This presentation talks about the definition of what design is. It also touches on the basics of design thinking. It showcases different types of design and concludes with how you can become and designer and what you would need to study design.
2. Is design is just to make things look pretty?
Its one aspect of it.
Definition of design is: a decorative pattern.
3. When you think of design, what are your first thoughts?
Do you think of a billboard or a logo?
4. How about the chair you are sitting on?
Were these chairs designed just to look pretty?
Or were they designed to be functional and comfortable as well?
5. What do you think is the primary purpose of this “chair”?
7. Consider an office chair.
It needs to be customizable because
people are all different. It needs to
accommodate many different body
shapes and sizes. People also spend
the majority of their day in these chairs,
so comfort is important.
Besides for the obvious purpose an office chair
can showcase power or position as well as
allowing for mobility.
20. “Socrates said, “Know thyself.”
I say, “Know thy users.”
And guess what?
They don’t think like you do.”
Joshua Brewer
Design thinking is about noticing how people interact with
object and designs. Noticing details. Noting the emotions that
accompany the interaction and wanting to improve things.
22. Careers in design:
Advertising – print and digital
Branding
Packaging
Print
Photography
Film + animation
Digital
Web – UI + UX + CX
Interaction design
Product design
42. Draw a tree
This is an example of design thinking. Everyone will draw a different type or view of a tree. This is because our
experiences and background influence our thinking. All the different drawings are not wrong. Similarly there may
be many solutions to a thing, but it doesn’t make it wrong.
43. “It’s through mistakes that you actually can grow.
You have to get bad in order to get good.”
Paula Scher
Practice makes perfect. Design is a lot of hard work and long
hours. But nothing beats seeing your design on a t-shirt or
billboard or being used by a user on their phone.

Design thinking. Our experiences and background influence our thinking. All the drawing are different and no are wrong. There many be many solutions to a thing, but it doesn’t make it wrong. Story of the Heathrow airport – high ceilings – broken light blubs. Scaffolding too expensive. Creative team to brainstorm a solution – bring in the circus – tight rope walkers to fix the lights.
Sixty per cent of the 120,000 light bulbs at Terminal Five have blown yet not a single one has been changed since 2008, faced with “no viable way to replace them”, according to O’Brien.
Various ways of replacing them have been investigated, including gondolas and high-level cherry pickers, none of which were deemed “practical or safe”.
