fter capturing Kabul the Taliban
want to be seen as rulers rather
than just as a religious militia.
Eager to secure legitimacy – in-
ternationally and among Af-
ghans – closed-door negotiations
are afoot for a government inclu-
sive of non-Taliban Afghans. Will
these actually work out? And
what lies ahead for young, urban-
ised, internet-savvy Afghans
seeking to live in the 21st century
rather than the 7th? This choice
had been denied just a while ago.
UnderMullahOmar,theearlier
phase (1996-2001) of Taliban rule
had single-mindedly concentrat-
ed upon rigorous enforcement of
the Quranic injunction amr bil
ma’roof wa nahi ‘anil munkar
(promote that which is good and
approved, and forbid that which
is evil and disapproved). Imbibed
from madrasas scattered across
Pakistan, this was understood in
the sense of a demand for strict
religious policing.
Liberal Islamic scholars, how-
ever, say the injunction merely
enjoins believers to seek piety
through self-control. The Taliban
under Mullah Omar disagreed
emphatically with this inter-
pretation.
They carried
out stoning
of adulter-
ers to death, amputation of
limbs for theft, public floggings,
closure of girls’ schools, extreme
limits on the mobility of women
and destruction of the 2,000-year-
old Bamiyan Buddhas. Similar
actions do not exist in the living
memory of older Afghans.
The new face suggests that
amr bil ma’roof will henceforth
be more liberally interpreted.
Whether rank-and-file fighters
will see eye to eye on this cannot
presently be foreseen. But some
leaders of this religious militia
– one that thrived for decades on
foreign aid and extortion – have
become aware that economic rea-
sons demand change.
This is understandable. Those
accustomed to the comfort of Do-
ha’s luxury hotels, and of their
bungalows in Quetta and Pesha-
war, are unfit for returning to the
mountain villages from where
they fought against an invader. In-
stead, they now want the good life
the invader has invented. In time
they
, or maybe the generation that
succeedsthem,willsendtheirchil-
dren to regular schools instead of
Pakistani or Afghan madrasas.
For this to happen, the spigot
of international aid must be
turned on again. Still more ur-
gent: under Afghan soil lies a tril-
lion dollars ready to be scooped
up. But to extract these minerals,
technology and organisation
have to come from outside. Many
countries are eager, China and
Russia particularly
. This implies
complicated geopolitics and
much wheeling and dealing.
‘NAYA TALIBAN’
In this new game, Pakistan hopes
to play a big part. While the Chi-
nese are said to be capable of eat-
ing everything that moves, they
cannot stomach an unreformed
Taliban.Thiswouldcreatehellish
indigestion within Xinjiang. For-
mer Taliban allies, Saudi Arabia
andtheUnitedArabEmirates,are
wary of Taliban radicalism spill-
ing over and wrecking attempts to
liberalise their countries. Much
needs to be thrashed out.
That Pakistan may be accepted
as a mediator is possible because
the “Naya Taliban” – an
evocative term first used by
Dawn’s columnist Niaz Murtaza
– feel ideologically comfortable
with the leader of Naya Pakistan.
The commonality lies in shared
opposition to western dress, edu-
cation and language. Both place
a high value on symbols such as
shalwar-kameez and turban, and
both equate morality with the
regularity of prayers and fasting.
Indeed, unable to contain his joy
at the Taliban takeover of Kabul,
Pakistan PM Imran Khan de-
clared that Afghanistan had
“broken the shackles of slavery”.
In creating a new dispensa-
tion, the Naya Taliban will natu-
rally turn towards those who
made their ascent possible. But
here caution will kick in. Even if
pragmatism presently forces
them to deal with those they
know to be hypocritical, the Tali-
ban are not hypocrites them-
selves. They also know full well
who packed off their comrades to
Guantanamo Bay – from where
some are yet to return.
To quote from the back cover of
General Musharraf’s autobiogra-
phy, written in 2006 while still in
office: “We have captured 672 and
handed 369 to the United States.
Wehaveearnedbountiestotalling
millions of dollars.” Memories
cannot disappear easily although
the freshly victorious may not
dwelluponsuchbetrayalsfornow.
On the other hand, the Taliban
have fully trustable allies inside
Islamabad. When some days ago
the white Taliban flag flew – al-
beit briefly – from Jamia Hafsa,
this sent across an important
message from Maulana Abdul
Aziz and his likes to their victori-
ous Afghan colleagues: we were
with you when you were being
bombed in Tora Bora. And we are
with you now that you have won.
AFGHANISTAN
AND PAKISTAN
Like it or not, AfPak has
become reality
. Despised
in Pakistan because of
its American origin, this
term rings true. Geo-
graphical proximity is
now augmented by the
ideological proximity of
rulers in both countries.
Taliban style thinking
is bound to spread
through the length and
breadth of Pakistan.
Now that the Indians
have been chased out of Afghan-
istan, Pakistan’s dream of strate-
gic depth stands fulfilled. So has
the country reached nirvana?
Well, almost, but not quite.
Fears that the Naya Taliban
are no different from the Purana
Taliban has made millions of
Afghans desperate to flee. But
there is opposition to accepting
these refugees into Pakistan
even from those who might have
on their lips Iqbal’s couplet: bu-
tan-e-rang o khoon ko tor kar
millat mai gum ho ja; na toorani
rahay baqi na irani na afghani.
(Smash the idols of blood and
colour, become Muslim; be not
Turani nor Irani nor Afghani, be
just Muslim.)
Subcontinental pan-Islamism
– that which created Pakistan –
ends at the Durand Line for most
Pakistanis. But the Naya Taliban
could think differently. Afghan
nationalism has come into its
own. The cultural and ethnic con-
tinuity from ages past cannot be
eliminated by fencing. Indeed,
after booting out the mightiest
power of all times, why should
the Taliban consider as sacred
the arbitrary straight lines
drawn by a long dead, stuffy old
Englishman?
Pakistan must open its doors
for fleeing Afghans – to not do so
is immoral. Using its considera-
ble influence it must also im-
press upon Taliban victors that
the world will not accept their
old-style barbarity. This is not
the age when women should be
confined to their homes and
shoved into burqas, or where re-
ligious and ethnic minorities are
persecuted and killed. For this
message to get across, Pakistan
might first have to get its own
house in order.

New Delhi: Is Gautam
Adani, country’s second
richest businessman
and the one with the
strongest hold in the
current ruling estab-
lishment, caught in the
corporate war or has his
troubles increased due
to some other reason?
It is being discussed
that his ‘tension’ with
the country’s number
one industrialist has in-
creased and the new
corporate war has in-
creased his problems.
However, whatever be
the reason, the reality is
that the Adani Group is
in a bad shape. The com-
pany’s shares are falling
and the market capital
is continuously decreas-
ing. On top of this, SEBI
has stopped the IPO of
an Adani Group com-
pany through which an
amount of more than
Rs4,000 crores was to be
raised. It is reported
that SEBI has stopped
IPO of Adani Wilmar.
According to SEBI
rules, if any investiga-
tion is going on in any
branch of the company
that brought IPO, then it
is stopped. There is a
rule to keep it for 90
days.
As the investigation
of irregularities in for-
eign portfolio invest-
ment against Adani En-
terprises, the flagship
company of the Adani
Group, is going on, SEBI
has stopped the IPO of
Adani Wilmar.
Adani’s troubles,
however, are much larg-
er than anticipated. Na-
tional Security Deposi-
tory Limited has frozen
the accounts of three
foreign funds investing
heavily in the shares of
the Adani Group.
As a result, the shares
of Adani Group have
fallen by more than 50
per cent in the last three
months and the compa-
ny has suffered a loss of
Rs 43,000 crore in the
market capital. Due to
this, the wealth of Gau-
tam Adani has fallen
from $ 77 billion to close
to $ 55 billion.
Adani Group’s shares
were at a peak in June
this year. A share of
AdaniPower,whichwas
selling for `167, fell 55%
to `77.30 on August 18.
Adani Total Gas fell
37%, Adani Transmis-
sion 33%, Adani Green

New Delhi: Elections
are going to be held in
Uttarakhand next year
and it seems that the
ruling BJP is prepar-
ing to fight on issues
other than works done
by it in past five years.
After all, in a span of
four-and-a-half years,
the BJP has made three
chief ministers in the
state. Therefore, the
question of fighting
over the work of a
Chief Minister does
not arise. There will
definitely be publicity
for the work of the Cen-
tral government for
seven years, but in that
too the focus will be
only on the face of
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi.
Informed sources in
the BJP say that the
party will fight the
elections on a cultural
and religious agenda
and to further the reli-
gious agenda, the sup-
port of cultural work-
ers, especially singers,
will be taken.
Recently, famous
singer Anuradha Paud-
wal met party general
secretary Arun Singh
and media in-charge
Anil Baluni at the BJP
headquarters. Baluni
hails from Uttara-
khand. It is being told
that Paudwal ex-
pressed her desire to
do some social work in
Kedarnath Dham and
sought help from BJP.
Paudwal has sung
songs on Kedarnath
Dham and her working
there will promote
BJP’s agenda. Recently,
Chief Minister Push-
kar Singh Dhami ap-
pointed Pawandeep Ra-
jan, who won the song-
music reality show In-
dian Idol, as the cultur-
al brand ambassador of
the state.
On the day of the fi-
nale of Indian Idol, the
video of Chief Minister
Dhami was broadcast
several times, in which
he appealed to the peo-
ple to vote for
Pawandeep. The leader
of any other state had
not appealed for the vic-
tory of its contestant.
Obviously Dhami had
appealed according to
the election and the ef-
fect of his appeal was
that Pawandeep won.
After winning, he made
a programme to visit
Kedarnath Dham with
the six contestants who
reached the finals of In-
dian Idol. In this way,
through singers, the
BJP is carrying for-
ward the cultural and
religious agenda.

New Delhi: In most of
its ‘premier’ states, the
Congress is witnessing
a turmoil and now it
has witnessed one in
Kerala where senior
Congress leader AV
Gopinathan has re-
signed due to infight-
ing within the party.
Gopinathan’s resigna-
tion came about after a
controversy regarding
election of new presi-
dent of 14 districts.
Gopinathan, a senior
leader, is a former MLA
and party president of
Palakkad district of
Kerala. He left the Con-
gress saying that now
he does not have faith
in the top leadership,
and because of this
there is no justification
for continuing in the
party.
“I have been working
in Congress for the last
50 years, but now I have
lost all hope. Now there
is no question of con-
tinuing in Congress,”
he stressed.
According to re-
ports, the Congress
party had earlier not
given ticket to Gopina-
than in the Assembly
elections, due to which
he was reportedly an-
gry and now the party
did not even accept the
demands raised by his
supporters to appoint
Gopinathan as district
president.
However, after re-
signing from the Con-
gress party, there are
speculations of Gopi-
nathan going to anoth-
er party.
State’s ruling CPM
leader AK Balan has
said that the decision
is in Gopinathan’s
hands.
Since then there are
speculations that Gopi-
nathan may go towards
CPM. However, Gopi-
nathan has said that he
is not going to join any
other party as of now.

Lucknow: The race for
the upcoming assembly
elections in Uttar
Pradesh has started to
heat up with JDU an-
nouncing that if the
BJP doesn’t allocate
enough seats for the
party in the upcoming
assembly elections,
then it might contest in
200 seats of the state.
The resolution for the
same was passed during
the meeting of the Na-
tional Council of JDU.
National spokesperson
KC Tyagi said that the
first round of the talks
between JDU and BJP
has concluded and in
the next round of talks
it would be clear as to
how many seats each of
the parties will contest.
KC Tyagi though has
put caution in the wind
by saying that if BJP
does not allocate decent
number of seats, then
the JDU will contest
alone in 200 seats in the
state. Uttar Pradesh
state president Anoop
Singh Patel has also
made tall claims re-
garding the upcoming
assembly elections. He
said that if the BJP does
not allocate decent
number of seats
to JDU, then just
like it was the
case in 2012 elections
where BJP won a mea-
sly 47 seats in the as-
sembly elections.
Voting percentage
needs to be increased.
JDU’s state spokes-
person Abhishek Jha
said that during
the meeting of
the National
Council, a goal has
been set of elevating
the JDU to a national
party at the earliest. He
added that in order to
achieve the goal, JDU
will have to increase
the voting percentage
in the assembly elec-
tions of every state and
only then that JDU will
be included in the list of
national parties. He fur-
ther added that people
of Uttar Pradesh like
JDU and the image of

GONE YET NOT
FORGOTTEN
How well can we remember
someone’s life after they
die? A case in point in is the
death of former UP chief
minister Kalyan Singh. The only
time the maverick BJP
politician attracted so much
attention than he is now was at
the peak of the ‘Ayodhya
Movement’ when he
relinquished office as CM after
the demolition of the ‘Babri
Masjid’ and became a poster
boy of the BJP instantly. There
has been a virtual political
slugfest being fought on
various social media platforms
by Samajwadi Party, Congress
and the BJP on the former
CM’s legacy and the cast to
which he belonged. The ruling
party has been indulging in
counter-attacks on social media
against Akhilesh Yadav and
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who
were initially the more
aggressive ones to take on the
BJP on Twitter and Facebook.
But now the UP BJP seems to
have reworked its strategy and
launched counter attacks on
social media against its
opponents. It began with BJP
getting ten of its OBC leaders
to speak out against Akhilesh
Yadav and Priyanka Gandhi for
skipping paying last respects to
Kalyan Singh and the BJP
posted these videos on Twitter
and Facebook to corner Yadav.
The BJP feels there is anger
amongst Kalyan Singh’s Lodh
community over the matter.
The ruling party has also begun
a social media campaign in UP
saying ‘Farq Saaf Hai’(the
difference is clear) to compare
the achievements of Yogi
Adityanath’s government with
the pre-2017 situation in UP.

STALL VENDORS
AT MORADABAD
RAILWAY STATION
GO ON STRIKE
Vendors who set up stalls on
Platform No. 2 and 3 went on
strike at Moradabad railway
station on Thursday as they
alleged that Power Cabin Staff and
Station Master together divert
trains coming on their platform to
Platform No. 4 and 5. The striking
vendors have alleged that in lieu
of diverting trains from platform
number 2 and 3 to 4 and 5, the
station master and power cabin
staff charge Rs 1600 per train.
This amount is taken from the
stall contractors of platform
number 4 and 5. The striking
vendors have warned that if action
was not taken against the culprits
after conducting an inquiry, they
will commit suicide. Protesting
vendors include Ved Prakash
Mishra, Nasir, Amber, Brijesh
Saini, Chandramoli Mishra etc.
They said that this game is going
on due to the complicity of station
master and power cabin staff with
the vendors of platform number 4
and 5. It is alleged that there are
maximum stalls on 2 and 3 only.
Despite this, goods trains are
parked here whereas passenger
trains are diverted to platform 4
and 5. Protesting vendors said
that they had complained earlier
also, but no action was taken. In
the memorandum sent to Senior
Commercial Railway Manager,
they claimed that they had not
been able to recover even the fare
of the stalls for a long time and
were facing a situation of
starvation. Vendors have
threatened to commit suicide,
demanding a fair investigation
against the station master and the
power cabin staff. Gaurav Dixit,

Division, said that an application
has been given on behalf of the
vedors which would be

Motherly Love: Holy cow unites Ramdev,AIMIM, for nat’l animal status
First India Bureau
Lucknow: A day after
the Allahabad High
Court batted for the
cow to be declared as
the national animal,
Yoga guru Baba Ram-
dev has come out in
support of the idea.
Samajwadi Party MP
from Sambhal district
Dr Shafiqur Rahman,
Mulayam Singh’s
daughter-in-law and so-
cial worker Aparna Ya-
dav and AIMIM nation-
al spokesperson and
UP in-charge Asim
Waqar have also wel-
comed the decision of
the High Court.
The Allahabad HC
on Wednesday, while
denying bail to a per-
son accused of cow
slaughter in Uttar
Pradesh, asserted that
the cow should be de-
clared a national ani-
mal and their protec-
tion should be made a
fundamental right of
Hindus.
“The protection of
cows is not the respon-
sibility of only one re-
ligion. The cow is an
integral part of India’s
culture and should be
declared as the Nation-
al Animal,” the single-
judge bench of the Al-
lahabad HC had said.
Baba Ramdev, who
had pitched the same
idea in 2018, backed the
court order on Thurs-
day, saying it is time to
declare the cow as a na-
tional animal. Earlier
in 2018, Ramdev had
told a news agency: “If
tiger and peacock can
be the pride of the na-
tion, why can’t a cow be
one?”
Prior to this, in 2015,
the Patanjali co-found-
er had asked the Naren-
dra Modi government
to impose a nationwide
ban on cow slaughter.
He had also said that
killing cows is as hei-
nous a crime as killing
a human being.
On Wednesday, a sin-
gle-judge bench of Jus-
tice Shekhar Kumar
Yadav suggested that
the Centre should in-
troduce a bill in Parlia-
ment to declare the cow
as a national animal.
The High Court
also said that strict
laws should be
framed against
those who harm
cows
Cow is the
integral part
of our culture
 should be
declared as
the National
Animal.
—BABA RAMDEV, Yoga guru
Government can ban it, we
have no objection. There are
other animals for Muslims to
sacrifice. But mob lynching is
being done in the name of
cow, we are against it.
— DR SHAFIQUR RAHMAN,
SP MP
We have been demanding
from the beginning that for
the protection and safety of
the cow, a law should be
made at the level of the
central government.

IN HINDUTVA PUSH, PARTIES DITCH MUSLIMS
The oppn too has changed strategy; now they want Muslim votes but without the pro-Muslim tag
First India Bureau
Lucknow: The BJP has
built a huge vote bank
withitself ontheagenda
of Hindutva and nation-
alism. After Narendra
Modi became the Prime
Minister in 2014 and
2019, this agenda got
more edge.
The effect of this po-
litical strategy of BJP
was such that former
Congress President Ra-
hul Gandhi wearing a
janeuturnedShivBhakt,
Aam Aadmi Party’s su-
premo Arvind Kejriwal
claimed himself to be a
Hanuman devotee while
SPchief AkhileshYadav
started proving himself
to be a Krishna devotee.
During this, leaders of
almost every political
party have tried to
change the ‘image’ of
their party by adopting
soft Hindutva. The po-
litical parties which
wereseenopenlybatting
for Muslim vote bank on
the election pitch before
2014 have suddenly tak-
en a U turn.
With the coming of
Modi government at
Center due to political
compulsion, the opposi-
tion parties changed
their strategy and now
they want Muslim votes
butwithoutthepro-Mus-
lim tag. Indeed, the
emergence of BJP with
an agenda of national-
ism and Hindutva has
almost marginalized the
relevance of Muslim
vote bank. In this case,
West Bengal can be
left as an excep-
tion. But, to give a
political competi-
tion to BJP in al-
most every state, po-
litical parties want Mus-
lim vote bank, but are
shying away from mak-
ing open efforts for it. At
the same time, this
can be one of the
biggest reasons
for the growing
hold of Asaduddin
Owaisi’s party
amongMuslimvotersin
the last few years.
Excited by perfor-
mance in Bihar assem-
bly elections last year,
Owaisi is now trying to
increase his political
power in Uttar Pradesh.
Owaisi, in association
with Omprakash Rajb-
har’s Bhagidari Sankalp
Morcha, is exposing the
thinkingof politicalpar-
tiesaboutMuslimvoters
as vote banks. Owaisi’s
partyline is very clear,
hedoesnotwanttoallow
Muslims to become the
vote bank of any politi-
cal party and demands
participation in politics.
Owaisi’spartyAIMIM
isbeingaccusedof being
the ‘B’ team of BJP
. But,
he does not seem to be
making any fuss in his
effortstomakehimself a
national leader of Mus-
lims. On every issue like
RamMandir,Article370,
CAA, Love Jihad, Owai-
si talks about the Mus-
lim side in a frank man-
ner from Parliament to
the road. And, slowly he
is moving towards be-
comingthenewMessiah
of Muslims.

Lucknow: The
Bharatiya Janata Par-
ty in Uttar Pradesh has
started its prepara-
tions for the assembly
elections 2022. The
party has begun pre-
paring a report of the
MLAs after reviewing
their work in the state.
This report will cate-
gorize the work done
by MLA in the field
into three different
categories and carry
information about the
MLAs gathered from
government and pri-
vate agencies.
The BJP has this
time around decided to
conduct a survey on
every seat in UP and
will form booth com-
mittees in all the as-
sembly seats of the
state.
These booth commit-
tees will be responsi-
ble for the preparation
of the report about the
amount of work done
by the MLA in the last
5 years and based on
this report the party
decide whether to give
a ticket to an MLA or
not.
The BJP organiza-
tion will collect the de-
tails of all the MLAs in
the next two months
and once these details
are received it will be
scrutinized by party
leaders.
Once the assessment
is done, if the perfor-
mance of an MLA falls
under the average cat-
egory, then he will be
given a month to im-
prove upon his work in
the field by spending
more time among the
public and if anyone’s
performance is found
unsatisfactory then
he/ she will not be con-
sidered for a ticket
with the ticket being
given to another capa-
ble candidate.

Lucknow: Asserting
that the BJP will cross
the 300-mark in the Ut-
tar Pradesh Assembly
polls next year, Deputy
Chief Minister Keshav
Prasad Maurya on
Thursday said the elec-
tions will be decisive
and pave way for the
2024 Lok Sabha polls.
He said the elections
will be fought under the
leadership of CM Yogi
Adityanath and added
that the next CM will be
decided by the central
leadership and elected
MLAs.
Claiming that the
BJP would cross the
300-mark in 2022, Mau-
rya said, “I don’t see
any doubt in crossing
this figure.”
On the question of
leadership, Maurya
said “At present Yogi
Adityanath is the chief
minister. Right now we
are also believing and
everyone else is also be-
lieving that when the
results of 2022 will
come, Yogi ji will be the
CM.But this cannot be
said by me. This deci-
sion has to be taken by
the central leadership,
the Central Parliamen-
tary Board and central
observers.” Maurya
was the state President
of the BJP at the time
of the 2017 assembly
elections, and under his
leadership, the party
got 312 out of the 403
seats while 13 seats
were won by allies.
After the win, there
was speculation that
Maurya would be made
the CM but the central
leadership chose Adity-
anath.

ell us about your
journey so far.
Ans: My modelling
journey has not been
very easy, I’ve faced
hardships but I keep
my focus on myself
and how I can do better. I was
always an all-rounder and en-
joyed playing badminton. Cur-
rently, I’m pursuing psychology
and besides modelling, I strong-
ly wish to be a successful psy-
chologist one day. Since my
school days, I was fascinated
with the modelling and glamour
industry
.
Ques: What do you think
makes you stand out?
Ans: My willpower and my con-
fidence and the way I handle
things set me apart. The
amount of hard work I
pour into any-
thing is ir-
respec-
tive of the work allotted to me.
I have great respect for ‘dignity
of labour’ and I like to sign my
work with excellence. I feel the
three D’s are a must in life, ded-
ication, devotion and determi-
nation which would help soar
heights.
Ques: Who is your source of
inspiration?
Ans: My mother is my true
source of inspiration each day
.
My mom is the epitome of love,
sacrifice and strength. Besides
her, I strongly look up to Ur-
vashi Rautela in the field of
modelling and acting.
Ques: Did your family/par-
ents support you, if yes, how?
Ans: My family has been very
supportive of my work.
Ques: Why did you choose psy-
chology?
Ans: I believe that psychology
helps in understanding life bet-
ter and also we become more
accepting of the faults of oth-
ers. The depth of character that
studying psychology has given
me has helped me immensely in
not just the modelling field but
my day-to-day life.
Ques: Chahak, any message
you’d like to give?
Ans: My motivation Mantra
is ‘Never Give Up’. There
are no roses without
thorns so learn

jjain a.k.a Mahakal ki
Nagri is a historic city
situated on the banks of
the holy Shipra River.
Several pilgrimage sites
including Mahakalesh-
war, one of the twelve
Jyotirlingas and are located in
the city. The indigo-stained
house is a landmark to those
searching for traditional wood-
en comb makers in the area,
which earlier had a flourish of
such craftsmen. Hence, Ujjain
is swarmed with devotees and
tourists across the globe
throughout the year. However,
beyond being a significant Hin-
du pilgrimage destination, the
city is home to ancient crafts
and rich heritage that draw
travellers’ attention. Years ago,
the Kangi mohalla of Ujjain
was a residence of several
comb makers who crafted
wooden combs. The intricately
crafted teeth, organic material
and ergonomic design of these
combs resulted in improved
blood circulation, reduced hair
fall, dandruff/lice free scalp
and other remedial benefits.
But, as the plastic market
boomed, people switched to
mass-produced plastic combs.
These combs were available at
cheaper prices and fancy de-
signs. As a consequence, many
craftsmen relocated and opted
for alternative sources of in-
come. Today, there is only
Thedalal Banjara left, who is
continuously struggling to pre-
serve this craft and keeping
the ancient art of comb mak-
ing alive.
He carves beautiful pieces in
Sheesham wood to date with
his ageing hands. The crafts-
man derives inspiration from
nature and carves designs like
peacocks, fishes, lotus over
combs, making each piece
unique. Thedalal has received
many awards and was also ap-
preciated by many prominent
personalities like Sonia Gan-
dhi, Kamal Nath to name a few.
Additionally, Thedalal keeps
innovating and enhancing the
techniques, designs and quali-
ty of these handcrafted combs
at his workshop. Although he is
proud of his achievements, he
is extremely saddened by the
fact that nobody in his family
wants to continue the legacy.
Nevertheless, his contribu-
tions to the Indian crafts indus-
try is laudable. Since people are
moving towards sustainability,
switching back to wooden
combs would be a healthy and
eco-friendly option. So when in
Ujjain, do not forget to visit his
indigo blue workshop in Kangi
Mohalla, listening to his inter-
esting stories and shopping for
some pieces of art.
COMB MAKING
The intricate designs and re-
medial advantages of a wooden
comb were once used to be the
driving factors behind the pur-
chase. With the growing plastic
market, it has become hard to
find wooden combs that pro-
vide good sustenance to hair.
But Ujjain has kept the art of
wooden comb making alive!
The kangi mohalla in town
used to be the hub of comb
makers however today, there is
only Thedalal Banjara left who
is preserving this art by creat-
ing beautiful combs out of
sheesham wood. From duck
shape to peacock, he tries to
give each of his art pieces a dif-
ferent design. According to
him, the wooden comb has its
own importance. It improves
blood circulation and stops
hair fall. Not just this, one can
pour in some oil and enjoy a
head massage too. If you are
visiting Ujjain anytime soon,
do not forget to pay a visit to
Thedalal Banjara’s workshop
and do bring some pieces to gift
and keep as a souvenir.

PERSPECTIVE LUCKNOW | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2021 04 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia Promoted by First India News International Pvt. Ltd. fter capturing Kabul the Taliban want to be seen as rulers rather than just as a religious militia. Eager to secure legitimacy – in- ternationally and among Af- ghans – closed-door negotiations are afoot for a government inclu- sive of non-Taliban Afghans. Will these actually work out? And what lies ahead for young, urban- ised, internet-savvy Afghans seeking to live in the 21st century rather than the 7th? This choice had been denied just a while ago. UnderMullahOmar, theearlier phase (1996-2001) of Taliban rule had single-mindedly concentrat- ed upon rigorous enforcement of the Quranic injunction amr bil ma’roof wa nahi ‘anil munkar (promote that which is good and approved, and forbid that which is evil and disapproved). Imbibed from madrasas scattered across Pakistan, this was understood in the sense of a demand for strict religious policing. Liberal Islamic scholars, how- ever, say the injunction merely enjoins believers to seek piety through self-control. The Taliban under Mullah Omar disagreed emphatically with this inter- pretation. They carried out stoning of adulter- ers to death, amputation of limbs for theft, public floggings, closure of girls’ schools, extreme limits on the mobility of women and destruction of the 2,000-year- old Bamiyan Buddhas. Similar actions do not exist in the living memory of older Afghans. The new face suggests that amr bil ma’roof will henceforth be more liberally interpreted. Whether rank-and-file fighters will see eye to eye on this cannot presently be foreseen. But some leaders of this religious militia – one that thrived for decades on foreign aid and extortion – have become aware that economic rea- sons demand change. This is understandable. Those accustomed to the comfort of Do- ha’s luxury hotels, and of their bungalows in Quetta and Pesha- war, are unfit for returning to the mountain villages from where they fought against an invader. In- stead, they now want the good life the invader has invented. In time they , or maybe the generation that succeedsthem,willsendtheirchil- dren to regular schools instead of Pakistani or Afghan madrasas. For this to happen, the spigot of international aid must be turned on again. Still more ur- gent: under Afghan soil lies a tril- lion dollars ready to be scooped up. But to extract these minerals, technology and organisation have to come from outside. Many countries are eager, China and Russia particularly . This implies complicated geopolitics and much wheeling and dealing. ‘NAYA TALIBAN’ In this new game, Pakistan hopes to play a big part. While the Chi- nese are said to be capable of eat- ing everything that moves, they cannot stomach an unreformed Taliban.Thiswouldcreatehellish indigestion within Xinjiang. For- mer Taliban allies, Saudi Arabia andtheUnitedArabEmirates, are wary of Taliban radicalism spill- ing over and wrecking attempts to liberalise their countries. Much needs to be thrashed out. That Pakistan may be accepted as a mediator is possible because the “Naya Taliban” – an evocative term first used by Dawn’s columnist Niaz Murtaza – feel ideologically comfortable with the leader of Naya Pakistan. The commonality lies in shared opposition to western dress, edu- cation and language. Both place a high value on symbols such as shalwar-kameez and turban, and both equate morality with the regularity of prayers and fasting. Indeed, unable to contain his joy at the Taliban takeover of Kabul, Pakistan PM Imran Khan de- clared that Afghanistan had “broken the shackles of slavery”. In creating a new dispensa- tion, the Naya Taliban will natu- rally turn towards those who made their ascent possible. But here caution will kick in. Even if pragmatism presently forces them to deal with those they know to be hypocritical, the Tali- ban are not hypocrites them- selves. They also know full well who packed off their comrades to Guantanamo Bay – from where some are yet to return. To quote from the back cover of General Musharraf’s autobiogra- phy, written in 2006 while still in office: “We have captured 672 and handed 369 to the United States. Wehaveearnedbountiestotalling millions of dollars.” Memories cannot disappear easily although the freshly victorious may not dwelluponsuchbetrayalsfornow. On the other hand, the Taliban have fully trustable allies inside Islamabad. When some days ago the white Taliban flag flew – al- beit briefly – from Jamia Hafsa, this sent across an important message from Maulana Abdul Aziz and his likes to their victori- ous Afghan colleagues: we were with you when you were being bombed in Tora Bora. And we are with you now that you have won. AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN Like it or not, AfPak has become reality . Despised in Pakistan because of its American origin, this term rings true. Geo- graphical proximity is now augmented by the ideological proximity of rulers in both countries. Taliban style thinking is bound to spread through the length and breadth of Pakistan. Now that the Indians have been chased out of Afghan- istan, Pakistan’s dream of strate- gic depth stands fulfilled. So has the country reached nirvana? Well, almost, but not quite. Fears that the Naya Taliban are no different from the Purana Taliban has made millions of Afghans desperate to flee. But there is opposition to accepting these refugees into Pakistan even from those who might have on their lips Iqbal’s couplet: bu- tan-e-rang o khoon ko tor kar millat mai gum ho ja; na toorani rahay baqi na irani na afghani. (Smash the idols of blood and colour, become Muslim; be not Turani nor Irani nor Afghani, be just Muslim.) Subcontinental pan-Islamism – that which created Pakistan – ends at the Durand Line for most Pakistanis. But the Naya Taliban could think differently. Afghan nationalism has come into its own. The cultural and ethnic con- tinuity from ages past cannot be eliminated by fencing. Indeed, after booting out the mightiest power of all times, why should the Taliban consider as sacred the arbitrary straight lines drawn by a long dead, stuffy old Englishman? Pakistan must open its doors for fleeing Afghans – to not do so is immoral. Using its considera- ble influence it must also im- press upon Taliban victors that the world will not accept their old-style barbarity. This is not the age when women should be confined to their homes and shoved into burqas, or where re- ligious and ethnic minorities are persecuted and killed. For this message to get across, Pakistan might first have to get its own house in order. handed 369 to the United States. It is being discussed that his ‘tension’ with the country’s number one industrialist has in- creased and the new corporate war has in- creased his problems. However, whatever be the reason, the reality is that the Adani Group is in a bad shape. The com- pany’s shares are falling and the market capital is continuously decreas- ing. On top of this, SEBI has stopped the IPO of an Adani Group com- pany through which an amount of more than Rs4,000 crores was to be raised. It is reported that SEBI has stopped IPO of Adani Wilmar. According to SEBI rules, if any investiga- tion is going on in any branch of the company that brought IPO, then it is stopped. There is a rule to keep it for 90 days. As the investigation of irregularities in for- eign portfolio invest- ment against Adani En- terprises, the flagship company of the Adani Group, is going on, SEBI has stopped the IPO of Adani Wilmar. Adani’s troubles, however, are much larg- er than anticipated. Na- tional Security Deposi- tory Limited has frozen the accounts of three foreign funds investing heavily in the shares of the Adani Group. As a result, the shares of Adani Group have fallen by more than 50 per cent in the last three months and the compa- ny has suffered a loss of Rs 43,000 crore in the market capital. Due to this, the wealth of Gau- tam Adani has fallen from $ 77 billion to close to $ 55 billion. Adani Group’s shares were at a peak in June this year. A share of AdaniPower, whichwas selling for `167, fell 55% to `77.30 on August 18. Adani Total Gas fell 37%, Adani Transmis- sion 33%, Adani Green Energy 32% and Adani Port SEZ fell 21. ADANI’STROUBLESAREGARGANTUAN! Anita Hada New Delhi: Elections are going to be held in Uttarakhand next year and it seems that the ruling BJP is prepar- ing to fight on issues other than works done by it in past five years. After all, in a span of four-and-a-half years, the BJP has made three chief ministers in the state. Therefore, the question of fighting over the work of a Chief Minister does not arise. There will definitely be publicity for the work of the Cen- tral government for seven years, but in that too the focus will be only on the face of Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi. Informed sources in the BJP say that the party will fight the elections on a cultural and religious agenda and to further the reli- gious agenda, the sup- port of cultural work- ers, especially singers, will be taken. Recently, famous singer Anuradha Paud- wal met party general secretary Arun Singh and media in-charge Anil Baluni at the BJP headquarters. Baluni hails from Uttara- khand. It is being told that Paudwal ex- pressed her desire to do some social work in Kedarnath Dham and sought help from BJP. Paudwal has sung songs on Kedarnath Dham and her working there will promote BJP’s agenda. Recently, Chief Minister Push- kar Singh Dhami ap- pointed Pawandeep Ra- jan, who won the song- music reality show In- dian Idol, as the cultur- al brand ambassador of the state. On the day of the fi- nale of Indian Idol, the video of Chief Minister Dhami was broadcast several times, in which he appealed to the peo- ple to vote for Pawandeep. The leader of any other state had not appealed for the vic- tory of its contestant. Obviously Dhami had appealed according to the election and the ef- fect of his appeal was that Pawandeep won. After winning, he made a programme to visit Kedarnath Dham with the six contestants who reached the finals of In- dian Idol. In this way, through singers, the BJP is carrying for- ward the cultural and religious agenda. Syed Umer New Delhi: In most of its ‘premier’ states, the Congress is witnessing a turmoil and now it has witnessed one in Kerala where senior Congress leader AV Gopinathan has re- signed due to infight- ing within the party. Gopinathan’s resigna- tion came about after a controversy regarding election of new presi- dent of 14 districts. Gopinathan, a senior leader, is a former MLA and party president of Palakkad district of Kerala. He left the Con- gress saying that now he does not have faith in the top leadership, and because of this there is no justification for continuing in the party. “I have been working in Congress for the last 50 years, but now I have lost all hope. Now there is no question of con- tinuing in Congress,” he stressed. According to re- ports, the Congress party had earlier not given ticket to Gopina- than in the Assembly elections, due to which he was reportedly an- gry and now the party did not even accept the demands raised by his supporters to appoint Gopinathan as district president. However, after re- signing from the Con- gress party, there are speculations of Gopi- nathan going to anoth- er party. State’s ruling CPM leader AK Balan has said that the decision is in Gopinathan’s hands. Since then there are speculations that Gopi- nathan may go towards CPM. However, Gopi- nathan has said that he is not going to join any other party as of now. BJP’s ‘mission election’ depends on singers in Uttarakhand! First India Bureau Lucknow: The race for the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh has started to heat up with JDU an- nouncing that if the BJP doesn’t allocate enough seats for the party in the upcoming assembly elections, then it might contest in 200 seats of the state. The resolution for the same was passed during the meeting of the Na- tional Council of JDU. National spokesperson KC Tyagi said that the first round of the talks between JDU and BJP has concluded and in the next round of talks it would be clear as to how many seats each of the parties will contest. KC Tyagi though has put caution in the wind by saying that if BJP does not allocate decent number of seats, then the JDU will contest alone in 200 seats in the state. Uttar Pradesh state president Anoop Singh Patel has also made tall claims re- garding the upcoming assembly elections. He said that if the BJP does not allocate decent number of seats to JDU, then just like it was the case in 2012 elections where BJP won a mea- sly 47 seats in the as- sembly elections. Voting percentage needs to be increased. JDU’s state spokes- person Abhishek Jha said that during the meeting of the National Council, a goal has been set of elevating the JDU to a national party at the earliest. He added that in order to achieve the goal, JDU will have to increase the voting percentage in the assembly elec- tions of every state and only then that JDU will be included in the list of national parties. He fur- ther added that people of Uttar Pradesh like JDU and the image of CM Nitish Kumar is that of Vikas Purush. The enthusiasm of JDU toward the Uttar Pradesh elections draw jibes from RJD with RJD’s state spokesper- son Mrityunjay Tiwari taunting RJD for being the no. 3 party in party . The only time the maverick BJP politician attracted so much attention than he is now was at the peak of the ‘Ayodhya Movement’ when he relinquished office as CM after the demolition of the ‘Babri Masjid’ and became a poster boy of the BJP instantly. There has been a virtual political slugfest being fought on various social media platforms by Samajwadi Party, Congress and the BJP on the former CM’s legacy and the cast to which he belonged. The ruling party has been indulging in counter-attacks on social media against Akhilesh Yadav and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who were initially the more aggressive ones to take on the BJP on Twitter and Facebook. But now the UP BJP seems to have reworked its strategy and launched counter attacks on social media against its opponents. It began with BJP getting ten of its OBC leaders to speak out against Akhilesh Yadav and Priyanka Gandhi for skipping paying last respects to Kalyan Singh and the BJP posted these videos on Twitter and Facebook to corner Yadav. The BJP feels there is anger amongst Kalyan Singh’s Lodh community over the matter. Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal district Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Mulayam Singh’s daughter-in-law and so- cial worker Aparna Ya- dav and AIMIM nation- al spokesperson and UP in-charge Asim Waqar have also wel- comed the decision of the High Court. The Allahabad HC on Wednesday, while denying bail to a per- son accused of cow slaughter in Uttar Pradesh, asserted that the cow should be de- clared a national ani- mal and their protec- tion should be made a fundamental right of Hindus. “The protection of cows is not the respon- sibility of only one re- ligion. The cow is an integral part of India’s culture and should be declared as the Nation- al Animal,” the single- judge bench of the Al- lahabad HC had said. Baba Ramdev, who had pitched the same idea in 2018, backed the court order on Thurs- day, saying it is time to declare the cow as a na- tional animal. Earlier in 2018, Ramdev had told a news agency: “If tiger and peacock can be the pride of the na- tion, why can’t a cow be one?” Prior to this, in 2015, the Patanjali co-found- er had asked the Naren- dra Modi government to impose a nationwide ban on cow slaughter. He had also said that killing cows is as hei- nous a crime as killing a human being. On Wednesday, a sin- gle-judge bench of Jus- tice Shekhar Kumar Yadav suggested that the Centre should in- troduce a bill in Parlia- ment to declare the cow as a national animal. The High Court also said that strict laws should be framed against those who harm cows Cow is the integral part of our culture should be declared as the National Animal. —BABA RAMDEV, Yoga guru Government can ban it, we have no objection. After Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister in 2014 and 2019, this agenda got more edge. The effect of this po- litical strategy of BJP was such that former Congress President Ra- hul Gandhi wearing a janeuturnedShivBhakt, Aam Aadmi Party’s su- premo Arvind Kejriwal claimed himself to be a Hanuman devotee while SPchief AkhileshYadav started proving himself to be a Krishna devotee. During this, leaders of almost every political party have tried to change the ‘image’ of their party by adopting soft Hindutva. The po- litical parties which wereseenopenlybatting for Muslim vote bank on the election pitch before 2014 have suddenly tak- en a U turn. With the coming of Modi government at Center due to political compulsion, the opposi- tion parties changed their strategy and now they want Muslim votes butwithoutthepro-Mus- lim tag. Indeed, the emergence of BJP with an agenda of national- ism and Hindutva has almost marginalized the relevance of Muslim vote bank. In this case, West Bengal can be left as an excep- tion. But, to give a political competi- tion to BJP in al- most every state, po- litical parties want Mus- lim vote bank, but are shying away from mak- ing open efforts for it. At the same time, this can be one of the biggest reasons for the growing hold of Asaduddin Owaisi’s party amongMuslimvotersin the last few years. Excited by perfor- mance in Bihar assem- bly elections last year, Owaisi is now trying to increase his political power in Uttar Pradesh. Owaisi, in association with Omprakash Rajb- har’s Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha, is exposing the thinkingof politicalpar- tiesaboutMuslimvoters as vote banks. Owaisi’s partyline is very clear, hedoesnotwanttoallow Muslims to become the vote bank of any politi- cal party and demands participation in politics. Owaisi’spartyAIMIM isbeingaccusedof being the ‘B’ team of BJP . But, he does not seem to be making any fuss in his effortstomakehimself a national leader of Mus- lims. And, slowly he is moving towards be- comingthenewMessiah of Muslims. First India bureau Lucknow: The Bharatiya Janata Par- ty in Uttar Pradesh has started its prepara- tions for the assembly elections 2022. The party has begun pre- paring a report of the MLAs after reviewing their work in the state. This report will cate- gorize the work done by MLA in the field into three different categories and carry information about the MLAs gathered from government and pri- vate agencies. The BJP has this time around decided to conduct a survey on every seat in UP and will form booth com- mittees in all the as- sembly seats of the state. These booth commit- tees will be responsi- ble for the preparation of the report about the amount of work done by the MLA in the last 5 years and based on this report the party decide whether to give a ticket to an MLA or not. The BJP organiza- tion will collect the de- tails of all the MLAs in the next two months and once these details are received it will be scrutinized by party leaders. Once the assessment is done, if the perfor- mance of an MLA falls under the average cat- egory, then he will be given a month to im- prove upon his work in the field by spending more time among the public and if anyone’s performance is found unsatisfactory then he/ she will not be con- sidered for a ticket with the ticket being given to another capa- ble candidate. First India Bureau Lucknow: Asserting that the BJP will cross the 300-mark in the Ut- tar Pradesh Assembly polls next year, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Thursday said the elec- tions will be decisive and pave way for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. He said the elections will be fought under the leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath and added that the next CM will be decided by the central leadership and elected MLAs. Claiming that the BJP would cross the 300-mark in 2022, Mau- rya said, “I don’t see any doubt in crossing this figure.” On the question of leadership, Maurya said “At present Yogi Adityanath is the chief minister. Right now we are also believing and everyone else is also be- lieving that when the results of 2022 will come, Yogi ji will be the CM.But this cannot be said by me. This deci- sion has to be taken by the central leadership, the Central Parliamen- tary Board and central observers.” Maurya was the state President of the BJP at the time of the 2017 assembly elections, and under his leadership, the party got 312 out of the 403 seats while 13 seats were won by allies. Several pilgrimage sites including Mahakalesh- war, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and are located in the city. The indigo-stained house is a landmark to those searching for traditional wood- en comb makers in the area, which earlier had a flourish of such craftsmen. Hence, Ujjain is swarmed with devotees and tourists across the globe throughout the year. However, beyond being a significant Hin- du pilgrimage destination, the city is home to ancient crafts and rich heritage that draw travellers’ attention. Years ago, the Kangi mohalla of Ujjain was a residence of several comb makers who crafted wooden combs. The intricately crafted teeth, organic material and ergonomic design of these combs resulted in improved blood circulation, reduced hair fall, dandruff/lice free scalp and other remedial benefits. But, as the plastic market boomed, people switched to mass-produced plastic combs. These combs were available at cheaper prices and fancy de- signs. As a consequence, many craftsmen relocated and opted for alternative sources of in- come. Today, there is only Thedalal Banjara left, who is continuously struggling to pre- serve this craft and keeping the ancient art of comb mak- ing alive. He carves beautiful pieces in Sheesham wood to date with his ageing hands. The crafts- man derives inspiration from nature and carves designs like peacocks, fishes, lotus over combs, making each piece unique. Thedalal has received many awards and was also ap- preciated by many prominent personalities like Sonia Gan- dhi, Kamal Nath to name a few. Additionally, Thedalal keeps innovating and enhancing the techniques, designs and quali- ty of these handcrafted combs at his workshop. Although he is proud of his achievements, he is extremely saddened by the fact that nobody in his family wants to continue the legacy. Nevertheless, his contribu- tions to the Indian crafts indus- try is laudable. Since people are moving towards sustainability, switching back to wooden combs would be a healthy and eco-friendly option. So when in Ujjain, do not forget to visit his indigo blue workshop in Kangi Mohalla, listening to his inter- esting stories and shopping for some pieces of art. COMB MAKING The intricate designs and re- medial advantages of a wooden comb were once used to be the driving factors behind the pur- chase. With the growing plastic market, it has become hard to find wooden combs that pro- vide good sustenance to hair. But Ujjain has kept the art of wooden comb making alive! The kangi mohalla in town used to be the hub of comb makers however today, there is only Thedalal Banjara left who is preserving this art by creat- ing beautiful combs out of sheesham wood. From duck shape to peacock, he tries to give each of his art pieces a dif- ferent design. According to him, the wooden comb has its own importance. It improves blood circulation and stops hair fall. Not just this, one can pour in some oil and enjoy a head massage too. If you are visiting Ujjain anytime soon, do not forget to pay a visit to Thedalal Banjara’s workshop and do bring some pieces to gift and keep as a souvenir.
