers are natu- rally under tremen- dous pressure to com- plete courses, and more importantly, make learning fun and palatable, to a new gen- eration of learners. This is not an easy task, given that they have to manage sever- al other facets includ- ing paperwork, admin- istrative jobs and so on. Add to this the bit- ter truth that many of our teachers, albeit extremely hardwork- ing and dedicated, are teaching not necessar- ily because they want to but rather because they ‘need’ to. This last factor particularly, robs some of the pas- sion and spontaneity out of teaching and makes it a mundane pursuit, which in turn reflects in the stu- dents’ enthusiasm, or lack thereof, in class. In my observation, when any profession is infused with people who are not connected with that profession from time to time, it lends a certain vitality and freshness. I re- member in my school too, every other term, there would be a Doc- tor, or a Businessman, a Sportsperson, who would take a sabbati- cal from their own work and come to teach on our campus. Their approach, their upbeat mood, their un- orthodox methods, would imbibe the classroom with an al- together new and in- fectious energy. And therefore I am a staunch advocate of people from all walks of life contributing to teaching, whenever they can. I can share my own experience of how I came to teach as the best example. Teaching is a pas- sion, turned into a vo- cation. However, I did not come to teaching from the beginning. After having spent over a decade in the Media Industry, I felt compelled to leave an established career in Mumbai, move back to Jaipur, and become, an educator. Like I, there are many who have found teaching to be their calling, a little late in life. That doesn’t matter though. We need more passion- ate teachers. I’d like to share my own realiza- tions since having be- come a teacher about ten years ago. When I was a stu- dent at boarding school, now over two decades ago, my teach- ers told me that there wasn’t a single day that they didn’t learn something new. These were masters we idol- ised, worshipped, poked fun of, at the same time, revered. To have them confess that they did not know it all, was a revelation. Of course, this con- fession was long for- gotten. Relegated to a deep recess of my memory , until I, the ac- cidental teacher, stum- bled upon the very same realization. And from that crevice of my mind’s labyrinth, t h e s e words from my own teachers, revealed themselves. My fortuitous foray into the world of teach- ing has reacquainted me with myself. It has given me purpose, pride, and ignited a passion. That I have no for- mal education that qualifies me to teach, a fact sometimes held against me, I feel is my biggest advantage. It does not colour my ap- proach to my work. In fact, I hardly perceive it as work in the first place. No training, no career-long teaching experience, are facts that have, in fact, granted me a great sense of freedom and liberty . My interaction with my students is spontaneous, free- wheeling, spirited. In turn, theirs with me is uninhibited, uncen- sored, unfiltered. The way I plan, and un- plan my workshops and lessons benefits from a similarly open and experimental ethos. There is a desti- nation but how my stu- dents and I reach it is random, interactive and on occasion eman- cipating! I have come to real- ize that to be an effec- tive teacher and an in- spiring mentor, the person cannot feel or act ‘above’. That there MUST be a genuine openness to learn with each encounter, each interaction. That stu- dents in fact, in many cases, teach the teach- er more, than the teacher does, them. Teaching then, is a legacy of continued learning. A process that is infinite. A pur- suit that endless. A calling. The reason I have shared this, like I men- tioned in the begin- ning, is to suggest to all those people who might be unsure or dis- illusioned in their cur- rent vocations, that teaching is a noble, fulfilling, and extreme- ly rewarding profes- sion to consider. Addi- tionally, what we ‘ac- cidental’ teachers bring to the table is a practical, real-world wisdom that is per- haps less present in career-educators. Re- member, only happy, contented people can inspire a similarly pre- disposed younger gen- eration! And for all you people out there, Business owners, Bankers, Lawyers, or really any profession you may practice – do consider giving some time to teaching. It is the most meaningful, satisfying, rewarding, and desperately need- ed way of giving back to society!
