Unit 8 - Task 4
Daniel and Adam
High Definition {HD} - Daniel
The use of High Definition has progressed a lot over the past few years, with us progressing all the
way from the least definitive version of 144p {pixels}, all the way to being able to watch a
television in 4K resolution. High Definition is essentially the progression of the amount of pixels
that are able to be viewed on a screen at one time, and the more pixels that are on a screen at one
time, the higher definition the thing that you are watching will be. HDTV products started to come
into fashion in the 1980’s, and started to become available to the main public in the 1990’s, while
the first 4K television came out as near as 2014.The advantages of watching Higher Definition
videos are that it helps you see the image clearer, and allows you to see more than you usually
would. The only real disadvantage of using HD isn’t entirely a problem with HD itself, but more with
either the software or current technology the user may be using, such as an older/slower computer
that wouldn’t exactly be able to handle HD’s amount of pixels.
High Definition {HD} - Daniel
High Definition is the amount of LED lights that are shown on a television or a screen at one time.
If you have a 1080p Television, then that means that the television has 1,920 pixels going down
one side, and 1,080 pixels going down the other. It never used to be as advanced as it currently is.
Before the 1990’s, films used to be filmed using actual film reels with something holding them up
while the cameramen moved them around, and when done filming, would take out the current film
reel being used and then edit the film. This isn’t exactly an ancient method, as people do still use
it, but the first film that was digitally recorded and edited and seemed to pave the way for it to be
done in the future was Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace. This was all filmed using a
digital camera and was then edited using an editing software, and the camera that many beginners
and more start to use when using a digital camera is an essential 35mm Camera.
High Definition {HD} - Daniel
High Definition is also used for many services other than Television broadcasting or for the use of
a picture coming off of a monitor. HD is also used in streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon
Prime, and much more to allow the viewer to see a clearer image than what they would normally
see. Companies tend to use a higher definition as a great selling point for their product, as the
higher the definition, the better the viewing for the public and audience that they’re watching. New
services have also been made available through the creation of High Definition, such as Blu-Ray
DVD’s, which are made to give the viewer a better experience and are better than normal DVD’s
that you could buy. Companies and film producers tend to use High Definition for these reasons,
and the higher the definition, the better the product. As High Definition has no real down-side when
it comes to making movies for the public, it’s mainly used all over the film industry to the highest
degree that it can at the time, but the director and continuity manager must make sure (if the film is
being filmed on a higher quality camera, such as an IMAX Camera or an 8K camera) that
everything is precise and done correctly, otherwise, people may notice little differences or
mistakes much more easily than they normally would.
3-Dimensional Videos {3D} - Daniel
3D is considered to be a fairly recent thing to be made, but the use of 3D can be
found to go all the way back to the 1950’s. 3D is the use of taking a two-
dimensional picture or moving pictures, and making them three-dimensional,
therefore, allowing the audience to be able to see what they are looking at right in
front of them, giving the audience a feeling of what they’re watching to be more
realistic than what it actually is. In 1952, there was the creation of the first
feature-length 3D movie, which was named Bwana Devil, which was about two
man-eating lions that had escaped, and was released in the USA. The evolution
of 3D has become quite impressive, with films such as Avatar being hailed as
incredible due to its impressive use of 3D within its production, and is said to
have revolutionised 3D to become better within itself, as not including home DVD
sales, Avatar made over $2.7 billion throughout its release.
3-Dimensional Videos {3D} - Daniel
3D has progressed all the way from small pictures of the Queen at Exhibitions all the way to
being in our very own living rooms in our homes. 3D Television has a small stint of becoming
very popular with people, but then the sales started to decline a few years after it was made,
with most complaints being that people either didn’t feel the need to watch television in 3D,
or people got irritated with wearing the glasses to watch television, especially if they already
wore glasses. However, the world's first dedicated 3D Television Channel was made in
2010, with South Korea’s SKY 3D launching, where all the shows shown on the channels
were also created in 3D to cater to the audience. Advertisements for certain products also
used 3D to attempt to help advertise their item, such as Starbucks using it in 2013. This
gives the audience the illusion of the item being more realistic, and may want the audience
want the item more if it’s right in front of them, as it creates the illusion of being there.
3-Dimensional Videos {3D} - Daniel
3D has become used quite frequently since the creation of the blockbuster movie Avatar, with the
list of successful, highest grossing 3D productions being recent as well as a few years ago, with
films like The Avengers {2012} and Toy Story 3 {2010} making a lot of money off of using 3D
within their movies, while movies as recent as 2015 {Jurassic World} also making a lot of money.
However, the advantages for the use of 3D is quite small compared to the advantages of it for the
makers of the movie. While it is interesting for the audience to see things in 3D, and does make
the atmosphere more interesting, it can be uncomfortable for the audience to wear 3D Glasses,
and it’s made mainly for the people creating the movie to make more money, as while it does take
more money to create, it costs more money to buy a 3D ticket, and also may have a health risk for
the viewer as it could make the nauseous, or could strain their eyes.
Disadvantages and advantages of the internet- Adam
The advantages of the internet is that it can allow people to uploaded videos so that it
can be viewed by other people as it allows people to distribute recordings online.
Also, the internet allows people to stream online movies or programmes that they
want to watch and people are more likely to use their portable devices to use
streaming instead of using the television to watch the movie or programme.
Additionally, there are a lot of websites that have a lot of exclusive content which they
try to fight back the piracy as people are willing to invest in legitimate companies.
Furthermore, most TV companies have their own iplayer where sometimes the
content is for free and people can buy the film or TV programme which they can keep
forever on their devices. On the other hand, there are quite a few cons of the internet
such as, there are illegal streaming because of films movies or TV programme being
released before they are actually released to the public which leads to piracy
occurring. Another con is that people who watch on ‘showbox’, the film institution
does not get enough money as they should because the audience is not paying for
the services.
Digital Video-Adam
Digital video is a representation of moving audio/visual recordings that is encoded
data. In contrast to digital video, editors and producers would have used analogue
video in the past. Analogue video was used in the 1950s where the scenes would
have been recorded on film rails by physical media but now many films and
programmes are recorded digitally because of the update and modern equipments
that have been developed. In May 1999, the first film - Star Wars was the first film
to have been recorded digitally. The digital footage was combined seamlessly with
the help of an updated camera which then the scenes were edited on the
computer. Many movies and TV programmes are filmed by a digital video camera
as it makes the images clearer for the audience to see and it will be much easier
when editing the scenes as the recordings are in digital form and then when the
editor edits on the computer, the software will be the same - digital and will be able
to edit and make the film or programme faster because of the way editing and
filming has become more modern ands less physical and more software based.
Also, when the editor edits the scenes, there will be storage for them to store the
recordings and not have to keep buying rails and the digital camera comes with
equipments that can be connected to the computer and uploaded the scenes
quicker and be more efficient.
Disadvantages and advantages of Digital video- Adam
The first advantage of using a digital video is that the distribution will be easier
when the person who recorded the video uploads the recording onto another
device and save it to have other copies. The second advantage is that the image
quality of the recording from the video will be crisp, clean and be able to see the
small details on the images. Another advantage of using a digital video is that in
the long run the digital video camera will be more affordable as you would have
already bought the camera but just need to buy some memory cards to have
more storage, rather than buying an analogue camera where you would have to
keep on buying the rails. However, there are some cons of using a digital video
such as, there may be a virus and this could cause the recordings to delete or
block the person from downloading or uploading the recordings. Another
disadvantage of using digital video is that when a person has uploaded a
recording, it can be leaked on to the internet and then other people will be able to
view the video. Also, the recordings may be lost if the computer shuts down or is
not saved properly onto the device.
On Demand- Adam
On-demand allows people to watch programmes or movies what they like, whenever they like or wherever
they like. It gives people the freedom to watch the video whenever they can instead of having to wait for a
specific time to watch the video they want to as they can record live TV programmes and then watch it
later when they have time and have a range of content to choose from.
UK broadcasters make their programmes available online such as, BBC Iplayer, ITV player, Demand 5
and Catch Up on Channel Most of these services allow people to watch the programmes that they may
have missed for free or just need to sign up and have an account that will allow them to watch the
programmes whenever they want.People can watch on-demand on their smart TV, laptops/computer,
mobile phone or on game consoles. But any of these devices must be connected to the internet because
the service requires an internet connection because it will allow people to stream the programmes or then
they will have to download the programme if there are no connections to the internet.
There are online service on-demand such as the ones listed above, but there are allows on-demand
programmes that come with a ‘set top box’ which people can receive from their internet company. For
example, Sky is a wide company that provides people with internet, TV services and on-demand services.
If you have Sky, you can buy a ‘bundle’ which will give you a ‘set top box’ that you can connect to your TV
and then this will allow people at home to watch any movies or programmes they want and at anytime
they want. However, the bundle comes in different sizes so some people may have a small bundle and
therefore they may not be able to watch some of the programmes or movies they want because they
haven't paid for a different bundle.
On demand - Adam
On Demand An individual can also access movies on demand depending on their Sky
or Virgin package. For example, a Sky customer would need to purchase the Sky
Cinema package in order to watch movies on demand. For example, they would be
able to watch Deadpool.
However, if they do have Sky Cinema this means that they can find any movie by
genre, download it and watch it. Again, they do not have to go to the cinema scheduled
listings, and watch a movie halfway through. They can download the movie and watch it
from the beginning. The Sky Store is also available, where people can purchase a new
movie and then watch it from their TV.
For instance, Logan. They can also decide whether they would like to buy and keep the
movie, and then they are sent the DVD, the movie also remains on their recordings, for
the viewer to watch when they want.
Disadvantages and advantages of On demand- Adam
The advantages of on-demand is that it gives people a variety of content to choose from
which they can choose what film or programme they want to watch at any time or wherever
they are. People can watch programmes or films on-demand at any time instead of waiting
for the time when the film or programme will be shown on television if they do not make the
time to watch it.
One disadvantage of using on-demand is that it requires the person to make sure that they
have the correct subscription box so they can watch the programmes they want because
there are different sizes of the subscription boxes and this can have a limit on what the
person wants to watch.
Another disadvantage is that some Iplayers such as BBC Iplayer deletes some
programmes after a certain amount of time. This will not be good for the audience as they
may not be able to see the programme that they want to watch but they may not be able to
watch it because the programme has been taken down thus not letting people watch the
programme. Eastenders is a programme that can be watched on BBC Iplayer but the
programme will only last for 30 days as they need to keep uploading new episode and
therefore they will not be enough space to keep all the episodes.
The Internet
The internet is a global network of computers which provide information and
communication facilities for anyone to use. The internet is a very popular tool
that everyone uses in their everyday lives. People can talk to other people
through social media, shop online, play games, do work and watch
programmes and films on websites. The internet has a variety of legitimate
websites where people can stream programmes or movies that they want to
see or can get access to movies or programmes that have not been released
yet to the public through illegitimate websites such as, 123movies.com,
watchmovies.com and gomovies.com In today's society, more and more
people are using the internet because it can allow them to watch videos and
communicate with other people as well. Because portable devices requires
internet connection, most of the population will have portable devices and
would rather spend more time on watching the programme or film on their
laptop or phone than watching it on their television. The internet also allows
people to distribute recordings online and allow people to get access to the
recordings by a person that may be in a different location.

Unit 8 - Task 4

  • 1. Unit 8 - Task 4 Daniel and Adam
  • 2. High Definition {HD} - Daniel The use of High Definition has progressed a lot over the past few years, with us progressing all the way from the least definitive version of 144p {pixels}, all the way to being able to watch a television in 4K resolution. High Definition is essentially the progression of the amount of pixels that are able to be viewed on a screen at one time, and the more pixels that are on a screen at one time, the higher definition the thing that you are watching will be. HDTV products started to come into fashion in the 1980’s, and started to become available to the main public in the 1990’s, while the first 4K television came out as near as 2014.The advantages of watching Higher Definition videos are that it helps you see the image clearer, and allows you to see more than you usually would. The only real disadvantage of using HD isn’t entirely a problem with HD itself, but more with either the software or current technology the user may be using, such as an older/slower computer that wouldn’t exactly be able to handle HD’s amount of pixels.
  • 3. High Definition {HD} - Daniel High Definition is the amount of LED lights that are shown on a television or a screen at one time. If you have a 1080p Television, then that means that the television has 1,920 pixels going down one side, and 1,080 pixels going down the other. It never used to be as advanced as it currently is. Before the 1990’s, films used to be filmed using actual film reels with something holding them up while the cameramen moved them around, and when done filming, would take out the current film reel being used and then edit the film. This isn’t exactly an ancient method, as people do still use it, but the first film that was digitally recorded and edited and seemed to pave the way for it to be done in the future was Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace. This was all filmed using a digital camera and was then edited using an editing software, and the camera that many beginners and more start to use when using a digital camera is an essential 35mm Camera.
  • 4. High Definition {HD} - Daniel High Definition is also used for many services other than Television broadcasting or for the use of a picture coming off of a monitor. HD is also used in streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and much more to allow the viewer to see a clearer image than what they would normally see. Companies tend to use a higher definition as a great selling point for their product, as the higher the definition, the better the viewing for the public and audience that they’re watching. New services have also been made available through the creation of High Definition, such as Blu-Ray DVD’s, which are made to give the viewer a better experience and are better than normal DVD’s that you could buy. Companies and film producers tend to use High Definition for these reasons, and the higher the definition, the better the product. As High Definition has no real down-side when it comes to making movies for the public, it’s mainly used all over the film industry to the highest degree that it can at the time, but the director and continuity manager must make sure (if the film is being filmed on a higher quality camera, such as an IMAX Camera or an 8K camera) that everything is precise and done correctly, otherwise, people may notice little differences or mistakes much more easily than they normally would.
  • 5. 3-Dimensional Videos {3D} - Daniel 3D is considered to be a fairly recent thing to be made, but the use of 3D can be found to go all the way back to the 1950’s. 3D is the use of taking a two- dimensional picture or moving pictures, and making them three-dimensional, therefore, allowing the audience to be able to see what they are looking at right in front of them, giving the audience a feeling of what they’re watching to be more realistic than what it actually is. In 1952, there was the creation of the first feature-length 3D movie, which was named Bwana Devil, which was about two man-eating lions that had escaped, and was released in the USA. The evolution of 3D has become quite impressive, with films such as Avatar being hailed as incredible due to its impressive use of 3D within its production, and is said to have revolutionised 3D to become better within itself, as not including home DVD sales, Avatar made over $2.7 billion throughout its release.
  • 6. 3-Dimensional Videos {3D} - Daniel 3D has progressed all the way from small pictures of the Queen at Exhibitions all the way to being in our very own living rooms in our homes. 3D Television has a small stint of becoming very popular with people, but then the sales started to decline a few years after it was made, with most complaints being that people either didn’t feel the need to watch television in 3D, or people got irritated with wearing the glasses to watch television, especially if they already wore glasses. However, the world's first dedicated 3D Television Channel was made in 2010, with South Korea’s SKY 3D launching, where all the shows shown on the channels were also created in 3D to cater to the audience. Advertisements for certain products also used 3D to attempt to help advertise their item, such as Starbucks using it in 2013. This gives the audience the illusion of the item being more realistic, and may want the audience want the item more if it’s right in front of them, as it creates the illusion of being there.
  • 7. 3-Dimensional Videos {3D} - Daniel 3D has become used quite frequently since the creation of the blockbuster movie Avatar, with the list of successful, highest grossing 3D productions being recent as well as a few years ago, with films like The Avengers {2012} and Toy Story 3 {2010} making a lot of money off of using 3D within their movies, while movies as recent as 2015 {Jurassic World} also making a lot of money. However, the advantages for the use of 3D is quite small compared to the advantages of it for the makers of the movie. While it is interesting for the audience to see things in 3D, and does make the atmosphere more interesting, it can be uncomfortable for the audience to wear 3D Glasses, and it’s made mainly for the people creating the movie to make more money, as while it does take more money to create, it costs more money to buy a 3D ticket, and also may have a health risk for the viewer as it could make the nauseous, or could strain their eyes.
  • 8. Disadvantages and advantages of the internet- Adam The advantages of the internet is that it can allow people to uploaded videos so that it can be viewed by other people as it allows people to distribute recordings online. Also, the internet allows people to stream online movies or programmes that they want to watch and people are more likely to use their portable devices to use streaming instead of using the television to watch the movie or programme. Additionally, there are a lot of websites that have a lot of exclusive content which they try to fight back the piracy as people are willing to invest in legitimate companies. Furthermore, most TV companies have their own iplayer where sometimes the content is for free and people can buy the film or TV programme which they can keep forever on their devices. On the other hand, there are quite a few cons of the internet such as, there are illegal streaming because of films movies or TV programme being released before they are actually released to the public which leads to piracy occurring. Another con is that people who watch on ‘showbox’, the film institution does not get enough money as they should because the audience is not paying for the services.
  • 9. Digital Video-Adam Digital video is a representation of moving audio/visual recordings that is encoded data. In contrast to digital video, editors and producers would have used analogue video in the past. Analogue video was used in the 1950s where the scenes would have been recorded on film rails by physical media but now many films and programmes are recorded digitally because of the update and modern equipments that have been developed. In May 1999, the first film - Star Wars was the first film to have been recorded digitally. The digital footage was combined seamlessly with the help of an updated camera which then the scenes were edited on the computer. Many movies and TV programmes are filmed by a digital video camera as it makes the images clearer for the audience to see and it will be much easier when editing the scenes as the recordings are in digital form and then when the editor edits on the computer, the software will be the same - digital and will be able to edit and make the film or programme faster because of the way editing and filming has become more modern ands less physical and more software based. Also, when the editor edits the scenes, there will be storage for them to store the recordings and not have to keep buying rails and the digital camera comes with equipments that can be connected to the computer and uploaded the scenes quicker and be more efficient.
  • 10. Disadvantages and advantages of Digital video- Adam The first advantage of using a digital video is that the distribution will be easier when the person who recorded the video uploads the recording onto another device and save it to have other copies. The second advantage is that the image quality of the recording from the video will be crisp, clean and be able to see the small details on the images. Another advantage of using a digital video is that in the long run the digital video camera will be more affordable as you would have already bought the camera but just need to buy some memory cards to have more storage, rather than buying an analogue camera where you would have to keep on buying the rails. However, there are some cons of using a digital video such as, there may be a virus and this could cause the recordings to delete or block the person from downloading or uploading the recordings. Another disadvantage of using digital video is that when a person has uploaded a recording, it can be leaked on to the internet and then other people will be able to view the video. Also, the recordings may be lost if the computer shuts down or is not saved properly onto the device.
  • 11. On Demand- Adam On-demand allows people to watch programmes or movies what they like, whenever they like or wherever they like. It gives people the freedom to watch the video whenever they can instead of having to wait for a specific time to watch the video they want to as they can record live TV programmes and then watch it later when they have time and have a range of content to choose from. UK broadcasters make their programmes available online such as, BBC Iplayer, ITV player, Demand 5 and Catch Up on Channel Most of these services allow people to watch the programmes that they may have missed for free or just need to sign up and have an account that will allow them to watch the programmes whenever they want.People can watch on-demand on their smart TV, laptops/computer, mobile phone or on game consoles. But any of these devices must be connected to the internet because the service requires an internet connection because it will allow people to stream the programmes or then they will have to download the programme if there are no connections to the internet. There are online service on-demand such as the ones listed above, but there are allows on-demand programmes that come with a ‘set top box’ which people can receive from their internet company. For example, Sky is a wide company that provides people with internet, TV services and on-demand services. If you have Sky, you can buy a ‘bundle’ which will give you a ‘set top box’ that you can connect to your TV and then this will allow people at home to watch any movies or programmes they want and at anytime they want. However, the bundle comes in different sizes so some people may have a small bundle and therefore they may not be able to watch some of the programmes or movies they want because they haven't paid for a different bundle.
  • 12. On demand - Adam On Demand An individual can also access movies on demand depending on their Sky or Virgin package. For example, a Sky customer would need to purchase the Sky Cinema package in order to watch movies on demand. For example, they would be able to watch Deadpool. However, if they do have Sky Cinema this means that they can find any movie by genre, download it and watch it. Again, they do not have to go to the cinema scheduled listings, and watch a movie halfway through. They can download the movie and watch it from the beginning. The Sky Store is also available, where people can purchase a new movie and then watch it from their TV. For instance, Logan. They can also decide whether they would like to buy and keep the movie, and then they are sent the DVD, the movie also remains on their recordings, for the viewer to watch when they want.
  • 13. Disadvantages and advantages of On demand- Adam The advantages of on-demand is that it gives people a variety of content to choose from which they can choose what film or programme they want to watch at any time or wherever they are. People can watch programmes or films on-demand at any time instead of waiting for the time when the film or programme will be shown on television if they do not make the time to watch it. One disadvantage of using on-demand is that it requires the person to make sure that they have the correct subscription box so they can watch the programmes they want because there are different sizes of the subscription boxes and this can have a limit on what the person wants to watch. Another disadvantage is that some Iplayers such as BBC Iplayer deletes some programmes after a certain amount of time. This will not be good for the audience as they may not be able to see the programme that they want to watch but they may not be able to watch it because the programme has been taken down thus not letting people watch the programme. Eastenders is a programme that can be watched on BBC Iplayer but the programme will only last for 30 days as they need to keep uploading new episode and therefore they will not be enough space to keep all the episodes.
  • 14. The Internet The internet is a global network of computers which provide information and communication facilities for anyone to use. The internet is a very popular tool that everyone uses in their everyday lives. People can talk to other people through social media, shop online, play games, do work and watch programmes and films on websites. The internet has a variety of legitimate websites where people can stream programmes or movies that they want to see or can get access to movies or programmes that have not been released yet to the public through illegitimate websites such as, 123movies.com, watchmovies.com and gomovies.com In today's society, more and more people are using the internet because it can allow them to watch videos and communicate with other people as well. Because portable devices requires internet connection, most of the population will have portable devices and would rather spend more time on watching the programme or film on their laptop or phone than watching it on their television. The internet also allows people to distribute recordings online and allow people to get access to the recordings by a person that may be in a different location.
