school community.
It uses multidisciplinary approach and foster
intersectorial collaboration to enhance
sustainable human, economic, community
and nation development.

Earliest efforts came from Europe
1790- free school meals in Germany
1833-France enacted laws on SHP
WW1&2-Biggest stimulus for SHP
Nigeria-1929 first effort
-1952 (Western region) – more robust
-2005 (FGN) - school feeding relaunched

A child spends quality time at school
Exposed to various influences/variables
SHP helps a child to inculcate healthy habits and
remain in good health to benefit maximally from
school education.

SHP is on the Concurrent list of governments:

In Nigeria, 3 main areas have been identified:
-Healthful school environment (HSE)
-School health instruction (SHI)
-School health services(SHS)
A fourth component of school-home-community
relationship is now being considered
In USA, SHP- 8 components model(1987)

All the consciously organised , planned and
executed efforts to ensure safety and healthy
condition of the school environment

water supply, classrooms, waste management,
accident prevention/safety measures,

Education of the school community about health
matters thus helping them to achieve maximum -
physical mental, and social wellbeing.
Components:
personal health, growth/devpt, sex/drug educatn,
HIV/AIDS, safety eductn, commu health, envtal
health, social/emotnal hth.
Methods: Personal, impersonal, combination

15. SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES (SHS)
Preventive and curative services provided for the school
community
Components
-Health appraisal services: through Physical examinations
& investigations during routine inspections OR through
school health records at the clinic
-Treatment of common minor ailments
-Control of communicable dxs
-Special health supports: Child with disability, &
prolonged hospitalisation
-Immunization services

Nutrition- Good nutrition is central to normal
growth & effective learning.
A good school meal should satisfy the following
conditions in addition to being free/subsidised:
Hygienic
Nutritious i.e. contains all necessary nutrients
Supplies at least 2/3rd of child`s daily protein
need
Supplies at least 1/3rd of child`s daily energy
need

Disease control in school through:
Isolation & treatment of infectious diseases
Prompt referal
Immunisation: Ensure compliance with
National immunisation requirements
Encourage uptake of special vaccines e.g 5
doses of Tetanus Toxoid during school years
Vaccination of girls with HPV vaccine to
prevent cervical cancer
